Sean and Holly I think one of your biggest achievements on your homestead so far are your garden beds… as city slickers moving out to the country, the amount of work you have put into the building, care, growing, producing, weeding and feeding your beds is amazing. I really don’t think a person can appreciate that until they’ve done it raised bed style. Your learning curve as farmers has grown leaps and bounds and it has been a pleasure to share that journey with you and your family.

You could also always raise one side of the roost closer to the ceiling and then you will have a "leaning" roost that's still hanging. Easier to work under it too.😊

Ok, so you’re not doing Cornish cross but American bresse…..good call. I just grew out my first batch. Some we processed and the remainder are our new permanent flock. Things I learned. 1) people are right, the meat really tastes good! The dark meat is crazy dark. Like almost black. 2) the dark meat was also really chewy. We let them grow to 20 weeks instead of 16 so we don’t know if it was because of the age or how much exercise they got. 3) the rooster we kept is really calm with us so far but really protective. Had a hawk trying to get at his gals a few days ago and he did all the right things. Next time we hatch chicks, we plan to process right at 16 weeks to see if the meat texture is better. Hope this helps

You are correct with your history. 🦃vs 🦅. Ben Franklin thought the US seal had an eagle on it that looked like a turkey. He wrote a letter to his daughter Sally about how eagles were lazy, but turkeys were honest and worked hard to keep themselves alive. Although he didn’t explicitly state that he preferred the turkey as the US representative bird, he had more affection for the humble turkey.

I love Wednesday workdays! Here's my comment about the roost. Open the outside door and make sure to walk through that stall several times a day, going around the perch, stepping over it and walking through the middle. See if it frustrates you to have to interrupt your movement to go around or over, and do it a bunch of times a day for a few days or a week. If it doesn't frustrate you by the end of that time period, then you're good! Personally, I'd be moving it over or putting up a leaning roost against the wall because I'd be annoyed that I couldn't just plow straight through, but I have less patience as I get older. Your beds are really taking shape - can't wait to see them full and lush this summer!

Hold on… does that commentor know, regarding the roosters, that baby chicks hatched out, in some places, don’t even get a chance at a life, because if they are roosters, they get instantly culled? Re the hanging roost, I think, carabiners on a chain would be very versatile, because when you first get your chicks, you can have it very low to the ground, and as they grow, you can raise it up higher for them. ALSO, when you need to get in there to do work, that same carabiners could possibly lever that whole structure onto a wall and secure it so you can tidy up the stall. Looks great so far! 👍🏻

OMG I had a vegan client on my personal fb. what a night maire she was not just with my posts but my friends posts as well. She finally got fed up and moved on. I may have started posting information about how an all vegan diet would destroy us, meaning human life. They are so caught up in trying to take down the meat industry they don't stop and look at how their food is grown and shipped all over. She gardens and knows darn well she can't grow an olive tree here in Northern Canada or black beans to make her veggie burgers. 🤦‍♀ I was just reading the other day that they are talking about adding animal fat to veggie burgers, veggie nuggets and vegan bacon. The companies making these products don't give a sh^t about vegans they just want to sell there product.

Suggestion: when you change out the rope for chains, also change out the rafter the eye bolts. Install heavy duty bolts with hook end. You will easily be able to take down the roost to clean around it and rehang. Easier than getting chicken poop off your pants. In the meantime with the rope, Install two levels of loops (by trying a knot in the established ropes) and use your carabiner. Another idea even easier. Attach 2 large eye bolts on one of the long sides of the roost about 3 feet apart. Install 2 heavy duty hooks or nails horizontally about 3 feet apart in the wall opposite the eye bolts. When you want to clean, lift the side with the eye bolts and hang the roost out of the way on the nails or hooks on the wall. Done cleaning. Unhook the roost from the wall. Easy peasy. One swift move. No fussing with Caribeaners and easy, full standing room to clean. I think I like this idea best. Enjoy.😊

You managed to solve the problem quite nicely. I just wanted to mention that some carabiners break rather easily. Hopefully yours are heavy duty. Blessings and love.

For me, it’s quite literally a work with me Wednesday. I’m always doing my own work at the same time that I’m watching and or listening to you. As far as the roost goes, if you decide you don’t like it the way it is now you could always move it all the way over to one side of the stall, and raise the ropes up so that it’s on an angle like a typical roost.

