I think it depends on your sense of humor. You did handle this WAY better than voiceofreason, though. For example: you weren't SCREAMING AND BEING ANGRY JUST TO GET YOUR POINT ACROSS.

The anger part is part of the humor. I would understand that you didn't find it funny, but you think that he was just angry. Take the Angry Video Game Nerd. People find him funny when he rages. Probably Because he takes his anger to whole new levels, but still.

***** AVGN gets angry for humor. Voiceofreason gets angry and it's never humorous nor is it intended to be. He thinks that being angry will make his argument sound valid. I mean look at his FIW review: his argument has several flaws so he looks incompetent as a reviewer and he looks childish when he gets angry over details that he later ADMITTED to analyzing wrong.

I did find FiW funny, but I respect your opinion. Oh! The "I'm American" joke was suppose to make fun of the whole Doctor Whooves thing, and how, because he's american, he can't be Doctor Who (british).

But the scene had nothing to do with Doctor Who. It was about selling apples. If the joke was relevant it might have worked, but otherwise it would just end up lost on a lot of people.

I actually have seen Doctor Who, and I was aware of that particular pony being compared to the Doctor because of his appearance, but being American still didn't make me suddenly think "Oh, he isn't the Doctor." If a reference had to be made, it really should have been more relevant to the thing they're trying to reference.

I _really_ hate this review. Not because of his opinions, he can like or dislike the series, it's not my business. It's because he's judging this from a very poor angle. He states several times that he doesn't get the joke and judges the show for that, then at one point, blames the show for alienating him because he doesn't. Taking a parody show this seriously when that's clearly not the creator's intention will almost inevitably lead you not to enjoy the content because of the mindset you entered with.
@AnnieGalla
@AnnieGalla 10 жыл бұрын
He says that the series uses too many running gags and that it doesn't understand humor. He explained why it takes the uncreative and lazy route instead of being creative and compares it to other things he reviewed that do the same thing but a lot less people like. Also it being a parody is not an excuse. It is obvious that the series is supposed to be a parody but that does not excuse them handling the content poorly.

I love how if people disagree with a review, that means the reviewer is "too harsh" or "taking it too seriously" but the moment they review something the viewer doesn't care about or thinks is bad then suddenly the reviewer "is spot on" and "knows what they're talking about" I swear people. Such fanboys.
@amirakitty
@amirakitty 10 жыл бұрын
Why can't people watch the review and not take it so seriously then? Why does a review have to be a bible to some people and the moment someone disagrees they're ready to burn it? Same with every negative review on something people will still go "they're nitpicking" "this person just doesn't get it" "I love this show therefore whoever doesn't like it is wrong" Just let someone have an opinion, MLP fans. I'd think a show that promotes friendship and understanding of others and tolerance you'd let the guy have an opinion without tearing him apart or calling him stupid for not getting a damn apple reference or thinking siblings dating is "funny" or for not liking something so.... Out there. Or do fans just like the show because pretty colors and easy to make OC pony characters and not the morals it teaches? Granted, not all fans and comments are like this, but enough of them are to make the fan base leave a bad taste in my mouth when prior I didn't care. Seriously, get off your high horses, or ponies, whatever, and just know people can actually not like your parodies. I'd think bronies would be used to people not liking their stuff :/
@amirakitty
@amirakitty 10 жыл бұрын
People just have different tastes, if he doesn't like the jokes, doesn't like the show, doesn't like how it is structured, of course he can and probably will make a video saying why he doesn't. To claim someone is "nitpicking" or taking something "too seriously" when the show is out there for people to view and nowhere says "Do not review this as it is not serious and we didn't put in any effort so you can't judge us" then no one can complain can they? Basically you're saying "this show has specific humor and the storytelling is poor" so of course expect people to go this show is bad and here is why. Just take the review for what it is, a review and an opinion, you can disagree with it but seeing people claim blasphemy or that the reviewer is stupid or uncultured is just ignorant fanboys rushing to defend a show that apparently "shouldn't be taken seriously." If it isn't meant to be serious why are people so seriously defending it? It's just a review.
@amirakitty
@amirakitty 10 жыл бұрын
So what you're saying people can't review something they don't like? What about his Spongebob reviews? People love Spongebob and he doesn't as of the more recent seasons. Does he look too deep into it? Does he find the imagery gross and disturbing? Maybe even more than others? How about his other animate atrocities? Is it because the animates are so universally bad that it is okay? It all comes down to "I like this, therefore you can't dislike it without you being clearly an idiot or uncultured. You just don't understand it. This show is great, you just suck." And that's all I am seeing people throw back. Critics are just that, critics. They critic things. They aren't going to kiss the ass of the makers or praise the... "humor" of it if they don't like it. Not every critic has to like what the viewer likes. If people want a positive review then by all means make one. Or find one somewhere. The world isn't all magic and happiness, people will have different opinions, people just seem too delusional to understand "Hey, someone doesn't like the humor of this show. It isn't for everyone so I can respect that. Oh well, I like it, and I enjoy it, so no harm done." No. Instead it's "What?! You don't get the joke?! You're stupid for not understanding the humor! How dare you not find incest funny! How dare you find it creepy! And how dare you say this apple joke is stupid, clearly you don't understand obscure out of nowhere references only people as smart and cool as me would!" Like... seriously? But what do I expect? People on the internet to accept people have different opinions? Shame on me.
@amirakitty
@amirakitty 10 жыл бұрын
It comes down to people have opinions. Someone can voice something being lame or stupid or garbage if they want, and people can defend what they like. It's a matter of how. And the bronies/fan boys did/do it poorly. Just like the annoying comments on Cinema Sins saying "they just don't understand the movie, the movie I like has no flaws in my eyes! Anyone who says otherwise is stupid." or people on Nostalgia Critic saying "he's bashing my favorite movie for plot holes and poor character development when I loved it as a kid. He's so stupid and bashing." and here like Mr. Enter saying this show is stupid because the jokes suck and he doesn't like it. People are free to dislike whatever they want and people saying "if you don't like it stay out of it" should take their own advice and just leave the video, stop watching it especially after his warning of not liking it, and have no excuse to have stayed knowing it was going to be a negative review.
@amirakitty
@amirakitty 10 жыл бұрын
And now the real problem comes out. "He hates something I and others love and made a video saying why he hates it. Therefore he is wrong. No one should review anything that a large amount of people love in a negative light." That's what I thought.
@batmenace15

