Problem I have with the majority of “adult “ animation: adult subject matter not handled In an adult way. Going purely for shock value may work for a while, but at some point the audience will say “ ok. What else ya got?” Don’t believe me? Just ask Carlos Mancia

This is usually why I tend to prefer some childrens shows and family movies. Yes, they're kid friendly, yet we got shows like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, TMNT 2012, etc. and movies like Zootopia that are geared towards a younger audience, yet dwelve deep into subject matter that are considered more adult, but yet kids can understand things. They're ignorant, not stupid. There's a difference. I often find shows that are geared towards kids to somehow be more mature than most adult shows, for the most part anyways.

Unicorn Lover123 thats why I said “the majority “ as opposed to “all”. For every spawn(and so I’m clear it’s one of my absolute fav things ever), or maxx, or castlevania, or bojack horseman, South Park, heavy metal, spice city(so glad someone brought that up. Bakshi is my spirit animal)there’s about 10 or so brickleberrys, or nut shacks, or stripperellas, or neo yokios, or any dime a dozen edgy for edge lords shit. Look, I’m not asking for any of these things to be removed. They have a right to exist, just as much as their fans have the right to enjoy them. I’m just saying that going purely for shock value without offering anything else is not sustainable. You may grab some headlines for now, but a year later unless you have something else going for it, no one is going to care. Case in point: one of my absolute favorite games Witcher 3. Beloved by most gamers, lots of gore, lots of sex, lots of darkness , but there’s a beautiful story and astounding gameplay. People still praise it, and I guarantee it’ll be talked about for ages. By contrast, how many are still talking about hatred? How many folks actually remember that hatred even exists? I hope I’ve clarified my position to a satisfactory level .

How ironic that the people who claim to want more representation, so as to move away from stereotypes, also rely on stereotypes like crazy. @@YamatoFukkatsu They've done studies where conservatives and leftists answered questions and then answered them again as if they were the other group. @frieza65
@frieza65 4 жыл бұрын
@@YamatoFukkatsu You're conflating ideas that are only superficially similar. Both evoke a feeling of ridicule, but with wildly differing contexts. There is a stark difference between stereotypes of social minority groups peppered throughout different genres, and stereotypes in the context of a satire. The latter examples serve a point and are woven into the framework of a satire, which includes exaggeration of reality. The problems arise when the point gets muddled and contradicts itself, as Enter pointed out with various examples, but that's a matter of execution, not the stereotypes. Put another way... there's a massive difference between Blazing Saddles and Our Cartoon President. The former stereotypes which are protested by those who call for representation, meanwhile, have no grander point to them and are not commenting on anything. They are generally not woven into a satire, and are more often than not born out of the writers' own flaws, in the sense that they're either an all-around dick, or they're actually attempting to be inclusive but are fucking it up. And then there are those who pretend to give a shit about representation but don't, and are only trying to make themselves look good and failing. I'd also question how you figure that those who call for representation are also the ones responsible for the stereotypes you're referring to. Seems like a claim with no empirical evidence. Unless of course you're just grouping everyone into "the left" category and going from there. Almost like you're... oversimplifying a group and their views to make it easier to go after. Almost like you're... what's the word? Ah, doesn't matter. But I feel it's quite... ironic, nonetheless.

I remember Enter did address this to an extent, something like "When people ask for total integration, you either have everyone being the same which kills the cultures, or you become the stereotype resulting in an insulting representation", and to quote someone else, "If you make a character based purely on their skin, you're gonna get a skin-deep character, and thus a shallow story". Let's hope the 2020s bring on the re-realization of these things

Saying Trump jokes is easy. Coming up with original material is difficult. Low hanging fruit but it’s a very plentiful and lack of variety crop. They all been done to death and when he provides new material (like the whole covfefe thing) it quickly becomes a dead horse. The delay due to animation time doesn’t help. As a cartoon a Trump type figure works best as a recurring character in a Simpsons or Futurama type show, like Mayor Quimby or President Nixon.

Funny enough, the only good Trump joke that I heard recently (that I laughed out loud about) was from a recent airing of a Simpsons episode that originally aired almost two decades ago; In that episode, Homer does some hand gestures on a balcony and Lisa tells him to stop imitating Mussolini (since the family is in Italy and that would reflect badly on them), to which Homer replies, "Mussolini? I thought I was imitating Trump!" Giving how some people view Trump now, I couldn't help but laugh.

One of the best decisions that the creators of _South Park_ did was reduce the Trump jokes starting in season 21. According to Trey Parker, the Trump jokes were too overdone, and the writers "fell into the same trap that _Saturday Night Live_ fell into, where it was like, 'Dude, we're just becoming CNN now.'" They wanted to go back to focusing on "the bread and butter of _South Park_ : kids being kids and being ridiculous and outragous."

