When crafting a story, the first thing you have to is establsh the villain as a threat to be reconed with. They did that with Joker in the Dark Knight when he walked into a room full of gang leaders and made chumps out of all of them. A pushover villain doesn't create any fear about the outcome of the story. Besides, there are a lot of reasons Thanos would have won. He had armor protecting his face and body, he was a much more skilled fighter, and he's no weakling either. It was a stortelling device to establish his menace, that's all.

I know a lot of fans were upset the Hulk lost so easily to Thanos. I think they were just trying to show how powerful Thanos was and what the Avengers were up against. Keep in mind he handled Thor like he was a little kid too at the beginning. The one thing I like about Marvel is that the villains are usually more powerful than the heroes, so having Hulk being more powerful than everyone would make the victories too easy in many cases.

In the comic, Thanos when he was on the quest for the Infinity Gauntlet stated that he always avoided to confront the Hulk. He said this because he knew as far as Brute strength the Hulk would keep coming back but each time stronger and harder to put down and eventually would be taken down himself. In 2014 comics when they fought in some abstract world, Thanos defeated a Banner-less Hulk, but when Banner and Hulk got together handed Thanos his butt. The other times when Thanos defeated Hulk was when Thanos had the Infinity Gauntlet. I do not have a problem with Thanos beating Hulk but easy like that? Come on.

Hulk only started to losing after Age of Ultron, and then on. In the first Avengers he was a force to be reckoned with, and felt threatening. After Hulkbuster punched him in the face, I knew his character was significantly nerfed. To be completely honest, what really downgraded his character was only his Thor Ragnarok portrayal.

Odin has done it in the comics. @TheMarvelousWave 's theory holds up in some way. You just have to get him down before his strength begins to outclass your own. His power may be limitless, but it takes some time to build up. Before he became World Breaker Hulk, his opponents foolishly gave him enough time to get angrier and stronger. In the comics, World Breaker Hulk Did Not kill the Avengers. But he did defeat them. And then The Sentry overtaxed The Hulk's healing factor and they both reverted back to their human forms. Of course Bruce Banner then knocked out Robert Reynolds (The Sentry's human form) with a punch, thereby winning the fight. And then Banner collapsed.

As a martial arts instructor its probably one of the most realistically choreographed fight scenes in the marvel universe. As a character the Hulk could be stronger than Thanos, but a superior fighter can beat a stronger opponent. There is also a moment when the fight is lost psychologically, and that moment came when Thanos forced his way off the bulkhead and tossed a finger jab to the Hulks throat, 3:21, the Hulk grabs his throat and backs away, hurt and confused his momentum his confidence shattered. Brings back fond memories, I was bouncing at a college dance when this 6'4" a-hole starts pulling some crap pushing people around, when I approached he went to grab me, I grabbed his wrist, pulled him in while finger jabbing his throat, after that it was easy to get him in a hammerlock and toss him out the door into a snow bank. Ah the good old days. 😁

I believe that the Hulk lost because of his own fear. During the process of these Avengers movies you have seen the Hulk slowly decline in his rage and become a little more "tame" so to speak. I think that was by design. Bruce Banner seems to have more control now with the Hulk. When you saw the Hulk in the past truly be desperate is when his rage became enough to overcome. I think this "Hulk won't come out..." is a lead up to a new transformation we will see in the next Avenger movie. I believe he will get over that fear and we will see a rematch. I also think that because Tony Stark works side by side with Bruce Banner so well is the reason why Tony Stark is such a threat to Thanos because he has the ability to help the Hulk just as he was able to build Veronica to protect from the Hulk. I don't think we have seen the last of the Hulk & Iron Man duo just yet:)

Growing up with comics in the 90s, I've always thought of a non-infinity stone powered Thanos as still an immensely powerful opponent, physically a match for the likes of Thor, Hulk, etc. Before you factor in his ability to use energy blasts, technology, fighting ability, etc. It wasnt hard for me to accept him completely taking Hulk apart like that because even in his own he's one of the most dangerous cosmic level bad guys there is. Many people thought the Power Stone was a crutch that Thanos used to help bolster his strength. But when the Russos confirmed it was him by himself, they never questioned it. Me, I knew flat out, Hulk and Thanos were equals, and while Hulk caught Thanos by surprise, his mistake was stopping his assault by choking him. If he had continued to pummel, he may have done more damage. BUT, the end result would have been the same. Eventually Thanos would pick up on him being nothing but a brute and start to take advantage.