It will take more chain, but if you cross the chain from one side to the other, it will decrease the swing of the roost. In regards to your roosters, as Jess from Roots and Refuge once said, something has to die so we can live. Cedar saplings will last longer than the sweet gum for your herb garden. Great video.

I love the roost. Ive seen them before and from what I read they also provide entertainment for the chicken's. I think they'll love it. I read the same thing about Ben Franklin and the turkey being the national bird instead of the bald eagle.. Your outlook on homesteading is a beautiful way to be. We have about 2 acres, and even though its not a farm or a huge spread of land.We do alot of growing. One of neighbors about a mile down, got rid of their entire front yard to garden and raise chicken's. ( due to sun) .I always love seeing people trying to accomplish what they want.

Well since you asked for opinions, lol... In my experience, our broilers did not roost on anything... they just plopped on the ground and called it a day. Our hens on the other hand are very handy at getting up super high on anything and everything including a swinging roost bar. So for your hens, I think this roost system is awesome, but I would be surprised if the meat birds used it. I will be watching to see how they feel about it haha :)

Living in Florida, I know a little about unwanted Bermuda grass... spread by seed to my yard from a nearby golf course. I have been told that it is hard to kill because it is drought tolerant... roots can go down 20 inches. I just watched a homesteader remove seedling weeds from his raised beds with a flame... whatever the propane tank/flame end is called. I'm just wondering if fire will kill the Bermuda grass? Just a thought. Maybe other subscribers would know? I tried Roundup, and gave up.

I think the roost looks fine. As the birds get older, you could raise it. Or raise one side giving them a higher roost, similar to leaning it against the wall. My mama always told me that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. It seems that not all kids grow up being told that or even having that as an example.

I like the idea. My biggest concern is the blocks along the edge with the holes in the center. It would be too easy to twist or sprain an ankle. Could you secure a board over the top? If the roost is too large, you could consider 2 layers, but might need a "ladder" to get them up higher.

Slugs were a big problem so I would toss them up on the gravel path that was around my bed and my girls would stomp them. I would have preferred to feed them to ducks but I didn’t have that option. Another lady at the garden saw the girls stomping them and she tells me that I was teaching my girls to murder. I just wondered how she navigated her way through life. Did she keep roaches out of her house? If so, how? Out of consideration to her, I had the girls bring the slugs to the compost pile, but I was not burdened by her point of view.

It still amazes me that there are people who have no concept of real life! Your “rude commenter” must think that all animals are pets! It is right on par with those that think the government should just “give” us everything we need to survive and not have to work for our food! Oh how they are missing out on the best part of life! You might consider leaning your roosting rack against the wall, when not needed it could hang on the wall out of the way. GOD bless you and your endeavors!!

If I were a hammer, I would need a nail. But the question is, "What kind of hammer would you be??" (I was a wood shop nerd in school) Remember what Katherine Hepburn said about being a tree ?? She once said that if she were a tree she'd be an OAK Tree. When I was a kid we grew an Oak Tree beside my bedroom window outside, and it grew about 50 feet in 20 years, and about 2 feet in diameter at the base. It took one tornado to yank it out of the ground, roots and all, and drop it on the house next door, during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It was a beautiful Silver Oak Tree.

First, I very much like the roost you built, and it makes sense to use the rope you have versus the chain you don't yet have (enough of) to try out the design and functionality. Second, anyone who has never hatched out a clutch of eggs and has an opinion on how you handle the inevitable roosters really isn't educated enough to offer an opinion. Would it be great if every chick we hatched had a long, happy life? Well, of course! However, since it is likely to have about half of any clutch hatch as roosters, decisions must be made. These decisions truly depend on circumstances of the one raising the chicks. I incubated my fist (and so far only) clutch of eggs last year and out of 7 chicks, three grew up to be roosters. I did my best to find alternate homes for those boys, but after several attempts backed out or fizzled one way or another AND they began fighting bloody battles with each other, we felt our only choice was to harvest them. That was a HARD decision for us and not our first choice. These were not "meat birds" and we had treated them almost as pets when they were small, because we wanted whomever got them as flock guardians to be able to approach them without fear of being attacked as many roosters are known for doing. So now, instead of the original plan, we had to pivot and we have meat we raised - the first meat we ever raised - in our freezer. I think your videos are very enlightening and I enjoy how much you explain your thought process. Thank you!
