Morph definitely wants to. And I doubt Logan would take much convincing if he wasn't head over heels for specifically the actual Jean. But the way the Inferno Wolverine speaks to Morph makes it clear that they've never explicitly stated what they want, leaving their intentions to bleed through their jokes and transformations.

Scott Summers has major abandonment issues and I thought they laid this out really well. He was abandoned as a child by his father, sacrificed himself to save his younger brother (taking brain damage that is why he can't control his blasts) and lost his his brother, the only family he had left, when Alex was adopted and Scott was left to suffer alone in an orphanage the rest of his childhood. When he walks out on the group, he says, "I can't be a part of this." To me, I read that as, "I intellectually see the logic in your arguments, but I am seeing my emotional issues getting in the way and every second I argue with you is hurting my son, keeping him from getting the help he needs." Scott walking out here is him sacrificing his emotional health for his son. He takes the burden again of being the adult and making the hard decision, to not give in to his childish need to prove better than his father and instead to take on his father's role for the good of his son. To me this says he hasn't gone through the arc of discovering his father is Corsair and that his father sacrificed himself to save Scott yet, because this is a great setup to help Scott understand his father more when he does.
@BCWasbrough7 ай бұрын
I agree, and I think that's a good take on Scott. Also as someone who's read the books, but not watched the animated series, catching up with the show's continuity can get confusing at times. I'm having a lot of "Oh, they haven't covered that yet?" moments watching 97.

@redviego67147 ай бұрын
Honestly this is what I came here to say. I feel like this is a rare Nando L, where he just misread the scene. On the first part, I feel like people would have clowned Cyclops here regardless of if he stepped out of the room or simply stepped back into a corner or something. But yeah, to the point of Cyclops, Cyclops states that he won't abandon his son, and thus chooses to step out of the discussion because nothing would convince him otherwise. He, and we the viewers, understand that not only is there no talking sense to Cyclops here, but also as the leader of the team, there's nothing stopping him from ordering Beast from making a 2nd bracelet and sending Cyke with his son to the future. It's the same reason he didn't show up for the goodbye. We all know Cyclops would not have been able to contain himself and would have either fought Bishop or gone with Bishop to the future, both of which would be very bad for the team. An important aspect of Cyclops and what makes him different from Wolverine is his emotional control vs Wolverine's lack thereof. So for Cyclops, he could probably feel himself getting frustrated over the matter and chose to step back before he does something bad, vs stay in the room and fight everyone. And that's what makes him the leader of the XMen, the knowledge that sometimes the best thing to do is to step away from the situation and not let your emotions get in the way of what's best for someone.

Scott feels like a real guy I have known since I was a kid. Just a real dude who walked over from the real world into comics and cartoons. His power is average/below average, almost believable, he sucks in very real ways, but he is also excellent in very real ways. No frills, only thrills.

And I can kinda appreciate his hesitation but not flipping out at the clone revelation. Like, that is a LOT to take in all at once, but he still genuinely CARES. But he also goes after her to talk once he's got a LITTLE more grasp. Even if he fumbles that too.

@@hartthornI have to disagree a bit. A real dude who is not really bad with emotions would have seen Maddy P and probably would have had something more calming for her. He's instantly turned off the second he realizes she's a clone. Why not say something like, "Hey, my feelings for you have been true regardless of who you are." I get it, the episode needs to happen, so Scott has to be clumsy with his words and actions, which is fine. People can have weaknesses. I do think Morph and Wolverine are reading different things into their interactions, if for not other reason than because that's better drama. Wolverine clearly is still completely into Jean, as we see in this episode when she scans his mind. And Morph is completely into Wolverine, but the only way he they can access those feelings is through the playful (and suggestive) banter, because Morph and Wolverine have been through too much. All the old series stuff happened, and Morph knows Wolverine doesn't love them, so Morph takes what they can get. And I do think we're going to get that played out, and the parallel between their respective unrequited loves.

