The idea of brushing the arm was interesting. As Adam Hsu says the brushing arm not only prevents injury to the defender as the defender blocks the attacking arm but by brushing or sliding against the attacking limb with multiple points of contact the attacking arm is simultaneously redirected from its attacking trajectory. I saw a practical application of this brushing defensive concept as I was watching a Western style boxing match. I remember watching the late Mexican great boxer, Salvador Sanchez, defending against his opponents right hand punch during the fight. As the opponent executed his rear hand right cross punch Sanchez extended his lead left hand jab toward the chin of his opponent while simultaneously sliding his jabbing arm along the inside of his opponents attacking arm thus effectively redirecting his opponents punching arm and striking his opponent upon the chin with the same motion.

there are many martial arts styles that look weird and silly (and this is coming from someone that loves all traditional martial arts) but this one seems to be different. when he was talking about the brushing i had the idee of weapons in my mind. that is the same thing you would do with swords to prevent the blade from breakin. it does sound very effective.

Here we can clearly see a showing of the chinese roots of karate. These principles are roughly the same as the japanese martial art. Concepts like the spiraling motion of the tsuki and its impact on the target with the energy piercing through it, the importance of the hikite and the flowing energy that results by connecting all body parts in a single harmonious unit, the 50/50 nature of all karate "blocks" (simultaneously attacks and blocks). Good stuff. Oss!

"Brushing" is also useful to seize the opponent's balance. When you sink your elbow using your back muscles and apply a spiral force on your opponent's rigid arm, you will take his balance because he will feel pulled to the ground. It's very similar to the feeling that you get when someone pushes against a door with his strenght and then the door gets opened from someone on the other side: the one pushing loses its balance and goes straight to the ground.
@mainakdeb8322

It has also started to deflect an attack before the defenders optimal( maximum force) position has been reached.. effectively making it a quicker response whose precision can then be adjusted. It also keeps recruiting newer muscle fibres thus generating a graded controlled force .. effectively preventing overshooting and useless expense of energy. It also gives time to the defender to adjust his centre of gravity.. improving balance. And it provides tactile sensations and elicits conditioned reflexes when attacks are blindspotted or faster than the eye can see or brain can react to.. something hard touches could never condition a practiotioner to.
@hollowdusk
@hollowdusk 5 жыл бұрын
Really interesting. Seems to me that long fist is the origin of karate and then some karate styles either lost the brushing or were influenced by the other shaolin hard styles, preferring to harden the arms and legs in order to be able to block hard. Fascinating

Nope! White Crane in its different variations have influenced thoroughly Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu and even Uechi Ryu (which is deeply rooted in Pangai Noon, Dragon, Tiger and Crane styles). On the other hand, Chang Chuan (Long Fist) has a long tradition, considered an external style. Sifu Adam Hsu has a balanced profile as a martial artist on both side, the internal and external styles.

I have to disagree with one thing he said, years ago I studied ngo cho kun, (aka fist of the five ancestors) maybe you can try and do a documentary on that style it will be interesting. I stand corrected you have a done already gonna watch it now 😂 Anyway we done lots of body conditioning, to strengthen the arms legs body etc, so if there was a technique that was more of a smashing with the forearms, it would hurt the opponent more than it did you. Also if you blocked and your arms were more conditioned than your opponents it wouldn't take long before they would start feeling pain in their arms thus making them reluctant to punch again, however I know under fight conditions adrenalin can keep you from feeling pain but in general a conditioned strong body can withstand more blows than one that isn't. As a traditional Chinese martial art, I'm surprised he actually said that they brush rather than knock the arm just so they don't get hurt. It's statements like that, that give the impression that traditional kung fu doesn't work. Also the style I did had longfist forms, and I assure you a lot of techniques had smashing your opponent with the forearms and brushing, it all depended on what was called for at the time. Example if someone came at you with a knife, I'm sure your most likely gonna try and smash the arm that holds the knife rather than a brush technique.

Brush technique is more of a concept, if you smash your enemies hand or forearm, he'll probably react and try harder to attack you. Some kungfu conditioned their forearm to be strong but eventually they also taught the soft part like the brushing concept. I assume you're Indonesian by saying Ngo Cho Kun haha, if you are actually Indonesian. You can find some teachers that can taught you this. Maen Po silat use this kinda brushing concept/soft touch.

That is not the reason why the hand goes back. That is a common misunderstanding which comes from ignorance, when we do not know the reason why we do someting we tend to invent it. If you use the hand in that way you are exposed to be counterattacked. The reason because it is done in that way is because you are training pulling and hitting at the same time, one hand punches, the otherone controls an arm.

