Personally during his peak I thought geoff tate was the best, his vocals on operation mindcrime is phenomenal, and if you hear any of there concerts at that time or early 90's you just go wow whar a voice and what a range.

John & Eric: Even with the weaker songs on Dio's Sabbath albums, you can't go wrong at all. RJD was such an amazing singer and performer, he brought so much to any song he was on. His role as Dr. X on "Operation Mindcrime II" was the highlight of a weak sequel to Queensryche's original masterpiece "Operation Mindcrime". That says a lot as I'm a huge Queenstyche fan.

simgorm, you are entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to my facts. Rainbow's music was partly inspired by classical music since Blackmore started playing cello to help him construct interesting chord progressions, and Dio wrote lyrics about medieval themes. Dio possessed a versatile vocal range capable of singing both metal and lighter ballads, and according to Blackmore, "I felt shivers down my spine." Although Dio never played a musical instrument on any Rainbow album, he is credited with writing and arranging the music with Blackmore, in addition to writing all the lyrics himself, so even though it was Blackmore's band, Richie didn't put together ALL the music. simgorm That’s just flat out wrong. Do people fact check at all anymore? I swear it should be illegal to post comments without citations! In this case here all you have to do is read the damn credits on the album. Ritchie is a great musician and I love his work with Purple & early Rainbow but I get tired of hearing him get all the credit for everything he’s ever done. Believe it or not Ronnie was a musician and songwriter well before he ever thought of singing. He’d played and studied the trumpet since age 5 and was so good he was offered a Juilliard School of Music scholarship. It wasn’t until he was 16 that he was almost forced into singing because the lead singer of his band quit and no one else in the band could do it. The first recorded work he did was in1958 at age 16 and the A side was an instrumental called Conquest featuring Ronnie on the trumpet and the B side sing was sung by their lead singer Billy DeWolfe! When he quit the trumpet to sing he also picked up the bass guitar and played that for 14 more years including Elf’s first album in 1972. It was only after Elf was asked to join Deep Purple on the road for two works tours did he finally decide to concentrate on singing. You could almost make a case that Ronnie had more to do with the sound of Rainbow than Ritchie did... I mean look what happened after Ronnie quit the band... Ronnie went in to huge success with Sabbath and his own band. What did Ritchie do? Nothing... The last great song Ritchie will be remembered for will be Gates of Babylon.

I've been a metal fan all my life, and nobody's better than Dio. There are some singers on his level, for sure, but there was no one better. If I had to pick one of his bands, it'd be the albums he did with Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, and Dehumanizer. Musically, he and the Sabbath guys were just a perfect combo.

I was going to quote some of the things you said but instead I'll just say you aren't the only one who gets the "happy stomach" and wants a good joyous cry hearing his voice. Ive heard this song too many times to remember and I still get goosebumps when he sings the line "Where is your star?" I saw him live in Greensboro, NC on tour supporting the first Dio (the band) album, Holy Diver in 1983 or 84. Your comments about his movements are dead on. In concert he was mesmerizing. RRT - Dio's contemporaries would be Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Klaus Meine (Scorpions) & Eric Adams (Manowar). Further back to hard rock would be Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Freddie Mercury (Queen), Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free) & even Steven Tyler (Aerosmith). Of course it's all subjective to each of ours ears, experiences and opinions. For me it's Dio-Halford in a tie, the others aren't far behind. Glad you like the Dio \m/ \m/

RRT...I'm disabled and because of that I don't have much interaction with other people...I get it here. Since I have a history of music...a voice major...music plays an important part of my life, still. Dio expresses joy, pain, frustration and sorrow in a beautiful way that we can all appreciate. He expresses it the way we all wish we could. I have enjoyed watching your appreciation of his music and your respect for him. One song that too many people seem to miss is "Catch the Rainbow". It's in two parts...which is a shame, but it is worth the trouble to watch. Not only are the vocals beautiful, the guitar solo and the progressions in the song are perfection. God bless you and all the many fans of Ronnie James Dio and the bands he has been in. Thanks for sharing your love of music and how it has filled your life with memories that will never end. The band is actually called Ritchie Blackmore´s Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore is the guitarist and is mostly known from the other famous an iconic band Deep Purple. He started this Rainbow and got Dio to sing in it. The song Stargazer is one of the greatest songs in the story of heavy rock and you should definitely play it when you are driving your car on the highway pretty loud or just having a good party alone at home

