Cricket stadiums can't be a circle. The boundary line in an oval. Not all are the same size. But commonly a semicircle of 30 yards from the centre of each wicket. Which are are 1 chain (22 yards) apart. Hence the name Oval for the world famous cricket stadium in Kennington, London. Home to Surrey county cricket club since 1845.

That is because they committed the ultimate sin of moving,not "up the road" but 40 miles away deserting their old fans(they were WimbleDON before, like The Tennis:) The Cricket references. The Narrator was an admirer of Shane Warne who played for his State in Oz: "Victoria" but, also, for Hampshire in England. Ladies. Most stadiums in the UK were built in places, like the middle of towns, before cars were a thing, & the traditional way to travel to them was by train, for away supporters. The local fans could usually walk, cycle, or take a bus to matches, as teams were very much home grown, with players from the area, & as well as fans. So in most cases they did not, & often cannot cope with lots of car traffic. Only some recently built stadiums, out of the main urban areas, have extensive car parking facilities. In recent times the local attachment is not as strong as it was, because of players coming from all over the place to the main clubs, but there is still fierce loyalty to local clubs. By the way one of the great legends of English football died yesterday. World cup winner, & Manchester United icon, Sir Bobby Charlton (look him up) Rest in Peace. Rugby grounds & stadiums tend to be smaller than major football stadiums, because of not having the money that is spent on soccer. Rugby League has working class origins, while Rugby Union was the none professional game plaid by Gentlemen, originating in the 'Public' (private) schools. the rules for each type of rugby are a little different, but now it is possible to switch between them as Union is now also professional. Cricket grounds usually have little in the way of built structures, except for the major Test venues like Lord's, the Oval, Headingly etc. Traditional stadiums had stands, literally the fans stood to watch matches, but since the Hillsborough disaster , & similar problems, most football stadiums have had to become all seated by law.

Fun trivia. My wife's sister lives very close to Anfield ground (visible in the video clip) close. Watching a match on tv with the windows open, she hears the crowd when a goal is scored outside a moment before the tv shows it. Due to the brief delay in satellite up / down links.

32:08 the County Ground in Swindon is also near the infamous Magic Roundabout which you can see at the right hand side of the picture. The council wanted to call it the County Roundabout after the football ground but had to give in to the locals who refused to call it anything other than the Magic Roundabout

Favourite of mine has to be Anfield, home to England's most successful football club, Liverpool F.C. Although I am a proud Scotsman, I have been a Liverpool fan throughout my life, all because of their iconic manager, the late and great Bill Shankly. You right to mention the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" which is always associated with the fans that stand in the Liverpool Kop at Anfield. Every home game, the late Gerry Marsden's vocal leads the singing as the players come on to the pitch. There is nothing to beat big European nights at Anfield for atmosphere.

Anfield is very overrated, it's an extremely dangerous area known for its child murders, one week after a child was shot a few hundred metres away from the stadium the players used a gun celebration. Liverpool fans are anti British and claim they are not English but then complain why some of there players aren't in the England team. It's a socialist area with a victim mentality. Yet there fans are big crying babies if they don't spend hundreds of millions in the transfer market. Liverpool fans are the worst fans in the UK by far. Let's not forget there bad behaviour and actions killed 38 people in the Heysel disaster and got all English teams banned from European competition for years. Linked to a decline in the English football pyramid. Imagine a cross between Chicago and Pyongyang

FYI: Sandygate in Sheffield is the oldest football ground in the world. First opened in 1804, Hallam F.C. have played at the ground since 1860. Sandygate has been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the "Oldest Football Ground in the World". Rugby stadiums can be anything from 2000 to about 25,000. The bigger name team stadiums being round 10,000+ . But the bigger stadiums are often shared as a football stadium. Bristol's rugby team, The Bristol Bears, share a stadium with Bristol City for example. Twickenham Stadium is the largest by miles at around 85,000 as its England's home stadium

I grew up with my father taking me to Lincoln's ground, Sincil Bank for every match. Yes - It's true that for night matches Lincoln Cathedral would glow above the stand. Another thing that the ground used to be famous for was that the railway behind one of the stands was raised. When trains came along it looked like the were riding along the top of the stand.

