I'm an 80s survivor and stumbled upon this. I just have to say, as a kid who was OBSESSED with all things Nintendo... I couldn't stand Captain N for all the reasons you mentioned. You're 100% right. The fact that it was made by people who clearly didn't give a crap about the games\characters was totally obvious, even to a ten year old.

I didn't play much of the Megaman series. For some reason it wasn't as accessible likely because of Capcom's hiatus on making Megaman. And even I find Megaman's disservice in the show most unfortunate. That said, I grew up more with Castlevania which I still am a fan of to this day. I dunno; being a vampire hunter is just too cool a concept to pass up. The Belmonts aren't robots or angels, they are just kickass humans. So their portrayal of its characters is the one I am most offended by. I kinda get Simon was headstrong in Castlevania lore but that's no excuse to flanderize him like that. Dracula, or The Count is laughable compared to his video game counterpart. Alucard... oh boy. It was years before Symphony of the Night was released, I get it, but his Generation X elements are obnoxious and I feel like Wayne's World was a better representation of it. And there is also an old wizard who is apparently supposed to be Sypha... who is male here. Needless to say the Castlevania anime was a better representation of the characters. Hell, the Ruby Spears Megaman cartoon was better use of Megaman and Super Smash Bros was a better gathering of iconic and former Nintendo IPs. Ultimate even had Simon, Pit, and Megaman in the same game, which by the way is awesome.
@spydersoup84474 жыл бұрын
Well, at least Knox Robbins' Captain N reboot looks promising and definitely a much better improvement. Also for the fact that Pit (The character whom in the orignal show is named Kid Icarus. I'm surprised that Mr Enter didn't even mentioned this problem like most reviewers would when looking into the show. Although I saw a multiparter review of this show and although he mention the fact that the character's name is Kid Icarus when he's supposed to be named Pit, but he didn't even mention Samus Aran's absence in the show like Mr Enter did. So, I guess this is kinda no different here) is a lot more well known today than he was back in the 80s, mainly due to his return in Brawl and the popularity of Uprising that came out afterwards, so, including him as part of the main cast of this reboot is actually not a problem now.

I love how Captain N had Mother Brain from Metroid as the main villain, but Samus - Metroid’s main character - never appeared once, because the writers “had never heard of her”. Just goes to show how laughably bad that show was
@WillieManga5 жыл бұрын
If they said they didn't include her because they didn't know what to do with her, I'd be more fine with that but it would still beg to question why did they make Motherbrain the villain? Make Dracula the villain; he is awesome! Speaking of, it is clear that the producers didn't even play the games. Even Castlevania Judgement gave Simon a more likable personality than the Simon in the show. Sypha Belnades apparently appears as a Merlin knockoff. And they didn't seem to know what to do with Pit either. Yeah, his name was Pit in the games. And of course, Megaman looks nothing like himself and Rebeltaxi called him an "underage chain smoker" because of his coarse voice. And all the villains are as weak as Dracula's boss battle in Simon's Quest.
@dynostretch92154 жыл бұрын
While she didn't appear in the show, in the Valiant comics, they did a number of Metroid stories, including having Samus appear in a few Captain N stories. I actually think they did pretty well depicting her character. She's a tough customer, occasionally can rush into situations, but once she figures out her enemy she can come up with pretty devious tricks to fool them. In one Captain N comic she tricks Mother Brain out of 10 times her bounty, and in a Metroid comic she booby-traps her own blaster to fool a fellow bounty hunter when he tries to kill her with it. It's depressing when an American comic book company can make a more interesting Samus then her original creator could in Other M.

Guys please, he's not really saying the 80s was ALL bad. There is some good to it, and I'm sure he'd agree. But when its bad, its REALLY bad, and its the same for every generation. It just takes a reasonable person to distinguish between the good and the bad. So let's pick apart the bad stuff, shall we? 10. Well, off to a good start already. Was this necessary, a cartoon based on the RUBIX CUBE!?! If this is where we start, then we're in for a ride. 9. One of many Scooby Doo ripoffs, an advertisement based off something that didn't need a cartoon, and an overall bland show. What's not to like? 8. They had potential, and they messed it up. One of the ad cartoons that could've worked given their popularity, and they messed it up. They could've made the plots interesting, the characters a bit more recognizable, make the songs work, but guess what, they dropped the ball!!! 7. Ah yes, Captain N, its pretty much this show's fault (as well as the other video game shows at the time) that people are a bit more hesitant to do more shows based on video games. Thankfully they're at least giving them a try again, and with some effort. This on the other hand, I genuinely can't stand it. It got so much wrong on so many levels, and I'll never forgive it for that! 6. I was never really into sitcoms in the first place, animating them only makes them cash grabs, and bad ones at that. These are just nothing more than bland shows attempting to capitilize on the popularity the shows these are soullessly based off of in an attempt to grab kids' attention.