Also, making constant empty jokes about Trump is a _lot_ easier than, say, actually taking the time to think about the state of American politics and what about it actually led to Trump being elected. Moderates are afraid of critical analysis like that, because then they'll realize Trump isn't the problem, he's the symptom to a larger issue with the government and politics.

The sole interesting thing about "Our Cartoon President" is the program that was used to animate it. Which was the then in development Adobe Character Animator. Which was essentially a digital puppet program. I've used it in a few of my reaction videos and I can tell you that even two years later, it still has a long way to go before it can really compete with industry standard programs like Toonboom and Animate. Mainly due to the fact that making convincing puppets that animate well is still going to take a lot of effort to draw and rig up. At which point you might as well just go into animate, and just do it all in there.

Animated political satire only works best either as single-frame political cartoons (whether in print or online) or short-form web animation which can get away with cheaper and/or cruder animation; FreedomToons would be an example of the latter. A 2 to 3 minute web cartoon can take about a week to make for a small team, but a 20 minute TV-quality cartoon, barring South Park, takes at least 6 months to do it right, considering that you have multiple animators, writers, editors, directors, etc.

10. I kind of like this show. However, I definitely think this is a far cry from MLP’s quality. 9. I guess it gets interesting around Season 3, but the episodes are too unappealing and unfunny for me to give a shit. 8. The most bare-bones adult cartoon of this decade, PERIOD. Can’t believe the creators got to make the same goddamn show, “BuT tHIs tImE wiTH copS.” 7. Three minutes in, and my eardrums are already liquified. Thanks, Butch. 6. I haven’t really seen this show, but knowing how America handles politics, I’m just gonna assume that it’s filled the usual “orange man bad” jokes you’ll find on Twitter and late night talk shows that will most certainly not be dated in the next few years from now.

One thing newer decades do a lot better than previous is preservation. The reason everyone is so split on whether or not the 2010's are the best or the worst is because most if not everything from it is a few clicks away, whether it's streaming or some archival site, and KZbin is a surefire way to keep bad stuff on the cultural zeigeist. The previous decades only remember the best of the best and the worst of the worst, while everything in between is just gone, so it looked like there were more quality shows, because you don't remember anything else.

i grew up in the 90s so i have to refute that. there were just more shows in general on the major networks. cartoon network aired their back catalog of hanna barbera shows and quality animation and action cartoons had gotten popular again. there were a lot of high risk shows from no-name creators that rarely get made today, especially on tv. if it weren't for streaming, we would have nothing but comedies here in the west. even if you watch some of the mediocre or even the bad offerings of the 90s, many of them are a lot more entertaining or creative than their 2000s equivalent. you just grew up too late and are nostalgic for your own generation.

I think the only Trump joke that ever got a snicker out of me was: „Why did Trump attend the Olympics?“ „He wanted to see how high the Mexicans jump.“ The reason why this joke works while most Trump jokes don’t is that it has multiple layers. There’s Trump and his memetic goal of „building a great big wall“. Then there’s the famous entertainment of the Olympics and a subversion of as to why someone would attend them. And then there’s a ridiculous mental image, that of people just jumping over this massive wall at the US border. That’s three jokes for the price of one and you don’t even need to have a certain opinion on Trump to find it funny.

*Also, the only times I recall a “let’s compare Trump to a pop-culture villain” joke actually being funny to me are these:* 1.) Andy Serkis reciting a Trump tweet as Gollum, since we actually got to see him immediately getting into character, while also hybridizing it with someone else’s personality, resulting in a funny performance. 2.) This one KZbin mashup titled “Donald Trump is a Dinosaur!” by Matt Orfalea, because he was able to get so many back-to-back clips, where the behavior of Donald Trump and B.P. Richfield is surprisingly uncanny. This is unlike other jokes, where Trump and the pop-culture antagonist have almost nothing in common other than being “evil”. Some of the resemblances between Trump and the corporate Triceratops have to be seen to be believed, especially because “Dinosaurs” came out decades before Trump ran for presidency, rather than “Our Cartoon President” which was obviously made after the fact and not that imaginative/coincidental.