The County Ground in Somerset has changed a bit from what you see in the video. There was a housing development on the side and most residents like to sit on their balconies on game days to watch the cricket for free. The cricket club also arranged for some giant floodlights to be put up, and these are now the highest objects in the town. They look like giant fly swatters!

Portman Road, Ipswich Town. Ipswich is my home town. I am a former football and Ipswich Town fan (Cricket is my sport now and has been for the last 25 years) so I have a huge soft spot for Portman road and I have watched alot of games there. If you want a pretty ground try looking at Castle Park, Colchester. It is a Cricket pitch sited in the grounds of Castle Park which the park around the Roman/Norman castle in Colchester. Kevin Beatty used to live back to back to my Dad, My Dad used to play Sunday League, one afternoon Dad was playing against a 15 year old David Geddis, Geddis scored 3 in the first 10 minutes, after his 3rd goal Geddis said "I CAN SCORE 6 TODAY IF I WANTED TOO!!" next time Geddis got the ball, Dad went through him like a dose of salts, Dad got sent off and Geddis got sent to hospital, Dad said "I TOLD YOU, YOU WOULDN'T SCORE 6 TODAY,YOU BIG HEADED LITTLE GET"

ITFC season ticket holder here! It was lovely to see Portman Road included. The pitch surface has been praised by many over the years, and Alan Ferguson, I believe won 7 Groundsman of the Year awards during his time there. The capacity has dropped slightly since this video to 29,673 due to a new scoreboard fitted in the corner of the stadium last season, but plans to rebuild the Cobbold stand (the one 'with the shady bit' as Natasha said! 😂) will no doubt significantly increase capacity. 'Uppa Towen' as we Ipswich fans say in Suffolk!

Wow! Great to see Scarborough's North Marine Road make the stadium list. Easy walking distance from the town centre and station it is well known for people getting sunburn - it is bowl shaped and a complete sun trap with very little cover. Bolton Wanderers stadium has just been renamed the ToughSheet Stadium. Originally when it was first built in 1997 it was called the Reebok Stadium. It has had a few names since, but Most fans still call it the Reebok. It also has a hotel attached to it and has held many concerts including kicking off P!nks European tour at the Reebok this summer (See its still the Reebok ha!) Elton John played here, Little Mix, The Killers. Oh and Coldplay filmed their music video Fix You in the Reebok when they held a concert here. Old Trafford is also the name of a cricket stadium, opened 1867. Football one 1910. Wrexham is in Wales. Dont forget Trent Bridge a beautiful stadium on the banks of the river Trent. Also a shout out to Worcestershire CC ground. some of the big cricket stadiums like Old Trafford, Headingly, Lords, Edgebaston have lost the atmosphere since they had all the changes made. Luton's Kenilworth Road Stadium was at one point artificial grass, my dad who played football in the 1960s for Dunstable Town & Bedford Town took part in a seniors game there with old team mates, it was the last game played on the artificial grass before it was removed in 1991 after a ban on such surfaces. I think only Queens Park Rangers (the first) had another artificial grass ground.

@@peterburry2531 I went to see Arsenal play at Oldham on that plastic pitch and our Icelandic player, Siggi Jonnson, was the only one who could keep his feet on it. It is high up on a hill and gets really cold. I was talking to a couple of policemen before the match and they said they drew straws to see who got to patrol ice station zebra for a night match.

Ever since you covered Cricket for beginners , (you have covered our Football Stadium's) , but as featured why not take a closer look at some of the most stunning "County Championship Cricket Stadiums" from old to new these include those where England's home test match's are played, the MCCA (Minor Counties Cricket Association) are the grounds that sit below the first class cricket teams, but are some of the most historical and picturesque locations. well worth a look

I live a 5 minute drive from the Franklin garden stadium he showed for Northamptonshire. Lol The seating tends to be the same colours as the home teams shirts. That is why there is so much difference and why some are so colourful.

Jealous of the old school cricket ovals. So much history and I'm glad some are kept more or less original which gives them quite a bit of character. Also very surprised that there is a stand at the Rose Bowl named after Aussie legend Shane Warne (crickets nortorious playboy). He died last year aged about 50. The partying etc caught up to him. His funeral was held at the MCG (biggest stadium in Australia) and he got a stand named after him there as well.

They named that stand after him in 2012 or something because he used to play for Hampshire. Besides, Warney was a player which transcended rivalries tbh, he was revered in England and it was a very sad day when he died.