When he asked you, can you still fight after blocking hard once, may be twice, you should have said yes. It wouldn't hurt cause of conditioning. Kung Fu practitioner should have his Qigong in his training as well. Harden their Body. To brush/block an opponent you need to time it right and move in, otherwise that fist that came at you is going to go back and the other fist is going to blast you into yesterday. If that really is the way traditional Chang Quan is taught, then they are going to only fight Chang Quan practitioners and nothing else, if they don't want to be shamed. I don't know if he ever heard of taizu Chang Quan, cause that one form blast this Chang Quan away. Sorry but this master somewhere lives in fantasy Land. Dude don't be scared to ask questions? I would. He stops to think sometimes of what else to say, I'd blast him a question. I mean how many masters have you spoken to over the years now, and his training didn't seem a bit too much like Mushu (Modern + Wushu) to you? Qi xing tanglang is more useful/ complete than what I saw here, plus it has Chang Quan forms in it. Long fist is like first martial art that was used on the battlefields before mainstream "KungFu" took over. I am sorry I can't believe they brushed off each other's fists/arms on the battlefields, that would have been a b*tchslap Battle🤣.

Delusional. This elderly master should be working on his breathing and health, not kidding himself that his wushu is related in any way to actual fighting. The problem with 99% of Chinese wushu masters is that they are old, out of shape, physically weak, and worst of all, have never been in a real fight. Sparring with your students who attack in slow motion does not count. If I can SEE a punch coming in slow motion, I can counter like THIS, and then THIS. Sure, sure. In a real fight you don't catch the other guys's striking fist and make clever wrist locks and counters. You get hit in the nose really hard. And, that's when the real fight actually begins. If you can't take that punch, and that first punch puts you on the ground, then you don't belong in the fight. The recent TaiJi master who took a fight with some amateur 50 year old MMA fighter found that out. Theory does not equal reality.

Sifu Adams knuckles are so flat. Our old Sifu Anthony Gohs hands are like that . Like small anvils . He taught a class on bone conditioning where he demonstrated on a tree out front . Very impressive, years of conditioning his hands forearms instep and shins made them solid like steel. He was always as calm and friendly as Sifu Adam but you’d always catch a glint in his eye when it was time for sparring or a proper match.A lesson from Sifu was never excessive but just enough force to help you understand how the technique actually worked and how important strength conditioning and practical practice was. It never got old seeing our older Sifu walk through the class join locking everyone. It wasn’t till I had it demonstrated on myself that I understood how much work needed to go into learning these techniques. These men are a wealth of knowledge.

from fencing verdadera destreza, it seems like brushing temporarily makes them lose control of the direction of their arm. if you block with a beat, they can always come back forcefully. but if you redirect them with a brush a little bit, they can't control their arm.

Kungfu is a good exercise and looks good in movies but not for street fights; a kung fu master would not stand against an MMA fighter...this is the reason why Bruce Lee transformed his style from wing chun kungfu mixing it with other martial arts style.

His English is really good and his explanation is clear and interesting. Thanks very much for interviewing him! “One arm, two fists!” My Shifu, Pan Qing Fu taught me some Long Fist many years ago when I was starting. He always said “hands never empty when going out and hands never empty empty going in.” He also talked about block and attack at the same time. Now that Pan Qing Fu has passed away, it’s really nice to see this kind of similar wisdom from Adam Hsu. Reminds me of my Master!

It's always nice to start with Long Fist alright. Totally agree with that as a Long Fist practicer myself. But if the teacher would let his students pay more attention to their foundation rather than just practice with those movements, it could be much better both for their health and their exercising results.

@Sean Francis Waters Lancaster The guy is a Sifu (teacher/master) of Martial Arts, he's older yes, but he ought to be able to get in the ring and easily handle a few rounds to demonstrate that his techniques work.or have his students get in the ring and prove it... It doesn't have to be a title fight, just a real fight demonstration. If you train BJJ or Judo, guys his age are still killers. Realistically, they won't last as long or have the same stamina, but they will put you down. I've seen it and been there. Instead of Sifu, maybe he should call himself a coach like Burgess Meredith in Rocky. That would be fair... a dancing coach, even better.

From Technical point of view, Kungfu is very primitive comparing with other modern martial arts. Its core ideas are extremely simple (like twisting punch, countering-punching and blocking in one move, etc.), but made very complex and mysterious, so that the masters can make a profit by teaching a short course for many years. Even worse, some concepts are totally wrong and impractical. E.g. the brushing block, to avoid hard contacts. That's completely meaningless in real fight. If you would even get hurt by blocking a punch with your arm, then you are not suitable for any fight.
