Moondreamers definitely deserves the MLP g4 treatment. Give it some good animation, writers with a good resume and there you have it.
@SgtTwilight
@SgtTwilight 5 жыл бұрын
I think it probably be to expensive nowadays. Drawning new backgrounds for every dream might not sit well with some companies. The reason why MLP G4 has lasted so long IMO is its relatively cheap animation. New characters are introduced very rarely, and when they are, they're recurring and new locations are rarely visited. They don't have to create a lot of new assets per episode, which keeps it pretty cheap. It's also why the comics tend to be much more lenient with exploration of new places and new characters, because they're not bound by the same constraints.
@MrKlausbaudelaire
@MrKlausbaudelaire 5 жыл бұрын
@@SgtTwilight There are shows like Avatar and Voltron that had new backgrounds almost every episode, and I'm not saying THATS the artistic level this show would need. Plus, it can center around a more common location, a "hub", lets say this way, and expand in a more solid world to build things around. Similar to, well, MLP, centered around same locations but the episodes still manage to stay fresh and new with the plot and locations.

I actually wouldn't mind a reboot of that. With...less songs, or at the very least better songs. Seriously, if MLP and Transformers can get better after their initial runs, then I see hope for it! Lord knows, it would actually give a few toylines an actual challenge

This one Calvin & Hobbes strip, which came out in the 80's, summed up this decade's animation pretty well: Calvin's dad: "How can you stand these cartoons? They're just half-hour commercials for toys, and when they're not boring, they're preachy. And those characters don't even MOVE! They just stand around and blink! What kind of a cartoon is THAT?" The saccharine schlock isn't just terrible for being a way to teach morals to kids without parental intervention; it's terrible for being _bad_ at it. Putting aside the often-questionable morals (the most common being "The Complainer is Always Wrong"), the uncomplicated, black-and-white conflicts of these cartoons meant that the lessons they taught were flimsy, liable to come apart at the first touch of reality. Something less saccharine and more dramatic can have the depth required to teach _useful_ lessons to kids, without being as heavy-handed as saccharine schlock has to be.

Also, the DVD set of the Mr. T cartoon was released under the "Hanna Barbara Classics Collection" banner, since WB owns both libraries and probably thought the Hanna Barbara branding would sell better. One clear difference between HB and RS during this era is that they used different sound effect libraries - HB had their own library of sound effects that were originally created for stuff like The Flinstones and Yogi Bear, while RS used sound effects that originated from Looney Tunes

NiGHTS into Dreams seems to be the Moon Dreamers concept but way better. The former gets the human protagonists to have good dreams by fighting off nightmares in the forms of monsters, while the latter does that by being saccharine schlock that doesn't directly fight their villainess (from what I've seen). Plus NiGHTS was better by showing how weird and mystical dreams are.

It's weird how very few celebrity cartoons actually were good. Now you say "of course they are, they're celebrity cartoons", but let me point you into the direction of the "Jackie Chan Adventures" cartoon that was about world famous jackie chan in a cartoon. With magic, demons, sorcerer's, magical amulets, superpowers, time travel, archeology, thieves, sumo wrestlers, gangsters, the list goes on. That cartoon was actually good (season 2 onwards of course), why can't any other cartoon do this? Probably because the jackie chan cartoon was a cartoon first, then added him in as a character and built on it. All these other's seem to build a cartoon around the celebrity rather than making the cartoon first with them in.

To be fair Jackie Chan IS an actor so he'd probably be better in shows than most. This doesn't work for Chuck Norris or Mr T because, let's face it, they're not really actors. When Chuck Norris is on screen the character's name doesn't matter he's just going to be Chuck Norris. Mr T had BA in the A-Team but even that barely changed and it was especially obvious whenever a kid popped on screen. Jackie Chan is an actor in every sense of the word so he knows exactly what to do to make things enjoyable.

The fact that Little Clowns of Happytown was only a dishonorable mention, and not an official entry on the list did help make it less predictable. I've seen some good and bad 80s cartoons in my life, but now I think it's time to head back to our time.

Little Clowns of Happytown was just....awful. I'll describe it like this: In November 1987, while trying to watch the next episode of Garbage Pail Kids after the pilot, I noticed it wasn't been shown, so I changed the channel to ABC, listened to the themesong and watched about 2 minutes of the show before turning the channel to NBC. 2 Minutes was all my 4 and half year old mind could take.

