This has probably already been pointed out, but the "dents" on the side of the hull are known in the Navy as "dishing," which typically occurs when some junior officer "bumps" the ship into a pier or a bollard or something (or harbor tugs and other light watercraft "kiss" the hull). Of course, once the JO dings the ship he'll receive a chewing out from the executive officer and the more senior ship drivers, but don't ask me how I know that. ;-) Also, I was stationed in Hawaii, in 1998, when the Mighty Mo was towed across from the mothball fleet and tied up at its final berth over on Pearl Harbor's Ford Island. I and many others -- from all the military service branches, not just the Navy and Marine Corps (battleships once had a sizable Marine contingent on board) -- not to mention plenty of Americans from all walks of civilian life -- helped restore it to its former glory. The Iowa-class BBs were the height of U.S. non-aviation-related naval military technology for decades and through several refits as some of them were taken out of mothballs and then put back into active service. They're brutal war machines and not at all hesitant to display their mailed fists, and I say that admiringly.

Yeah man..... I'm thinking about getting some kind of rail system that will allow me to "roll" the camera along next to the ship. Right now I have to stand about 5 feet away from the model to get it to fit in the frame. And at that distance you can't see anything other than it is huge. But, I think its gonna have a lot of cool "areas" loaded with detail that I'll focus on from one episode to another.

Only other thing I’d ask is could you, if it’s allowed, to talk Cost on things??? I’m really curious what will go in to building these beautiful works of art. Thanks much for your videos and always looking for the next one. Regards snd be well! SammyC.

Hey Sammy. Cost varies depending on what parts you choose to use for your build. Most people have around $1200 into their kit. But you could easily get up to $2000. If you just build it out of the box, you’re looking at $500 for the cost of the kit. Which OTB builds into a very nice model.
@ishyab0112 жыл бұрын
@@TheMidwestModelShop wow. But yeah. That’s kinda what I thought the range would be. Unfortunately just about everything we do these days the cost is ever more expensive. i bought a 1/200 bismarck very early in my modeling career (mainly because it was big and only $200 aud), and it ended up being a pretty big mistake (for my situation at least). its very large, so it allows for LOTS of detail, but you have to pay extra for those details which i couldnt really afford, and i didnt really have a place to display it. its now been living under my bed for years tldr: make sure you have lots of $ and space before considering a kit of this size

This is so cool! Hey, maybe we can do this build together because I have been planning now since the beginning of the year to do this exact model. Planning on starting my purchase in the next few months and starting around fall for the build. Difference for me is I am planking my deck with real teak. Not sure yet how that will go since it is not paper thin and I may have to see what I can do to plane it, or figure out a way to either countersink the plastic deck to accommodate it, or just build the structure of the deck from scratch? But I definitely want to use the real teak wood and lay the deck that way. With my many years building wood ships that wont be a big challenge for me, but yea going to love watching your build for sure!
@TheMidwestModelShop5 жыл бұрын
Kevin Morrison well I'm down for helping each other out! I haven't done much research on this build. I just have an idea of how I want it to turn out. As far as the teak goes, have you looked into getting a piece of teak laminate? You would have to cut planks out of it, or scribe lines in it....but that was the first thing that came to mind. Feel free to send me an email any time. I like bouncing ideas off of people.
@kevinm37515 жыл бұрын
@@TheMidwestModelShop Sounds good, like you I want to build it the way it was the day of the signing. Even want to put the dent that was in the side of the deck rail. As for using teak laminate, I already have the deck boards and thinking about getting the kit with the deck like you have and using that as a template to layout the boards. Still might look into this laminate idea and see if it might be the better way, since what I have is kind of thick and would have to be planed down since currently I think it might be to thick.

I've built a mountain of model kits, but I've never built anything so huge and so detailed. The kits cost a few hundred dollars, here in Australia. When I eventually get around to buying a 1:200 scale kit, it will either be a ship, like that one, or there's also a submarine kit that has a cut-away side, showing interior detail. So if I buy 200 of these I can make a full size ship?

