I have the same headlight/drl/idiot light setup on my Speedmaster. To me, it makes sense. You're going to want your headlight on at night, generally. What you don't want is a bright green light on the clocks causing an unnecessary distraction in the dark. At first I thought it was a little arse about face, but after 5 minutes or so I got my head round the concept fine. Nice video, once again. Stunning looking bike, nearly as good looking as my Speedy!

I believe the headlights should come on automatically. As the rider you should only have the option of high/low - in the name of safety and visibility. Paul Kinsella - I’d agree with you, a green light at night would be distracting. I don’t have one of these bikes myself, but I think it would be very cool if the DTRL was only visible when the ignition was turned on, and as soon as the engine cranks the DTRL stayed on with your choice of high/low headlights as standard…no need for a green warming light at all 😊

The US model of the T120 doesn’t have “daytime running lights” or a DRL switch . When you turn on the bike the headlight is in normal mode and there a switch to turn on/off the hi-beam. The bike is bigger than the speed twin ( has a different frame ) so it is going to be heavier. Compared to my Ninja 650, I don’t notice and significant weight difference. My 650 has gotten little use since I bought the T120.

I had a T120 for a couple of years, modified it a bit and loved it. It one of those few vehicles, in my opinion, that makes you feel a certain way when you ride/drive it, by which I mean the original Mini, VW bus, Beetle. It almost like a time machine that takes you to a better time and place. I think my jet lag is kicking in! 🤪

I've owned my 2017 Thruxton 1200 since new and I love it. I too thought that the dip beam light on the dashboard was a bit odd but as others have said it makes sense at night. It's simply a feelgood machine and fixes most of the things about my previous 865cc Thruxton that I wanted to change.

I bought a new T120 two years ago and I've put 3800 around-town miles on it. I have to agree it is expensive but that's OK. I've never felt the bike was too heavy while moving it around the garage. By far my favorite characteristic is the way the engine makes power! Gobs of low-end grunt and great sounds! I also enjoy the appearance of the bike. Just today a woman shouted at me as I left the parking lot, "what sort of bike is that? It looks awesome!"

The T120 is the best looking Triumph Classics of them all. And by far the most comfortable. As a 50+ man this bike really is the best alternative. After riding both the Thruxton and the Bonnie I really must say that the Bonnie is a pure delight and the Thruxton a torturing device. ; )

Good review Andy. I find the T120 a great companion and a charming bike to ride. It has plenty of power for the market it is aimed at. Those who want more from a Triumph can buy one of the triples. I tested the T120 back-to-back with a Z900RS and the Triumph - for me - had the character at "real world" speeds that the Kawasaki lacks. I will now make another unfair comparison. Given the choice between a new Interceptor and a 2 year old, showroom condition T120 with 2,500 on the clock for under £8K, I did not hesitate for a moment.

Thanks for an up front honest personal review of the 2021 T120. I nearly did buy a T100 3 years ago when I followed yr RE650 reviews that then convinced me to buy new and a smaller bike. The T120 has bags of Torque and character, but yes is heavy and priced into a spec price band - vs Speed Twin, Bobber, Speed Triple, Trident 660, etc...

Good to see another Triumph review and some interesting points here. On the subject of the DRL's, the headlight button on my 1200 scrambler has a mid position on the switch, which just leaves the DRL's on as the default setting when you turn the ignition on and then you can click the switch either way for high or dipped beam... Are the T120's controls different? Cost-wise, the comparison with the RE Interceptor is a bit unfair, because it substantially undercuts virtually an anything on the market. It's also, apart from being a retro twin, a completely different beast in terms of capacity, performance, build quality etc. A fairer comparison would be with something like the BMW NineT, which even in its most basic, low spec form (the Pure) is more expensive than the T120, with much lower equipment levels.

Another great video…….got a point to raise though. You say your second dislike is the price of the bike and question weather it is worth the 10k pounds. But then your second best like is the fit and finish of the bike and all the extra little trinkets that come on it. Well, it’s the fit and finish of the Triumph and all those little trinkets that add up to the 10k pounds. Just my two cents. Love your videos. Keep it up. 👍👍👍

I just picked up a left over 2020 3 months ago here in Canada. Put a detachable shield on it as well as the Triumph cruise, backrest and rack. Already have over 5,000 km on it and have done over 900 km in a day. Great little bike. Over here we don't have the switch for DRL, the DRL and headlight are on at all times.

