Can you imagine a 10 y/o boy shopping at KMart with his dad and they go by the music department and there is a huge display for the new KISS Alive! album. The boy has no idea who KISS is, what KISS is or how KISS is, he just knows he has to have this album and listen to it ASAP. He begs his dad to buy it for him and somehow after some back and forth, his dad agrees and puts the album in the shopping cart. All the boy is thinking about is getting home and playing the album on his dad's awesome stereo system in their finished basement. When they get home, the dad asks his older teenage daughter to setup the record for her brother. So they go downstairs, then the boy takes the plastic off to find that the album opens up and there are 2 records in there with letters from each member of KISS in the gatefold. The boy takes out the first record and hands it to his sister while staring intently at the album. She puts it on side A and drops the needle...and the boy's mind is blown away and he's hooked. That boy was me and that's a true story. This was 1975 and KISS looked and rock musicians in the future and as a young kid, you could not resist KISS.

A lot of that in those days- Tween kids of the boomers, trying to find their own thing and there's Kiss all over late night. All 6 of us (sibs + 3 friends) stayed up past midnight the year before- their US TV debut. Had no prior knowledge, wondered if they were for real, or gimmick. Not only was the music GREAT (as well as all 3 vocals) the whole look and heat of it practically radiated through the TV. Instant heroes!

Why are people picking on this with Kiss? It's 2023, all current bands are in their geriatric phase because there are no good new bands... or at least not comparable to the past. Looking back now, (born in 1968), and IMO KISS was a unique band that whether they were trying to or not, catered to boys like me that were born between 1960 and 1970. If you were a strong fan of R&R they were a stepping stone, but that said, they did put on one hell of a show, and they "were" a hard working band, as stated by Getty Lee, who with RUSH toured together for a good part of the early to mid 70s. I couldn't tell you what albums they did after the solo ones and Dynasty 79/80, but I did finally get to see them in the year 2000 and was pleasantly surprised at how tight they still were and the kick ass high energy show they could still put on. They were also probably the best marketers of their merchandise of "any" band of their era, so hats off to those 4 guys. My GF and I watched Ace spill out of a Sunset Bl hotel in 1998, before Gene got out of a limo and helped him into it. Was 11am and they were getting some award that night. (True Story) and we didn't even know who that long haired guy was until Gene got out of the car to help him.

No kids could control what they were seeing and hearing for the first time back then. It just captured you and drew you in, because of the shock factor. I didn't get into Schenker and UFO until about a year later with the album, Force It. I love that LP! UFO was just starting to gain a foothold in the U.S., where Kiss took America by storm with the Alive LP.

@4tuneagent although I was only 13 or 14 at the time , I didn't find it shocking. I think I found it to be preposterous or embarrassing. But I do agree/understand what you're saying. In my defense, I think it was embarrassing cuz I had already heard alot of Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc etc and had started playing guitar when I was 9. Also , an older neighbor friend had me playing rhythm on a few UFO tunes so he could play the accompanying lead breaks

One of the all time greatest songs in heavy rock. Better than most so called rock songs from the biggest bands. Brilliant musicians and singing, they had it all and that’s not even taking into account their look , stage persona and stage show. I mean no deep purple rainbow, zeppelin song sounds like this. Totally awesome.

That's the thing with the 70s mainstream rock: no band sounded the same. Kiss harsher critics often forget that they are from the same generation as Motorhead, Rush, Aerosmith... they all sound different. The generation that influenced a lot of future bands...

This was and is the greatest single performance of Deuce in this band’s history ( IMHO!). Everything about it is perfect! The tempo, the choreography, the vocals, the (simple) pyro, the attitude, the outfits……EVERYTHING WORKS! I’m loving the improved clarity and resolution on this clip. When I was in my teens (66 now) I recorded this off of my tv with a Super 8mm movie camera, had it developed, waited what seemed like a month to get it back, and took it into work with my projector. Even with no audio, minds were blown. Glad I got in on the ground floor.

Always menacing. Real emotional content. It's not just music, it's rock and roll theatre. Kiss is in your face and you can't take your eyes off them. In the 70's they shocked the world. My mother bought tickets when I was a kid, and my grandfather talked her out of it. Still to this day, she says she wishes she would have taken me. I eventually saw them later in life. I've been playing guitar and singing for over 25+ years now. Music has been a big part of my life for a long time. Im so glad youtube is here. We can see our heroes jamming in their prime.

I was a 10 year old kid who stole his big sisters KISS Alive album and listened to it over and over again in 1975. I recall the kids lucky enough to be allowed to stay up and watch the KISS performance on The Midnight Special telling the rest of us about it. I was a fan right up until the TV special they did not too long after this performance. It was so bad that I lost interest. This performance shows what they were capable of as a band. Ace and Peter meant so much to the chemistry. Ace is a great musician when he is right.
