Hi Thad, I wanted to check something with you. I am in Bay Area, California and building my house. Overall, I aim to build a tight one. I am considering a standing seam metal roof from Sheffield Metals (of course). Generally, most of the contractors who work with Sheffield Metals panels have suggested an underlayment like SharkSkin Ultra SA attached to the roof deck with the roof panels fastened to it. My house receives a lot of direct sunlight all around the day and the attic runs really hot. So, I want to add a thermal break. Here is what I am considering the following metal roof assembly. - Sharkskin Ultra SA directly attached to the plywood decking. - Perforated Roofing Foil directly on top of sharkskin ultra sa as a radiant barrier. - CedAir roof mat on top of roofing foil to provide 0.4” of air gap for thermal break. - Standing seam metal roof panels on top of roof mat with fasteners going directly into the decking. What do you think about this assembly? We don’t get any snow. We get some rain but no crazy storms. There is some dew build up during winters as I can see the water dripping from gutters. There are some other manufacturers for the roof mat like Sharkskin’s dimple mat and one by Keene. But I think they all solve the problem effectively. I could go with the SharkSkin Radiant underlayment but I want something Self Adhering. Do you think that adding a thermal break is worth it in our climate zone, or am I over thinking? Btw, here is my channel with the build videos if you want to see the actual house. kzbin.info/door/6RAiwBLFBjhVbUAkI6ZSjA

Thanks for dropping a comment! It looks like you previously had asphalt shingles, and upgrading to a metal roof should help reduce some of that heat transfer to your attic space already. I would suggest sending Sheffield Metals a message and ask to speak to someone in their Technical department: bit.ly/contact-sheffield They'll be able to talk through your assembly with you. Let me know if you need anything else, and good luck with your project! -Thad

IF your roofling co is cutting panels on site with one of those ntm forming machines off metal coils, doesn't that make everything easier and minimize waste?

I had a roofer come give me an estimate, we got to chatting, and while Im all for differing political opinion... he ended up having some views along the lines of residential schools in Canada never happened, and Putin is the "fall guy" for Ukrainians killing their own. (He also lacked basic facts, denying Canada had been involved in some conflicts we clearly had sent troops to.) I just... can't. I'm all for differing opinions but not alternative realities. He was recommended to me by another company- should I share this with the company who recommended him? He also seems to have the lock on this particular system for our area. Our contractor who did our siding can seem to get his hands on this particular metal roofing style I would really like. Do I email the company directly to tell them why I want their product but not their distributor? Im mildly afraid of retribution as I cant imagine he had this conversation with many clients. Im a former bartender and I seem to get people to open up, maybe too much. :/

It's unprofessional for contractors of any kind to be sharing their political views with customers.

Why would you care about what a roofer thinks about international politics?
