No, they weren´t friends before, they got to know each other after the first golden globes where Johnny Depp thought Gervais was so hysterical roasting him and all the other celebrities so he called him up afterwards and wanted to be in his next project :) Funny thing is all the "know-it-all's" around the world at that time were saying Depp clearly didn´t like the joke and were furious at Gervais over it They all went quiet when Depp was in Gervais next project "Life's too short", where(in the show) Depp got a chance to get inside Gervais office, so he comes up with an evil plan: he is gonna roast Gervais to get back at him in a really childish manner and then because Gervais isn´t offended by his roast he is acting totally offended, nearly crying and in he end runs out of there :D the part at 4:30 in this video is actually the year after(or if it is 2 years after) and Gervais brings up "The Tourist" again, making fun of the fact that Johnny Depp still hasn´t seen it, but by the time that is shown, they have been friends for like 1-2 years or so :)

Steve CARRELL is a great guy and he loves Ricky Gervais as Ricky loves him. And the refusing to give him the Oscar thing is a long running bit between the two of them that they created together. Ricky Gervais actually created the show, “The Office” in England. It was a success so they wanted an American version. Ricky Gervais took to task of creating the American version of “The Office”, and hired Steve Carell. Steve was the star and after a few seasons, got a big ego. He made the bad decision of leaving the office to focus on film projects, which honestly didn’t pan out very well. There is bad blood between Ricky and Steve over this. Steve actually was ungrateful for his big break by Ricky. Ricky make a crack in here and ruining their “cash cow”., meaning they both were making lots of money from The Office. Steve ruined that when he left and the show limped on for like a season maybe 2 before cancellation

@@azul2yrsago415 He basically said Tom Cruise is gay, which was actually a huge rumor for years before he made the joke, but around the time he actually made the joke, the US's stance on homosexuality had radically shifted and outing gay people without their permission was a big no-no. He added "probably" to make it clear it was a reference to popular (read: trashy) gossip and not like he was actually trying to out him, but yeah it's clear here that the joke still didn't go over well with the audience. (that's my understanding.)