You don't need an in depth analysis to see that Thanos is clearly a better fighter than the Hulk. Whether Thanos is physically stronger can be debated for years but he doesn't have to be. He just has to be able to land enough big punches in the right places to take him down. Looking at the battle it appears that was what he was doing. His punches seemed to be perfectly aimed to cause maximum damage in a short period of time. Hulks healing factor couldn't keep up with so much damage being piled on all at once.

I agree, it clearly shows during the fight that Thanos' moves are swift and calculated, compared to Hulk's lumbering power swings. I also believe that the events of Ragnarok are still playing on the mind of Bruce, during that film he openly admitted that he was afraid to become Hulk again, in case he didn't turn back. Though he did turn Hulk later on, we saw him actually bleed during the fight and Thor was able to easily tell Hulk not to fight Surtur. So I believe that even though he had turned Hulk, there was a part of Bruce holding back, afraid to let go too much and as such, this limited Hulk's strength. Case in point, when he's power slammed into the ground, we've seen Hulk get up from those just looking more pissed off, instead he's momentary stunned, like there is an inner turmoil, Hulk expecting more rage to flood his system and instead he feels if anything weaker, as Bruce's rage inside waivers, surprised at getting beaten so easily and unwilling on subconsciously level to feed Hulk anymore for that fear or losing himself. It's why I was so gutted over Endgame, I predicated that the Bruce and Hulk would need to come to some understanding, realising that separately they weren't stronger enough but together they could beat him, Hulk's strength combined with Bruce's intellect to not just going in with the power swings all the time but study their opponent. And that sort of happened but off screen! And then it seem to result if anything in a weaker Hulk that was barely used during the film and definitely missing his retribution fight against Thanos!

While you did bring up the interesting point of the Hulk not having time to get angrier, I still feel like this video was unnecessary. The simple explanation is that Thanos, even without the Power Stone, is really fricking tough. He is capable of matching many of the strength feats that the Hulk at low anger is capable of, and it should go without saying that he's much smarter. Hulk is a brute through and through, so his fighting style boils down to little more than whaling hard punches and throwing things, which makes him rather predictable if you take the time to notice it. Thanos on the other hand is somewhat of a martial artist who thinks of his approach and knows how to balance offense and defense to form a coherent strategy. He is a military leader after all, and you can see this come through in the fight; targeting weak points and countering and parrying attacks before landing finishing blows that the Hulk tends to throw prematurely. Everybody is so baffled by the Hulk losing, when to me it's really no surprise.

That’s not true. The power stone glows when it gives the user power, like it did with Ronan. Literally the entire point of the infinity gauntlet is to shut off the stones unless Thanos clenches his fist

If you also notice, once Hulk has him on the wall, the Hulk isn't angry anymore. If the target isn't angering Hulk, and if hulk isn't angry, The Hulk gets his strength from his rage.

No. No. No. The ONLY reason Thanos was able to defeat *The Incredible Hulk* was that he had the *Infinity Gauntlet with the Power Stone* ! That's it. Remember, Benjamin J. "The Thing" Grimm has stood toe-to-toe with Thanos and we all know that Hulk is vastly more powerful than The Thing. I agree with the "theory" that Hulk's emotional fluctuation aided in Thanos' win. Of course, as @ChristopherManno stated a few days ago, the Writers can create any scenario where a character defeats another character for some reason or another. I remember waaaay back in the day hearing my friends ridicule the *Batman vs. Hulk* DC/Marvel crossover moment when The Batman kicked The Hulk in the stomach, causing him to exhale and then breathe in Batman's nerve gas. Okay, so that was ridiculous (despite my attempts at explaining how/why it was possible for Batman to do so without breaking both legs), but, nevertheless, it happened. Again, Thanos, without the Infinity Gauntlet with the Power Stone, would definitely be defeated by "The Strongest One There Is". Aside from *Galactus* (my personal vote for *most powerful* character in the MCU), The Hulk is the strongest. *'Nuff Said!*