What I hate about shows like Mr. Pickles and movies like Sausage Party is that, while on the surface they seem to subvert the idea that animation is for kids, they in fact accomplish just the opposite. Basically, the one and only joke upon which everything in Mr. Pickles and Sausage Party is based is as follows: "Animation is supposed to be for kids, so isn't it ironic that all this adult stuff is happening?" By creating an exception to the rule out of irony, they end up reinforcing the rule. All I want is animation for adults without a shred of irony, like what we got in the 70s and 80s.

thing is, the kind of animation you are talking about is essentially PG-PG-13 animation the kind you and your dad would sneak off into the family room to watch after he got home at 1 am on a saterday, Dragon Ball Z Gundam, Courage the cowardly dog, samurai Jack Batman TAS. If we want to talk movies, secret of Nim, The black cauldron, coraline. They just don't make those kinds of shows anymore. animation seems to fall into one of two categories. College level humor, IE South park & family guy or let's talk down to our audience simple. I blame our society that seems to think kids can't handle violence or complex nuanced issues without being wrapped under thinly veiled metaphors. Hate me if you want, but I really question if Steven Universe would near as popular as it is if it wasn't for the fact that all it's main characters fall under the lgbtq spectrum, and it's main protagonist being very effeminate, not saying that these things make them inherently bad or anything, but it's rather telling that a cartoon show about technicolor talking ponies becomes a cultural phenomenon simply because it does somthing unthinkable like not talk down to it's aduiance and doesn't surger code it's ideas. the times it DID try to do that, were considered some of the worst episodes of the show,

I think that's the problem with political fiction. There needs to be a balance between accuracy and symbolism. When a work is too accurate, it becomes boring, because you get the same amount of entertainment by looking out a window. When a work is too vague, it becomes confusing and frustrating.

Dystopia can still be escapism depending on it's implementation, such as playing a raider type character in post apocalyptic setting and reveling in the freedom and excitement that a world bereft of law and order provides, or a dystopian setting but playing the hero or the reformer and so on, or the overlord of of a dystopian society. Probably the best example I can think of for dystopianism would probably be Shin Megami Tensei, yeah the world is a monster infested Hellscape but you have the power to befriend and command monsters of your own to do battle and reshape the world according to your ideals through your actions, plus you can hit on and be hit on be various lovely (and not so lovely) monster women so yeah dystopian or not it's still very much escapism.

I can not resist to spoil that the #1 worst entry is Big Mouth's Requiem for a Wet Dream, because it took 3 viewings of it for me to wrap my head around the illogic of three plots being Andrew's dream and now being disconnected from the rest of the first season's storyline. Y'know what I personally hate about DC Superhero Girls? Instead of creating a really fun, kick-ass scenario involving all of these awesome female superheroes and supervillains that some might hope for, the showrunners chose to use the tired and dated "quirky, adorable high school girl club" setup that everyone is SOOOO tired of at this point. This is, in my opinion, a little demeaning to these characters and kind of defeats the point of delivering a female-empowering message by resorting to decades-old stereotypes and tropes. They even go as far as to ruin favorite DC superheros like Wonder Woman and Zantanna by making them annoying and stupid teenagers, thus further alienating actual fans of the DC comics - including females who look up to these characters as feminist role models.

@powerstar 2028 counter argument. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad. And besides that, many shows that are considered classics from the 90s on the 80s and the 70s and so on have not aged well at all. The art styles on most of them from the 80s and earlier feel stiff and dated. Jonny Quest ( not to be confused with Johnny Test) was a real hit at the time it was made. now, it's derivative storytelling and racist stereotypes are borderline garbage.

"Why would you want to be?" isn't necessarily a bad question to ask in itself, it all depends on what message you are trying to send and if it is well meaning, it is important to not follow up that question with bigotry or fallacies. The best follow-up to "Why would you want to be?" is asking if the other "thinks they would made happier if they were more like them and if so, why?" There is nothing wrong with wanting to be more like others as long as this isn't at the expense of your individuality and of what makes you happier. The message should be: there is nothing wrong with not fitting the norm if that means being true to yourself and you shouldn't change yourself if only to fit the stereotypes of your sexuality, your sex, your race, your social group... And this is the problem with most shows that tries to tackle such a topic. They don't know how to empower without demonizing and ending up drowning any inspiring message and good will they might have carried.

What bothers me isn't that there's socio-political messages in media. That's always existed. It's that socio-political messages have been inserted into EVERY piece of media. No one seems to care about telling a good story or being entertaining or being escapism anymore because now EVERYBODY has to push these messages. And, what worse, they don't even allow for audiences to draw their own conclusions. They have to tell people how to think and feel about things. Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Marge gets violence censored but then more parents get more things censored and the episode allows you to consider how much is too much and what the solution might be? If that episode aired now, it would pick a solution and cram it down your throat as the only one. One of the reasons ATLA/LOK were so good at presenting themes was that both shows presented more than one side on any subject and allowed their audience to draw their own conclusions. I know there are other shows that do that, but they feel buried under all the shows that don't. And, yeah. Maybe I'm weird, but I miss when media was diverse enough that you could just as easily watch something for entertainment only (like Darkwing Duck) AND a show with themes/messages (The Wild Thornberrys for example) AND a show with socio-political commentary (I'm going to go with Duckman since I already mentioned The Simpsons).

