I have simplified a little bit, but after this video...I am going to do it again. I already have items in quarantine, and I think it's time to get rid of those. I truly only wear 5 or 6 shirts in my closet and about 4 of my house shirts. I won't even discuss pants. 🤫 I have fluctuated from a small to an extra large over the last few years...back and forth. Trying this time around to stick to a healthy life style (it's been a year and a half, but still fluctuate between med and large.) Thank you for this encouraging video.

Years ago farmhouses did not have closets in them. A wealthy home would have an armoire, but a farmhouse didn't have an armoire or a closet. People who lived on the farm had two sets of clothes, one for Sundays and special occasions, and one for the week - one or two "work dresses" and an apron worn over it. They either folded their clothes into a trunk of hung them on a hanger from a nail in the wall. They were minimalists too :)

Yep. And this is why we're significantly pairing down our clothing in prep to move to our 1870 farmhouse soon!
@EmmaAppleBerry4 жыл бұрын
Yeah and most just had multiple linen shifts which was under wear and pyjamas AND if they wore a wedding dress it was a hand me down or would also be what they were buried in and theyd cut it up for christening clothing or they just wear their nicest dress they already owned! Usually a sunday church dress. Anything that got worn beyond repair was cut up for quilts or rags sewn into other things like childrens clothing and if outgrown then given to a friend or a younger sibling or even made into dolls clothes so the little girl and doll matched!

I always remember so fondly when I moved to the UK from Australia for a working holiday when I was 20. I had 1 large suitcase and a carry on bag. Those contained all of my possessions, including clothes, shoes, accessories etc. It was a true capsule wardrobe. I went to the laundry mat only once a week. Life was so much simpler and many times I’ve reminisced about how living out of a suit a case made life simple. I know, I'm 2 years late, but nevermind... 😀 I had a colour analysis done a couple of years ago and had an identity crisis after that, because I wanted to be the autumn-type, but I ended up being a summer-winter-mix.Thankfully the frustration only lasted for a couple of days and now I LOVE my new colours because they just make me look so much healthier 🙂 It helped me a lot with creating a more minimal wardrobe because I realised that not everyone has to or can wear black, white and beige as neutrals. Instead my basics are dark blue, wine red and forrest green and I love them 🙂

Thank you Dawn! I saw one of your videos (I don't even remember which one) a couple of weeks ago and it has truly sparked change. I was starting to go through some depression and was constantly trying to "escape" my stress and clutter. It was just too overwhelming. I still have a long way to go and am only on my first onion layer, but already I feel like I can breath again and am finding a rekindled contentment in my home. I will watch a video and then declutter one space or drawer before I allow myself to watch another. I feel like you're a friend cheering me on along the way. =) I have gone back and watched most of your previous videos now and even though I tend to be on the more serious side have caught myself laughing out loud and something you (or Tom) say. My favorite was your 100k subscriber video where Tom and Diana were talking about you going into other people's homes and you started listing the entourage it would take to make that happen and Tom says "That doesn't seem very minimal" hahaha I actually spit out my water laughing when he said that. You make me smile and I am thankful for your channel.

I just wanted to tell u that I’ve suffered from anxiety/panic attacks and depression for many years. There r ways to help put it in remission. As u know, it never truly goes away and everyone is different but when my anxiety was at its worst, I learned from different KZbinrs to b mindful of your space. For instance, keep your countertops cleared off. I tried to make around my bathtub like a spa w/Epsom salt in a pretty dish, fancy soap etc... I bought a really beautiful crystal vase and every week I pick up a pretty bouquet of fresh flowers from the grocery store. These tiny changes have really helped me and I also have had friends that come over say how relaxing and peaceful it is in my home which really made me feel good. Be patient with yourself and do what u can do when u can and eventually u will get there. I wish u the very best☺️

