Sorry this video is so late. First there was an unforeseen delay, then I was sick for 2 weeks, then when I finally got it uploaded, it was copyright claimed and blocked. But at long last, it's finally public! Hope you guys like it. Also, are there any other mythology movies or shows you'd like me to review?

I did the same with The Outsiders in middle school XD I couldn't be bothered with the book so did my best to just watch and remember the movie XD In my high school class, we had the complete opposite XD It was an English class and had to be the start of the year because it was very early on; I'm talking first weeks of September early. We were doing a whole like- week or two on Greek mythology. Making posters of certain Gods/Goddesses, reading excerpts from the myths and stories, so on; and the last day(s) of it, we were watching this movie. Now, I haven't read the books prior to seeing the movie so I absolutely do not mind this movie and it's a guilty pleasure of mine (Can't stand the second one). But we were given a 100-or-so-question packet to answer along with watching the movie. Teachers wanted to make sure students were paying attention because it wasn't a free period. I HAVE this movie on DVD and had seen it *so* many times before watching it in this class... I had the packet done within the first damn opening credits. I got to kick back and just *enjoy* a movie in class XD

@@lorenzoromito7735 Uhhh, Poseidon being a good father and a good person all around ? Aphrodite being mild-mannered ? Artemis being nice and friendly ? The Olympians in general being either good people or morally neutralc? None of these things are even close to mythologically accurate. The gods of Olympus were either neutral but quick to curse or kill you for something silly (that'd be Dyonisus, Artemis, and even Athena who is not without blame), or downright full on evil by today's standards (Zeus, Poseidon, Apollo...). Basically, excluding a few titans such as Prometheus, Hades was the only divine being who was genuinely kind-hearted and helpful to mortals, as even his wife Persephone was more scary and violent than him Cx

I hated how in the movie they said Hades wanted a war. In the books, Hades DIDN'T want a war because the underworld was getting extremely full. He didn’t want any more dead people. And he complained about how he used to be a rich god, but then he had to spend all his money on things like paying people and upgrading the underworld. It completely took away from Hades' backstory and I really disliked that. They made him evil in the movie, but in the book he was really just misunderstood.

Annabeth: "I'm the daughter of the goddess of wisdom and battle strategies". Proceeds to take off her helmet, a armour piece guardian one of the most vital areas of the body, right before she starts fighting. Also, if Percy had been the one to fly up to get the pearl, and around during the hydra fight, in the book, Zeus would have sent him smacking down towards the earth/ground again within seconds. And I really liked that Riordan didn't just jump to making Hades the bad guy, based on the one fact that he's the god of the underworld. That doesn't automatically make him evil, and it was so refreshing to see, expecially since Hades is actually easily one of the most liked characters in the panteon (expecially between him and his brothers).

Having recently listened to the Lighting Thief musical it's remarkable how much more loyal to book it is to the book despite having a similar runtime. It's not a one to one adaptation by any means, it's very condensed. But it understands that for all the talk of gods and monsters, it's a story about kids with a lot of real life issues exploring the drawbacks and benefits of them in a fantastical setting. You get cool powers because your parent is a god, but because of that your parent can't be a parent because they're off busy controlling the weather, like a real life parent busy with their job. This movie keeps the power fantasy without adding the nuances that make it relatable.

Did anybody else notice that in the second book, when Tyson couldn’t enter Camp, Annabeth goes “I, Annabeth Chase, let Tyson into Camp” or something similar. I think Uncle Rick made sure Grover was unconscious when he, Percy and Sally tried to get into camp in the first book, otherwise Grover could have said the line, Sally wouldn’t have been taken, and thus removing half the plot. (Percy obviously didn’t know he could do this, naturally.) It annoys me so much that in the movie, Grover was perfectly fine but didn’t do ANYTHING to save Sally or help Percy fight the Minotaur, he just stood inside the borderline looking panicked. But no, it’s all “I’m sorry, Perc. I did everything I could.” ARGH. Also, in the movies, why on earth is Grover always so shocked about Greek mythology stuff??? Mate, YOU’RE PART OF IT.