I actually generally enjoy Fiw, more than any other abridged series, but he's definitely made some good points. The snowdrop jab made made me chuckle but i didn't even think about weather or not they actually got permission to feature their entire short in an episode. I watched these when they first came out and my sense of humor has changed a lot since then, but i still enjoy parts of the senseless humor in this series witch i mean, they actually put a lot of effort in, editing wise. Not a lot of abridged series' (or at least mlp series) put enough work in it to actually animate their own scenes or write their own songs. This video definitely changed the way I see the series but I'll still enjoy it nonetheless. though if you dislike this series i imagine you must be less fond of UFP:MLP

Okay, you say you enjoy it more than any other abridged/parody series, have you seen DBZ or Sword Art Online Abridged? Because, they are probably the best of the best. They have full teams of professional voice actors, and in my opinion, they're comedy is on point. DBZ Abridged is done by Team Four Star, and has 53 episodes so far, and SAO Abridged is made by Something Witty Entertainment, and currently has 9 episodes. I can't recommend either enough.

Jason Ultimate I wasn't impressed with the DBZ Abridged tbh,, it was pretty long I think. And I don't even like SAO in general so i'd never consider. Anime in general I don't really enjoy, maybe the occasional ona twoa.
@Jason_Altea
@Jason_Altea 8 жыл бұрын
a single twinkie Well, yeah, the DBZ Abridged is going to be long. This is a series parodying a series with 350+ episodes. SAO was only like, 20 episodes long or so. When you have a series THAT long to parody, I'd consider it impressive how far they got in only 54 episodes. But, if you don't like anime, I'm sure there's an abridged series for you somewhere. Practically everything that's fully animated has an abridged series somewhere, so, just keep searching.

I've watched a few episodes and in all honesty I find there are exactly two things to watch FiW for: 1: The music. It's awesome. 2: Sweetie Bot. She's like, the best, most adorable and lovable thing ever. Seriously. They gave a cute character a robotic voice and mannerisms and THAT MADE HER EVEN CUTER. And almost every line out of her mouth is genuinely funny, way funnier than the stuff the other characters say.

***** She's just a robot, because apparently in the world of FiW, robot ponies who don't know they're robots are a thing. But the way they write her is equal parts adorable and hilarious, she's by far the best-written character on the show, and "Neigh, soul sister" is totally worth watching thanks to her.

Honestly, it's good to see someone also thinks FIW is shit. I personally had a bad encounter with Jen (one of the creators) when I posted on tumblr how I didn't like FIW. She responded to my criticism in the most immature way possible. And then half of her fans went to call me butthurt because I called her immaturity out. Fun! Although FIW Twilight has to be one of the most disgusting characters ever, if Griffin and Jen want to do an abridged series, then they should take some pointers from the Mentally Advanced series or LittleKuribo.

The Doctor Whooves joke could've worked as well if the people who weren't familiar to the meme got a bit of a setup. For example they could have made Apple Bloom go: "Omigosh! It's Doctor Whooves-" "I'm American."

TB Tabby Not really, it was in reference to Doctor Whooves, a popuar background character that recieved such nickname because people think he looks a lot like the 10th Doctor (it doesn't help his cutie mark is an hourglass), but I can't blame you for not getting the reference. One of the weak points of FiW is that the creators don't understand not everyone is going to understand all these references they're throwing at us.

I appreciate both you and VoiceOfReason, because I know now that I am not alone. It is never easy to be the one to directly challenge the zeitgeist of popular opinion, since you have inevitably been attacked by the mindless phalanx of dittoheads extolling the virtues of what is, in my frank opinion, irredeemable crap. Let me be clear here: *_I HATE FRIENDSHIP IS WITCHCRAFT._* It isn't the worst abridged series out there (and _yes it fucking is an abridged series; don't even try to argue semantics with me_), but it's still pretty bad. Why is it bad? Here's a list I came up with long before I saw any reviews on it. 1) *The vast majority of jokes **_are not funny_*. To me, FiW's writing has always smacked of "trying too hard". Rainbow Dash's existence is the best example. I know many of FiW's jokes, especially in early episodes, try to make fun of the animation a la classic abridged series like Yugioh Abridged or Sailor Moon Abridged, but it doesn't work. Why? Simple. The animation in MLP is too good to make fun of. That's why _Camraderie_ and _Mentally Advanced_ - whose writers actually knew what they were doing - didn't bother. 2) *The pacing is sluggish*. One of the purposes of a parody series is that much of its humor derives from rapid-fire jokes and quick scene transitions. FiW tends to drag, holding for way too long on their scenes, which robs even jokes that _could_ have worked of their punch. 3) *Most characters are unlikable*. "But," you say, "That's the point! We're _supposed_ to hate them!" Let me echo what Mr.Enter said; there's a difference between being morally reprehensible and being unlikable. Example: _Mentally Advanced_ Twilight - a jaded snarky drunk who's rude to everyone. She's still likeable because (1) we learn her motivations, thus gaining some sympathy for her, (2) she takes abuse in addition to dishing it out, and (3) the targets of her abuse usually deserve it. _Witchcraft_ Twilight is an asshole just for the sake of being an asshole. There's no reason for it, so it's hard to care about her. The fact that she's the main character, and thus the reference point through which we see the world, makes it even worse. The rest of the cast isn't much better, being either shallow Flanderizations of the canon ponies, or bland slates with blander backstories that never get explored to any degree. Does FiW have any likeable characters? Yes! Sweetie-Bot and, to a lesser extent, Spike. 4) *The references are poorly-handled*. I've seen many comments here getting onto Mr.E for missing the joke about Doctor Whooves. I got that joke and found it funny, but I also know that if you're not deep enough into the fandom to know who that pony is and know that he's meant to be English, you're not going to understand the reference. Many jokes in FiW are like that. Example: turning Derpy into a raincloud. That is of course a reference to Derpygate. Here's the problem: MLP is a show with a large number of new and/or less-involved fans (as is the case with any big fandom), and it's still adding fans today. It's been over two years since Derpygate happened. Anyone who wasn't there or hasn't done the research won't get it. That's not the fault of the audience. Jenny & Griffin's (and their followers') response to this seems to be turning their nose up at "the filthy casuals". That attitude is - how shall I put this? - _PRETENTIOUS_. 5) *Jenny Nicholson is a poor voice actress*. I've learned from experience that just because you can do voices doesn't mean you can voice act. One of the biggest parts of comedy is timing, and Jenny has probably the worst comic timing of any VA I've ever heard. She's _so slow_, and the editing makes it even worse. In addition, I find some of her voices - like Pinkie - grating. Her take on Luna is downright offensive. Really, the only voice she _doesn't_ suck at is Twilight, but that's because she doesn't have to stretch the vocal range she doesn't have to pull that voice off. 6) *It is mean-spirited*. Especially later on, FiW gets painful to watch because it becomes obvious just how cruel it is. "Snowblind" is the best example, but that entire episode is just as mean. The episode before it has Cadance killed because of Twi's incestuous desires. The problem is there's _no_ reason to root for Twilight in that scenario... unless you're like Chad Rocco and hold an irrational hatred of Cadance. "But!" you say again, "It's funny _because_ it's so cynical and mean-spirited! You don't get it!" Yes I _do_ get it; we like to laugh at others' misfortune - _schadenfreude_. But you need to remember one thing: meanness is only funny if it's ridiculous (and you're detached from the character), or karmic (i.e. they deserve it). Mel Brooks once said, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger; Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." The retribution must either fit the offence, or be so absurd that you can't _not_ laugh. But the way FiW laughs at its characters is almost at the level of bullies to their prey, especially later on. This complaint actually extends to Jenny & Griffin themselves. I saw some of the things they said to Greg Hoffman (the _Mentally Advanced_ guy) back in the day, and their actions made them come off as total assholes. 7) *The Wah-Wah Trumpet*. Yes, it deserves its own spot on the list. That thing got really old really quick. You don't always notice it the first time, but _boy_ does it stand out on repeated viewings. 8) *_FOALY. FUCKING. MATRIPONY._* Do I even need to explain this one? It's the episode that took me from mildly disliking FiW to outright hating it and hoping its creators get eaten by bears. Oh, and finally... 9) *Jenny & Griffin's fanbase is really fucking annoying*. Proof? Look at the pro-FiW comments on this and VoiceOfReason's videos. Here's a hint, y'all: just because you _say_ a flaw is actually a strength does not make it true. And that's all I got for now. Sorry for the long post.