Owning a Goldwing, and a Harley, and a T120, the Bonneville is like riding a bicycle compared to the others, so I guess weight is what your used to. Of the three I like the T120 best. All of my bikes are good for what they are designed for but I find pure joy in the Triumph. My biggest complaint about it is no self canceling turn signals. This can really be a safety issue considering the gauge cluster is hard to see in bright sunlight. I also don’t like the tubed tires, no way for me to fix a flat on the road. I’ve already been stranded twice as a results. There are better ways to do spoked wheels and I don’t suppose it would cost triumph extra to do them that way. The stock Pirelli’s are not good but that is a temporary problem.

I have had my (2016) T120 for the past 6 months. I would concur about the weight (try getting it onto the centre stand !!). But once on the go, its superb. Very stable and the grunt is in the right area. One thing you have not commented on is the iffy low speed running, which many owners experience. I have (like many) fitted a power plug, which improves matters, but at low revs it still has patches of 'hunting' and surging. Other than that, its one of the best bikes I (at the grand age of 68) have the pleasure of owning.

Great video yet again, I have just bought myself a t120 and I love it. That engine is something to behold, it just feels great. I do understand the back and forth between the Interceptor and the T120 in regard to which to buy as I've just been through it myself. Finally it was my wife (she's a keeper, coming up 32 years now) who said to me not to let price be a factor and go with the bike that made me grin the most. I did and am very happy, the Interceptor is a fantastic bike though and I get why it's so popular. I do love that bonne engine and the looks of the bike. Ride what makes you grin.

First of all, I do not own a Triumph, but if I did it would be the Bonneville T120 Gold Line. Yes, even MORE expensive, but the good looks has got me in a spell. I love the peashooter silencers of a Bonneville and the proper rear mud guard. The Gold Like paint scheme with the British Racing greeen and the silver on the side of the fuel tank and both mud guards are painted to match the side of the tank. I'd buy one today if I could. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

Great vid Andy. And having test ridden the T120 when it first came out I'd agree. As you know, Kels and I plumped for a new T100 in July this year and we love it. It's literally 3/4 of the T120 in every sense and for us is perfect. I don't miss the 6th gear of the bigger bike as I feel that up to 75mph the little brother is still only pulling 4000 rpm and sits quite happily at that engine speed. For the kind of bike they are, that's perfectly adequate. It's more nimble too - not having the weight and gyroscopic effect of twin front discs. Please revisit the T100 when you can, I'm sure the upgrades will address most of the factors you found issue with when you last rode one. I'd love to hear your updated view?

Hi. Loving the reviews! I have a Triumph Speedmaster and have to say I agree with Triumph regarding the running lights. The running lights are extra, extra bright and would dazzle other motorists if used at night. So the warning light is to remind you to turn on your dipped headlights at night if you forget. If there's was no warning light as you suggest, then we would all be merrily riding round at night with our running lights on and wondering why other drivers are giving you unusual hand signals!

Entertaining as well as very (& candidly) informative as you always are. Great review & I think your comments and insights are as usual, spot on. Just a few of many reasons why I keep on watching. With some financial reluctance, I plan on buying my very first Triumph - a 2022 Bonneville T120 Black, which will be my first new bike in over 30 years, (the same timeframe within which I have miserably existed "bike less"), with a second purchase of a middle weight adventure bike, either a Triumph Tiger 850, a Honda Africa Twin or a BMW 850 GS, planned for the coming year & a bit. The "winner" of these last 3 to accommodate my long desire to do some long overdue touring and adventure travelling. Decision to go with the Bonneville as the first bike of the two categories if you will, based mostly on the simple fact that I think I would be more comfortable on it and ride it much more often than the latter. Guess time will tell.

Purely because of your original T120 revue I purchased one. I’m a “return to motorcycling” (35 year hiatus) retired old git and this bike ticks all the boxes. It’s bloody brilliant! I’m also very happy with the model I have (2019) which by comparison to the 2022 model gives me a centre-stand, chrome wheels (I love shiny things), a rear grab rail and a better paint scheme at the cost of a few engine upgrades and cruise control. The bike I have now is a bit better than when I first got it. I have replaced the original Pirelli Phantom tyres with Avon Spirit ST’s - what an improvement! Also the bike has been de-cat’ed and a TEC X-pipe installed in its place. The engine now feels more eager, especially low down and has a slightly better exhaust note; nothing anti-social just a bit of a rasp. I have no plans to swap this bike in the near future but if I did it would be for something like the Kawasaki Z900 RS. I agree with your opinion on every point except for the DRL indicator. You always have a light on by default making you more visible. As Paul Kinsella said in a previous comment, what you don’t want is an unnecessary light shining in your face at night; let’s face it, it’s a bit obvious if it’s not on in the dark and who cares during the day? That was still a great TMF review though.