@Silrielmavi4 жыл бұрын
I did something like this based on one of your older videos, and it is SUCH a relief to only have the clothes I'm wearing /right now/ and that fit and are comfortable in this moment. I had my husband do the same with his clothes, and our room feels way better! I've done something similar with our kids' clothes. Before I'd just have anything and everything that was close to fitting them out at any given time, and was drowning in laundry. Now I'm about 2 weeks into doing this and laundry went from "I've done 10 loads and there's still 10 to do" to "There's a total of 4 loads, and we used a lot of towels this week." I'm finally getting to laundry that I've been putting off for months because the clothes laundry was so daunting. The bit that made the biggest difference to me was putting the clothes "in quarantine" as you say. I would have such a huge hangup with getting rid of anything, now I'm putting the clothes into bins boxes and bags with the intent that I'll go through it again, even if I end up taking it to the thrift store. I still feel like I have the option to go through them again. It's not the end of the line for the items. I've also been working on this with my kids' toys and other items. We're going through room by room and only keeping what actually goes with that room's purpose, everything else is going into a different place until we decide to keep it or find its home. You and Cass from Clutterbug have been such a huge huge help in my journey. I grew up in a home that was always messy and I have learned how to clean as an adult. This process is helping me be a better mom and it's helping my mental health as well! Thank you so much!

I really appreciate your videos. It was two days after stumbling across and watching your videos that I went to bed thinking so differently about MY STUFF. For years I kept thinking that we are so poorly organized and need more shelves or storage to get our STUFF organized. This issue with stuff was actually stressing me to no end. And I eventually began to realized that my husband (much more than I) and I latched on to a hoarding mentality. I see where you are actually teaching your viewers to think in a different way concerning clutter. As you said in this video concerning our wardrobe, as we look at our clothes our thoughts do often veer to how we don't fit in some, don't like the way some fit, etc, and many of us just keep pulling out the clothes we favor and wear them over and over. You do provide some very good insight to the actual way in which we think towards clutter. Your video content has greatly helped me to see things differently about STUFF, and motivated me in the right direction. And for that, I'm very thankful. Thank you so much for this video. Yesterday morning I wanted to get dressed but couldn’t find anything (I’m four months postpartum for the fourth time, been here before 😅😅). Had such a meltdown, it was terrible. And I spent last Saturday thrift shopping for clothes thinking my problem would be solved- it wasn’t. I saw a recommendation for you on Cas’s Facebook page from a commenter this week- I loved your stuff immediately and have been watching a video for encouragement everyday. We recently moved and now that we’re unpacking I really learned how I had TOO MUCH to deal with. I finished your wardrobe method yesterday evening and I felt SO MUCH PEACE afterwards. It makes so much sense and even though I have the same clothes as before, and actually less even though I’d already gone through them several times, I don’t feel stressed. I have a list of a few things to fill in the gaps but I’m actually excited about it, knowing what I actually want and need for a wardrobe I’ll wear! I actually made a list on my phone of my whole wardrobe because I am a words person and I don’t have to try to remember what I liked in my wardrobe for later when my sizes are changing again. 🤷🏼♀️ Anyway, thank you again, this was seriously a lifesaver. I will be recommending this video to anyone struggling to declutter their clothes. Oh and a tip for anyone like me, I actually had to hang all my clothes because the separation of certain pants or shirts in a drawer instead of with the others hanging would make me feel all over the place.

I think this is easier if you live somewhere with defined seasons. Here in Scotland we can have three seasons in one week. I’ve worn a summer dress then thermals and woollens two days later. The wardrobe you chose I would be able to wear for about a month in the year

Perfect. I’m doing it....again. I always get sidetracked by the things ‘I love’ as if my closet is a scrapbook or memory container. Are the conditions right to wear it...no? But do I let it hang there and take up prime real estate?... yes. I’m going back in to tackle it.

After many years of clinging to “special occasion” clothes, I’ve finally adopted the policy of donating dress clothes, such as dresses I wear to weddings, after I wear them. There’s no benefit to those items hanging in my closet when someone else could use them.
@jemma504 жыл бұрын
Good idea, Julie. I have been hanging on to more dressy clothes that I used to wear to work, but I'm retired now and rarely have occasion to wear them anymore. Do I hang on to them 'in case' a situation comes up when I need something dressier? It hasn't happened in the last 3 1/2 years, so maybe not! ;)
@elizabethanne16324 жыл бұрын
I finally found a "special occasion" outfit I liked (just one) and got rid of the rest. It felt so bizarre but also so awesome - now I never stress about what to wear to a wedding or special dinner.

