As a child, I built numerous plastic airplane, armament and boat models. That was my passion. My model building went dormant as an adult until I was in my late 30's when I got into building building wooden ship models. That lasted for several years until I got my first Macintosh computer in 1975. Since then my model building passion again went dormant. Then last week I saw your entire series on the building of the Trumpeter USS Missouri, and I was hooked!! I have just ordered the kit along with the Pontos upgrade kit and a whole raft of modellers tools. Thank you for this excellent series, for so freely sharing your expertise and, of course, for jump starting my dormant passions for model building.

Bulwark :-) aka "water brake"...Amazing work...Good job on the scratch-built "pelican hooks" on the anchor chains, and adding the anchor stays ( small chains ). I noticed that they don't have a photo-etch set for the 400mm ready service ammo racks in side the gun tubs that held 4-round clips.

Picked up this kit a week ago and have been searching the net for forums with the build and now following yours! Love the effort you are putting into this and sharing ideas and the issues you find along the way that will help others! Me! Hope you don't mind if I try and steal a bit of that oil canning detail you did to the Hull.... Looks bloody great man... From nz

Nice! Tomorrow, I'm gonna get going on a new kit I treated myself to for my birthday. Nothing complicated, an airliner, to ease my way back into building. Thank you for putting this up, always nice to see a good build.

Looking good Ben...great work....and I agree with you,the kit provided water break is the better choice,and adding the lip to increase the height slightly made a big difference,looks good. Keep up the great work and I can't wait until the next video...if you ever decide to do a large scale Flower Class Corvette,I could send you some refrence photos of the HMCS Sackville of the last time she was in drydock.

Hi Ben, Again great work! The correct term is breakwater.It breaks the water coming over the bow in a seaway and protects vents, etc from a heavy wave. I'll make a sailor out of you yet Shipmate!

The model is so big. The opening shot; we can see like 3 feet of the hull, but the bow detail Ben is talking about is off-camera!
@SpudEater5 жыл бұрын
SueBobChicVid It really is a massive model, I typically purchase quality ones already built when I go “antiquing” but I do have several kits from the 50s but I just keep them in their box. I may crack into them at some point but I just like looking at them right above my computer in the office for now, they make a good conversation piece

Oh well everything looks easy when its all sitting there "finished"! LOL. I ate up a lot of hours on just this little section trying to figure out what I was doing. I wasted at least 20 minutes looking for "J" on the Pontos instructions. Turns out "J" is in the KIT INSTRUCTIONS!!!! And two pages from where I was at! I have to stop every few hours and put away all the parts and instructions sheets so I can stay organized. Otherwise it looks like some crazy table full of papers all over the place!

Quite a short video this time but it's starting to take shape nicely. It does seem a bit of a shame to hide all that brass under paint - polished brass would look a bit odd on a warship, I suppose. Would there be any brass fittings on the real ship, maybe just the binnacle?
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
I think there is a lot of brass of ships, but most of it gets painted. Otherwise you’ll be constantly polishing it.

Those are controls for the anchor. The hand wheels control a brake that controls the speed the anchor falls. The torpedo looking things are mine warfare para vanes

After just watching a U Tube film of the USS Missouri during the Gulf war In 1991 I think your anchor chains look a little to small and could do being a thicker gauge. The model looking really good and I look forward to see the finish article
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
Barry Smith I agree completely. Those are the chains that came with the kit and I looked into getting different ones that are the right gauge. But they proved to be very difficult to find. And what I did find, appeared too thick. So I gave up .

Hey there man, I always wanted to build models and I am planning to start it soon. I am now in the phase of gathering some informations about the tools needed and how to start, many told me I should not move directly into building something big but I am definetly going to ignore that and going to buy this beauty. Is one of my favourite BBs and definetly will do it. Any tips? A forum, a website, a link on what I need to get first before starting building? Thank you!

Lookinh great so far! Im gonna ask one thing. Could you do an aircraft carrier after missouri?
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
_-LinusE 06-_ I thought about it for this build “slot”. I did do a series on the USS Independence in 1/350 scale you can check out. Maybe I’ll do a 1/200 Aircraft carrier next. Supposedly Trumpeter is going to release the Enterprise, soon.

Great progress Ben. Question, was the water break, gun tubs and other parts dry fitted removed and airbrushed or were they installed and brushed.
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
The water break was installed and then brushed. The tubs were all masked and airbrushed then installed. I have a drill bit that I ran through the holes first to ensure they will fit. I brush painted all of tubs on the AZ, but this time I happened to airbrush a couple of the tubs and realized I'm now committed to that for this build.

My best advice is to get a very high quality kit that goes together easily. So any Tamiya model kits (especially newer ones) are excellent choices in 1/350 scale. This is in 1/200 scale and goes together very well. Its a nice build straight out of the box. What's making it take so long and challenging is the Pontos photoetch set I've added. I also like Eduard or Tamiya for 1/48 scale aircraft. Hope those ideas help!
@g2macs5 жыл бұрын
It's an excellent build, but one thing keeps jarring at me, is it possible that the bollards are a bit large?
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
Good questions. It is possible... but they are the same size as on the AZ. Also, I keep loosing perspective because I haven't placed any figures on the deck to help give everything scale. I think they are pretty darn close, even if they are off.

Out of curiosity, the parts you are adding to the deck after the deck was painted, do you hand paint those? Or spray them before gluing them down to the deck? eg, Paravane, Water break, etc
@TheMidwestModelShop2 жыл бұрын
I do both. Mostly air brush them, and glue them into position after painting. Some of the parts I install, mask around and then airbrush while they are in place. I just depends on what’s simplest to do.

@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
Peter Harrison those are called paravanes. They put them in the water with a cable and they swing out wide of the ship. The idea is they will catch and trip underwater mines.