Another thing I would add (coming off from 5) is that none of the voices are very engaging or funny. In Yugioh Abridged and Naruto Abridged just the voices themselves could make you laugh, whether they were telling a joke or not. As mentioned, most of the voices are bland and/or boring in FIW!

The "I'm American" joke is referencing how when Doctor Who fans watched this show they picked out that pony as a look-a-like to Tennent's Doctor (I concur he looks like a good pony version of Tennent) and then in the Cutie Mark Chronicles we hear his voice and it's not even remotely British. So instead of the canon "No thanks" we hear "I'm American" like a slap to the face of our Doctor Whooves fan works and stuff

People often say "Don't take it so seriously" in response to criticism toward stuff like this. Here's the thing though, we have a REASON for this. We take stuff like FiM seriously because it takes US seriously. We respect FiM because it respects us, because Lauren Faust had respect for her intended audience when she wrote the show to begin with. She made the characters likable so we could relate to them, which got us more emotionally invested in the show. The humor treats us like we have brains instead of acting like we're toddlers who think farting is funny. The writing is intelligent enough to pull us in and make us invested in the scenario instead of just being filler to draw out the episode until something happens. The emotion resonates with us BECAUSE we can relate to these characters and BECAUSE this would affect us if it happened to us personally. Parodying FiM would be fine IF it was done with respect to the source material, but to be a true parody it has to actually connect to the source, even if it's an exaggeration, and isn't mean spirited. Making Celestia a pedophile? That's not funny because child molestation isn't funny, it's a serious and traumatizing issue in real life, and Celestia is meant to be a sympathetic character. Now making her an overly doting mother who makes cookies for everyone and flies down to Ponyville at night to tuck Twilight into bed? THAT would be a parody because it exaggerates existing traits while keeping the character likable. Making Twilight an asshole in FiW isn't a parody because seeing as Twilight is not an asshole in FiM, and is in fact, really nice, it changes the character completely rather than playing up what's already there. The incest thing isn't funny because incest is considered morally wrong and while I do think Megan McCarthy failed in her attempt to make a likable brother figure and I do think Canterlot Wedding was terrible, a parody should still treat the situation with respect. FiW did not treat the situation with respect because it added things that weren't there originally instead of playing with what was already there. Now having Twilight almost annoyingly eager to make friends and reading books to solve every problem? THAT would be closer to parody, as it keeps the character likable. Fluttershy being a cult leader? Again, not a playful exaggeration, but a complete misrepresentation. Fluttershy never talking because she's so shy, and everyone acting like she is? THAT would be closer to parody. Friendship is Witchcraft never plays up what's there while keeping the characters likable, it just flat out makes the characters unlikable. Should we not take this so seriously? Again, the show takes US seriously. We respect the show because it treats US with respect. We respect Lauren Faust because she treats US with respect by giving us quality writing and acting like we actually have brains. Shows like Friendship is Witchcraft, Teen Titans Go, Family Guy, SpongeBob Squarepants seasons 4-8, and 4Kids One Piece have no respect for their viewers, and that is why they are regarded as terrible. SpongeBob seasons 1-3 and past 8, Batman: The Animated Series, Samurai Jack, Samurai Pizza Cats, Animaniacs, Friendship is Magic, and the original Teen Titans have RESPECT for their viewers, and that is why they are considered such great shows.

If evil!FLuttershy was made as if she had a really saccharine personality and was the pushover that canon!Fluttershy is then it could be funny. Like if she was trying to get minons she'd be like "E-Excuse me, is it OK if you're my loyal minion? Pretty please? No? Okay..." I have no idea if this is how she actually acts in FiW, and if it she does then it must suck.