Warne did a lot to help pull the club out of it's financial trouble when he came to play when it was on the brink of bankcruptcy. Yes, Rod Bransgrove put the money in, but he pulled attention to the club which was great for it

Warne played for Hampshire CCC for most of the 1990's and early 2000's unless he was playing for Australia, hence why the Stand has his name attached to it.

Lovely reaction video ladies. I must tip my hat to your awareness and willingness to embrace other cultures in knowledge and understanding. You raised a couple of points you requested feedback on: - The clubs are old, 1900’s in many cases. Therefore most of the stadiums were built where the team supporters and the team came from. Supporters couldn’t travel to games any other way apart from walking. Some stadiums have been moved away for better amenities, but not always with success, as at its grass roots it’s still a community sport. (Darlington being the prime example). This is why you still have the quaint and wonderful Kenilworth Road still going. Supporters still want them as part of the community. Arsenal for example was a team from the munitions factory of the Woolwich Arsenal. And the team nicknames can also reflect this, (Northampton town are called ‘the cobblers’, because they made shoes in the town). - Rugby Union stadium attendances. You’ve probably been watching international rugby union. The attendances are much larger than the domestic game. We have a national stadium in England, Twickenham, (82,000 capacity). The other 2 British nations have large national stadiums too, (Wales & Scotland) and not forgetting Ireland’s unique Landsdowne Road, with its very short 4th side due to local residents wanting some light. They do create wonderful atmospheres, especially Wales’ Millennium Stadium and Landsdowne Road. - Rugby split into 2 codes in Huddersfield 1895. (Above a pub). This was because it was an amateur game and the working class northerners couldn’t afford to play without payment, because they couldn’t afford to be away or even get time off work. Rugby League became the professional northern league and rugby Union remained as the amateur southern league, (realistically the midlands too). This is how it remained until Union became professional about 25 years ago. League is very popular in Australia. Far less international rugby league is played, therefore it gets less exposure to international audiences. When I have introduced people to Rugby for the first time, when watching both types they generally prefer the game of League, because it’s rules mean that it is much faster paced and simpler to pick up. Also people who know your Football tend to pick up League quite quickly due to the similarity with the ‘4 down system’. That said they also acknowledge the atmosphere of international rugby Union and the pride of the fans, makes it a great spectacle. I have played both, so will sit on the fence and not compare. - Shire. It’s usually pronounced, ‘Sher’ most places or ‘Shur’ in the north. Never ‘ire’. I could go into a lot of detail, but for brevities sake, I will just say this. English is made up of 3 main influences, German Anglo Saxon, Viking Norse and Norman French, (500 CE through to 1200 CE ish). Therefore lots of these places had sounds before we came to writing any of it down in a standardised way in the mid 1700’s. The 3 influences conflicted in pronunciation and spelling. So we have this weird looking pronunciation vs spelling as a result. It’s time and history. - ‘Ciderabad’ in Somerset. You probably aren’t as interested in this, but I’ll just shed some light. Baseball and cricket have some similarities. But a major difference is the ball should land on the ground before it gets to the batter, (hitter in baseball). It’s an international game and not all soil, (dirt) is the same. In India the ball tends to react a lot more off the ground, (spin). Somerset wanted to do this with their ground and they have a rather unique soil and so had a go. It worked. So, creative individuals looked at the similarity with India and took a major Indian city, (Hyderabad); and combined it with something Somerset is famous for, (Cider) and created Ciderabad. He also made other cricket references. He is from the state of Victoria in Australia and cricket is very popular in Australia. They are, in modern times a very successful team and one of their greatest players who he referenced was Shane Warne. In North American terms you would be comparing to the likes of Bryant, Brady, Gretzky etc. He sadly died recently in his 40’s, an all too sad comparison with Kobe. I’m from Leeds and a rugby league fan. If the stadium is purely for rugby then they can hold around 20,000. If rugby and football play at the stadium then capacity will be higher depending on the teams and how many supporters they have.

Bramley Moore Dock is currently being built. It will be the new Everton football clubs' new home. They had to take all of the water from the dock and then fill it up with sand dredged from the Mersey and surrounding sea. It is going to be impressive when finished, worth a look on how they constructed it. Plenty of time lapse video's on KZbin.

