I've got to tell you the easiest way to determine a hen from a rooster. Pull out their wing. If they are all even, its a hen. If the 3-4th feather is indented closest to the body its a rooster. A chicken farmer taught us that. I'm tqlking thousands of chickens. Good luck ❤❤love your channel

Sean you only need 1 rooster for 10 hens even for breeding. IF you have more roosters than you have hens (10 to 1) they will fight and wear your hens out. It can be a real problem. Talk to your breeder and see what she recommends. If you choose to have breeding pairs or trios they will each need their own coops.

One of the most important skills to develop is the fine art of leaving things UNdone. What can you not do and still have things proceed acceptably. I was a teacher and, like in farming, there is always something more that could be done that would produce benefit; don't let your pursuit of excellence prevent you from enjoying the good.

When planting squash you need to plant a trap crop. Blue Hubbard squash is a trap plant for squash bugs. The squash bugs love it so much they will go to it. Plant it away from the other squash.

Holly, nasturtium helps repel squash bugs if you want to try companion planting, also if you dip a toothpick in water you can use it to pick up and plant those tiny seeds.

I never do things perfect. I just do it the best I have time for and it works or it dose not. Henry is a riot and such a happy little boy. If you have a small basket of some type you can put it in the garden shed so it can hold the tools that you take to the garden. I put and old mailbox up near the garden and threw mine in for convenience. The hornets found it so I moved out. Nice video.

Ahhhh Spring! When the list is long and the day is never quite long enough! The garden shed works and that is the operative term to lean on. Use it until it does not work, or you have an opportunity to do something better. Perhaps if you grow enough starts you can barter them for something you want or need. or simply sell them to others!

Love the experiment! Last year was my first year growing my own slips- I just stuck a oldish sweet potato half in a pan of dirt and kept it moist. took about a month for it to start growing tiny little slips. By the time it was sweet potato planting day here in zone 6a I has a ton of slips with their own roots. This year Im just going to do the same thing, though I think I probly needed to get them going a few weeks ago.

Maybe instead of doing summer vegetables, y’all can plant some fruit trees at least like one or two if you don’t already have but if you plant now by the time you’re your toddlers before 10 you’ll have some fruit some some some do and fruit and I think I heard that tractor supplyhad some fruit trees at a really good price

Grow your squash and zucchini vertically and wrap the base of the stem in foil. You can also tent bug netting over them until both male and female flowers bloom. You can also hand pollinate with the netting instead of removing it. Planting Blue Hubbard far away from the other squash will reduce them a lot because they prefer the Blue Hubbard.
@TheModernYeoman10 ай бұрын
I've heard good things about the Blue Hubbard "sacrifice plant" method. Thanks!

Good luck with the sweet potatoes. I have some very shriveled russet potatoes with lots of eyes....I am going to plant them this week end. Prayers going up for your sweet potatoes and my russets. Your so right about plant starts costing an arm and a leg, Holly. We bought two large tomato plants last year for $14.00 ea. It put out a total of 6 tomatoes, 3 of which the squirrels chewed on and 3 we ate. I could have purchased a lot of tomatoes for that $28.00 investment. Totally not a gardener. Y'all have a Blessed day and at the age little Henry is right now, just take what ever short cuts you can and it will be "homestead good".

Try squash pumpkins the first of July when bug pressure are less. Also zucchini has been bad for bugs here in se VA but not yellow summer squash. You may not have as much time in TN to start in July however. Are you using good seed starting.mix? It looks awfully full of chunky sticks.etc may affect germination. Growers Solution has great.mix but kind of late now. Good luck. Ive used Jiffy but this year seems to be lower qquality. You might want to try Danny and Wanda method from Deep South Homestead. Shallow soil of a couple of inches then nestle them on top. Works well for them.

so as an old man I look at things with different eyes than a younger man. When I see your shed with the tools hanging up, I see lots of spikes pointing towards you. God forbid that you trip on the dirt floor as, when you raise your hands to protect yourself you will find all sorts of spikes ready to lance your hands. Please Shawn ALLWAYS place anything with spikes or sharps away form you. I have also made this mistake in the past and it heart, just passing the lesson I learnt on to you the painless way..