Chris Columbus was a dangerous choice as director for this, because he was actually for aging up the Harry Potter characters as well. When they were first making that movie, he wanted them to all be 16 so they would be 'easier to direct'. It was only when JKR and the studio people put their foot down, and rightly so, that they gave up on that and just dealt with the children's acting by editing the heck out of the films to get what good bits of acting he could. Clearly he got his way with Percy Jackson, and it suffered so heavily for it.

My biggest problem with Grover in the movies (that very much don’t exist) is that they made the character black so they could say, “look, diversity!” while relegating him to the stereotypical black sidekick trope of “funny black guy who quips and says one liners and not much else.”Essentially they tried to “improve the story by adding diversity and instead ruined it with their own biases cause gods forbid a black character have their own plot development! Black Grover would have been such a cool thing and made sense since Grover’s defining feature is curly hair. Annabeth is ruined by trying to combine her into two characters, herself and Clarrise.

Speaking of Book!Hades, two things: 1) when it comes to his appearance, Percy noted that he was the first god who struck him as "godlike", describing him being lithe and graceful "like a panther". 2) when it comes to personality, Book!Hades is fed up, overworked and outraged. He straight up starts a rant how he used to be a rich god, but he has constant expenses for more security and how he doesn't need to conquer the mortal world because he has so much work already with the lines of people that constantly die. Then Percy opens his motor mouth to talk about getting Charon a raise which prompts another mini rant from Hades. I actually liked that in the books. The idea that this seemingly unflappable, regal god is so offended and fed up with unjust accusations that he goes on a rant in front of demigods, one of which being Poseidon's spawn, was both horrifyingly sad and frankly amusing. And although I didn't mind the movie Underworld, the Book one was better, because not only do they have to go through the fields of punishment and the pit to Tartarus to get to Hades's castle, but also they get glimpses of the Fields of Asphodel and Elysium as well. And once they reach said palace, Percy describes it as "dark reflection of Olympus". Again, showing another hint of Hades's bitterness and loneliness for being an outcast. Also, while Persephone might not have some teleporting pearls to give to the trio, you know what she does have and the trio took a glimpse at on their way to Hades? Persephone's garden. Seriously, it was one of the coolest places in the Underworld, with trees that grow gemstones, pomegranate trees and statues from Aunty Em's Emporium. It just added to the wonder of the Underworld that Riordan cooked up, a bit of Persephone's influence in an otherwise Hades design. The movies went for the cliche fire and brimstone Underworld with the Styx tacked on. Honestly, didn't mean to rant, but honestly, the book portrayal of the Underworld and Hades was so magical and the movie went and massacred that image with cliches.

"The source material is successful because it's good! Why don't you take what's good and put it on the screen, instead of replacing it with stuff we are tired off?" That is such an accurate take on modern films (2010 onward). These films and lately TV shows almost all start with a very successful series of books, comics or video games, which are famous because they're unique, different, risky...then studios decide "Too unique, more conformity", "Too different, people will be confused", "Too risky, we won't make a 20x profit"...which is funny because they replace everything unique with every cliche people outside the US like myself get a laugh out of guessing in mediocre films. It's also hilarious that in making the film safer, more broadly appealing, it loses 90% of the profits it would've had because...well, we saw this film 5, 10, 20, 40 years ago, nothing's changed except the effects when you rely on cliches. Serious, tell me a major difference between Percy and Perseus besides one being older, one having winged shoes instead of pegasus, the different fathers and being a stubborn dick at times? (Percy Jackson and Clash of the Titans). They also both get a mystical sword that folds neatly into just a handle/a pen, a badass shield of some sort, a means of flight, their parents get attacked (Percy's mom and Perseus' adopted family).