hi, i am no expert at all concerning marvel, only a mainstream fan. however i find your comment very good. i dont have enough knowledge at all to say youre right or wrong, but leavin that aside i would highly agree to all you say. i will try to prove that you are right and that the infinity stone was used in The Hulk's and Thanos' confrontation by devices in the movie. arguments are listed from weak to strong. Hulk's fear as a leitmotif: The upcoming "Endgame" movie will probably prove your point. in "infinity war" another fight between Hulk and Thanos is clearly forshaddowed by the fear the Hulk carries since the fight with Thanos. the fear is clearly a plot device that has not come to a conclusion yet. that alone and by itself would chime in with what You say since the whole Hulk-suddenly-has-anxiety-plot-device PLUS it's eventual solving kinda has that "smell" to me that something was not right in their confrontation/fight/duel --> cheating --> infinity stone (i theorize that the hulk does not fear Thanos, but he infinite power of the power stone, more to that later). if we just use logic alone, it would make absolutely no sense for Thanos to be phyically stronger than The Incredible Hulk anyways cause THEN there WOULD be no solution to that specific plot, period. impossible. stylistic devices: everytime Thanos gets a new infinite stone in his gauntlet we see him use that stone's concrete power. When we see Thanos enter the stage for the first time in the movie the Power Stone is already in his gauntlet. Therefore the stone's power should also be already there. only cinematically and stylistically seen. now i know that he uses both stones (power and space) the moment he and gang leaves the first scene. looks to me like a stylistic device; the mysterious, new villain Thanos gets introduced and before we even know of the infinity stone(s) he is shown as "stronger than the strongest one there is (hulk)" --> a device later on explained by the wizard when explaining the infinity stones. thats the moment the viewer should have their "ahhh" moment. "Infinite power did beat hulk". a rather complicated stylistic device for a movie, but personally i am thankful, haha! now all of that was only dry, school-like analysis and still gives you completely right. now to the stronger arguments. characterization and character development. Thanos makes the Hulk look flabbergasted and surprised by the hits. the fact that the Hulk appeared to be so shocked (instantly) and anxious (on the long run) is soooo badly indicating that the infiniy stone was used. again, i have poor little knowledge about the comics, but from the movies alone the Hulk definitely, by fact, has taken stronger blows than the ones of a titan, and has definitely seen stronger things. never did he get anxiety (as far as i know). only the infinite power of the stone could shock him. and in my opinion it is the infinite power of the stone that he fears, not Thanos. Hulk doesnt come out anymore. like WTF? As if he wouldn't come out anymore because of a friggin titan. thinking about it. what seems like Hulk's natural "enemy"? infinite power! not a titan. Hulk jumped on Ragnarok (big version) like it was nothing and wanted to continue smashing. Thor even told him to stop, "not this time", which highly indicates The Hulks unbelievable - sorry - INCREDIBLE power level. as if in case Hulk had continued smashing, Ragnarok may not have destroyed Asgard. maybe. doesnt matter, what matters is that the Incredible Hulk was FAAAR from beeing anxious, rather he was pumped, thrilled to fight! speaking of Thor, he was defeated by the infinity stone as well, not by a friggin titan. i guess. Theres one thing even more HIGHLY INDICATING that a titan could never beat The Hulk. Loki's words! "[...] We have one thing You dont have. We have a Hulk" Loki (intelligent, a god) is likely able to gauge power. if they dont have hulk then they dont have him. loki is not the kinda character at all who would show off with things not powerful enough to justify the showing off. last bit of proof: characterization for Thanos. Thanos is willing to do anything it takes to archieve his goals (proven by murdering his daughter), he even says it himself i think. Why wouldnt he use the power of the stone. summing up, let me put it this way: if it will be revealed that the incredible hulk fears Thanos and not the literally infinite power of the Power stone... I am gonna eat my shoes. those are the things that let me highly agee to You. the Infinity Stone IS the reason Thanos won the duel. i agree. overall i just like your point of view. a titan beating the incredible hulk in any physical way, shape or form? ridiculous, laughable. lol! haha. with Galactus i would also agree, but that is too far in my childhood past, i have to admit. i agree by the galactus hype alone that i remember. lol

thanos destroys the hulk anyday like its tuesday without any power stone in the comics. look up INFINITY FINALE, THANOS VS WORTHY SILVER SURFER VS MAESTRO HULK, WORLD BREAKER HULK VS THANOS on youtube. most powerful hulk fought zeus and lost. thanos fought odin who is as strong as zeus to a standstill, its all in the links above. thanos is a force of nature

HOWEVER i also read many good comments stating that the cinematic universe does not equal the comics at all anyways, which is why i was mainly focusing on the movie and it's devices. now the way You describe Thanos, i can accept that Hulk may also fear him and not only the stone. lmao it was fun to practice my english tho. to be completely honest that all seems to me as if marvels powerscaling is complex enough to put it either way if you are the director. In my opinion hulk needs momentum in order to maximize his power and strength. He was easily defeated because he’s in a confined space plus his rage was not extended and Thanos might have know about it easily defeating big green.
