Road is always quiet, always drive exact same speed with cruise control every day. I always had 6.7 L/100km for my milage. That was with the Top of the line Synthetic Mobile 1. One time I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Synthetic. Instantly I went down to 6.2 - 6.1 L/100km. remained at that range consistently after switching. My understanding is when the calcium detergent is lower, it increase the effectiveness of molybdenum and zddp which improve wear protection and lower friction at the same time since less competition for metal surface from calcium deterrent. Got my first oil change in on my new Ecoboost 2.0L, just under 1,500 miles. Oddly, Ultra wasn't readily available from our vendors, it just disappeared from their order pages in the past week or so, but Platinum will do the trick. The biggest thing people need to understand is that it's important to change your oil! Don't solely rely upon manufacturers recommendations, nor upon oil life monitors; know your operating conditions, know the environment you operate in and it's demands upon maintenance too. My oil life monitor would have had me going over 10k. I'd never advocate that for anyone outside of fleet vehicle constantly traveling and not under extreme conditions/loads. I've worked in dealerships a good part of my life, I've seen what extended intervals can do, and certainly what being completely cheap when it comes to protecting your investment can do. It's always far better to spend an additional $100 a year on and oil change than having to spend upwards of $5000 for an engine replacement -- but try getting that across to some people.

Lookup The Car Care Nut on youtube and how to make Toyota last over 300k miles. Same basic maintenance goes for almost every car. Best oil is a full synthetic like Amsoil but I prefer the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum because of the cost. As long as you're changing every 5k/6 months you're fine. As for the transmission fluid, you got to look up your specific car but the mechanic recommends drain and fills only and I'd say drop the pan to clean and also change transmission filter. Mechanics just say go with the OEM transmission fluid, but I decided to go with Amsoil Signature. It is a 100% synthetic and can withstand colder/hotter temps. It also has extended maintenance schedule although I will be following the recommendation schedule either way. Extra protection never hurts. A transmission or engine costs way more than oil.

This was proof that PUP was doing something different. I've since switched to PUP on the newer ES exclusively. Only wish is that PUP was more readily available.

I just got some of the ultra platinum on sale on Amazon in 0w40 and put it in the Sentra today; my results were exactly the same as yours. I've never run cheap oil in any of my cars, even the Nissan gets group 4 or 5 oil. The car has never been quieter right off the bat until today, it's always been a particularly noisy four cylinder. I swear by the Mobil 1 FS 0w40 Euro for the Mercedes, but I just went back and ordered another pack of the Pennzoil for it as well just to see how it does with that motor.

I started out using Valvoline oil back in 1973. I first tried Mobil 1 in 1982 while living in the Denver, CO metro area. Switched to Penzoil 5w30 Euro L, in 2016 for my Ram Ecodiesel, but that got changed to Rotella T6 5w40. When I bought a 2020 Dodge Durango, I put Penzoil Platinum 0w20 for the first oil change. Then switched to Penzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 after that. I drive predominantly highway miles on speed control. I had one oil change that I could not get the Ultra Platinum. And I could feel a difference. Back in August of 2023 I bought a Jeep JLU Sport S Altitude. The Jeep will get the Ultra Platinum 0w40 with its second oil change too. Todays synthetics are impressive. My wife's 2018 Ram 2500 6.7L runs Rotella T6 5w40 all year round. And when the dealer mistakenly put 15w40 oil in instead of the 5w40 I requested. Even the tech noticed a change in the way the engine ran. Run Penzoil Ultra Platinum for gasoline engines, and Rottella T6 for diesel. For the best costs to benefits.

@@diegaspumper8501 I agree with you to a certain extent that it's also about trying to squeeze out that extra 1/2 mile to gallon of gas. Once I made the switch to PUP, the noise has gone, no matter how cold and all the way to my 5k change intervals. It also retains better oil pressure til the end of its 5k miles. I agree. The Signature Series used to be the only of those three oils which advertised being 100% synthetic on the bottle, which lead a lot of people to believe that it was a "real" group 4 PAO based synthetic while their OE and XL oils were made from group 3 base stocks. Now all three of those oils claim to be 100% synthetic, so it's unclear what changed, if anything. My guess is they probably just started marketing group 3 oils as "100% synthetic" instead of "full synthetic" like they used to, but I could be wrong.

In my life experience, my work had a high degree of travel, like 40K miles a year. 8 cylinder, 6 cylinder and 4 cylinder domestic cars, generally kept them over 4 years. I always started thinking about oil changes at about 3500 to 4000 miles, used whatever brand name dino oil and filter that the convenient oil change place sold. I never had a lubrication failure in anything, clear back to antiquated SE and SF rated oils. We have all these advances, yet valve gear and cam failure is at an all time high even in well maintained cars. Maybe the old zinc cam additives were a lot better than we gave credit.