@jakeekiss7 ай бұрын
@@MathisR412 Plenty of folks play all sides of the fence quite happily. The fact that Logan is a stud with the ladies says nothing about his abilities, or proclivities, towards anyone else. He's been around for well over a century, who knows how many partners he's had and in what varieties. We also can't really take a network kids show depiction in the 90s, when standards and practices wouldn't even allow the word "kill" as the default for thorough examinations of the human condition. This has been a thing the X-men, even and especially in comics, has struggled to get around since Claremont took over in the 80s. There were a LOT of lgb+ storylines that never saw the page not because the authors weren't interested, but because editorial put the brakes on them. Nightcrawler's mother and "father" were originally supposed to be Mystique and Destiny. There is a LOT of very thinly veiled stories that point to Kitty Pryde being at least bi (especially in Excalibur), and Rachel and her having on/off relationships. Etc etc. Basically, not new for X-Men to have the content, it's new that the authors are actually allowed to explore it. They likely won't do Wolverine because a certain contingent of fans would feel betrayed or whatever, but like, real people come out as gay or bi after years letting everyone think they're straight. I've known some of them.

Just by changing the order in which events happen, the conditions under which they happen since this is still when Scott himself is part of the X-Men, and how Madelyne's arc actually ends with her restarting her life under that identity Ben Reilly-style rather than her just being introduced as a different person so she could be procedurally written out and made obsolete by bringing back Jean; it fixes like virtually everything that's either unnecessarily convoluted or toxic about her origin and actually makes her a symoathizable character without just putting her through the worst mental torture to stage her villainy like Scott abandoning her or her feeling suicidal because the X-Men don't help her often

To answer a couple questions you had in the video, yes, Psylocke does show up in X-Men: the Animated Series, I believe it's in the Beyond Good and Evil episodes at the end of Season 4 when the villains are kidnapping psychic characters. So far, every one of Morph's transformations has been of someone that was in the Animated Series at some point. I also agree that we're seeing older versions of the characters and in forms that indicate some time has passed since we've seen them. As far as how much time has passed between the end of the Animated Series and the beginning of '97, we see and hear in the first Episode of '97 that Xavier "died" last year and that the date on his death certificate is November 11, 1996, so it's at least a couple months since then for 96 to be "last year", and with Madelyne being pregnant and having Cable in Episode 2 it's gotta be around 9 or so months since the end of the Animated Series. Basically, we're essentially told that they're somewhere in the May-August 1997 timeframe for this show with the original series ending in November 1996 in-Universe, and I'd hazard a guess and say '97 is at least 2-3 years in-Universe since the beginning of the Animated Series, possibly longer. Also, as far as Sunspot being in Episode 3 when he wasn't in 2, he did give Jubilee his number in Episode 1, so she probably called him to come over as it would have taken a bit of time for Beast to run his tests on Jean and Madelyne, so there was a bit of time in between the 2 episodes. Besides all that though, I agree, as a horror fan I love what they did with the episode and with Madelyne's powers and outfit and such. I hope we see more of those horror elements pop up in upcoming Marvel projects.

But the way I figured I just assumed this was like the evil persona Sinister planted in her that he just awoke, like a sleeper agent. I will say, I wish we would see more of the Goblin Queen persona, but I think all that we absolutely needed was a little scene where she is defeated by Jean Grey and comes to terms with Scott at the end of their fight. It is not quite satisfying to see her go directly from fighting the X-Men to teaming up with Cyclops with no sort of material in-between, and its not like its a real TV show that has to stick strictly to their time-slot, they could easily add a minute or two to the run-time to just tighten that up. But otherwise it was another banger of an episode.

