It’s very rare that a show not only lives up to the nostalgic expectations but actually out performs the original. This is some of the best marvel content since endgame. The writers understand the characters, their trauma, their relationships with each other. They’re all flawed and make mistakes but also grow.
@zeroattentiongaming8207 ай бұрын
The original show is a high bar to clear, but one that was always inherently held back by the children's cartoon standards of the time. It was aa mature as it could be, but not as much as the material being covered had the potential to be. 97 feels like the original show with the kid's gloves fully removed. Not being needlessly graphic or edgy, simply being written for a more mature audience than the original, without losing any of the charm and fun in the process. X Men 97 is truly a rare beast in this era of endless nostalgia bait of wildly varying qualities
@FinnyThePoo7 ай бұрын
I said from the beginning, X-Men 97 doesn't feel like the original cartoon, it somehow manages to feel like how watching the original cartoon as a kid in the 90s felt. Beau used this same mechanic disguised as a double entendre when Morph turned into Jean and told Logan they love him while Logan was on the respiratory and you instantly saw his breath as his brain registered her voice while in the coma. Plus we all know it was really Morph saying how he felt to Logan which is a perfect parallel to how Logan feels for Jean in both having crushes on these people who are not interested in them like that back. And this happens often in life so I love when writers are able to weave those moments and feelings into a story for those who can relate.

My only issue with the show was that the pacing was too fast at times, but overall they nailed the characters, themes, and action scenes. Like, these are the best superhero action scenes in maybe any tv show ever. Re: Daredevil You kind of have to consider the bigger implications. Looting usually happens in moments of extreme panic and societal disorder. So by stopping the looting, Daredevil's essentially trying to bring a sense of calm to the public, restoring some amount of order. Because that's what ground level heroes should be doing in extreme disorder - helping the people on the ground get through it. Looters generally loot because they don't think there's any point in respecting normalcy, or that normalcy is no longer possible and society has eroded. It's not just a finger wag, saying "looting is against the law! Control yourselves, citizens!" I think Daredevil actually cares about the looters AND about the people being stolen from. Then you consider that this is the 90s, when there was a bigger middle class, and that those shop owners might just be everyday joes. How do people missed this such simple motivation of Sun Spot joining Magneto's side. He also joined being lead by Magneto and doesnt know who Charles is. For Magneto to survive that sentinel blast he had to scale down his shield to just protect himself and let the others die, when he realised that was his only option he even told Leach not to be afraid. The reason he was so mad at the world after Genosha is because he was forced into that position, a position where he had to let innocent mutants die for him to survive. That's also how he could see Leach being vaporised and the reason he was mad at Charles.

The time dialation effect delayed the detonation that scattered the xmen through time. I would say the magnetic field contained it to just them. The someone is probably box which is possibly greymalkin tech which is connected to Apocalypse.

Oddly enough... No, Magneto never used his magnetic powers on Logan in the original show. I checked every episode and he always threw stuff at him, but never threw HIM (something he actually did in the comics way back when they first fought). I like to think in universe people just assumed adamantium was not magnetic and so he could take on Magneto (not sure why Magneto never did that, I guess he never assumed he needed it?)
@pixelsort7 ай бұрын
Maybe Magneto is just a really deep dude. Imagine that humans graft your bones with super-metal to weaponize your body and you dedicate your life to helping them and trying to do the right thing for all regardless the way you were personally violated. Puppeting Wolverine would make Magneto a contributor to that violation. Drawing the line at being stabbed through the chest six blades at a time seems like a reasonable measure.
@grandsome17 ай бұрын
I think magneto his way powerful now than he was back then, he could telekinesis everyone with his magnetism if he didn't limit himself mentally. Everything is affected by magnets, it's just that metals even the non-magnetic ones are more susceptible to electromagnetism.
@fabooshka7 ай бұрын
Because Magneto never tried his hardest to kill the X-men, he still respected their mission for peace so bending the adamantium would be a violation. Like he said in the TAS "All mutants are accepted on Asteroid M, even X-men 😁🫵"