Wow.. This comment section. I have no words at all. To think that in an era where money-pumping toy making cartoons was such a vast cavalcade that touched the hearts of all. Most of the shows had cliches that everyone has seen time and time again. Hell shows like He-Man and Thundercats were mostly so bad it's good. Another thing to point out... The 90's wasn't exciting most of the time either yes cartoons became more interesting, fleshed out, and a spectacle to view countless times but that era had it's flaws as well. It's not surprising to say that every era of cartoon had their pros and cons. The 2000s had good and bad cartoons as well as recent years. Coming up with a cartoon takes effort and creativity for better or worse and those shows were the creators' goldmine for the companies. The next era will be no different too there's bound to have more bad than good cartoons for the upcoming generation to expect. For the people complaining about his disdain of the 80s shows are no better than to shit on his views it's called perspective we all have it.

While the Eighties are a cultural goldmine, Y'all know full well that everything about it wasn't gold. MANY (not all) of the cartoons of that decade were merely vehicles to sell merch/toys, to capitalize on the popularity of a celeb at the time, or to ride the coattails of a popular movie (that many times, the original movies weren't even kid-friendly). These cartoons were cheap, painfully average and forgettable. I'll defend GOOD '80s toons only (even if they're vehicles for selling toys).

Child of the early 80s here. Kid Icarus was probably part of the cast because he was still considered part of Nintendo's big names back then. You're low balling his popularity a bit from back then, despite the lack of sequel. Pitt, at least for the time, was still considered one of their big identifying characters, although below Simon and mega man. Fun fact, Captain N was originally going to be a cartoon with the main character being the kid from Paperboy, but they weren't pushing that at the time. You can still see prototype art online of the concept. As for Samus, she would appear in the comic version. As for the cartoon, cartoon studios downplayed having non damsel female characters because they believed their action figures wouldn't sell. Scarlet, Lady Jane, She Ra, and maaaybe April O'Neil were as close as we got to having action themed heroines in anything. And yes, the 80s were fairly bright and odd. Lastly, doesn't Rubix kinda sound like Foamy from Illwillpress? And mega man sounds like the Slurm aliens from Futurama imo.

I mean, even today with My Little Pony and Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse; just because a show is based on a toy doesn't inherently make it bad. @@prestonfontana8416 I think many animators have bigger plans for their characters, but they have to fight with the networks. Generally, networks hate story arcs. They don't like continuity, they want to run episodes in random order, or the episodes that get the highest ratings, without having to worry about skipping the episode where the character gets mentored and gets the magic thingy he needs to finish the arc. Avatar the last airbender started out with a kind of "villain of the week" vibe, but then escaped it. Teen Titans was a quality show with story arcs, TTG is four spongebobs being so random, and cartoon network marathons the hell out of it.

In all seriousness, though, Kanye West isn't as good of a Hip Hop artist as many people believe, let alone the "artist of a generation". Most of his music merely takes the most basic, surface level elements of other genres (like Rock, Electronica/Industrial) and adding little to no new perspectives on said genres. In general, his discography essentially adds up to nothing more than generic pop culture pastiches mixed with pseudo-philosophic ideas of divinity and omnipotence. Easily one of the most superficial, one-dimensional musicians I've ever heard.

The 80's as a cartoon decade is interesting, mostly crap that people are too blinded by nostalgia to really see for what it is. I know I've tried to go back and watch and it's physically painful. A lots of stuff from that decade does not hold up at all. The problem with so many cartoons are there tied to the time they came out and all the trends and fads of the time. The creators of Captain N pretty clearly only based their depictions of video game characters on brief moments of seeing other people play video games. They stated the reason why Mother Brain is in the cartoon but Samus isn't is because they never heard of Samus. And I could go into a ton of other shit that makes it clear they didn't care. For example when the show did depict Castlevania, it depicted Alucard as a rebellious teen who ultimately goes and sides with Dracula anyways, even though he was a hero in Castlevania III. Here's the thing about "Captain N". The people in charge of the show were the epitome of "didn't care". Somebody asked about why Mother Brain was a villain but Samus was nowhere to be seen. The response? "What's a Samus?" They literally only looked at the names of the characters and went from there. Like you said, at least Mario and Zelda decided to embrace the cheesiness and go all-out with it. They knew it was stupid, and they chose to roll with it and have fun. I even have some old episodes of the Mario show on VHS, and I loved it because it was so goofy. Captain N was an idea that if they actually gave a shit back then when they were making it, it could have been absolutely amazing. Imagine all the ideas you could come up with by mix-and-matching video game heroes, villains, and settings! (Although the SMB3 show's "Super Koopa" had an awesome idea and followed through with it: "What if Koopa was able to not just create and use power-ups, but also combine them into things like a Fire/Tanooki/Kuribo combination, and fought the Mario Bros. in the real world so they didn't have any to fight back with?" The solution made perfect sense, too. They had Toad use a Toad House chest, gather a shit-ton of power-ups, and bring them to the real-world to fight back. For a kid who played the games, that was freaking awesome!)