Yes!!! Im at this point too. I've kept a couple classic dresses, a black and navy. They will work for anything in a pinch and if I want something specific for an event I'll go get it, I likely wouldn't shop my own closet anyways! Better to pass it on than let it go out of style in my closet.

I don’t actually have a minimalist wardrobe, but I do wear all of my clothes. I’ve gotten rid of anything with small stains, tiny holes,etc. the majority of my clothes are fairly neutral so I can always find something to go with another piece. I also have some colored clothes, mostly stripes…no patterns…for when I feel the need for color. But….my biggest breakthrough was to stop buying clothes, shoes and even jewelry for a life I wasn’t even living! I also don’t “save” clothes, shoes or jewelry anymore. I wear/use everything. Just this particular change made a big difference for me.

Hi Dawn. I love your videos. I have been so happy since I started going threw everything. Donated lots of stuff. Got rid of the trash. I have been talking about minimal living. Yes I post about it on Facebook and when I talk to my friends I talk about it. I have one friend that I talk to and when I am doing something good for myself she says something negative. I just got off the phone with her. She told me she does not want to talk about me becoming a minimalist. She said I am running it into the ground. She also said she was sure my other friends feel that way they just don’t tell me. Wow I have been so happy I have not been physically able to go through my apartment and my health was so bad I could barely clean it. I had back surgery December of 2019. I can do things now. I would say I am 80 percent better than I was at this time last year. I believe God has given me a miracle by healing my back with the surgery. I can tell by watching your videos that you are happy. I want that happiness. Has anyone of your friends or family told you something like my friend told me.

I somewhat did this two months ago. I removed all of my too small clothing and clothes I knew I wasn't going to wear. Then I washed all of my dirty laundry. I sorted from that what I had to have and put it away. Without looking at the rest, I put them into tubs, just dumped it in tubs, and put them in our "catch all" storage room. If I don't need them next year, I'll donate. I only own a week and a half worth of clothing. I have 1 decent dress so I'm ok. If I have to work outside of the house, I'm sunk. Good will doesn't carry my size. But I'm working on it. Thank you for sharing.

I love this! We practice this method when we comb beaches for seashells. We can only keep what we can carry. So after a while we ask if we like the new found shell more than one already in our hands. I love fitting into our space and I find even with simplifying my clothes I still don’t use even half of it all.

The approach is a good idea. I like that you considered having stay at home clothes vs. all to go out & see others in. It keeps our most liked, special outfits that we love & look best in more long lasting, especially when it might be hard to find things we REALLY like or that we look our best in. Thank you for the video.

Thank you for this! After watching, I did an initial round of "Is this something I commonly pass over?" and it was super clarifying. I love this idea of “quarantine” for clothes, makes the decision not quite so final. What would you suggest as a waiting time- a month?
@thoselittlehands53884 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on what you do, if you go to work outside like her, so she will keep them until the pandemic is over because she will go back to her old activities and might need more than 5 dressy tops. For me, I'm pregnant, so Im going to keep them until i give birth and few months in because from my experience, i will go back to my old shape and i will need my old clothes. I just have one bin in the attic, and thats ok, it's not considered clutter.

I quarantine the clothes for the season. For example, if I’m quarantining the summer clothes, then I label the bin “donate in October” and if I haven’t missed the items by then, I’ll donate it in October. You might quarantine your fall clothes around Labor Day and then check your quarantine bin in January.

I recently donated a duffel bag stuffed full of clothes WITHOUT checking what was in it. I'd been stuffing for about five years without donating and didn't even remember what I'd put in. I was scared to look for fear I'd decide to keep items I obviously did NOT need!

It's also hard buying now because so much stuff is either made cheaper, wrong fabric - e.g. I hate polyester now, or not sewn right. Sewing yourself can cost too much or look cheapo.

I LOVE this idea. My closet is absolutely stuffed with clothes from size 10 to size 20 that have all fit at some point within the last five years. The "spark joy" and "thank it for its service" mantras actually did work well for me to a point, but then I hit roadblocks. The idea of choosing those clothes that are my actual favorites and quarantining everything else is exactly the compromise I need. I'm so excited to get started TODAY!