Well what are you waiting for?
@nicbruv3 жыл бұрын
Actually, according to math, no. 1/200 means that each dimension is 1/200, not the entire ship volume. You would need 8,000,000 of these, according to math.

It seems like not as many parts as i would expect? does it seem like just a blown up 1:350?
@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
At first it seems like it because this “is” just a bigger version of the same thing, right? Well when you get into some of the smaller parts you discover that instead of needing to glue 2 parts together, now there is detail for 5 parts.
@quattobeast4 жыл бұрын
@@TheMidwestModelShop I see. I stick to 1:700 for space and time reasons. but man alive I sure am enjoying watching you detail this sucker up. It looks like it could go to a museum when you are done. I especially like the work you did on the anchors.

And here I've got a 1/200th scale Missouri put away in the basement I haven't had the courage to start. Problem is I have to get the parts scanned first. It's a card model on A3 card stock. I think it was about 25 bucks. From GPM. Plus a 1/200th Lexington and Saratoga. The great thing about card models is if you screw something up just print another sheet. Plus they make great templates for doing scratch builds? Additionally you can re-scale easily. Lest any one start thinking, oh yeah, its paper I would suggest looking at a couple of different web sites. One is for MicroArtWork.com. The other is for Halinski Card Models. It has pictures of prototype card models in different stages of construction.

Nice model. Id really like a Lion Class Battleship model (HMS Conqueror 1939) but no one does the model annoyingly. Plus whats the best way to stick metal decorations onto plastic models. Im using industrial grade superglue but leaves a horrible stain and really hard and shit to use, i cant use my polycement as it doesn’t work great with plastic so how would you stick metal decorations onto your plastic model. Im currently doing a 1/35 Scale RFM Sturmmorser Tiger 38CM with full interior and its quite hard to get metal to stick so whats the best way to sick it for you.

Aircraft and small boats have propellers. Ships and subs have screws. Ladders, never stairs. "Forward" and "bow" are redundant. Stick with bow. You go forward and aft. The ship has a bow and stern. The Captain's or Admiral's Gig is what the boat is called. Forecastle is pronounced as fohk-suh l.
@maxdwyer87614 жыл бұрын
"Propeller" and "screw" are pretty much interchangeable, as they both are different words for pretty much the same thing. "Screw" comes from the fact that it functions like a [construction] screw to move fluid. This applies to all types of craft, for the same reason "airscrew" is a word (same as the "screws" you mention, but for use in air). But they're ALL still propellers. Aircraft have propellers, boats have propellers, submarines have propellers, ships have propellers, they're all propellers. Feel free to call it a screw, sure, but don't try to correct someone for saying propeller when you think it's screw, it's *always* propeller. Also, what's this: "Forecastle is pronounced as fohk-suh l."?

The r/c software alone to convert this 1:200 scale model ship,will cost around $400.00.The plastic model ship;with approximately 2,500 parts,will cost around $500.00 MSRP.The deluxe photoetched detail up set;for this kit,will cost an additional $300.00. So About a year to 3 years worth of work to build the kit;and convert it to r/c,you are looking at a total cost of more than $1,200.00.

Nice video,. You are correct that they are called Ladders. Vertical, and inclined. The ship's boats are called whale boats, launches, and the Captains Gig. The Iowa's did not have 50 caliber gun's. She carried 20 mm AA, 40 mm twin and quad mounts, 5"/38 twin mounts, and her 16" main gun's. The parts you call cleats, are called Bitts on large ship's and the half oval fittings are called chalks. Also in 44-45 the kingfisher float planes were replaced with Seahawk float planes. I couldn't tell if the clear moldings gave you both types or not?

Is there someplace within this series where you list each of the paint colors you've used? I saw where you mentioned intermediate blue and french light blue, but if there is one place where you mention all of the paint manufacturers and colors? That would really help me out. Enamel paints are becoming increasingly hard to find, so if there are alternative colors, that would be good to know too. I could do trial and error, but that seems like the hard way :-)