This parody relies heavily on the inconsistencies of the show. everyone abuses spike because in the actual show, everyone abuses spike, it's just never addressed as directly as in witchcraft. the reason why twilight is a dick is because, in the show, twilight can be an insensitive dick. It's tongue in cheek humor rather than slapstick like you seem to assume it needs to be. True, it isn't the funniest, but it still is pretty intelligent and the music is usually pretty well put together and that voice actress has a pretty awesome range for a casual

Darn, the browser crashed as I was making a long-winded post. Point is, Friendship is Witchcraft cannot be accurately assessed as a parody of the show. It is just as much, if not more, a commentary on topical brony topics. Almost everything that seems over-the-top in FiW is meant to act as a realization of the fandom's strawman, save for a few cases, in which it inverts it. Rainbow Dash got no characterization at first in FiM. And early bronies, though at first being drawn to RD's tomboyish nature, realized this and began to rag on her for being undeveloped. FiW's RD is that flanderized version of her made a reality. FiW's Luna is an unflattering version of the "gamer Luna" idea. The Twilight/SA idea is a reference to the disturbingly common non-blood related Brother/sister incest thing that keeps cropping up in anime. As for Snowdrop, the first time I watched the FiW version, I was pissed. Further thought on the topic and a better understanding of the brony community's reaction to the animation made it clear what they were doing: they were making real the common criticism that Snowdrop was simply a cliche and exploitive abuse of the titular character for the sake of feels. I still kid of feel like they went too far with it, though the more I read, the more I feel like Bronies' criticisms did, too. Perhaps if you are viewing this as an independent show or purely as a parody of FiM, all of Enter's criticisms hold true, but if there's anything my student loans have taught me, it's that no creative output should be taken without sufficient context. Well, that and that not even death is a viable means of averting debt.

I honestly feel torn apart on how I feel about Friendship is Witchcraft. Mr. Enter and VoiceofReason both hate it, while I love this series to shreds. Pretty much every joke had me laugh very loudly, but even I'm curious as to why others don't have that same reaction. Like, yeah, what exactly is it about it that's making ME laugh so hard, but not everyone else? Parody and satire are by far my favorite forms of humor, and even the repetitive jokes made me laugh. The Snowblind part where she says "That's because I'm blind, you jackass" had me laughing extremely hard. Twilight and Shining Armor's incest story also made me laugh because of how...Awkward it was and how it felt rather in bad taste. The running gags had me laughing every time because I can see that they do it so repetitively to make fun of them. I do love the Mentally Advanced Series too, but is it just that I have a "bad" sense of humor per se? I just. Kinda can't see where everyone else's dislike for it comes from. D: And is there such a thing as a "bad" sense of humor? If this comment doesn't make sense or seems...Unfocused, I'm very sorry. It's 2 in the morning and I haven't slept much. :P

To an extent, I can agree with you. I've watched all the FiW episodes, and, yeah, I never really laughed that much. Thing is, I never really looked at it as a laugh-out-loud parody, I think the writers were trying to be more witty than funny. And sadly, yes, they don't always hit the mark. It's a weird mix of obvious/subtle jokes and references. Plus, I fully agree about the 'wah wah wah' sound. It annoyed me too. -_- Also I think it was trying to be borderline grimdark comedy, which is a very tricky style to bring to life. Because of this, I end up hating most of the characters (though I do love Sweetie Bot and Pinkie!). All in all, it's a very ambitious fan series, but they are definitely not perfect, and I don't think they fully deserve such a high amount of recognition. Now don't get me wrong, I'm glad I saw all the episodes thus far, and I'll probably check out any future works when they come, it's just not a favorite. On the bright side, I'd prefer to watch all their episodes than see Collegehumor's short My Little Brony (Seriously! That's such a disgusting video!).

Hmm. Well, even though I don't agree, I do respect your opinion on this. It's perfectly fine if you don't enjoy the series or personally find it funny. Nothing is ever appealing to every single person, and, like everything, it does indeed have its flaws. However, I myself would like to offer my own opinion on your critique/review of FiW. And of course, it's simply another person's opinion, and thus, should be treated as normally as any other. Although I can agree with you that the entire series overall isn't very 'laugh-out-loud' funny (I find it more humorous, where I can hear and like a joke without actually laughing at it) I did find SOME of the criticisms given here to be rather nit-picky, or missing the point on certain aspects of the series' humor or 'plot' (if you wanna call it one). I'll just go in order as best I can: 1. You criticize the characters negatively for being 'one-note assholes'. Now, it's fine if you just didn't enjoy them, but that doesn't necessarily show flaw in the series itself. The humor that they went for was to take the small flaws in the real-show characters and exaggerate them, thus, darkly parodying the real-show characters' development. Instead of them learning how to better themselves and adapting to newly learned morals, these versions keep their negative traits, and even make them worse as it progresses, parodying the whole 'bad-to-good' thing the real show has. 1.5. "The Dash 'pointing out' her lack of a character thing didn't make it funny.'' I'm not certain, but I think they were saying that the actual show's Dash is shallow and not very dynamic. Aside from how they explore that aspect throughout the series with other jokes, that specific line is not trying to 'point out' flaw within FiW itself, but the actual show. 2. The reason why it's humorous that Spike is made a poorly-treated slave is because how he truly doesn't deserve it at all. He's kind and innocent, but is treated so poorly and discriminated against anyway, which I found funny. It wouldn't be funny if Spike was treated badly like he is in FiW because he's mean and unlikable. It would just be...justifiable. Satisfying maybe, but not really humorous. 3. You criticized their use of running gags, (for this point, namely the 'eye-candy' one) in that they either did it poorly, or did it too much. I guess this really falls under personal opinion, but I really don't understand why that bothers you and other critics of the series so much. It's fine if you didn't find it funny, but it's not because of sloppy writing. It's just to make the viewer scratch their head because A)It's just doing what all running gags do and B)Is humorous in that 'eye-candy' describes someone/something that is attractive or good-looking, and thus is absurd because they use it completely out of that context. It can be looked at as an absurdist-humor joke. 4. You criticize when the characters simply say what they're doing mindlessly ('Look, it's a thing, laugh dammit.) I really don't think that them just saying it was supposed to be really be funny. I guess it can be found funny that they're just SAYING what they're doing, because it's absurd, but it's most likely just because the writers didn't know what else to have them say there. But instead of leaving them silent, they just narrate their actions. Again, not all that funny, but not really flawed writing. 5. The 'Dr. Whooves' horse saying that he's American isn't a joke about Americans not liking apples. It was a reference to the Internet character of him (called affectionately Dr. Whooves) being British and speaking with a British accent. 6. The ending 'letters to Celestia' weren't necessarily 'missing the point' of parodies. They simply miss the entire point of what the 'actual moral' of the episode should have been, and thus, are about something completely silly and irrelevant, like, for example, a ball bouncing really high. The joke you made with it was fine, but just because the series did it differently than how you would've done it doesn't mean they missed the point of anything. 7. You mocked the whole 'incest' episode because you thought it was creepy. That's fine if you thought it was creepy (in fact, it was likely put there FOR creeping viewers out) but there's nothing wrong with this kind of 'creepiness' because it's not 'gross-out' humor like you found it to be. It didn't show Twilight and her brother having sex or even joking about them having sex, only that Twilight was in love with her 'adoptive' brother, and selfishly wanted to ruin his engagement. Actual sexual intercourse between the two are never mentioned, so it doesn't really make it 'bodily' humor. And the 'humor' of it came from the series taking the real-show's Twilight sibling-level affection and magnifying it to romantic levels, as MAGNIFYING is what this series does often to certain aspects of the Hub show. 8. You criticized how FiW made fun of "Snowdrop", rather than playfully mocking/parodying it. I can understand the whole 'showing us the whole thing' part being unnecessary, but I don't really see how just 'making fun' of the film is a flaw of the series. I can understand if you felt they went too far in it's mocking, and didn't find it funny, but that doesn't necessarily mean that that's a flaw. Sometimes humor CAN be cruel and still work, and I thought it did there. If you didn't, again, fine. But that's just personal opinion. Other than these points, I found your criticisms of the characters themselves to be valid, as well as your points on some of the humor just not being your cup of tea. I myself am not really a fan of the actual show, but did like this parody series (not enjoying the actual show may have something to do with it). Conversely, perhaps your and Mr. Enter's love of the actual show contributed for your dislike of the parody series, which heavily differs from each other. Either way, I still respect that you don't enjoy the series overall, but hope that if you read this, you may give it a little more credit.

