Thank you so much for your lovely comment again John 😃 it was hard work, but I’m glad it’s all done now 😂 We took lots of advice and especially from the Dry dock themselves and they were fantastic and also on hand to check everything we were doing, as they were blacking the boat next to us, so we felt confident having them around 😃 I’m still aching now 😂 and yes you are right about the bottom, even if some of it scrapes off, the bits of paint left in them pits will stay there and it was quite easy to get underneath at the Northwich Dry dock, I’ve never been able to get under at all the other ones I’ve been at 😃😃🏴‍☠️

I really like the details. I don't own a boat anymore (oh lord, how many times in 28 years I painted my bottom) but the details are fascinating because I know how important they are. But ... What a fantastic informative volg. Thank you so much. We live on a Dutch barge and had it out last year. We had the whole bottom replaced (shes 120 years old!) We also used 2 pak but where we have difficulty getting the ol’ girl out of the water, she had 5 coats of undercoat and 5 of top coat. (All the yards that used to take boats out around here seem to be closing down, they’re as rare as hens teeth!). During the welding we had 3 fires on board (one of them quite serious) but were SO glad we got it all done. We’ve got to look after our old girls haven’t we! Thanks once again for the work you do on the vlog. XX

We just did the bottom the the boss’s 65’ Viking and his 50’ sail boat, (I’m the captain) there was four of us doing the work, we didn’t do both boats together but one week apart, we sanded both hulls, epoxied all the under water metal parts, then anti fouled both. It was hard work, dirty, filthy, nasty, and hot! ☀️🔥🥵 so I certainly know what’s involved in dry docking a boat!

Hello Heidi - greetings from Poland Dry Dock Day. I've been in this dry dock before with Robbie Cumming and his narrowboat "Naughty Lass" on 1st May 2021. You three ladies did a brilliant job despite the breaks because of the terrible weather. Fabulous finished job. Bravo! I liked Jacquies technical explanation about the paints. I noticed on the wall behind her, lots of initials had been carved into the stonework. Graffiti or stone masons marks? Superb drone shots of where you were. And all those different boats - some must be museum pieces. Love the boat sign on the wall. A fantasic video, great camera work and lovely commentary. Stay safe please

Great vlog with plenty of good blacking ideas for other bods to consider. I like the use of the aluminium paint which should in theory act as a seal and prevent rust. The cost of the paint was expensive, but should give you a longer in-water time i.e. 5 years plus, as against the usual 2-3 years for comastic type applications. Long may the 'Rum Wench' and its crew sail the inland waterways :)

some kind of big tarp covering the boats would seem like a good idea and while u could rig it up yourself I'm surprised the folks renting out the dry-dock don't have some kind of system to keep the rain off. I mean it does rain a lot in England I'm told and it wouldn't be to hard or expensive to organize a roof of some kind. Something as simple as a large tarp held up by the crane gantry with the water running off down either side would keep it dry enough for work to continue as it rained or even build a permanent structure that can be easily removed or opened when not needed.

The problem is there Adam, is it’s a bit of a wind tunnel, plus as liveaboards we had our fire going so the chimney was on… I know quite a few dry docks that won’t let you live on while blacking so that’s probably why 😃🏴‍☠️

You could probably clean and prep the surface under a 'roof' but when it's raining the humidity is usually too high to get the paint to cure properly.

@@ghost307 still think that with boats needing blacking so often and the fact that it rains so much around there some kind of undercover facility or way to cover the boat would be a real time (and therefore money) saver, but what do I know I'm down here in the Pacific where we play in the sea ;). Canal boats do seem very relaxed n laid back, very appealing (except 4 that rain).

I was doing some welding on a boat just to the rear of the dry dock, nice place but had to drag the welder and my gear all the way from the car park, over the bridge etc, what a sod😅😅😅

Excellent informative video. Some great people run that dry dock. That big boat that was above the dry dock is the sister of one that I used to work carrying grain from Liverpool to Frodsham. Folks forget the waterways were built to transport stuff.

Great job, girls 👍. Ours is coming out of the water for blacking next spring, but we’re having to be hauled out up a slipway because there’s no dry dock facilities on the Chesterfield canal. We won’t be staying on board either as the only way on and off is via a step ladder and getting the dog up and down wouldn’t really be safe - or comfortable for either her or us. She’s a whoppet with long, skinny legs, so it would be like carting a giant preying mantis about! We’ll stay in the folding caravan that we bought instead.

Really enjoyed this one! Very interested to see a boat being done with two-pack. I’m a bit dubious about the conventional bitumen blacking, it seems to be a hangover from the wooden boat era and doesn’t appear to last very long at all. Thank you very much for taking us through the process. Ship’s complement did an absolutely fantastic job painting the entire hull in awkward conditions, detail work and calligraphy are excellent. But above all, love the sense of fun, it just shines through. Brilliant!

Thanks John, I’ve used Bitumen on all 3 of my boats now over the last 10 years and I’ve noticed things like diesel bringing it straight off etc and I always come out every 2 years and it always needs doing, so it worries me how people leave it 4-5 years … this jotun stuff is used a lot on things like bridges while the tide is out so I reckon it’s good stuff, but we will see…. I’ve heard so many good reports about it but I will get the old girl out again in 3 years to check her over and touch up any bits that need doing 😃😃🏴‍☠️ the proof will be in the pudding 😃

Modern bitumen paint is a metal coating for steel work it has little to do with the boiling tar used on wooden boats.

@@johnedwards1685 it all depends on the preparation and conditions it's in, I've done 4 years with basic black bitumen no problem, and that was painted between tides on the Thames foreshore.
