I have a one month old preemie that was in NICU for 14 days. I was never even advised about the option of having donor breastmilk. I would’ve chosen that option but instead they put him on ready to feed Similac which I am not crazy about. Thank you for making this video because now I need to find a donor on my own.

You're welcome! It's really sad that the NICUs don't have this readily available. Make sure to contact a milk bank because they have the proper screening methods in place. Good luck!

I have always wondered if it’s bad to use donor milk because the mother’s body specifically produces the milk for a baby with her genetics. Now this would still be an issue with any animal milk but I am wondering if it’s still optimal or could cause problems. Could the type of milk depend on ethnicity, muscle mass, height, medical history, genetic diseases, etc?

Thanks for asking. Breast milk is genetically designed for a woman's baby however it can be safely given to other babies. The reason why donor milk is so safe for other babies is because its species specific milk. Our bodies were designed to digest and use human milk. When we drink animal milk, we are trying to absorb and process a different species' milk. This makes it harder on our bodies which is why babies can have adverse effects like NEC. I am sure the future will show that other factors can cause a baby to utilize one milk better than another but ultimately human milk for human babies is ideal.