You know, I could point out that even the good 80's shows had some of these flaws (Ducktales triplets had no defining character besides colored clothes, TMNT always swapped Turtle voices around), but what's the point? Every other point made is absolutely valid, and even giving these shows a pass on those issues doesn't make them any better.

Here's a thought, Moondreamers was released in 1986, while the original Nightmare on Elm Street came out 2 years earlier in 1984. Being that Freddy Krueger was becoming popular at that time, they should have had the main villain be one either based off, or a parody of him. In fact if anyone every does decided to try this concept again, but not terrible, I would expect Freddy Krueger to be in some way referenced in it.

You know, the plot of the Moon Dreamers would actually work if you made some fundamental changes: take out the overly saccharine fluff, give a bit of a serious tone but with some decent comedy, make the villain a more frightening and malevolent force that maybe wants to destroy the Moon Dreamers so it can give children nightmares in order to become powerful enough to take over the universe, remove the musical element and give it a better theme song with people who can actually sing and a song writer that can actually right. The Moon Dreamers has an interesting plot but that potential was wasted by making it an overly saccharine and cutesy kids show that mocked children's intelligence just like the original My Little Pony. If you remade it today and gave it a tone that was more serious yet can still be funny, you know like maybe The Loud House, it would probably be a better show
@kieravermeal9127
@kieravermeal9127 5 жыл бұрын
For the MoonDreamers, I actually drew the main characters (as well as a few of the villains) as if they were remade now. All of the MoonDreamers help kids overcome their insecurities, as well as change their personalities or update them: Crystal Starr (the leader) would help kids with body image. Dream Gazer would help kids deal with growing old. Whimzee (who now walks with a cane and a completely mangled leg) helps kids with physical disabilities (and I made her a tomboy). Sparky Dreamer would (possibly) kids with unseen disabilities (I might make her have Asperger's syndrome). Bucky Buckaroo (who was the boy of the group and whose personality was "boy") now is a bit more feminine and enjoys cute things. He would help kids with their identity, whether it be gender or sexual orientation. The little blob henchmen now represent the most common insecurities- Body images wealth/worthiness/expectations, and emotion control/relationships. I still got a way to go with redesigning, but it's a good start (and no, I won't be making it a story. I got my own story to worry about.)

Thankfully sanity won out - well, more or less, as we still got Mini-Moon in later seasons - and we got the original with those silly "Sailor Moon says" educational bits at the end...which were usually just the "Next time on Sailormoon" trailer for the episode with some inspirational thing spoken over it.

Even though the Pac-Man cartoon was pretty mediocre, I’m actually really glad that it existed. The Pac-Man cartoon had a HUGE influence on the series. It was arguably the first time the character was portrayed in an actual world, living as a father in a house with his wife and kid. It introduced Chomp Chomp, as well as made Sue her own character and not just a female version of Clyde. But most of all, it was what inspired Pac-Land, the first platformer in the series and the first side-scrolling platformer. Without that game, we wouldn’t have other Pac-Man games like it, such as Pac-Man 2 or the Pac-Man World series. Pac-Land was the main inspiration for Super Mario Bros, so we wouldn’t have that game without the cartoon. And seeing as how the idea for Sonic’s gameplay came from the creator trying to get through Super Mario Bros. as quickly as possible, so Sonic wouldn’t exist without this cartoon, as well as a bunch of other games that were influenced by these games. Basically, the Pac-Man cartoon is one of those things that is important to gaming history, even if it’s not particularly good on its own. I’d also like to say that the ghosts technically did have personalities in the original game, which the cartoon mimicked (even if they got them mixed up)

Just as a note, the Pac-man ghosts did have some kind of personality in the games. Obviously not a true fleshed-out personality, but every ghost did have a different behaviour that was explained through basic character traits, so you had some kind of idea of where the ghosts would go. It sounds silly and inconsecuential nowadays but back in the day this was kind of a big deal, especially with Pac-man fans. It doesn't negate what you said, because it was a personality created around the game instructions and hints and not within the game, but I think it's a interesting detail.