I think I actually just came up with a good idea for a Rubik's cube cartoon: The cube is intelligent but doesn't have a face or limbs. It's just a flying cube. It has the power to connect it's own progress towards being solved with puzzles in the environment around it. So each episode the human main characters would get into some sort of situation that they need to think their way out of, and the cube would be like a visual metaphor for their progress towards solving their predicament. They can use the cube to judge whether or not they are on the right track to solve their current puzzle. What do y'all think?

I have an idea- it's yugioh but instead of playing card games, they solve Rubik's Cubes. Also it's the Indus Valley Civilization instead of Egypt, there's no magic DID, and the girl is a reincarnation of a princess. Or some other tournament type thing like that, or Beyblade or something. Or it's Solarbabies but not post-apocalyptic. Or it's a generic McGuffin with vaguely defined powers that the kids found one day and they have to solve it to use its powers, and whenever you use its powers it shuffles, so you have to solve it again if you want to use it again. The last idea is probably the best, but that also depends on the context.

Instance #1: Part of the Olympics episode takes place in the Punch-Out universe (which is simply called "Punch Out" instead of its canon name, the WVBA). Despite this, they don't use any of the Punch-Out boxers, instead just filling it with the standard villains and random mooks. The most we get of anything Punch-Out is a brief cameo from Glass Joe, who appears at the beginning of the scene getting knocked out by his own shadow, and then at the end where he gets eggplant slush thrown in his face (don't ask). Somehow, despite only being there for about 7 seconds, this is one of the most accurate depictions of an NES-era Nintendo character in the entire show, in terms of appearance and personality (although they made him extremely ugly). Instance #2: Idk which episode this was, but King Hippo summons an army of boxers who are very loosely based on the Punch-Out cast to help him wreak havoc on Mount Icarus. And by "very loosely", I mean I have no clue who half of them are supposed to be. Also, Glass Joe is depicted as a blue nerdy blob thing, even though in his previous appearance, he was a regular-ass human. All I can say is that I'm glad Super Punch Out and the Wii remake gave these characters justice, because holy hell.

The most important thing to remember when looking back at the '70s. Cocaine. The most important thing to remember when looking back at the '80s. Better cocaine.

As a child of the 80's I've been looking forward to this review. Never knew the Shirt Tales were from greeting cards. As for Captian N, even as a kid I hated how they made Simon Belmont and Mega Man, one big reason my friends and I tuned in was to see what new games and characters they would be adding to Video Land and the crossover with Legend of Zelda. The show got even dumber when Gameboy became a charater...yes that is a thing that happened. Never watched the Rubiz show, or the three-way tie in the number 6 position and the only California Raisins show I remember was a claymation Christmas special

To be fair, toy-based cartoons did lead to some amazing follow-ups and reboots. Beast Wars, Thundercats 2011, and a certain show you used to talk about a lot...

Can you believe they had Matt Hill, the voice of Ed from Ed Edd N Eddy as that loser Captain N?

17:21 because one of the productor's TV was messed up and Megaman's color sprite was like in the show. So yea, Megaman's design was from someone's messed up TV.

If you were a kid in the 80's, it was a golden age. You'd watch your toys come to life on TV everyday after school and on Saturday mornings. Adults and maybe older kids today make it out like the 30 minute toy commercial cartoons were a bad thing, but for us kids at the time, it was fantastic. It's one of those things where I think you truly had to be there at the right age to really appreciate. When it ended I felt sorry for the kids who were born after us. You missed out on something special. Good choices for worst cartoons so far. I actually forgot some of those existed. A few I've never seen, and I'm not sorry I missed.

You know what's surprisingly funny? In Mysterious Mr. Enter's Worst Cartoons of the 1990s video, he predicted that he'd probably do his Worst Cartoon of the 1980s list in about 2-3 years. From the date his Worst Cartoons of the 1980s' video is released to when his Worst Cartoons of the 1990s wrapped up, he actually arrived here in a little over 1 1/2 years. Way sooner that he was expecting, am I right?
