WWII USN Deck Blue (20B) was a very dark deep blue, it was meant to look as deep blue as the ocean from above. So, there should be a stark contrast to all of the other colors aboard. Missouri was a Flagship, and typically had an Admiral embarked, so she had a lot of people paying attention to her maintenance.

Thank you for the tip on the wood deck! I used Pontos wood decking on the 1/350 New Jersey and did exactly what you did. 2 years strong and no peeling or bubbling so far! It absolutely would have if I hadn't done it this way

I have found that the easiest way to atach the anchors is to fix them to the anchor chain and insert the chain into the horse pipe and then pull the anchor up into position. It naturally takes on the correct positioning. You then fix the other end of the chain to the windlass.

I have a 1/350 version of the same model with the Pontos tan wooden deck & was wondering how to make it deck blue without ruining it. Was worried that acrylic/water-based paint would warp or damage the wood - but not anymore as you proved that it can be done! Thanks for saving me a lot of unnecessary time experimenting with oil/lacquer based paints! I hope to learn more from your progress.

The difference in anchor positions is due to the activity of the ship at the time. Upon launch the anchors are more or less loose due to the fact they will likely be deployed shortly after the launch. In the other picture they are hauled fast to be ready for underway stowage where they must be held fast with no possibility of movement. The deck fittings with the smaller chains and shackles are called stoppers. After the capstan ships the anchor, the stoppers are attached and tensioned to secure the weight of the anchor.

Ben, deck lools great. The anchor looks housed correctly. The anchor pockets, bolsters, are steel castings, forged and set the anchor in proper position when hauled up tight. The small chains are called hold-backs or chain stoppers. They keep the chain from movement in a heavy seaway. The chain size looks a bit small to scale but I'm sure modeled correctly.
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
richard severs thanks for the info! I struggled to get chain that was “too scale” and looked right. I almost used one size larger, but it looked almost the same size as the main anchor chain. So this was the best compromise I could come up with.

Time 13:34. Those small chains are part of the "Chain Stop" prevents the chain from feeding when you don't want it to, the hooks are "Pelican Hooks".
@grobertaguilar60234 жыл бұрын
The chain is held in place by pelican hooks (the little anchors you referred to) They support the weight of the anchor when the anchor is in the hawse pipe.

Looking great! All the chain work is really paying off, especially next to the stained deck. Looks really nice and will get even better as you add all the deck details. Might I make a suggestion to blend in better the small gap under the bow aa mounts? It was quite visible in the head on shot. Some perfect plastic putty and a quicker spray should take care of it and blend it nicely into the bow. Looking forward to the next update!

Reference to the poisition of the anchores during the launch of Missouri. Its a big ship and big ships when launched have a nasty habit of charging off in the wrong direction when they first enter the water thus the anchores are ready to be dropped the very first moment the yard boss thinks something is wrong. At sea proper, the anchores are secured hard agaist the bow as you have it at the end of the video.

Agreed, anchors don't fit these ships at all without some mods being done. Bismarck, Iowa, and Missouri all had the same issues..... for me. Bought the Pontos kit with the Blue Deck, and so far, not happy with it at all. For some reason; it attracts lint like crazy and any other particles the are to land on it.....

The stock of the anchor should be inside the hawse pipe. The plastic probably doesn’t have a lot of flexibility. BZ so far.
@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
You’re correct and if you listen closely to my comments I did have a lot of trouble removing the plastic inside of the kit to get the anchors to stow halfway correct. What I could have done was simply cut off that part of the anchor, since you don’t see it anyway. But then I would not have been able to secure the chain to the anchor. As it sits, the chain comes out of the tackle box, goes around the capstan and connects to the anchor. I preferred that set up to cutting everything up. And things are big enough on this kit that you can look down the hawse pipe and see the top of the anchors....so 🤷🏻♂️ I’m working with what I’ve got.

I have this kit and am starting to work on it. Your videos have helped me a lot. I actually work on the USS Missouri but it is so different from 1945 time period. I know you made up your own "Weather deck Blue" for the wood deck. Can you tell me what color you used on all the decks that are steal and top of the turrets? Is that the same mixture you made for your stain?
@TheMidwestModelShop3 жыл бұрын
The color is “Weather Deck Blue”. I ran out of that half way through the build and had to start mixing my own. You can still find it in Model Master Acrylics, I think. But it may be in a semi gloss finish. Which means you’ll have to clear coat it flat.

If you stained it the way I did with the water based paint it would warp really bad. Once it’s installed and glued down, it’s not going anywhere.

Erich Heyde so that is a very good question. I am not sure at all what is correct. I have a book showing dozens of pictures of they area and they all look slightly different to me. It’s possible that area was modified several times. The kit clearly has “its’ “ version..... it works for me so I’m going to leave it. But you’re definitely correct... something isn’t right.