One of my favorite parts in the book was when Luke was teaching about swordsmanship and techniques. The move he teaches is important to the plot because it was used on him. Naturally he shows them how to do it then he starts sparring with Percy. A few moments before Percy had splashed himself with water to cool himself off. This rejuvenates him and allows him to pull off the difficult disarming move on Luke, who mind you is among if not the best swordsman at the camp. Plus the moment hints at Percy's father and his powers. In the movie that's all wasted on a stupid sword fight with Annabeth. Who in the books doesn't use swords instead using knives and daggers, because she does not fight physically. Her strength comes from her mind not her physical power. This makes her more of a badass because she can beat her opponents without engaging them in combat, instead she'll defeat them with strategy and tactics, just like her mother.

She's taking care of Percy, saying how he's the one, because of a prophecy that if I remember was about her finally going on a quest. They were awkward at first, but as their relationship grew it naturally evolved to love. It was cute. Plus she has history with Grover and Chiron, an interesting relationship with her family and all of that gets thrown out to make her a plain character like most female teen movie characters.

@@ethancooper1560 The Satan depicted in the Bible isn't lord over Hell. Hell was made for him and his hosts to be cast into and suffer for all eternity for their rebellion against God, then man sinned and so man is also doomed to eternal damnation but then God sent his one and only son so that whoever believes in Him will not die (eternal death), but have eternal life (gospel of Jon, chapter 3:16). Satan ruling Hell is not a Christian fact, it's a popularized view, a wrong one. He and his demons will suffer in Hell for all eternity, not rule in it. He currently rules over the world, as it was given over to him by God, so that he would have authority over it, but God promised us that Jesus would return one day and take the world from him and rule it with his people. The Bible is clear about these things, if you wish you can read more about it for yourself of course, the book of Revelation talks a lot of what is yet to come and satan's imprisonment in chapter 20.

One thing I hated is that they cut Clarisse from the film and tried to replace her with Annabeth. They made Annabeth a really tough warrior instead of a smart, strategic fighter. Kind of like how they cut ares from the movie and replaced his role as another bad guy (unintentionally rising Kronos) to start a war, with hades who only wants his riches back. They also had no respect for the ACTUAL laws of the book. Percy was told not to use Luke’s shoes because flying is Zeus’s territory and he would strike him out of the sky. That was a huge part of it. The gods aren’t allowed to do anything in another gods territory. They took away from Percy doing things himself (as said in the video). One thing that was really smart of him was recognizing that the Minotaur could only go forward and using that to his advantage. That is how he defeated him. It was a cool moment from Percy. But did the movie portray that? No! And they had the demigods use phones. The whole point was that they couldn’t use phone because the monsters could track them and find them. Some demigods did have phones but it was at their own risk. Percy was not one of them. And something Luke said was really stupid. In the movie, Luke said he never met his father but he broke into his house and stole some stuff. Ok, what makes the writer think that a GOD would have a house??? Other than olympus, they don’t have a house. Even if he did, how did Luke find it if he had never met Hermes at all? It makes no sense. And for gods sake, ITS A SEARCHERS LICENSE NOT HORNS. Grover should’ve been born with those horns. And at this point, movie grover doesn’t even deserve it. They took away grovers whole down-to -earth personality. They made him a ladies man and they ruined him. Finding pan isn’t even a thing here. Not to mention everyone in this movie is an asshole. Luke was an asshole from the beginning so the plot twist was not a twist at all. The campers was one that and me angry. Camp half blood is supposed to be a team. A unit. A place where people don’t always get along, but they do what’s right and come together to protect the well-being of the world and the people in it. There are people who stray from the path (Luke, Nico, etc) but in the end all the campers care about camp half blood the same amount. Even Percy and Clarisse can see eye to eye sometimes. The movie took away some of my favourite scenes and connections by making everyone judgmental. I could go on. Like how bringing Percy’s mother instead of Grover from the underworld is a stupid idea considering she could be killed a second time because she’s not a demigod (she’s a badass but still). Or how annabeths relationship with Luke should’ve been touched on more. Or how Persephone flirting with Grover was creepy But the video covers most of it
