Skill Building Books: www.modernmartialartist.com/technique-books-by-tmma-david-christian/ So I didn't go deep into it in the video, but the way Bernardo checked was to usually lift his heel to his butt rather than raise his knee up. This is used by a lot of the kickboxers/mixed martial artists that manage to stay lead leg heavy. It's faster and lets them keep their weight forward, but it does make the step down really heavy. But like Bernardo did, this can be used as a counter. This style isn't normally taught so it's usually something that smart fighters think of on their own. However with the rise of sidekicks to the knee/oblique kicks/calf kicks it's becoming more and more common in MMA.

Excellent breakdown! Aerts' execution of the game plan was superb. With that said, Bernardo is a freak. That left hook at 5:23, coming from such an awkward position, off-balance, and he still made it look technical. As a heavyweight. My jaw just dropped when I saw that one.

So, once again like Ali vs Foreman he learned what to do and what not to do. But the most important thing was his willingness to let go of his ego, past training and that which had served him in the past. The mark of a true warrior is to know that your most challenging opponent is you.
