I started the 30 day minimalist challenge...and by January 9th...I had discarded so many items I stopped counting after 500...I am continuing this journey in a way I never thought I would. Aftee my parents passed away my sister took on a lot of their items. When my brother passed away she absorbed his "stuff"...while battling cancer for 14 years her way of dealing with it was to hold onto items so she could "pass them on to family" ...and that family...was me. I put things in my garage and closets because of the grief ...but now I realize that I do not need things to remember them or to keep their memories alive. My grown children have been with me through a lot of this and we had very deep heartfelt discussions about what is important and what is not. They do not wish to "inherit" this "stuff"...nor do I want them to. Letting it go! Keeping only what brings joy and value to my life and the life of my family!!!!! Welcome 2019!

Love you guys! Great video. Not easy letting go, its a work in progress for me. I found I was holding onto resentment and anger for so long that it was actually changing me as a person into this bitter, angry dude. Add to that depression & alcoholism and it was a terrible mix. I'm now 3 months sober and my mind is clearer than it has been for many years. Now I'm slowly letting go of the past and trying to make ammends for damage ive done to friends and relationships. Ive already decluttered the house, decluttering my Soul is ongoing! You guys have been a big help. Also, gotta say, you got a cool Jeff Goldblum vibe. Anyone else notice this? Looking forward to the new season. All the best, have a great 2019!

I like how with your message, you let people know, it's what works for them. They don't have to do Minimalism one certain way. You give us so many things to think about. Thank you.

I think I can relate to this. The false belief of our stuff being us. Yesterday I let go of a leather chair. Really comfortable to sit and sunk in. In our current apartment it just was in the way all the time and used for clothing piles. When I thought about it more thoroughly, I had dragged the chair 12 years with me and it had been in five different apartments, the current being the 5th. The times I had actually sat in it were only a few times. So I gave it away, although at first it felt like I can't because the chair was like a "long time friend" How silly.

Thanks to you guys I have been able to detach from my possessions so that they no longer own me and I have control over them. Thanks to you guys I have donated over ten bins of clothing, books and other stuff that was just collecting dust in my home - and they will make someone else a lot happier than they made me. I'm forever grateful for your podcasts and videos to allow me to become more like myself! Sending my condolences to Ryan and his family at this difficult time

I'm working on it constantly, started few years back. Selling, giving away, recycling etc. etc. etc. Life is simpler. My wife and I have a rule, if we don't use it for a year, we don't need it. This can be applied to VERY many things (most?!). It is interesting that we attach so much of "us" to things, but not much to God. PS. This is very minimalist comment section ;)

I'm 18 and so still live with my family. How can I help my family to let go of things when I have to take the burden? For example, a chest of drawers in my room that I have no use for, as I've gotten rid of everything inside them, but I have to keep them as my parents don't want to get rid of them. What do you do when people force the responsibility of their clutter onto you? Love the work you guys do and hope you keep making meaningful content. All my condolences to Ryan and his family.

Since you're 18 either move it to a storage place like basement or garage or simply get rid of it! You're a 18 year old MAN

Im in the same situation as you, I live with my parents and I can't throw a table that I don't use anymore, neither donate clothes that I don't use and are new because an aunt give it to me many years ago and didn't fit me, it's frustrating and because my room is more empty, my parents use half of my closet to accumulate children toys, old clothes, bed sheets, Christmas decoration and other things
@hyunjusong29346 жыл бұрын
@@kamishy_Art wow that really sucks, your parents using half your closet. I'd be so stressed.... If I were you, I'd voice my opinions what it's doing to me in a polite and respectful way and see if they'd care.... They might not understand at first, but I'd keep trying.... >
@michaelharrison94286 жыл бұрын
@Chelsea Norum Yes we have a garage but as my dad's a hoarder, there is no room at all. It certainly does inspire me to minimise more though and it has helped me to understand what I'll need when I finally move out :)
@michaelharrison94286 жыл бұрын
@@kamishy_Art I definitely understand, when I try to give my family their things back, they can't understand why because I have so much 'free space'. Could you perhaps sell it can give them the money, or even take the table apart so if you 'have' the keep it, it will at least take up less space?
@ahoardersheart6 жыл бұрын
“How do I let go?” I am trying to figure out that answer. You see, as I hoarder I have an OCD attachment to my things...it triggers panic attacks to let go of certain items. But I will find the answer...and when I do, I will help every hoarder in this world heal from it too.

This is belated, but now still works: what are some options for minimalist housing? I know of Airbnb and rooms to rent on Craigslist, but I'm looking for long-term single room occupancies. I'm not in dire straits and would rather give someone with lower income than me such housing. Although, as a writer, my lifestyle, passion, and career requires solitude; roommates would not like simple, yet technical me. Thank you Joshua and Ryan!

Maybe she means, “How do you get past the hurdle of emotions that come up when you are trying to discard and live with less” I’m not personally, emotionally attached to very many items, but I know that some people are. They find it difficult to discard and live without those things. I tell myself that, these items don’t make me who I am. I can live without them and still have memories. I ask myself, “Do I want to care for and maintain this items”? The answer is usually, No. I do not want to look after this item. That helps me to let go.

I have 2 storage units one that belongs to me and the other that holds my mother's belongings. She passed away in August of 2017. It's not the stuff that is hard to let go of it's the idea that it was something she liked or enjoyed. It is her thoughts that connects her to those items that is hard to let go. I don't want to forget what she liked or loved. Any advice? Thank you and enjoy your podcast.

Sorry to hear that your Mum passed away. It's hard to let her stuff go, but as you know it needs to be done. First of all this stuff is not your Mum. When you get rid of you don't lose the memory of her. Her stuff is now just stored. Wouldn't she be happy if it's donated and used by someone else? Instead of laying on your shoulders like a burden? Maybe you can take photos of what she loved. You'll keep you Mum in your heart, let her stuff go.

How do I let go with the need of closure? And I'm not talking about intimacy closure, I'm talking about websites. Over the years I've signed up to a lot of websites, shopping, social, places I no longer visit but - knowing that they have my email adress and my name, and sometimes my face. It makes me so uneasy to think about it, all these sites. So many of them don't have a "delete my account" button, and the hassle of finding an email adress to contact them to ask them to delete my account... I just want to care about what matters to me right now, but my sign ups from the past haunts me, I just want to let it all go. I don't need this. Someone help

How do you get rid of things you know will hurt someone? Example, I have my Dads first piano, he worked and saved his own money for it and has many memories including learning on it... I’m at a point I could let go of the piano and many objects like this, but I know it could really cause some issues and even effect that particular relationship which is way more important to me so any advice 🤷♀️.
