Last week some silly facebook chain letter asked me to name the "best song overall" - and my choice was stargazer. Dio was one of my favorite vocalists. Blackmore on Guitar (while being no Vai or Gilbert) is a master of the Guitar. The Drums and the the arrangement, the Synths in the Background, the solos and an the story being told in this song is a superb combination. When I heard this song the first time it struck me - and that was more than 35 Years ago.

This version of Rainbow was incredible. Three legends with Dio, Blackmore, and Cozy Powell on drums. I saw Dio live in the early 80s (yes I'm old as fuck) and he was something special. You could not take your eyes off him. I love seeing young folks listening to this stuff and getting it. It makes me sad though that you'll never get the chance to see him live.

The Dio love is pretty heartwarming. He was a huge influence and inspiration for generations of musicians, and so very few have reached the same heights he did. It's always nice to see people finally tune in and see the raw, unrestrained talent in his work. If you like music that tells a story like this one, I HAVE to recommend Coheed and Cambria's music. One of their most well-known is Welcome Home, but Sentry The Defiant, Domino the Destitute, or (especially) The Dark Sentencer from their upcoming album are all amazing songs with actual stories attached to them- the band wrote comic books and actual short stories to accompany their music. Said stories aren't required to appreciate the music, and oh god are C&C talented, but they're half the fun. If you plan on doing your usual research, I'd recommend saving it until after you've heard the song or songs or album, so you can appreciate the music itself first.

React to Helloween - I want out. Helloween is a band that appeared in the mid 80's, have a sound that refers to Iron, Judas Priest and other bands of the time. Highlights include vocalist Michael Kiske who reaches sharp and extensive notes with extreme ease, and lines of melodic guitars. This song in question portrays how much we are suffocated in different spheres of coexistence within society, and there comes a time that we really "want to get out".

Dude I'm can't tell you how happy I am to see you react to this song. I was first introduced to it by a good friend while driving around in a car and it was a mix tape. That's right I said "tape". The first time I heard it I didn't know what I just heard. The second time I listened to it. I cried. Years later I had met someone who was wearing a Rainbow shirt. We got talking and I explained my experience and turns out he cried his second time listening to it too. It's my favorite song of all time and I to consider it perfect. It was interesting to hear you make that mention too. There is something truly magical about this song from a very deep level. The music has so many layers to it but the layers don't feel stacked but rather melted into each other. Thanks for this.

Believe it or not, I have watched probably close to 10 of these KZbin reaction videos for Stargazer. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST ONE. I'm a long time metal fan, and a huge fan of RJ Dio. This song is definitely one of his best vocal productions ever. Pair that with Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Cozy Powell's drumming, and you've got a really unique, epic masterpiece. Now on the subject of the vocals and instruments going brilliantly together time to do my usual request, Kingdom (live at EMGTV) by Devin Townsend. In my ever changing list of best vocalists two that will never leave the top 5 is 'evvy Devvy and Ronnie James Dio. I will warn you about the good ol' canadian devil, it is a very deep rabbit hole of musical masterpieces ranging from the most extreme of extreme metal to country and some of the most beautiful songs written in the last 25 years. Hey Alex, so glad you love that song. You talking about goosebumps, it's how i felt when I first turned the record over to side 2 back in '76. What also makes this song super great for me is the using real orchestra for the coda. Now you gotta react to the part 2 of this saga... "A Light in the Black". It's twice as fast and epic with phenomenal solos from both Ritchie on guitar and a very young Tony Carey on keys, and Cozy Powell's drum intro will leave your mouth wide open. And of course, you got the god like voice of the late RJD. Also highly recommended song by Rainbow from Dio period is "Gates of Babylon" You won't be disappointed.

It's not Dio but Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and Cozy Powell on drums. It was Blackmore that gave Dio a chance to become a legend. This is one of the best line ups in History. Blackmore is a genius.

