Spanish decline of monetary dominance in the 17th century? Umm the Chinese were still using Spanish coins up until the mid 19th century when they were trading with the British, in fact they preferred it over the British coinage!

Jews were heavily involved in the African slave trade as well. Many of the so called Spanish and Portuguese slave traders were Jewish, such as Aaron Lopez.

Spanish conquest in the Americas made many Spanish people very arrogant, so that they became very unpopular even in Catholic Europe. Hence, after the failure of the Armada, little barefooted boys in Paris would for some time after walk behind the Spanish Ambassador, shouting "Victoria !" Philip II financed the Catholic Party in the French wars of religion, partly to help the Church, but mainly to keep France in an impotent state of civil war. Hence when Richelieu brought France in on the Protestant side during the Thirty Years War (covertly in 1630, openly from 1634), many French Catholics supported him. In 1634, the devoutly Catholic Emperor of Austria (Ferdinand II), seeing that the War was now political, not religious, wished to make Peace. He was prevented from doing so, by his Jesuit Confessor, Fr Lamormaini, threatening him with hell-fire if he did. Another 14 years of war (even more terrible than the previous 16) followed, from which European Christianity has never recovered.

Spain betrayed the Catholic Faith by equating the interests of Spain with those of the Catholic Church. The greater Spain's power and glory, the greater God's would be, they believed. But God is a jealous god - we must worship Him, and Him alone - not our country.

If Spain had thought like that they would have done like protestants who killed every indian they ran into. Spanish didn't think they were more important than any other etnicity, that's why they tought the gospel to the indigenous people and mixed with them, because they weren't racist. On the other hand the english protestants thought they were the chosen ones by God and that they had the right to do whatever it took to prevail, and they saw America like the promised land, they thought It belonged to them, and you already know the story, all natives were wiped out everywhere they went (north america, Australia), and where they couldn't killed all the natives, they carried out apartheid (south africa). So please spare your bull....

Spanish Catholic Faith heroic ? Yes - but where was the accompanying Caritas, without which Faith is worthless ? Often largely or wholly absent. Hence the pitiful and impoverished (and largely ungovernable) condition of Hispanic America both before the Spanish left, and since.
@tonybuck12253 жыл бұрын
It will not do to whitewash Spanish Catholicism. It has often been extraordinarily fanatical and cruel, as well as extraordinarily fervent and heroic. Witness the immense heroism and cruelty of General Franco and his Nationalist troops.
@AJ106343 жыл бұрын
You have no idea what you are talking about when talk about Franco. He prevented comunist russia from killing all catholics. Maybe thats something that strikes you as cruel because protestants persecuted and killed thousands and thousands of catholics like in England. Maybe you would've wanted comunism to killed all catholics in Spain too, I'm sorry if Franco let you down. And to end this text , let me make this clear to you, All English and other prostestansm doesnt hold a candle to Spanish Catholicism. You only have to see they mixed with the natives they found and not killed them like the protestants. United states and Australia are all white people and zero natives while the hispanic american countries are full of indegenous people and mestizos. Only for that reason Spanish Catholicism is way ahead better than Protestansm.

To dismiss the English (and later British) Empire as "piracy" is libellous absurdity. What about the (often heroic) English, Welsh and Scottish settlers in North America ? What about Britain's vast global trading links ? What about the great success of the English-speaking USA over more than two centuries ? All of which goes to show: better sincere Protestants, than insincere Catholics.

Britain's vast global trading links? Are you talking about becoming rich by drugging the most populated country (china) with opium? Or are you talking about abusing and starving the India people on porpouse and let millions of them die? Or the same thing with the irish? Is destroying every country in order to weaken them and take advantage and steal all their natural resources and let them in total poverty something to be proud of? Spain didn't make all hispanic-american countries poor but the other way around. When Spain was in charge, the most prosperous and rich cities in the world with the highest standard of living were what's today Peru and México. They had built many universities, hospitals, churches, etc... 150 years before the english built their first university. All hispanic countries are poor right now because they were separated in a balcanic way to weaken them by the libertadors who were paid by England to do so. English people hace always been pirates with no morals, they always grew by sinking others not by creating. And Spain promoted interracial marriage since the first years by the Queen Isabel la Catholic in the 1500, and it took almost 500 hundred years for the protestant united states to unforbid It, exactly It wasn't allowed til 1967. While the protestants kings promoted the saying : "the best Indian is the dead Indian". So , what is It to be so proud of?

The Spanish Empire began in 1492, with the completion of the Reconquista, the uniting of the crowns of Castile and Aragon and with Columbus's voyage. But it was doomed from the very outset by another event of that year, the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain. This (along with the influx of gold and silver from the New World) crippled the Spanish economy, so that the financial strength of the Spanish Empire was solely, and unhealthily, based on the Treasure Ships. Worse, it dispersed throughout the Turkish Empire, and also Europe, an intelligent and patient People burning with anger at the injustice done to them and scared of further persecution if Spanish power in Europe and the Mediterranean was extended. The leading Jews' financial acumen and international knowledge were a vast asset to the Protestant Cause, notably in Holland and England. Olivares, chief minister of Philip IV of Spain during the Thirty Years War, always attributed Spain's defeat in that war - not to Richelieu and the French - but to the Jews. Richelieu financed Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden; but who financed Richelieu (with the vast amount of gold that the King of Sweden required before he was prepared to enter the war) is far from clear !
