For your berries; I would encourage you to check out the first berry planting video @ Cog Hill Farm. He followed what his favorite nursery (Petals from the Past) did because they have a pick your own. It is not only beautiful, but yields tremendous yields of fruit and is easy access (no poking!)

As someone already mentioned, that red thing growing in your yard is a stinkhorn mushroom-they can emit a foul odor to attract flies and other insects to carry away their spores. Yuk! I've been cutting my raspberries down really short (like to a couple of inches) and I've been getting a bigger and sweeter crop later in the year. I'm sure it depends on the type of raspberry but it would refresh your berry patch.

Rhubarb is like gooseberries .... tastes wonderful when prepared correctly strawberry rhubarb pie, rhubarb pie, jelly, sauce ...yum.

I really miss the gooseberry plants that we left growing on the land we sold after our parents passed away. My father had removed them from the land he grew up on in Kansas and transplanted them to our farm in Michigan when I was a child. We also had rhubarb on that farm with a Hickory nut tree. And more rows of raspberry and strawberry plants than I could count. My father and all of the family enjoyed a gooseberry pie every year several times through the years. As well as strawberry rhubarb pies we all learned how to bake and take to 4-H fairs to have judged yearly.

Absolutely, put in a row of fruit trees but also berry shrubs. If you had a few rows of blueberries, you could sell the fruit to the neighbours after ensuring plenty for your own needs. 🎉

Trim the two year canes in the winter when the leaves are down - easier to see what needs to go. Then in the early spring prune the one year old canes to 4-5 feet in length to produce more berries in the summer. If you want, I have Triple Crown and Qachita blackberry plants I can gift you. Both are thornless.

You could always look at the burn process as a way to create some biochar for your garden - put a positive spin on the need to burn?

Rhubarb is excellent and I believe easily moved. A prolific plant that I found for jam and Rhubarb pie Grandma used to make.

Thor less blackberries are an excellent option. Prolific, large berries. Make wonderful jam and jelly, good on yogurt, cobbler. Yum. Rhubarb makes excellent muffins, in addition to pie and jam. A Country Life makes a rhubarb slushy that sounds refreshing and delicious.

Rhubarb crumble is one of my go to puddings (desert) and is so easy to make but its best served with vanilla custard. Its a must in the UK. Loads of ways to cook it but the best way is to keep it simple with just the rhubarb and sugar for the base and the crumble is flour, butter and brown sugar. The custard is simple just heat 600ml double cream until steaming but not boiling. Meanwhile, mix together 6 egg yolks, 4 tbsp caster sugar, 2 tsp cornflour and ½ tsp vanilla extract in a bowl. Pour the cream onto the eggs, stirring continuously as you pour. Pour the whole lot back into the saucepan the cream came from and place over a medium heat. Stir until it thickens, about 10 mins, if it goes a bit lumpy (due to not stirring enough just pass through a sieve and enjoy.The custard is also nice with apple pie and the like. Thanks for posting

I think you’ll find those red tubular objects growing in your berry patch are mushrooms. Possibly witches eggs or red stinkhorns. Do some research but I’ve found mushrooms growing to be a good way that nature detoxes soil.

Get yourself a mulberry tree or two for snacking and a few thorn-less blackberry bushes . Both can be propagated very easily. A couple of fruit trees that produce at different times so you never run out might be a good addition too.

What kind of soil does your area have? Berries need a slightly acidic soil.

Good question! It's very acidic; we have lots of wild strawberries that grow in the pasture because of the soil composition.

We had one, well several of my friends had them as well, and we used to climb the tree (they were that big) and sit (inside) the tree and eat mulberries until our faces and shirts were stained.

Seriously think you should rent a herd of goats to get through the brush on your farm, they will clear the undergrowth, you clear the trees and you have arable land with half the effort. And goat meat is pretty darn good.

🇦🇺There’s apps that you can download to find out what the plant is, it will tell you if it’s edible or toxic to humans and animals. Driving 40 minutes is subjective. When my kids were small we would drive 3 hours for coffee and ice cream. 4 kids under 6. Now I drive 70 minutes to Church. Do you have a wood chipper as you could make great compost.