Actually Enter, Kidd Video's animation did get better in the second season because they switched studios and you tell the Japanese studio influence a lot more clearly. The show was still trippy though. To quote Robbie Rist, who played Wiz: "I don’t know what they put in the water cooler in the animation department, but it became this crazy thing that... it was like Lidsville. It was this acid-influenced, crazy animation. It became something like Alice in Wonderland, and I was in my twenties and watching these second-season episodes, going, “Is this for kids?” It was just a little bit too weird." Funny enough the show was cancelled because it was too expensive for NBC to produce, probably due to all the licensed music.

Mr. T actually had some strong talent going for it. Paul Dini, Chuck Dixon, and Flint Dille were all on the writing staff and Jack Kirby even did some of the character designs. It takes talent at every level in animation, I suppose, and everyone has to work within the narrow framework of what's presented to the network.

Fun Fact, Transformers are a rip-off of Go-bots. Go-bots came out a full year before the Transformers (Go-bots were 1983, Transformers 1984), and the animated series started 9 days prior to Transformers (Go-Bots was Sept 8th, 1984 Transformers was Sept 17th, 1984). But, like Hydrox and Oreo, the rip-off/knock off became/is the more popular brand. Is it sad I remember all these series? I was born in 1980 and lived through all of them... and remember actually having Potato Head Kids toys.

Child of the 1980s back to complain and confirm...or something. 5. The Moon Dreamers designs can be blamed on the dolls, but otherwise I never had a use for the show. It had potential but so did Robotman And Friends and they got that wrong. And that would continue into more recent stuff. Like Dino Squad. How do you make a show about teens who turn into full-sized dinosaurs to fight mutant dinomonsters BORING! Sorry, had to rant. 4.There were Potato Head Kids toys. They didn't have the different face parts and just swapped body parts. Actually, just arms and feet I think. Or they could have been figurines. I never really cared. 3. How is this HIGHER than Chuck Norris Karate Commandos, which tried to rip this off? I haven't even watched through the Mr. T one yet and I know we're going to disagree. I'm not sure WHY Mr. T is a gymnastics coach but the show works for me even today, and I loved it as a kid. Also, let's see if I'm right that you call this a Scooby-Doo ripoff simply for being a mystery. Yep, you did. Was Scooby-Doo the only mystery show ever allowed for kids or something? It's like saying you couldn't have another science fiction show because Flash Gordon already exists! 2. Never got into Camp Candy but it seems a bit high to me. Can't blame you for putting it on the list though. DMs: I disagree with most of the internet on Legend Of Zelda. I'm use to it. Gary Coleman show was loosely based on a TV movie Coleman did and I admit that didn't age well with me. Again, how is Chuck Norris not higher than Mr. T on this list since it's a bad ripoff of Mr. T. Totally agree on Get Along Gang. I really wanted to like it as a kid but couldn't. Pac-Man we'll just have to agree to disagree on. Mighty Orbots we are polar opposites on and did you just hate every show I grew up with? Not to mention if Orbots was ripping off anything it was Voltron, only the pilots ARE the robots. It's also one of the few kids shows with a definite ending. Karate Kid I also wanted to like but couldn't get into. Maybe because the magic item was out of place. Little Clowns were a better figurine series than a cartoon. (I still have my Super Clown.) 1. Admittedly Kidd Video is better conceptually than in execution but the band's original songs and videos were pretty good. You have to remember that networks didn't give these companies the highest budgets and syndication pretty much needed merchandise in order to have any real budget for first-run shows. There were only a few animation studios who combined had to fill 12 hours worth of cartoons every Saturday (8AM-12 PM plus shorts like Schoolhouse Rock) and maybe seven hours of daily cartoons (before and after school) for five days, each making months of shows since they didn't take midseason breaks. You put the whole season out at once and then syndicated during the spring and summer with a few specials for the kids who didn't go outside. The animation isn't going to be as good as today, with better equipment and techniques and a break to finish up the last half of the season. There are still reasons I loved the shows I grew up with when they could get past BS&P's silly standards or find a way to work around them. But at least your reasoning in this list has been better than some others I've heard about why my childhood was apparently a disgrace to childhood. Some shows I didn't like, some didn't age well, and some I still enjoy today either for nostalgia or because I just have looser standards (I can watch Paw Patrol and be entertained) but I still defend these shows based on the time and my own tastes. Well, the ones I thought worked anyway. No time period is safe from sub-par children's entertainment.