It's not goofy, it doesn't make sense. She is not commanding any goblins, she has noyhing to do with goblins so it's almost as random as calling herself Unicorn Knight. Just imagine them making a movie about Peter Parker who was shot with super soldier serum, uses vibranium shield and wears red white and blue but is still called Spider Man because comics. Shit does not make sense.
@kapitankapital65807 ай бұрын
@@sathrielsatanson666 dude, all the X-Men have silly names. We've got a guy called Wolverine whose powers are regeneration and having knives in his hands. What has that got to do with wolverines? Hell, she's literally created by a guy who is called MISTER SINISTER. I really don't see why Goblin Queen is anymore ridiculous than that. It seems like a consistent level of goofy to me. Don't get me wrong, it would be cool to see her with some goblins at some point in the future. But that's really not a deal breaker for me.
@sathrielsatanson6667 ай бұрын
@kapitankapital6580 Again, silly and doesn't make sense are two different things. Look up how wolverines look, big claws are their prominent feature, so that is a silly example. You think what Nathaniel Essex is doing is not Sinister? Seriously, next think you are going to tell me that Warren Warthington should not be called Angel because he is not a celestial being. Again, my argument is not that Jean's clone in the series being called Madeline Pryor aka Goblin Queen is silly. I am arguing that her being called Goblin Queen does only make sense if you know she was called that in the comics. It is a nitpicky kinda argument but it is a valid one.
@kapitankapital65807 ай бұрын
@@sathrielsatanson666 wolverines don't have three claws though, and let's be real there are animals that have significantly more pronounced claws. Also, if we're going to do this, you can justify "Goblin Queen" as somebody who commands mischievous or evil spirits; which is very much in keeping with what we see her do in the episode. Is it a bit of a stretch? Sure. But so are many of the others. Ultimately, it's going to be personal whether or not it works for you. For me, it really wasn't an issue at all. Also, on the topic of Madelyn Pryor (or however it is spelt), for me I just assumed that it was a name of some personal significance. We see two characters who share memories discuss it and when she suggests it Jean doesn't go "oh why did you pick that?" so it isn't a surprise to her. I can see that if you know the comics it would be a bit of a groan-worthy moment because you'd realise it's just "this is the comic name", but if you're not familiar with it then the conclusion you draw is that this is some name they've used in the past or the name of a childhood friend or whatever.

This sequel, however, is a pure nostalgia bait for the people who watched the original so it could develop yogether with the audience. Really deserved 2 (or more) episodes, it was a blast but ultimately pretty odd how quickly they resolved everything. If it needed more content (I don't think it would): make Rogue and Magneto's field mission be a distress call from Colossus and adapt the Limbo story rather than just do a throwaway Magik cameo that doesn't even make sense in-universe. Loved the Morph content regardless, shower scene might cause some controversy lmao

I'm not convinced that this is supposed to be the full Inferno story. I suspect this was more if a set-up for a lot of upcoming stirues, but likely in a future season. - baby Nathan, we will see about thar family connection. - because Valerie Cooper us involved, we will see X-Factor again - as a result, they will eventually have to deal with the Alex/Scott connection - i think they will have Maddie meet Alex and they will have a relationship - they Illayana bits are foreshadowing, she will be back in a version of New Mutants, as they have a few of the characters that exist. And we would get a full Inferno story that includes Magick.

I noticed some people took Scott walking out the door as him abandoning Nathan (after saying he wouldn’t) when it was kind of the opposite. He refused to take part in abandoning Nathan. But it was equally sad, because he didn’t say goodbye to him with Madelyn, presumably to not give credence to abandonment. He may regret not saying goodbye. I know I would in that situation.

Spiral and Psylocke were both in more than one episode of the original series. With New Mutants, Dani and Magma were not, Karma had a brief non speaking visual cameo, and Cannonball, Warlock, Rictor, Boom Boom and Wolfsbane were all featured somehow, but poor Rahne and Tab didn't get to talk. Rahne got to growl. Rusty and Skids were in an episode, but they joined the MLF pretty shortly after leaving X-Factor and weren't New Mutants long. And of course now there's Roberto. I had the same reaction to the Madeline Prior name drop. Like... what?? Why? What's the character justification? I had to watch again to see if maybe I missed something, and no, they just decided to have Clone Jean change her name because... the comics. Also had a problem with the justification for sending Nathan to the future. Did they FORGET that Wolverine developed the antibodies for that virus in season 2? In under a minute? And you're telling me Logan, who notoriously puts himself through an absurd amount of pain on a regular basis because he knows he'll survive, wouldn't do that again for Jean's sake? This episode definitely needed some breathing room, or at least to extend things like trying in vain to cure Nathan and Clone Jean taking her new name into the B plot of the next episode.