As someone who very much so enjoys the show, I can answer your question. I enjoy this kind of humor. I believe Friendship is Witchcraft is a series the revolves around two types of humor - shock and anti-humor. And I love anti-humor. I understand why you don't enjoy it, a series that does nothing but anti-humor does seem ridiculous. I feel like it's just a hit-or-miss kind of comedy and because FiW does it to such a degree, it's a huge hit-or-miss. I'm not saying that you must not like anti-humor, I'm just saying that you don't enjoy the way that it was put together, and that's understandable. Just know that I like it for all of the reasons you don't, and in the end, it's all a matter of opinion.

I'm sorry TheMysteriousMrEnter, but I can't see your points of contention as being actual negative points towards the series. The Wah Wah trumpet was not intrusive. Just because it is reused (I'm using this word very loosely) does NOT mean it's an intrusive sound. I dislike this review as well as Voice of Reason's review for the exact same reason. I think it's very clear (Based on the fact that you use every facet of his review in yours) that you were rather inspired or directly copying his point of view simply because you agree with him. Let me tell you why and when exactly your review is stupid on two specific areas of the video: • 0:12 - Then why the fuck did you make a video about it? • 0:31 - How ironic, you blatantly took the wrong points he explained and made a futile attempt to elaborate them. • 1:00 - I think including a song that every fan of FiW who watched this episode enjoys isn't really driving your point home. This one is just my opinion. Also you don't have the right to put people down for their desires. That makes you look like a self-entitled prick and this point alone made me cringe. • 1:50 - She wasn't pointing out her problems, she was embracing the opposite of applejack's statement. • 2:10 - Entitlement at the point of no return. • 2:18 - This screen points out exactly what was wrong with your previous statement, I don't need to reiterate it. That was poorly edited. • 2:22 - You're saying you'd rather fluttershy be a masochist than an evil character? That's the rank smell of an opinion with no elaboration. • 2:30 - Read my note on 1:00. Let's skip a little bit to the worst part of the video. • 4:30 - It isn't. That's a stupid point to bring up. Is it because you dislike his slight accent? • 4:55 - Taken directly from VoR's review. • 5:08 - Really? That's the stupidest comparison yet. Bubsy fell flat because it tried to tell jokes, that's literally it. Admittedly FiW tried to do something similar but it wasn't as a deliberate attempt at being bad but a stab at satire. Those are in completely different genres and Bubsy is obnoxious. If you think Bubsy is better you really need to go to an English class and understand references and allusions. • 5:13 - It took me five seconds to find another fucking fault with your review. I can already tell you're doing a magnificent job identifying references. "Eye Candy" has several different meanings but the reason it started getting used is because the parasprites look like candies with eyes. Even if it's not that funny, being blatantly ignorant to the context and saying the joke doesn't make sense is getting really old. I facepalmed in both yours and VoR's review. • 5:25 - This is the only point of the video I actually agree with you. But still, they are not professional and don't try to be in any stretch of the word. I'm not going to write more. I've wasted enough time already writing this and only as an angry fist wave because all of the reviewers hate the series for the exact same reasons.

***** The trumpet used in the series wasn't annoying. It was distributed fairly and if you didn't go into the series with a negative view you'd see why it's not intrusive. It's not used as exaggeratedly often as the reviewer points out and it gets really annoying when they point it out 12 times and think they are persuading anyone. The 40 second joke that was in the series was meant to be backstory and ironic to the plot. Young people will find that scene obviously annoying because they don't understand dramatic purpose. In this case, that joke could have been made to lengthen the fact that fluttershy disliked her father but was still there explaining it to them. But of course, when I tell people the meaning to jokes they rather shrug it off or say I'm wrong, because they didn't investigate enough. So re watch that scene and try finding the purpose instead of saying it's annoying outright with no evidence or elaboration. And if you reply saying "Yes it is" again without elaborating I will stop responding to this comment thread, because I spent a lot of time elaborating my points.