Regarding Chuck Norris' Karate Commandos: The 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in one of their running gags of the show had a proxy to Karate Commandos that the characters watched as a guilty pleasure. It's even funnier since the proxy/parody of Karate Commandos starred the character Chris Bradford, aka Rahzar, who, before he was mutated, was modeled after Chuck Norris. Who happened to be an arrogant elitist martial artist who worked for Shredder and the Foot Clan.

Aww, I actually really liked Camp Candy when I was a kid. It was usually played back to back with Gravedale High, a show that was a vehicle for Rick Moranis. Upon seeing your review of Camp Candy, I actually got the idea that maybe it was something that wasn't originally intended for kids, and certain story elements (like the main villain doing the right thing and the firefighter being shown as evil) were supposed to be satirical. Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for, after all, they aren't going to stop trusting firefighters just because one cartoon told them to.

No offense to John Candy, but this one episode sends a bad message by calling someone a snitch for calling the fire department when he should have and making fire fighters look like jerks. Yes I understand you have to have antagonist but you have to give the audience a justified reason to want your antagonist(s) to fail or else your protagonists start to lose sympathy and no making a character more unlike able doesn’t shift sympathy to another it just give us less reason to watch the show.

Kidd Video wasn't the only show that was made by DiC about a popular band. There was a show that aired at the same time with a similar concept called Wolf Rock TV, from what I heard it was given one 1/10 Review on IMDb by someone who worked on it said that he and other animators were mistreated and had to get episodes to air faster than pancakes at IHOP. It only lasted for 7 episodes before it was canceled for low ratings, making it along with Kidd Video DiC's first bombs. The only thing about the show that has resurfaced was its theme song. Which I will show here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4i7aourZ6qUaNk My thoughts on the intro, it's catchy and it has a nice tune to it, I mean, Wolfman Jack is a talented singer, so that shouldn't be surprising. But, aside from that, I can't find anything else about the show anywhere on the internet. I'm sure the show is just as bad as Kidd Video, maybe even worse than it (from what my dad told me), but we won't know that for sure until all 7 episodes are found.

I never liked Camp Candy growing up, except the opening theme. I also feel you're a wee bit hard on Kidd Video's use of Electric Avenue. The series itself is aweful, but using lyrics to relay info, even if its separate from the song's meaning and origins is vastly better imo then Raisins using Shop around for a shopping montage. The song at least has actual purpose to the plot. Also I feel a few of your 'dishonorable mentions' are good cartoons. Like Pacman. It managed to take a game series with no story or characterization and managed to give it both with memorable characters while also staying true to the limited game play. All the important stuff was there inside a still fun cartoon. While I defended Captain N as not being as bad as you make it out; To me Pacman and the Mario cartoons are sorta the gold standard of video game 80s cartoons, though Mario is second only due to the fact that it has character and story established... though thinking about it Mario and Luigi of modern days are still more or less the same personalities. Mario is the brave one, and yeah likes food while Luigi is the cautious and easily startled one. No one else is really the same but it's interesting that they've not changed much. Makes me wonder if modern takes is rooted in the old cartoons outta nostalgia or if Nintendo already had this characterization in mind even back then.

Captain N was basically non copyright infringing Nintendo and Capcom characters(and of course Samus isn’t part of it because that would make sense-). I swear it looks like they were making a parody of the protagonists and decided to make it official. Presumably ‘Simon’ was meant to be the pilot of the Vic Viper or something. Super Shoe was a good albeit cheesy cartoon, Zelda and the original Megamab were enjoyable mainly for the sheer ham purposes, PAC Man was...consistent in quality, it was pretty average, and Donkey Kong seems to shift between “so bad its good” and “pure stupid fun cheese” so it’s not really high quality so much as it’s fun. Captain N just...annoyed me.

Great video. To explain the Moondreamers and that horrible intro song. They were a largely forgotten Hasbro toyline. Glow in the dark dolls. The horrid show intro was just the toy commercial jingle looped. Even weirder the Potato Head kids were a oddly successful line of McDonalds Happy Meal Toys, that somehow got their own show. The McDonalds Toys had interchangeable feet and hats. Sound familiar? Cartoon wise the 80’s was really two distinct periods. The stuff pre-deregulation (Laverne and Shirley, Mark and Mindy etc) and the stuff after deregulation when it became pure toy commercials. The exact moment of the divide was pretty much the G I Joe miniseries. Which got around the regulations by being a commercial for the Marvel Comic books, and not the toys. It never would have held up to scrutiny, but the rules change happened right after.