The sequence of Morph becoming Magik (calling Madelyn "comrade") then getting mind controlled by Madelyn ("I want you to fight for me!") and becoming Darkchilde is a massive nod to Chris Claremont. So. There was a bunch of stuff going on. Madelyne and Scott had been married and she gave birth, and basically told him they were leaving the X-Men. Some time after that, Jean's popsicle body is found and defrosted, Scott hears and runs to her, abandoning Madelyne and his son, and he forms X-Factor with Jean, Beast, and Ice Man. Not long after that, a group tried to kill Madelyne and kidnap baby Nathan, but the X-Men save her and Nathan. After that, the world believes that the X-Men all died. Scott believes his wife, son, and brother, and friends all died. However, the X-Men and Madelyne and Nathan are still alive and set up in the Australian outback. Alex keeps looking after Madelyne and his nephew, but they're both attractive people who have been hurt by Scott. So... they hook up. And when Madelyne goes Goblin Queen, of course she takes her new man along. That's as condensed as I can make it.

I would say the Goblin Queen's Hellscape was entirely internal mental illusions. The key to this is a theory of mental control/illusions that manipulates the subject through their emotions. If the illusion is connected to something the person *feels* is real, the mind will accept it more readily, even if intellectually they might see this as impossible. That's why each illusion was tied to a strong emotion. To affect everyone at once, it makes sense to me that it would be extremely difficult to multi task and trap everyone in separate illusions, so she takes one emotion they all share, guilt at not trusting the Jean that was at their side, and gives them the emotionally expected/desired result; punishment in the form of Hell. Again, the key here is that once the primary narrative is accepted, the subject's mind actually helps the illusionist, supporting the new reality, even filling in gaps and details to make it all seem even more real. This is the most basic con - get them emotionally hooked and they do all the work. This is why original Jean needed to appear and demonstrate the power to manipulate their reality in the same way - she needed to convince them that there was a way out and bring saved by their friend is another powerful emotional narrative. If she had just broken them free, it might have caused severe mental damage leaving them unable to believe the reality around them, so instead she eased them out of it, restored things in a progression they could follow and accept. It also occurs to me that Jean might not need to have suddenly become a Mastermind level illusionist. It's been established that mind linked non-psychics can be drawn into the astral plane, a place where reality is at the whim of the most powerful psychics. New Jean had fought with and presumably mind linked the entire team at one time or another, so it would be a familiar connection their minds wouldn't reject like an unknown invader, then she could have pulled the team into the astral plane where everything was under her control.

Morph is there so they can do what they did before- use designs they have for all those characters, without worrying about casting VA and writing story/dialogue for them. I think this episode was as good as it could be for what it was trying to do- cover a 4+ month comic event in one episode. For my money, the only thing the dropped the ball on was Morph. They did great showing how facing Mr Sinister was his biggest fear, but he was still willing to do it for real. That deserved some kind of payoff apart from getting incapacitated by Goblin Queen and disappearing from the rest of the episode. I'd gladly trade a scene to resolve that for one of the scenes setting the table for the Gambit/Rogue/Magneto love triangle, which I feel they clearly telegraphed is going to become a thing, and didn't need a third scene to hammer it home.

The way the elements of this episode converged to show us these iconic scenes/poses from the comics reminds me a lot of the idea of Canon in the SpiderVerse. Madelyne chose those names for meta reasons, true, but one can infer that those decisions were reached because of Canon. They were inevitable, even if the path leading to those decisions is different.

But I feel like if it was 2 episodes instead of one, so we got even a scene or two that built tension and gave some motivation to the characters, Madelyn in particular, that would have been very good. But regardless, here's my 10 second pitch to fix the "Call me Madelyn Pryor" clunkiness: JG: Wait, this is your home too! MP: No, it's Jean Grey's home, we can't both be Jean Grey... Call me... Madelyn. [in this instance of the story, we're going to say Jean Grey's middle name is Madelyn instead of Elaine after her mother, for narrative purposes] JG:My--our middle name. MP:Madelyn... Pryor, mom's maiden name. [I can't find if Jean's mom has a canonical maiden name] *They embrace, then MP turns to go* JG: Well then, Madelyn Pryor, we'll see you around? MP: I hope not.

The VA for Jean/Madelyne is Jennifer Hale, who (among her quite prolific career) actually played Jean in “Wolverine and the X-Men”.