' "Eye Candy" has several different meanings but the reason it started getting used is because the parasprites look like candies with eyes.' Yes, but you shouldn't be distracted by the jokes or references if you don't understand them, like he said about Fluttershy being dressed as a tree. References shouldn't be used in Parody if they are distracting to anyone who doesn't know them, because then they're not funny, just like the Doctor Whooves joke.

Boo Five That's fair, I guess. Though in it's defense one is not supposed to be concentrated on seeing the actual product at hand, that IS the point of a parody (Unless I'm getting your point wrong; in which case that is correct). The point of this series is to be distracting. That could be considered a fault on it's part but it's to build up the irony that this series stacks. Not being funny is why I'm spending so much time laughing at dumb ass comments who don't get jokes IMO. w/e. I think this is a topic way beyond my scope, because as you could have probably easily of told I'm not very good at elaborating while showing my points and not offending anyone. Take it as you will, but I think mostly every joke lined up in this series was to near perfection and the first time that I watched the series I never laughed so hard in my life. The funny thing is, I got less than half of the jokes the video told. It took me watching the saga like 15 times to see all the jokes. Might make me stupid but I had fun trying to identify with it and when seeing videos of people's reviews against the series being that they simply don't get jokes that aren't even allusions to cryptic things I guess offends me in a personal manner. Have fun watching what you want to watch; I don't care what it is. I won't rag on about this topic anymore. Ciao!

I think the reason I Hate Twilight in this "Parody" Series: She's EVIL!!! With capital Letters! She manipulates everyone and tries to overthrow the government. She even says in the song that she MURDERS Shining Armor's girlfriends. She is A PSYCHOPATH with a desire for her brother, and worse, it's not even well written. They could of made a good good story with it, but they turn her EVIL. I can't even watch the Wedding Episodes anymore because of how they wrote it, and like I said, the could've made it (at least) interesting!

I mostly watched FiW because I had nothing better to do, and I kept having a... "friend' recommend it to me. The most enjoyment I got was Gypsy Pinkie and her songs, as well as Sweetie Bot. Mostly because they were the only likable characters to me. Actually I much prefer Mentally Advanced and Rainbow Dash Presents than FiW, because at least the characters are a whole lot more memorable.

Yeah, I don't agree. I don't really like the series either, from what little I've seen of it, but I understand where the laughs come from. If the biggest issue is, "it's not funny" then it's just going to turn into a "it's subjective" argument. I understand there is an art to humor, but if people are laughing, you can't really bring up that point. But I understand. You were asked to do this review. You didn't want to. I can't really make you hide reasons why you don't like it.

And in this episode, the unfortunate undercurrent running through many of his earlier episodes comes to the fore: I legitimately feel that this reviewer is ill suited to reviewing any sort of comedy on account of being a TOTAL wet blanket. Notice how a huge proportion of his "admirable animations" are sappy drama episodes and relatively few are comedies. I understand that humor is very subjective, but I'd like to see a little more acknowledgement on the part of MrEnter that he is VERY quick on the trigger when it comes to declaring that a particular joke has 'crossed the line' or dismissing a joke because it is "cruel". Quite often, the holier-than-thou tone makes me wonder if I've ended up on the Parents Television Council's youtube channel or something. In particular, this often-repeated mantra of "horrible things happening to a character is only funny if they deserve it" is hardly the universal comedic law he presents it as.

Well as most people, I have a lot of criticism towards your criticism, I'm not going to cover everything, I'm just going to cover what stood out to me. The humor is primarily a form of internet humor, A joke doesn't have to be contextual, Jontron does it a lot, and it's hilarious, that's part of the reason why it's funny, it's out of context, and was quick paced which made it funny. If you haven't watched him or anyone from HiddenBlock I'd suggest doing so, and I think you'll see what they were going for, although they have literally nothing in common, I'm simply just pointing out the internet humor, it may just not be for you though. But it was going for a more or less Abridged series approach but it is a parody. Incest isn't wrong, and I have a inarguable point on why. Being gay isn't and is a choice. But, gay not being a "choice" in the matter, matters little. If you can't control what you are into, or what you love when you are born, then it's perfectly normal to be into incest, like having natural blonde hair or natural hazel hair, you can't control it. I always love the hypocrisy from people who say being gay isn't a choice, but then say being into incest is wrong. You can't control being gay, and you can't control what you're into in general, this includes Incest. The obvious change of personality part seems meh to me. Yeah they just flipped it around which is generic, but it honestly doesn't bother me, I'm partly a hipster, I will associate with things that are popular and will not put it down for being popular, but I mostly go with the underdog of opinions, or the lesser known (Insert something here) I despise generic anything, but the problem I'm seeing here is that no one else has done it yet. Or at least not enough for it to be called "generic" Here's an example, Dead Rising. Oh wow Dead Rising let's you use everything as a weapon against zombies, wow no one's ever thought of that before. But it's never even been done before. Dead Rising 2: Oh wow now I can combine weapons so unoriginal. Once more, never been done before, or at least not in this style, with these enemies in this scenario, in the area. While I do agree I think it would've been better if they decided to go for a more original personality, the one they got doesn't really bother me. All this and more is my opinion, and while I do disagree with you're opinion, it's perfectly fine to me, I can see why someone wouldn't like it. Thank you for being honest with your opinion rather than just stay quiet or lie about it. I really do appreciate it and the work you put into your videos.

PrincesTomboy While I can see where some people would find Incest wrong or creepy, what I never understand is the "manner" of creepy they treat it as. In my opinion, incest is something that, in and of itself alone, can only be wrong on a mental level. Technically speaking, the sex taking place isn't any different than between two people of no relation. So while I understand being disturbed for some people, I never understand why it's vomiting type jokes. Uncomfortable mentally to watch, but not PHYSICALLY sickening.