I do love the looks of the Triumph T-120, but I prefer the riding position of the Triumph Speed-Master. Yes, I know it has the same engine and all, but for an old Geezer like me, I prefer feet forward and I also like the idea of 12 inch ape handlebars. With a nice sissy bar on the back to strap my gear to, I could travel all over the country the way I did in the late 60s and early 70s on my Honda 350 two cylinder.

Love this review, i agree about the light thing. The weight is not an issue to me or for me. The value, well I do believe it is worth the money, I just think that the enfield is exceptional value for money and therefore gives the illusion of T120 being a bit pricey. I love my T120 and see the Enfield as a possible affordable addition to the stable but not a replacement. Love the channel.

It's no fun trying to move a heavy bike around with a bad shoulder (3:14), I've got the same problem and more! At the moment, I've got a Yamaha Tenere 700 fitted with an OEM rear rack, a centre stand, with bars and lights. It all makes for a heavy bike, plus it's a tall bike with large, heavy wheels. I've used a Honda CB650R quite a bit and found that quite easy to move about, it weighed 204kgs wet, but had a low centre of gravity. I love my Tenere, but next year I'm looking at changing it for a 2022 Yamaha MT-09 SP with a smaller, lighter rear rack and a screen. It should weigh in at just over 190kgs wet; I'll also be back on 17" wheels, it will be a lot faster, and has a peach of a triple engine, can wait. 🏍 👍

Nice video! I just purchased a 2017 T120 Black (Matte Gray/ Brown Seat) a bit over a month ago, so I'm still learning its nuances. So far it's been wonderful as an all around bike. I've been riding bikes since the 1970's and always loved the original Bonnevilles, and this modern version has already stolen my heart. It's one of those bikes that after I park it, I always look back as I walk away just to get another look at her... The only thing that I'm not in love with is the throttle response feels a bit delayed from a dead start. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but not sure if this is a typical drive by wire trait, or just an issue with my own bike... Cheers from Wilmington, NC, USA!!

Agree with you on the Running lights, but it's a different format for the States. You can't compare the T-120 to a Royal Enfield; they are crap. Totally agree it's too heavy, but they did reduce the weight on the 2022 models. The thing I hated the most was the gearing. I had to add two teeth on the rear in order to make it rideable. Also recommend a de-cat and booster plug to get rid of the jerky throttle.

Hi TMF and thanks for the great vid - rode an identical specimen for a whole day while my Scrambler XE was being serviced and totally agree. Just a thought: there now is a 2021 version of the T120, with claimed improvements in weight through lighter wheels (off the existing Thruxton) and a "lighter" and more "responsive" engine, by way of using internals off the (existing) Scrambler... So basically, you now owe (please) your fanbase a back-to-back comparison! Oh, in case you get to talk to the head honchos at Triumph, please let them know that us motorcycling crowd aren´t stupid - I am well aware of the strategy of "incremental" improvements to keep a product line fresh, but in the case of the T120 (and the T100), Triumph are taking the mickey (imho)! For instance, why doesn´t the new 2021 T100 get the same wheels as the new T120? What about floating discs, why does the Speed Twin (and T100) have them and yet the T120 still comes equipped with the old (and heavy) ones? I mean... New wheels to "save" weight, but yes, let´s keep the old´n chunky brake rotors... And I could go on and on - just one more, the Scrambler´s frame is part-steel part-aluminium (not the rear swingarm, I mean the aluminium cradle section), why not the T120 (or the T100 for that matter)? When are we going to get these "improvements"? Maybe in 2030, in pipette-dosed "increments"? Are Triumph trying to contain the costs (arguably not) or are they really taking (unfair) advantage of the fact that, as market leaders in this sector, their motorcycles will sell anyway? OK, apologies for the winge - I just think, at the end of the day, that we are missing out on what could really be a superb "classic" motorcycle. The lighter parts are all there, lying around in the workshop! Come on people at Hinckley, get your act together. And give us more credit, we can see what´s going on.