(that show only got a dishonorable mention in part two of the list) At least DCSHG has some good lessons, more action, and characters that develop, but TTG has the same one-dimensional characters, not a lot of battles, and teach children bad morals. Also, TTG pokes fun at fans of the original series while the only time the two versions of DCSHG collided is in a comic book about dimensions.

Let me drop this as a literature professor - people really mistake what escapism is. Escapism really doesn't let you cope by completely forgetting things, or the real world around you. Yes, it can do that for a while, but a large part of why escapism works is the fact that the narrative gently eases you back into looking at issues you are running away from. That initial moment of distancing from reality is supposed to give you grounding, and that grounding helps you then to analyze a situation in a calmer manner. You can make sense of your own emotions if you see a character going through something similar, or write a character like that, since it forces your mind to put it into understandable forms, and give you a detached experience. Not to mention it is outright cruel to say that political themes or feelings should not be put into shows. Not only does this cut away from vast opportunities at narrative and storytelling, and take away healthy way of escapism, it is just outright cruel to tell an author not to express their feelings via their work. It's basically telling them that they are just your mindless machine for entertainment production, and not a human being. If a theme of, let's say, poverty can be incorporated into a story, and weighs heavily on a creator's mind, it's inhumane to deny them that expression. Even still, many of them will do that subconsciously. I hadn't realized how much of my own experiences I put into my own works until years later. In my eyes, "remove your political views from your show" is a cruel and wrong message, and is often used for censorship. Yes, everything is political, and, for society to function, it kinda has to be. But, contrary to the popular belief, it is not a bad thing, not even close. It's healthy when media and shows connect to the real world, even better when they ease into it gradually. Things becoming more political is far from bad.

I'm constantly stressed out as is, I don't want to see characters I love being beaten to a pulp by the writers. (I stopped watching Ducktales 2017 for this reason.) I don't want every show to be "Care Bears" or "Little Clowns of Happy Town", but there's a difference between "conflict" and "torture". (Disclaimer: I hyperempathize-I'm never going to be a doctor because even hearing about someone else's medical issues makes me pale. I get emotionally exhausted by shows that constantly put their characters through the ringer, even if I know they're going to be okay. My threshold for angst is likely lower than the average person and I understand that.)

@@GodOfOrphans I have to admit I can enjoy angst from time to time (I'm not always kind to my own characters), though sometimes it feels like writers are torturing their characters at the expense of the plot or just for the hell of it, if that makes sense? Like, they twist the plot like a pretzel just to come up with a contrived way of making the characters (and their audience) suffer as much as possible when there was more potential if they took a plot in a different direction? I'm glad you understand where I'm coming from though. :>

The only Trump joke that actually got a laugh out of me (though more of a brief chuckle than anything) was a couple cheap shots regarding his toupee. Everything else was mostly centered around some red hat or talking down on somebody else for having a different opinion, regardless if it was about politics or not. It's all repetitive and pretty annoying.

I actually really like DC's Superhero Girls but I will NOT argue with you on any of your criticisms against it, I was just as angry with it as you are. I really just like it because Supergirl's design gives her way more personality than her previous "Superman, but a girl!" design from the comics. But in all honesty I'm just projecting what I *want* onto the show instead of knowing what the show actually is because the character design is so good.

Not a huge comics buff but based on how she acts in Injustice 2 and what I've heard from others Power Girl is probably more of what you're hoping for, you can also watch some Justice League Unlimited episodes with Supergirl in them, she isn't in all that many but she's fantastic in all the ones she shows up in.

I'm one of the people that argues that there are good Trump jokes that exist, the issue is they aren't said...or at the very least aren't said anymore. It's very rare that you find an original and funny Trump joke. Most of them, if not all at this point, have just been beaten into the ground so much that it's painful to hear any of them. The irony is, I find it more entertaining when a Conservative makes a Trump joke than a Liberal or Progressive, because the Conservatives actually find (or attempt to find) something unique to poke fun at, rather than the same two or three things that the Liberals or Progressives do.

I know, mocking the President has been a great American, or hell even global pastime for generations but it was effectively ruined in the span of a few months, I didn't even think it possible to beat something into the ground that quickly before.

I don't see how a Trump cartoon could work. Yeah people jokingly say hes a cartoon villain. But that further emphasizes how over the top and unusual he really is and how hes really not funny. Trump's not funny because hes real. If that doesn't make sense, Think of the quote where Trump said he could shoot someone in the middle of a crowded street and wouldn't lose any support. On tv that would be funny because of just how evil it sounds. In real life its just sad. And so we make fun of his spray tan.