You're comparing apples and oranges here. i hate to defend FiW but, Enter, the part where the brown colt says "i'm American" is a reference to the fact that fans of the show who were also fans of the British Sci-Fi 'Doctor Who' were disappointed when the background pony ,they named Doctor Whooves (the brown colt) after 'Doctor Who' because of the fact that his design looked similar to David Tennant (the actor who played the Doctor), had an American accent instead of a British accent like the Doctor had in the show. it was a wasted opportunity for an awesome reference that many fans were disappointed about. then again you probably didn't know about that, and that's alright. besides, it's killing me on the inside a little knowing i just defended FiW for a mostly thought through joke.

As it happens, there's a scene from Animaniacs that sums up why I dislike so much of the "inside humour" in FiW: Scratchensniff: Well, okay, that's not really a joke, is it? You see, because it makes no sense. Wakko: It does if you know Max. Scratchensniff: But I don't know Max! Wakko: If you did, you'd be laughing! And that's pretty much the philosophy behind most of FiW's reference humour. Unless you've done your homework before watching, you're going to be left confused by it. Needless to say, that's not a good thing.

Don't think of FiW as a parody of FiM but as a parody of the FiM fandom, then I think it can be appreciated more easily. Like making Fluttershy murderous makes the concept ridiculous, which mocks the fandom's tendency to make FiM as dark and twisted as possible in fanworks (ie Pinkamena and creepypastas). I think the whole idea of all the subplots useless was to mock the fact that fans often want FiM to be a huge narrative when it just isn't meant to work that way (which is why some of the best episodes have the dullest sounding plots). The Rainbow Dash jokes were about how fans often present her as a one-note embodiment of "radical" self-absorption. The Dr. Whooves joke about apples and the Bon Bon watering flowers jokes were meant to make fun of the fandom's obsession with background ponies. In other words, I think you just missed the point of FiW. Even so, FiW is humor-driven and if the humor isn't your taste then I understand it won't be enjoyable.

I think you missed the humor of this show. You're treating it as if it is its own thing. It's giving a new dark context to already made cheery episodes. It's kinda like those 60s Spider-Man memes where he's standing in front of a fire and the caption reads "That'll teach those orphans a lesson!" If that's not your type of humor, fine, but it's pretty easy to find why this show can be hilarious at times. A perfect example of the very meta humor is the joke at the beginning of episode 8 where Twilight is reading a letter from the queen and it says "Pinkie Pie your dialog will be cut for time" and it cuts to Pinkie only to cut away from her 2 seconds later. Or the joke right after that where she gives the rest of the characters very minor, easy jobs like the one for Rainbow "don't break anything" then give Rarity the job of "literally everything else." We know that Rarity is very reliable in the show, and is a hard worker, so giving her "literally everything else" is a very funny extreme. By the way, this is all coming from someone that does not enjoy the regular show, and thinks it's just another boring kids show with plot lines I've seen a thousand times.

I have a few questions. I'm not a fan of this franchise, and I am not trolling or trying to be rude. All of these questions are in earnest. What is the appeal for guys in the My Little Pony series? Why is it so popular among teenage guys and men in their 20s to 30s? I did give this show a chance. I watched a few episodes, but I didn't find any appeal in it. I barely even remember them, it held my attention so little. all I remember is that pinkie pie cloned herself with a magic pond or something. I can understand how it might pander to an individual, but how did it attract such a huge male following? What does it have that attracts guys? Let's throw out that it was originally a "Girls' show" (I say that because in all the commercials for the merchandise, it's clearly targeted at the female demographic). Being a "Girls' show" means nothing. There are some "Girls' shows" that I like, such as Kim Possible, Power Puff Girls, and My Life as a Teenage Robot. But they all have appeal that I can see guys liking. Kim Possible is a secret agent, and has a lovable doofus sidekick. And they fight giant robots. Power puff girls are super heroes who beat up bad guys. Lots of violence and action..... and they fight giant robots. My Life as a Teenage Robot, she's a robot who fights crime.... and other robots. So, I can see a guy liking those, but why do they like this show? Again, I'm not trying to be rude, I'm not trolling, I'm being legitimate in my questions. I do not understand. And for those about to say "If you don't like it, why did you comment on this video?" It's because I've subscribed to Mr. Enter, and I thought this video of his would be a good place to get some answers. I didn't even watch the review. So, to any male fans of the show reading this, why do YOU like this show? What was the appeal that I apparently missed?