And don't forget Tony Carey on keyboards, and the late great Jimmy Bain on bass. This line up was also on the killer live album Rainbow On Stage which featured the first appearance of Kill The King which then appeared in a slightly altered version on Long Live Rock'N'Roll. Slightly altered because David Stone had replaced Tony Carey on keyboards and Bob Daisley had taken over for Jimmy Bain on bass at that point. The late great RJD was still the lead vocalist, and the late great Cozy Powell was still slamming the drum skins like the beast he was. That WHOLE album is awesome. If you want to hear how amazing Dio was as a vocalist and lyricist, check out at very least the songs "Kill The King", "Lady of the Lake", "Gates of Babylon", and "Rainbow Eyes" By itself, "Rainbow Eyes" is quite possibly one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking ballads Ronnie James Dio EVER sang. And he truly sang on that one. Pretty song, pretty vocal, pretty guitar. Very Spartan song. Pretty much Ritchie playing guitar and Ronnie singing. That's it. (But just from hearing this song, you kind of see where Ritchie's later Renaissance project Blackmore's Night came from.) Ronnie used to say he never sang/wrote love songs, but if "Rainbow Eyes" is NOT a love song? I don't know what is. Sounds like one to me. :-)

How can you not love Ronnie Dio?!?! Sometimes we forget just how fucking great this man was. Even for those select few who weren't in line the day God was handing out ears you still have to thank him because time and time again he raised the bar and made other musicians work that much harder to put out quality music. Without a doubt the single most influential metal artist ever as well as the humblest and most gracious person I've ever had the privilege of meeting. There will never be another like him.

This was awesome! Stargazer is one of metals great compositions. Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie were a perfect match. This song and album are epic, grand, cinematic. It's a masterpiece. A Light In the Black is it's sister song on the album. I loved this song since I was a preteen. Toney Carey on Keys, Jimmy Bain on bass, Cozy Powell on drums and the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra joins at the end. I'm glad you liked it so much Alex. I always have as well. This is one of the greatest songs ever written. I hope you've listened some more, there's a lot to absorb in this.

I love the Ritchie Blackmore eras of Deep Purple big time, but Rainbow in my opinion is his greatest creation ever! I am so glad that he left Deep Purple and created the band Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore was at his peak in guitar playing and songwriting during his Rainbow days. This song is a MASTERPIECE!!! It is so PHENOMENAL to this day.

Here, Alex, you are facing a DOUBLE greatness and epicness - you have Dio here (and I think his Rainbow albums were the best masterpieces he has done in his whole career), and you also have that guitar god Ritchie Blackmore! One of the best guitarists in the world, the best albums Deep Purple had, they had with HIM! Hey, even triple greatness here, there's also magnificient Cozy Powell on drums!

I second this motion!! From 1982-1988, Queensryche had the most amazing vocalist in the world....Geoff Tate. As a teenager, he was trained by his aunt, who was an opera singer. He was the first metal vocalist with an operatic background and style. He could hit high notes with incredible power. The song listed above is an amazing song. They later put out what I consider the best metal album of the decade with "Operation Mindcrime."...which was a concept album that told a story from beginning to end....truly epic. Queensryche's first live show was for record executives. Their very fist song "Queen of the Ryche" will literally pin you to your seat with the vocal range and power. When I first heard it, I swore it was studio tricks.....I saw them live that same year.....and left shaking my head in awe.

It's hard for me to choose which Queensryche song is actually "best"...so I always just go with the one that caught me up in it first. I used to hear this one (on pure accident)every time I was on an LSD trip. It "floored" me every time. And, of course, it is "Queen of the Reich".

I had the privilege of seeing a Ronnie Dio concert with Black Sabbath in the early 1990s, and the amazing drumming of Cozy Powell 3 times (Michael Shenker Group, Whitesnake & Black Sabbath in the 1980s). But Ritchie's neo-classical rock guitar playing is on a different level. He's as good in concert as on record & quite honestly makes most rock guitarists sound like they really shouldn't have bothered.