A lot of what you see on stage with hand gestures (pulling shapes) is - as explained once by Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden - for the folks in the back. It's show biz, theatrics, and they practiced these songs every night, which means Dio didn't have to be in front of a mirror. He simply tried some stuff on stage in front of audiences, and what felt good or got a positive response he kept. He built up a whole repertoire of gestures (including the malocchio) and vocalisms that he was able to use in concerts. Check out Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Freddy Mercury of Queen. Those guys are really good at emoting using their voice alone. It's like voice acting in song. I like your enthusiasm for Dio, and I would suggest a couple of good ones: Master of the Moon - it''s an underrated classic. Also, Dio is my favorite vocalist ever. Period. My close second is Floor Jansen of Nightwish. She is incredibly skilled and incredibly passionate. My thing with Dio though, and you said it about making your belly smile, there is a quality to His voice, an edge to it, that I've never heard from anyone else. It's there even when he sings in higher ranges. It's almost a grit but not quite. I call it a richness, like it always fills up the space around you and in you completely.

I remember back in the late 80's, I was lucky enough to get to see Dio in concert for the 'Dream Evil' tour with Megadeth as opener. You mentioned about practicing specific movements and such.. and it is this to which I am commenting... About a month prior to going to see the concert.. maybe a bit less than a month.. there was a 'live' broadcast of the 'Dream Evil' concert on MTv.. which I did watch. When I went to the actual concert I noticed something... the band members 'moved' to the exact same locations during specific parts of songs.. Dio would stand behind the guitarist and give the metal horns at the exact same part of the song as the prior live broadcast, etc.. The stageshow is very well rehearsed and choreographed... and it turns out there are several good reasons for this. 1) The stage is normally dark, with bright lights shining into the faces of the performers.. they are near-blind up there most of the time.. so they need to know 'where' they are at all times so tey do not trip over each other or bump into each other. 2) They have to be in specific locations to be safe from moving equipment (They had a mechanical spider and a mechanical dragon in this specific tour) and from pyrotechnics.. (otherwise ya have Michael Jackson's flaming hair.. or James Hetfield's face on fire) 3) They do not have to 'think' about where to 'go' or what to 'do' next.. it's preplanned, rehearsed and memorized.. so they can focus more on their performance. This is just through my observation of the live broadcast and subsequent live show I attended. Was quite the eye opener when I realized these things. Peace

That is Ronnie James Dio in the 1970's. His career as a professional singer spanned over 5 Decades. In the 60's and early 70's he was in a band called "The Electric Elves", which then became Elf. This song is written from the perspectives of one of the slaves forced to build the Tower of Babel. Dio connects with us on a spiritual and emotional level. He sings with such conviction and power that it hits home. Check this out. I'm 50 years old. When I was a kid, they used to run this little cartoon during the Saturday Morning Cartoons. The animation was done by the guys in Monty Python's Flying Circus. I always thought this was a woman singing this, but it is a 32-year old Ronnie Dio, before he joined Rainbow. This record was made by Roger Glover, the bass-guitarist from the band Deep Purple. RJD was the first vocalist in Rainbow, 1976, 3 albums, then he left joined Black Sabbath in '79, after Ozzy was fired. With Sabbath, 2 studio albums, Heaven n Hell, Mob Rules, and Live Evil( live album cuts from the Mob Rules tour) then he embarked on his solo career, first album, Holy Diver('83).

You're right about proficiency versus heart ( or soul). It's the same with cooking. You can follow a recipe by the numbers and make something that taste good. But a chef who puts passion into every dish takes it to a new level. Dio is a wizard. I've met him. He was a genuinely sweet person, too.

DIO makes my belly smile too. His Voice is just something very special, in a genre littered with many very good singers. I can be having a crappy day, plop in any song Ronnie's sang on, and instantly, the sun shines and the stars dance in the heavens. Ronnie always wrote thought provoking lyrics, because He Himself was a super smart person. (graduated Top Of The Class, among many other accolades just in high school) I like to think Ronnie was Music made flesh, if that makes any sense. '58 Ronnie & The Rumblers/Redcaps/Prophets. (same band, renamed for various reasons, Ronnie started it in high school) Prophets was later morphed into The Electric Elves/Elves/ and finally at the suggestion of Ian Paice and Roger Glover of Deep Purple to just Elf, and they were an opening act for eight tours with Deep Purple, then Blackmore stole a bunch of elves for himself and made Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, (as the first Rainbow album was titled) second one was Rainbow Rising, and the third one with Ronnie was Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. Ritchie wanted to be more commercial.(radio friendly, and Ronnie was not having it, so He left the band. He was not fired, as some have said, Ronnie always maintained that as fact, in many interviews when asked about it.)

This is a dope song. I'll be honest, I knew RB started this band but never really listened to it. I've said it before, Dio has a very theatrical voice, I'm sure he could have done something on Broadway. And I'll disagree with you about him practicing. That's something you're born with. Some people are singers and some people are what you call frontmen. He's definitely that. Blackmore's guitar playing is among the best ever.