Well it varies from person to person, but I'll give you my reasons for liking the show: 1. On a technical level, it's brilliantly made. Entirely made in Flash, and occasionally some After Effects work or some CGI worked in, and looks great for it. The animation is way above many cartoons these days, up there with the best animations on TV at the moment (Not including anime, of course). And speaking as an animator myself, I can attest to how difficult alot of their animation is (Seriously, try doing cel-shaded animation or a depth-of-field shift in Flash, it ain't easy!) The voice-acting is all top-notch, the music is catchy, the designs are pleasant to look at, the sound effects fit, the characters are well designed, the whole thing just looks like genuine effort was put into it. Which is more than can be said for most previous MLP stuff. Speaking of which... 2. It's surprisingly good. I won't deny it's hardly a perfect show. But given its source material, and MLP's previous track record with animation, it's surprising how good it is. The previous generations ranged from mediocre to insufferable, so the fact that this newest incarnation turned out to be genuinely good, is frankly a miracle. I think that's what attracted so much initial attention, from people saying "Hey, this is actually kinda good... didn't see that coming." 3. It actually has story and conflict that makes sense. Each episode has an actual dilemma that makes sense in the context of the characters and setting (Both of which are well defined and relatively consistent). It's not just random shit happening or non-conflicts like so many other shows. And many of them are relatable to people: Being stuck between choosing two friends, wanting to become more assertive and going too far, not being confident in one's own talent, not wanting to use ones talent for fear of showing off. Just because they're conflicts that have been done before, doesn't make them any less relevant. 4. It realises that what it is is cheesy, cliched and easy to make fun of, but it just doesn't care. Yeah, the very idea of the 'magic of friendship' being a literal concept in this show (To the point of being able to weaponise it) is cheesy and ridiculous, but they don't wink at the camera or make jokes about how cheesy it is, they just roll with it and play it straight. Kinda like Pacific Rim or Flash Gordon, it just doesn't care how silly it is. They want a story about swarming insects that can be controlled by polka music? Done. They want a story about a magic comic that transports people into a superhero world? Done. They want a pony who can fly so fast she creates a sonic-boom with a rainbow-coloured shockwave? Done. 5. The characters are well written and likeable. A matter of opinion, but over the course of the series, these 6 main characters have become very fleshed out, interesting and appealing characters. They have interests, they have skills, they have flaws (That actually relate to the rest of their personality, they're not just token flaws thrown in to keep them from being called Mary Sues), they have interesting backstories, and often they manage to subvert the common tropes. Like Rarity, the fashionista. You expect her to be the stuck-up fashion-obsesed diva who spends all her money on pretty clothes, right? Well, she is a bit stuck-up and fashion-obsessed, but that's because she's actually a fashion-designer. She's a working artist who takes paid commissions and does actual hard work that she is passionate about. And her stories more often revolve around her as an artist than as a fashionista. 6. It is surprisingly deep in its worldbuilding. Throughout the series and the spinoff material like the books and comics, the setting has expanded and been examined in pretty good detail, things like locations, creatures, towns, hazards, the history and mythology of the land, the literature they read, how their magic works, how the setting in general works. Heck, there's even an official map of Equestria available, as well as official real-life reproductions of the literature they read in the show (You can go out and actually buy and read real-life Daring Do novels, just like the ones in the show. And they ain't half bad as adventure books go)! I'm always a huge sucker for worldbuilding in media, so this is like gold for me. 7. It's just plain nice. I think in this day and age, people are growing bored of dark-n-edgy. People are getting bored of it in videogames, movies, and cartoons, that have gritty anti-hero characters with lots of violence and brooding and darkness. It's probably one reason shows like Gravity Falls or Adventure Time are so popular, or why Marvel is doing so much better than DC at the moment, Marvel knows how to embrace the over-the-top craziness and fun of comics and superhero movies, while DC seems to be trying to be the grim, serious comic company. And I think that's one reason MLP is so popular, it's a show that isn't trying to be cynical or pessimistic or gritty. It's just trying to be a straight up idealistic high-fantasy fun. And in an economic, political and environmental reality that is a shitty as the one we Gen-Y folk are stuck with, a bit of escapism to a setting based around love, friendship and altruism is just what we need. And the morals and lessons it teaches are just as useful. Yeah, most of them are the kinds of things taught about friendship and being a good person in most stories or morality plays, but they're still perfectly relevant. So yeah, that's the gist of why I personally like the show.

Well, the reason _I_ like the series is because of what I found in my favorite episode, Twilight's Kingdom, the season 4 finale. People are blinded by the lasers and nuclear explosions in that fight with the soul-sucking demon centaur that they hardly realize what's going on. The sheer level of emotion being portrayed here! I mean, ONLY ONE of the two comic relief characters gets ONLY ONE joke after the unfortunate event that transpired that episode, and that's IT, and it isn't even in the same act (it's divided by a commercial break)! It knows how to create a moment and not ruin it for comedic purposes, which -Family Guy- -The Simpsons- -Spongebob Squarepants- -Pokemon?- *every* cartoon series nowadays is guilty of. When it wants to be sad, it's downright depressing. When it wants to be creepy, it goes with twitches and full-on insanity! When it wants to be heartwarming, it makes sure it's enough to make a grown man cry. It literally shifted its primary focus toward entertaining the audience watching, when all it used to be is *BUY OUR TOYS!!!* It's still a toy commercial, but if it stayed true to that and nothing else, we'd probably be in generation 5 by now, but we're not. We're still in our beloved G4, and that's why the series is so great! They're aware we're watching and they won't let it end. Heck, we even have 5 MORE YEARS *_PROMISED!_* They're not going to end the series anytime soon, all because we love the series! I'm not sure I know of any other series that does this for their fans. I mean, even SEGA tried to please the Classic Sonic fans, and when they got what they wanted, what did they do? They turned around and gave us Sonic Lost World (which is... not terrible) and Sonic Boom (which I haven't played yet, but let me tell you the characters look RIDICULOUS)! Not exactly pleasing those Classic Sonic fans, now are you SEGA? My Little Pony is different in that it constantly aims to please its audience, with somewhat mixed results sometimes, but that's not the point! The point is it _tries!_ And taking into account what I said earlier about emotion... It's easy to see why this show grew so popular!

Both of you make very compelling arguments about why this show is good. It may not be my cup of tea, mostly because of the setting, and, let's be honest here, it IS a bit girly. With names like "Pinkie-pie" "Twilight Sparkle" (you can blame Edward Cullen for taht word being an automatic turnoff) and things of that nature, it's a little TOO cutesy for my tastes for something that's not in an anime like Pokemon or Digimon, but then, Pokemon and Digimon don't make that the main focus. I know next to nothing about ANY of this except what little i've heard from friends, but as far as how it's progressed from it's roots to now, it sounds like G1 Transformers progressing to Beast Wars. Memorable characters, to be sure, but not much development, just robots with pretty one-sided personalities fighting eachother to make boys want the figures. Then, Beast Wars. Lots of internal conflict, much deeper character development, significantly less characters, no recolor characters just to sell another toy (at least in the show, there were alternate colors for other stores and re releases), and moments when you legitimately want to break down and cry because your favorite character gets killed off. Talkin' about Dinobot here. So, over all, I think I understand a bit better now, but I don't see myself liking the show any time soon, if ever, but there's nothing wrong with others liking it. It's just not my thing. I'm more into giant robots, anime, scifi, and adventure fantasy like The Legend of Zelda. A world inhabited by talking ponies just doesn't strike my fancy. Thank you both for your detailed explanations, and have a happy Thanksgiving.

Hey no worries dude. Just happy to see someone asking the question "Why is this so popular?" in an unbiased and genuinely curious way, as opposed to "OMG, this show sucks, why do people like it?!" kinda way. And kudos for actually trying it out for yourself before deciding it wasn't your thing. You'd be surprised how many people write it off as crap without watching a single episode. Still, happy to be of some help, and a good thanksgiving to you too.

URreadingmyaccname Uh, calling sweetie bot's characterization as "beep boop" is extremely unfair. I admittedly ahven't seen the mentally advanced series so I can't say how she compares to thrackerzod, but Sweetie Bot does have character and is definitely the best, most likable, and funniest character in all of FiW.