In Manchester is also the Lancashire Cricket Ground also called Old Trafford there are 2 tram lines through the area. The City Ground has a dedicated tram stop plus another near the Velodrome of Alan Turing Way

Enjoyed your take on our English sports stadia and your American interpretation of our Shires etc. I remember while playing pool in Florida with one of the residents, his pronouncing Leicestshire as Lycester-shire, which caused a few laughs but he eventually got it right. Although it is not yet complete, it is worth taking a look at Everton's new stadium in Liverpool at Bramley Moor Dock, which is just a 10 minute walk from The Liver Buildings. It will be sad to leave our old ground at Goodison Park, in which I have witnessed 4 league Championships, the bringing back of 3 FA Cups and a European Cup Winners trophy however I am really excited for visiting next season, when our waterfront stadium will be open for business.

As a Hampshire CCC fan is was wonderful to see our stadium chosen for the one from the county. Lords in London, the home of cricket, just gives me chills every time that I visit due to its history and significance to the sport but so does The Rose Bowl. I know that I am biased but each time I go there I have a feeling of awe, the designers and the club have just created a wonderful edifice. The view of the playing area is superb but there are woods and a golf course next to the ground which make it very scenic. The problem is that it is not the easiest place to get to and, for full capacity matches, such as England test matches, people have to use the train to Southampton Airport (Parkway) station or if travelling by car, park at park and rides quite some way from the stadium (one is next door to the railway station). They are then bussed into the venue. At the end of play there are queues of buses (40 or more) to ferry them back to the station or park and rides. However, you rarely have to wait more than 20 minutes for a bus as they come back empty and do the trip again.

Kenilworth road would now be in BOTH videos because Luton got promoted. As for the someone's house, the entrance to the Oak Road stand is through a housing terrace on Oak Road. I'm Luton born and bred. I'm not a big football fan but going up to the premier league is a big deal for the town.

A big hello back from Shropshire ladies! Our new ground is very much a "cookie cutter" ground as I believe they're called in the States. The old one was in the town centre, and 5 minutes walk from about 50 pubs. It also "had character," i.e. ramshackle with a mud bath pitch, being underwater for a couple of weeks a year due to the proximity of the River Severn. That did allow for a coracle based ball retrieving system though. Quite useful, considering we've spent almost all our history in the lower leagues, and the ball ended up over The Riverside terrace more times than would be aesthetically ideal!

Rugby league is a very fun game to watch. The rules are a little bit similar to American football (so many tackles/downs then the ball gets handed over). Its a very fast paced game and I think with the right amount of advertising it could become quite big in the US

Nearly, the oldest stadium is Bramall lane (Sheffield United), but top points to you Natasha for recognising the Rose Bowl as a cricket ground (football & rugby we call stadiums, cricket we tend to call cricket grounds)

Bramall Lane is not the oldest stadium. Hallam’s Sandygate is the oldest stadium. Wrecsam’s is the oldest Football Stadium as unlike Hallam’s stadium, Y Cae Ras is a dedicated football stadium and Sandygate isn’t, Sandygate is a stadium that hosts cricket and football games so it’s technically not a football stadium. Bramall Lane is the oldest English Football Stadium as it was built in 1855, prior to Football being created. But they would not play their first Football game there until 1889. Deepdale was built in 1878 and was built specifically as a football stadium and has been used continuously as a football stadium throughout its entire history, so the guy was correct when he said Deepdale is the oldest continuously used stadium. If Wrecsam had not played a couple of seasons away from the Y Cae Ras in the 1880’s, Y Cae Ras stadium would be the oldest continuously used stadium, not Deepdale

Bramall Lane was built in 1855, Sandygate was built in 1804 but like I said, Sandygate is not technically a football ground because both Cricket and Football are played on it. Y Car Ras on the other hand was built in 1807 and is a dedicated football stadium. Deepdale as the guy said, is the oldest continuously used Football stadium. It was built for the sole purpose of a football stadium and has been used as such since it was built in 1878, so he was right about what he said. Bramall Lane was not used as a Football ground until 1889, basically a decade after Deepdale and like I said, if Wrecsam had not had a couple of seasons away from Y Cae Ras in the 18880’s, it would be and not Deepdale. Worst thing you can do is a 5 second google search, it’s very unreliable

The green space behind The Saints (Northamptons Rugby Club) is where I have walked my dogs for 30 years, at the moment its Sirius my Rotty. I live equidistant from Franklins Gardens, home of the Saints Rugby Club and Sixfields Stadium, home of "The Cobblers" Northampton Town Football Club. They are 10 mins away and believe you me, when both clubs play on the same day, parking in our streets is hell on earth. No-one moves their car on match days!!