I use the Pennzoil Platinum in my 2012 Mustang V-6, bought used in 2016 with low mileage. Take the guesswork out of the your oil's effectiveness. When I first got the car, i started on the Pennzoil. Then for the next couple oil changes, I had a sample sent to Blackstone. They were able to tell me the oil still had plenty of life left, and was low on contaminants. So I eventually stretched my change interval to 8000 miles. At that interval, oil was still good and low on contaminants. I elected to stop there, since I don't drive the car all that much, and 8000 miles takes me about a year. So I would want to change it then anyway just based on time. So what about the Ultra Platinum? Based on my experience and the measured results I received from Blackstone, I don't believe the extra cost and protection is warranted in my *particular* situation. Perhaps if I drove more or harder, the step-up might be justified. But that's my point: don't guess, measure and go from there.

Second oil change at 3500 with the same. Third oil change at 8,000 mi but switched to 5W40. I noticed through burn off and other direct injected engine abuse, I lost about a half a quart between 5,000 mi services. I switched to 0w40 Ultra Platinum at around 15,000 mi because I read it had a better burn-off rate and there was no 5W40 Ultra Platinum. The oil loss dropped to maybe a half a cup of oil between 5,000 mi services. The valve cover gasket was being replaced at 80,000 mi under warranty. I asked my service guy if I could go out and take a look at the top end while he had the valve cover off just to see if what I was doing was worthwhile. If I could post a picture here I would. The engine was immaculate. No varnish anywhere. No discoloration. It looked brand new. It was running beautifully at 100,000 miles when it was totaled thanks to a 12R24.5 truck tire lol.

If you're still monitoring this comment, I sincerely want to know, why did you choose a Hyundai over say, a used Camry or Honda Accord? What about this car did you like vs the Japanese cars and what was the deciding factor? And would you buy it again?
@ronnymb674 ай бұрын
@@robertmaybeth3434 I'm 6ft2, 205lbs, and have nerve damage in my legs and feet from cancer nearly taking me out. So legroom and seat comfort are paramount to me. Comfort is of course subjective, but the seats in neither the Camry or Accord in any trim level was comfortable enough for me. I bought a 2008 Sonata on a whim just because I needed a commuter car. It was used and already had 30,000 mi. That was October of 2008. By December of 2012, it had over 170,000 mi on it and it never broke. So I went with the 2015 based on the reliability of the 2008, without knowing about the Theta II engine issues before I bought it. Served me well for the 100,000 mi I drove it before a truck tire took it out. I'm at almost 3.5 years and 52K on the 21 N Line and it has been just as reliable...

Great show. Love it. I ordered my ultra Penzoil Platinum from USA to Australia for my Kia Rio DGI direct gasoline injection, straight into the chamber. My 1.6lt kio has done 150 thousand klm. Its been suffering at low rev's engine pinging- i have always been usiing 95% or 98% octane fuel. Best fuel i can buy. I have changed my oil every 5klm. I have unfortunately have more pinging with Shell fuel. My economy is little better nothing to brag about. I will keep you in touch with updates, because i put it into my neq Piaggio vespa Medley . Seems to love it.

Just buy Shell Helix Ultra from Repco/supercheap etc - it’s the same oil ;) Shell purchased the Pennzoil brand name years ago to sell Shell oils in the US.

Lake, after seeing the episode of Lubrication Explained you were in, I have some confusion on oxidation value as it related to DI engines. In that discussion, it was noted that a more robust additive package was not necessarily a good thing in all cases for DI engines. Might be a good subject for clarification... at least for me! Love these presentations!
@themotoroilgeek Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Hopefully this can clear things up. More “Robust” is code for a higher level of all additives, especially calcium based detergents. The high level of Calcium detergent (over 2,500 ppm) the problem for DI engines. It seems that 1,500 ppm or lower on Calcium, LSPI is not a problem, which is why both of these oils are good for DI engines.

@@themotoroilgeek Is it ONLY the calcium levels which adversely effect the GTDI engines, or do any of the other (boron, magnesium, manganese, titanium, etc.) detergents/dispersants also potentially cause harm? I use Ultra Platinum. In the tests I have seen, it ranks third, behind Amsoil Signature and Red Line. Since it's such a pain in the butt to purchase Amsoil, and Red Line is so expensive, Pennzoil it is.

Been using ultra since the original formula released around 10+ years ago. I would consider amsoil, but I don't want to spend over double than what I do with ultra. I try to buy the 5 quart jugs for under $30 from walmart or amazon. I used to use royal purple oil filters, recently switched to amsoil. RSX currently has 285,000 miles, s2000 has 135,000 miles.

I have pretty much exclusively used Valvoline in all my cars (5w30). Not sure how much of a difference there is between the Advanced, EP, and High Mileage versions, but everywhere I have seen including my own oil analysis sent off, it had more moly than any other oil. Would be interesting to see it compared as well.

High performance lubricants results uses better base oils, better addictives, and a lot more moly then valvoline. Oxidation value if I remember correctly is in the 60s. I've also seen plenty of uoas on the oil and it doesn't shear unlike these off the shelf oils
