Sean, please do not cut the barn board and try to add horizontal boards to it... you will cause faster rot that way because the water will run down the vertical barn boards only to get stopped and sit in the crutch of the horizontal boards you are suggesting. If you have a bunch of sheet metal, t he best place for that would be at the bottom of those barn boards placed vertically. If you install the metal siding on the outside you will cut draft as well as protect the integrity of the original barn board siding. I have also used cheap house wrap from Lowes on the inside to keep draft down too. Works great.

Installing the sheet metal to the base of the brooder area, but leaving the area above it not so protected from the elements was a great idea, which allows for air circulation without the drafts. King Leo is a handsome Tom. I can tell the dirty A frame really bugs you, and you will be so happy after you get it cleaned. I'm sure you count your blessings to have your parents and MIL live nearby. They help out a lot (plus, they have access to their grand baby!)

Have you ever watched Just a Few Acres Farm? They grow turkeys on. They have a turkey-mobile. You would have to search back because i think their last turkeys went before Thanksgiving.

You got a lot accomplished on this" Work With Me Wednesday", Sean. King Lenny is really beautiful when he is all puffed up and strutting his stuff. I'll bet Queen Laverne thinks she really scored the best of the best. Maybe you could put a 4 x 4 post in the corner to block it off. Baby chicks might try to get into that spot and get cut up on the edges or get trapped behind it. Thanks also for bringing back this Wednesday Video, I love it. Have a Blessed day.

You need ear protection when using the saw. Know many contractors who have lost their hearing from using loud tools. When building the brooder protect it from rodents. You should look at Jason Rhodes brooder.

King Lenny is SO handsome! You got a lot done in today's video! I hope your chickens and turkeys love their new roosting bars!
@sherriepetty84974 ай бұрын
You need a higher roost. Put a 2x4, flat at the same height as your chicken tractor. You can reduce brumble foot by using 4” wide boards and not round logs.
@mariesheppard37504 ай бұрын
I keep telling him the roost is to low, Yes need s a 2 by 4 for sure, He needs to take a picture at night when they roost,

Stuff cardboard against wood outside and down inside sheer metal the insulate with whatever you have pink stuff or foam.
@pennywillis88954 ай бұрын
🇦🇺From the original perching 2x4, I would have gone to the roof not to the ground. The chickens want to be higher not lower. They want to roost on the turkey A frame, so make it at that hight.
@heatherkennedy99734 ай бұрын
you could also line the whold brooder with hardware cloth like justin roades did so nothing can grt in just a thought!!

you could use flashing in the corners I love that yall have an old barn to fix up. My property had nothing on it except an old doublewide, not even scraps of rebar or old piles of anything, except trash in the woods, which Ive been cleaning up.

The perches have for the chickens and turkeys aren't very high off the ground. Have you thought of suspending a cedar log from the ceiling of the lean-to so that they can use your ladder and then if they want to get up higher off the ground there is the suspended perch for them to get onto? How are you going to stop rats getting into your brooder in the barn and eating your chicks?

If you want to increase the life of wood I have found the on toxic way. Mix 50, 50 linseed oil and methyl hydrate. in a pump spray shake well and spray evenly all sides. It works best on dry seasoned wood. It made the pressure treated lumber turn black.

Just install a treated board at the bottom horizontal. If you got board in loft cut them wide enough to place vertical over gaps

Nice busy day. Just a thought, the left over roofing from the brooder might be able to add them to the roof line of the chicken house and no wire for the chicken to hang on to. That gap in the brooder may be a piece of roofing will fill in and match up.

Chickens don't like to roost on round perches. A 2x4 on its side (4 in. Up) is much better. They can have their feet flat and in winter it helps them stay warmer.
@dawndrake58334 ай бұрын
Thanks, I didn’t know.
@lemoniaeleftheriadou34644 ай бұрын
2 in. is way too narrow to perch on. Chicken feet adapted to walk on the ground but they have feet for perching. At the same time they need wider surface than 2 inches.
@HappyInNature4 ай бұрын
@lemoniaeleftheriadou3464 yes that is why I stated 4 inch side up for them to perch on
@Autumnswirl714 ай бұрын
With the width of the larger cedar branch he used they should be fine. Its gripping the small things they dont do well. Mine will roost in a tree, on a larger branch, and be fine. but they avoid the smaller branches for sure.

Sean do you have a grinder? That would be a very easy way to cut that metal. You can pick one up for less than 20 to 25 dollars at Harbor Freight. Just make sure that you get the metal cutting blades with it. They come in pretty handy on a homestead.

So not rehab on going. Each stall and roofs with opening windows for air conditioning in summers. Yes, sheet metal, but watch the sharp sides. Yes, horizontal lines. But the 4 x4 s need, metal around bottoms, burial flashings for snakes and rats. Donut make birds to high up.

Chicken perches should be at least 3 inches wide and preferably 4 inches. Chickens do not wrap their legs around a perch as wild birds do. They actually prefer to sleep with their feet flat.
@zoeshorthouse79134 ай бұрын
I didn't know that. I'll keep that in mind when we build our coop.

Shawn think like a big plump chicken. How many steps would you need to get up on that roost ? And how hi do you want to be when every animal under gods blue heaven Wants to go to bed with a belly full of chicken.