DIo was in a band called Elf who opened for Deep Purple. When Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore did what was originally a solo album called Ritchie Blaclmore's Rainbow he used the band Elf as his band. Then he officially left Deep Purple replaced all the members of Elf except Dio and the band Rainbow was formed. Rainbow with Dio recorded two more studio albums before Blackmore and Dio parted ways. Rainbow when on with one album with Graham Bonnett as the new singer and then with Joe Lynn Turner for three more studio albums before Blackmore reunited with Deep Purple for a few more albums. After leaving Deep Purple again he did one more Rainbow album with Doogie White on vocals and then went on to form Blackmore's Night with his wife Candace Night to do Renasiance music. Dio joined Black Sabbath for a couple albums before going out on his own.

Dio was always my favorite no matter what band he was in from '57/2010 their were none much better. This song may be the greatest hard rock song ever wrote/composed. The most lofty is And then there was Silence from the mighty Blind Guardian.

I saw Dio live some years ago. He was so, so good. Cozy Powell on drums is a legend and so is also Ritchie Blackmoore on the guitar. I used to come home from school and before ma had prepared lunch I would listen to this song on headphones. I still have the original - I would never ever sell it.

IMHO there aren't any singers in metal/hard rock that are "better" than Dio but there are plenty of excellent singers. Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Jorn Lande, Geoff Tate, Michael Kiske, Blackie Lawless, Glen Hughes, Ian Gillen, John Arch, and plenty more. Great post.

Ronnie James Dio was born 10. July 1942. In 1957 he started his musical journey, playing bass, then later singing. He was in bands like Ronnie and the Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, ELF, Rainbow, Black Sabbath (replacing Ozzy), and in 1983 he started his own band DIO. Ozzy had used the V sign when he toured with Sabbath, Dio invented the sign of the horns 🤘 in 1980. After Ozzy did a tour with Black Sabbath in 2005, they agreed that they would only use the name Black Sabbath with Ozzy on vocals, so when they reunited with Dio in 2007 they used the name Heaven & Hell. I saw them in Oslo in 2009. Later that year he was diagnosed with cancer, and he died 16. May 2010.

I've seen him live several times. I gotta say, you almost made me tear up. That's how I felt . I met my SO the day he died. It was our first date. I got in his car, and he turned to me and said "Dio died today;" We ended the date just sitting at his house smoking, talking, and listening to his Dio collection all night. That's one way I knew he was the man for me!

IAN GILLAN, 1969 to 1979. Other years 1983(Black Sabbath) and 1991 (Toolbox album). Otherwise hard to find the right examples as to why he's so influential because of other styles he's done over the rest of the years. Even his buddy Dio knew this.

Rainbow was actually Ritchie Blackmore's band (the lead guitarist). He started it after he left the previous band he started... you might know them (Deep Purple). Cozy Powell is on the drums. Led Zeppelin was considering him as John Bonham's replacement. Another legend. Great band, great song.

Dio is truly a metal god... Another great vocalist is a woman called Floor Jansen. This is the first video of yours I've watched so I don't know if you've seen her perform, but I'd suggest listening to Nightwish - Ghost love score 2013 version or later (especially the Wacken version). She is their new vocalist. She used to be with a band called After Forever which is also great.

The human brain likes patterns, it likes order. Yeah, the guitar is just squeals, but when you squeal in a recognisable pattern the brain will enjoy it. Humans are all different, that’s why we all like different types of music. Each individual brain likes certain noises in certain orders, but all music has got at least some rhythm to it. The brain registers input, in this case music, with rhythm & it will eventually grow to like it.

Rainbow was a band that was started by ex Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. He recruited Ronnie James Dio, an unknown at the time, to be his vocalist. Dio and Blackmore later parted ways due to musical differences. Dio then went on to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath. After 2 albums, Ronnie quit Black Sabbath and formed his own band "Dio", which went on to achieve vast commercial success. So, in essence, Ronnie James Dio has been the lead singer for 3 legendary heavy metal bands.

Gave a like for the attempted stick throwing, alone. Many will suggest Judas priest and Rob Halford for a similar vocalist. He is a legend, with multiple singing styles. I would suggest Blood Red Skies for a first listen. It's not their best or most popular song, but Halford 's voice is very powerful in this one.

I consider myself to be a fortunate person to have actually met Ronnie James Dio many years ago, Probably 1989 or 1990, I was about 21 years old, What an amazing voice, And I have seen him perform as well, And no... In my opinion there has never been a better singer in metal, Iron Maiden is about as close as I think anyone ever came. Thanks for the video reaction to Stargazer by Rainbow, It was epic.
