Just a suggestion: In the area where you have "the nuclear waste", all you have to do is bring tree trunks that fell in your wooded are, surround "the nuclear waste" and fill it with layers of leaves. Water it, layer it with some more dirt, grass clippings and repeat the process until you create new and clean growing soil on top of it. It will be black gold soil. You can still plant your sunflowers to pull the toxins out.

I had a skunk camping out underneath my front steps, and I used mothballs to get rid of him. I’ve also heard that they don’t like loud sounds, so what I did was play a radio really loudly during the day to upset them into moving.

Re: predators Do yall have yard dogs? Edit....daytime skunk. Possibly rabid. Changes in "normal" behavior is indicative Pepper as skunk deterrent.... "Cool Hand Luke" ('60s Paul Newman movie). Luke used black pepper to throw bloodhounds off his trail while escaping prison farm. Note: only useful on Southern skunks. "Do we have a problem here, boy?"

An odd farm/construction tool I've found useful is a "magnetic broom". A very strong magnet on wheels that has a way of cleaning itself off. You find these at most hardware/animal stores.

Chilli peppers are a good tip and worth while trying. Unfortunately, trial and error is a painful way of learning and expensive, raising production costs that may take a season or two to rectify, depending on the type of mistake. That's why accumulative knowledge is so important to a farmer or, as it seems today to be the case, doing a course at an agricultural institute to get good basic knowledge. You can take soil samples and have them tested. If you have contaminates in the soil, it will be affecting your ground water so it is well worth your while, even if it is expensive, to find out " if and what " you are dealing with. Ever considered Bio-char as an additive?

Thanks for the tip on the sunflowers. We plant different varieties in our garden for the animals in the winter. Though I buy the sunflower seed for the birds and squirrels never dawned on me we could plan some of them too. Have a good week.

Oh.... and you could turn the sunflowers into biochar - that should burn off any contaminants and then you can compost it.

Depends on what the contaminants are. Lead, for example, will not burn off. Some contaminants are made more hazardous by burning them - it can make them airborne.

I so wish you would reconsider a farm dog. You just can't beat a good dog around the place. They mark territory, they bark, and in some cases will swing into protection mode in the presence of predators. With a young child, I would strongly recommend a puppy to grow up with Henry - you won't be sorry.

I agree a dog would help. Not an indoor dog but a dog that lives with your livestock. Speak to other homesteaders for their opinion.

It's odd - all my experience with skunks is that they're quite docile. I have a lot of them by me w/ a fully enclosed chicken run, and they've been sniffing at the ground on the other side of the run 2 feet away from the chickens, digging a bit and looking for grubs and that sort of thing - and they never seem remotely interested in either me or the birds. I don't think it was a weasel or mink or something in that family - they're known for just ravaging an entire flock in one outing, not just one bird. I unfortunately did deal with a mink (I was awakened at night and ran outside and saw the mink so I know for sure that's what it was) - and I can confirm I lost my entire flock that night. This isn't based on anything (you would certainly know better), but my gut tells me this isn't a skunk, but rather a nasty raccoon.

It seems like the nest box wall of your coop is too close ton the barn wall. Didn't you have an issue with a skunk coming through the barn wall a while back? If I'm not mistaken they could get around your defenses even at night through the barn.

I learnt something today. I did not know that skunks will eat chooks. If you find it in there, are allowed to clobber it and chuck it away or are they a protected species?

Hey Yeoman Sean. OHH Cayenne Pepper Chicken, sounds tasty !!! It is 7:23 pm Wednesday in Montreal and it is almost 90 degrees outside. We had temps in the very high 80's into the 90's OVERNIGHT !! Sweltering All Night Long. We have serious heat warnings up, now for a couple of days, through all of this week. I buy those Ornamental Sunflower packets here, and I walk around the neighborhood, and I drop seeds here and there, and I wait to see them come up. I had some real success with some Massive Sunflowers in the past. We gotta keep the girls and Lenny safe !!

Just a thought after hearing you talk about using sunflowers to remove toxins...if that is truly the plan you are following you should research before you burn or compost. Part of the reclaimation process is to actually remove that material from your property completely. If you compost or burn it you are only relocating any toxins you removed to where ever you put that compost...and worse, you may actually concentrate it even more. The plants might take up a toxin but it doesn't change the molecular makeup of the toxin...it's just stored in the cells of the plant. You also have to know what you are actually trying to remove from the land because plants don't take up every type of toxin. Some plants are good at taking up some things and other plants are good at taking up other things.

Since I don't have a roo I keep a pen to separate my broody hens. Set it up on blocks for good airflow with food and water inside and in the shade. They'll eat and drink and saves me from going out several times a day to take them off the nest in hopes they'll eat and drink! I let them out early evening to run around before going to roost in a nest only to repeat till I break their broody😂 Just a thought to keep them safe from a predator!