Hi Girls, I'm from Huddersfield the home of the John Smith Stadium, named after the sponsor a brewery. Not only is it the home of Huddersfield Association Football Club nicknamed The Terriers(after the little dog known for biting your ankles) but is also the home of Huddersfield's Rugby League Football Club known as the Huddersfield Giants. Huddersfield was the birthplace of Rugby League which was formed on 29th August 1895 in the George Hotel (which is still in existence) when Northern Clubs broke away from the Union. This was because the Union refused to share the profits with the Northern Clubs. Rugby Union was in those days played , in the South, by Public School (Private Schools) pupils who still played after leaving. These were the rich people who could afford the kit and playing fields. The Northern Clubs were the Working Class who could not afford the proper kit etc. The Huddersfield Rugby League Football Club originally played at a ground in Fartown (stop sniggering it was literally the Far Town). The ground also had a cricket field which was a County Ground, which means Yorkshire County Cricket was allowed to play there You should check out both Rugby League and Cricket. Did you know that both Baseball and American Football were invented in England.

Wrexham's Racecourse ground is the oldest international ground as wales used to play there a lot. I do think there is a lot of excellent grounds from different places that could have been looked at. some of the cricket grounds around the world are some of the biggest sports grounds in the world are cricket stadiums. Yorkshire is not a county on it's own anymore. It was split up into various counties as mentioned in the video. My favourite stadium in west yorkshire is actually headingley which he did show due to the cricket and rugby ground being blended and they share a stand/hotel which makes for a very clever design.

I think his pronunciation of shire reflects his Australian accent. I think that Natasha has the British English pronunciation correct. Glad my home stadium in Warrington was featured. Coming from a rugby league town you definitely should check it out. Less players than union and more fast flowing game. Rugby league is generally played in the North and Union in the South, but there are some exceptions to the rule. Glad that you learnt that Liverpool is in the county of Merseyside, as that neighbours Cheshire where I live.

Just outside City of London before you get to Moorfields is the playing fields etc of one of the Territorial Army regiment units. A splendid sports ground with not much viewing , I think a local (Barbican based ?) School uses it too.

I'd love to see you embark on a stadium tour of Australia. The MCG trumps just about any other ground, especially due to its seating capacity that reaches over 100,000! It was first built in 1853 and is still going strong today. The home of Australian sports. We have other great stadiums throughout the rest of the country too which is well worth a look. I was surprised at how many stadiums in this video had housing right up against them. Too bad if you wanted any peace on your only weekend off. And where does anyone park their cars? Parking is not normally a key requirement of stadiums in the UK. Most folk would walk (in the 1900s catch a tram) so good railway services are more useful. Manchester City's stadium being in an area now devoid of housing does have large car parking as does Leeds United's Elland Road ( when that was established the terraced houses and woollen mills were nearby , now gone.

The Amex is my local stadium, although I live in West Sussex. My son also works for BHAFC, so is a frequent visitor to that stadium. And my son-in-law works for RR. Wrexham is in Wales though. The standard response when someone says Wrexham is "doesn't it!". There is even a cricket ground called The Oval, at Kennington. Cricket Grounds are not strictly stadiums though. I pronounce it sher, not sheer.

Rugby Union is the original game and is played with 15 men and the same shaped ball and there is a genuine contest for the ball when you restart the game either with a scrum or lineout. There is also a contest for the ball after every tackle. 5 points for a try,, 2 for a conversion, 3 for a penalty. Rugby League has only 13 men and is an offshoot started when some wanted to become professional, many many years ago. It is played more like American Football though passes do have to be backward. You get 6 tackles before you have to give the ball to the other team, so teams tend to kick after 5th tackle. There is no contest for the ball at each tackle or at a scrum. There are no lineouts, a non-contested scrum instead. As you keep possession after each tackle a team rarely kicks until after 5th tackle. In many peolple's opinion, Union is a multi faceted game because it is a contest at every stage whereas League is one dimensional.