I really enjoy this video, you have loads of great points. With Sunspot's arc, I think you're right that a couple more episodes focusing on him would have been beneficial, but I think his actions in the last couple episodes still make sense. I don't really see him going with Magneto as him being radicalized, I think he was just scared. He was just starting to feel safe being a mutant, then he was shown exactly why he shouldn't feel safe. His mother abandoned him, essentially, and he was about to go on a risky adventure to stop the world from ending. Then down comes Magneto with all his charisma, telling Roberto that he'll be safe if he joins him. No riisking his life in battle, no more humans out to kill him, all he has to do is follow Magneto and wait for a while. He showed in the fight that his heart was never really in the "kill all humans" plan, he just followed a charismatic leader promising him security, even though that security would be bought with a terrible price. Which feels pretty believable.

As far as Morph's feeling for Wolverine go, it's clear that they were closer than just teammates. Wolverine took Morph's apparent death the hardest out of the team by a huge margin, and Morph demonstrated over and over that they know how to push all of Wolverine's buttons. For whatever attracted Morph to Wolverine, they're probably willing to shift into Jean to give Wolverine a very specific outlet. Wolverine gets to pretend he's with Jean, and Morph gets to pretend Wolverine's expressions of desire and attraction are directed at them rather than their Jean cosplay.

I think the Morph thing made a whole lot of sense, from the perspective of a nonbinary homosexual male. There are cis/het men in my life that have been closer than best friends, but physically I was not compatible with their sexual identity. And, I’ve even experienced those friends tell me if it weren’t for my body I would be perfect for them. And that’s okay, I respect their identity and can recognize when it’s more important to have that person in my life even with unrequited romantic feelings. TLDR; most nonbinary people with cis/het bonds understand Morph & Wolverine’s relationship very well.

That sort of explains why it didn't make sense to me at all. I still don't get it.

@@kennyhudson9201 and you just can’t unless you’re in that situation. And that’s fine, it isn’t meant to resonate with everyone. That’s really one of the beauties of this show, it gave so many moments for so many different people to feel represented and understood by. 10/10, writers.
@kennyhudson92017 ай бұрын
@@MotherTuck I don't get it. Do non cis people understand straight stuff? Because if so, why don't I understand theirs? I feel like we are all humans and stories should be told universally. It feels like I am left out or too stupid to understand some stuff, when you intentionally put stuff you know not everyone can understand. I kind of wish we would just do universally understood stuff in media, so that I don't feel left out, and like I am missing parts of stories that I enjoy.
@MotherTuck7 ай бұрын
@@kennyhudson9201 lol oh. Well, if you really believed all humans were equal and should be able to enjoy a story, you would have no problem with people different from you getting moments to relate to. Sounds like you’re just another butt-hurt cis/het man that’s upset that someone else got a little time to feel represented. You had plenty of moments to relate to, I don’t feel bad at all that you “don’t understand” a 30 second moment in a ten episode season.

@@kennyhudson9201 maybe don’t try and get it and just appreciate that it makes others feel seen and happy. There will be parts of a lot of shows that you relate to and understand more than others. It’s a bit selfish to think every single thing has to make sense to you. :)

Apocalypse "died" at the end of season 4, and in season 5 Beast and Jubilee encounter a cult dedicated to resurrect him lead by Fabian Cortez. He tried to use Jubilee's body, but they managed to escape so Apocalypse took over Cortez's body. So Cortez is probably dead or trapped inside Apocalypse's mind.

Of the X-Men that disappeared with Asteroid M, Wolverine, Morph, and Storm are currently not accounted for (they weren't shown in either ancient Egypt or the fiture with young Nathan). I think the small unrequited love moments between Morph and Wolverine were here mostly to set up much more interaction between the two of them next season wherever they end up. Storm could also be with them, which makes sense to me as a pairing for a couple reasons. 1. We have already seen alternate futures in the original cartoon where Storm and Wolverine were married, potentially setting up the love triangle you mentioned this season didn't have between Morph, Wolverine, and Jean (just swapping in Storm for Jean) 2. Storm's major arc in this season was overcoming the loss of her powers and reclaiming her identity; Wolverine will have to undergo similar struggles now that his adamantium has been removed and she could be there to help guide him (maybe they've ended up in a time where Wolverine will have to submit himself to the same Weapon X experimentation again, or maybe he will make a deal with Apocalypse)

The great thing about the ending is they didn't even beat Bastion. In essence he was actually right about "humans hating their children" with the missiles(mirroring his own childhood). They didn't actually get Asteroid M away, it was Magneto in the clutch, and even if you let all that slide, they still manage to snatch failure from victory by getting scattered across time. The thing is, that's X-men in a nutshell, never getting a clean win, but saving the world, and getting screwed in the process. Edit- Daredevil did face a Prime Sentinel, and got wrecked. Also, looting is illegal, just cause things are going crazy doesnt mean free pass act like a jackass.

"Speaking of people we don't see, here are characters we saw in the original series!" The winter guard had a starring episode. And Daredevil taking care of the street level crime is because he see the little people in the big picture. Small business exist and looters are known to get violent, but you think he should call up a girlfriend? Captain America was presented as an ally to mutants who thinks about the bigger picture on a macro level, which is why he doesn't act impulsively. He tried to dissuade Kelly from launching nukes. The dialogue literally never said anything about their psyches combining into Onslaught either, they talked about the risk of shattering Xavier's mind along with Magneto's. Magneto can't see the faces of his family because of his trauma (it's explained). And he never raised the kids and only found out about his parent status when his children were all grown. Sunspot's story was about learning what a real family is; you can screw up with family and they forgive you. He got pissed off and picked the side that picked him after his family threw him to the wolves. They combined launching Krakoa into space with the siege perilous to displace people across time. Morph has very obviously one sided feelings that are not and cannot be reciprocated with every line they say being a joke to avoid dealing with real feelings. Usually your reviews are usually so much more on point and less of a "did some nerdy bro casual do a bunch of reading before making a video" vibe. * HUGE fan by the way, I'm only honestly critical because I care and you've helped me to find more info over the years and you don't come off like someone who would read a comment disagreeing with/critiquing your videos so much as a "oh damn I missed that" or "Naw I disagree but I see where you're coming from" kinda person.

The only thing I was a little uncertain about was the Prof X/Magneto psychic battle. What happened there? Charles hijacked Magneto in order to reverse the EMP and then, what? Brought him back? Changed him? Manipulated him? In Fatal Attractions, Magneto was left catatonic. Charles cometely broke him. In Ultimate X-Men, he wiped and reprogrammed Magneto into thinking he had always been a regular guy. In '97, it seems like he brome and rebuilt Magneto without really changing anything.

Not to nitpick too much, but Daredevil was stopping looters right before the reverse-EMP went off and restored the world's electricity. So basically he was stopping the social chaos running rampant through the streets that was caused by the global blackout just before you see the power come back on behind him. When we see him next, he's dealing with the human sentinels before getting blown into the storefront; enter Cloak and Dagger, followed by Asteroid-M falling, etc. Basically you got the order of events mixed up.

I’m with you on just waiting for an explanation of how Bastion got magneto off genosha. Any teleporters on his team?? Seemed like a perfect set up with Leech countering his powers to “hide” him. The only explanation I got was that Bastion was ON Genosha for the attack. Which is great and, yeah, I missed it on the first watch. But doesn’t explain how Magneto survived (especially since he says he SAW Leech die in his arms) and doesn’t explain how bastion captured him and took him off the Island. I’m not even an x-factor fan boy, but I am ALL for getting an update on that team. Particularly an update on how they feel about having been used by Val AND Bastion against their own kind? Feels like a good time for them to stop punching in their government time clocks and go rogue. I have a very special place in my heart for the og Generation X comics (especially #1-25) but it’s probably for the best if they basically mix new mutants with gen x and x-men academy, and have them ultimately “graduate” to a Cable led version of X-force. I would LOVE to get banshee and Emma co-teaching, but could also work to maybe have kitty co-teach with Emma. Would also be cool to get some of Emma’s shenanigans toying with Iceman’s powers psychically a la early 90’s x-men comics, basically making him aware of his untapped omega level potential. Don’t really see Bobby as the “teacher” type though, even if he is a founding member of the x-men.
