Whoa. I knew right away what this song was about, which I can't always say for this band. When you live through this situation more than once, you recognize the wording and the conversations. "If I miss it, I'll visit. You should take it, cuz I'm not gonna take it." Trying to divide up the earthly remnants of the lost family you love. I just had these conversations last fall again when I lost my sister. You take that lamp she used to love to read by at night in her bed. I can take this book and this framed 5x7 of us at the beach that summer in high school. Wow. The National has really crafted some album, if these new songs are any indication. Love you guys...

@davidpaskey ... Very true & beautifully worded ... I get it, believe me. I just lost another member of my family and a yet ANOTHER dear person in my life that I truly loved 💓 it hurts. Badly. Never getting a chance to say goodbye, saw him dec 17th, we planned on having Christmas dinner together, after losing touch for approx 6 years, he was finally getting his life back on track after years of drug addiction. Had just gotten his own place and I was so happy and proud of him. Stopped texting and calling, I was giving him space, thinking ok he's obviously goin through something I'll wait to hear back, didn't wanna force the issue cos know he's emotional and sensitive. Well I finally checked Facebook after not hearing from him a few weeks and his sister posted that he had passed away dec 26th, which is why I never heard back from him.... He was so happy when he was here. I had no idea that he was STILL struggling with addiction... But as soon as sis told me he had visited a friend in camden, i knew it had to have been drug related, and it was. So sad really... We all think we've got all the time in the world 🌎🌍 and when things like this happen and they always seem to happen without warning, that's the worst kind cos you feel like the rug was pulled out from under you, and you never got to say those things you were afraid to say, nor did you get to say I love you truly as a person, I get you, I understand you, which is what I think we all are searching for. To be acknowledged. To be heard. To feel understood. That the other person "gets us" and we don't have to constantly defend ourselves. Unfortunately, at the end of this merry go round, too many of us make it about dividing up the spoils, rather than what REALLY matters and mattered, which is to love unconditionally and find your tribe which loves you unconditionally as well, even if you're only left with 2 good friends in the end, make it so that you're NOT 🚫🚫🚫 surrounded by fake phoney fraudsters....❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍♥️

@lessismore74 Жыл бұрын
@@brucetrue the only thing that keeps me from agreeing is the line “if I miss it, I'll visit.” it's not my experience that anyone would want to visit their ex for something they allowed them to keep. The ex would be like, “Uh, no. Why don't you just take it." But I have had this conversation in the wake of losing my folks and my sister. Because there's still something that binds you to siblings or mutual friends when you lose a common person in your lives. And it's a way to tell them, hey, I'll see you more now that we both realize life is too short.
@NO_LOVE_LOST Жыл бұрын
@@lessismore74 while I eventually have to agree with your interpretation (been there, too), I can absolutely apply this to a breakup and that hits even harder for me, but that is absolutely a very individual thing (which only makes this song even greater, still). @@Baribrotzer Mostly financial reasons. And I don't mean that as a slide against the National. It is actually often a problem for the eventual newer members because they would have to buy into the company. E.g. a band has quite some recording stuff, equipment for touring. If all of this has been bought by the band in a span of so many years, it would be that you have to be contractually bound to buy out the respective shares in the stuff.

This song....this song gave me memories of my father. I realize it sounds crazy maybe? My Dad's been gone since 1977, and what he endured is unspeakable. This song brought me there - to when he was a little boy, long time ago, in the 1930's, and his life was impacted by a devastating event. I give that little boy comfort, comfort he never had. This song, and it's impact, don't know why - it's Matt's voice, the band itself, the drums, the heart tugging guitars, and the horns! Oh those horns at the end. So melancholy, telling, comforting. I know my father is with me when I listen to this song. I miss him so. Thank you The National for your unique sound, that has so much soul, love and comfort.

I lost my best friend in a car accident several years ago. We used to dig through new music and share it with each other. That was kind of our thing since the beginning of our friendship in the mid-90s. So many of these references hit home on a really personal level because of that. For many years now, the songs by those bands brought me sadness, and I avoided them. The more I listen to this song, the joy I originally remembered from that music has slowly crept back in. Now, I can listen to that music again, without a deep sadness that I had previously connected to losing someone I considered my brother. Thank you. Not only did I become a fan of yours, I got to love some of my old music again, without the bitter aftertaste. That is truly art, to be able to have that effect. You've made me a fan for life

4 years ago I broke my vows to my wife. I let the world get to me. I let my past get to me. In reality, I just found something new, shiny, something that shimmered under the sun. But what was lost was a lifetime of commitments, of words, of sacrifices. In life we walk the streets looking for peace. We look for the safe places in life. Sometimes those places end up being warm arms and a place to lay our weary heads. Sometimes those places look dull, weathered, and don't ask for attention. Sometimes. They are gone. Dig deep. Steady your heels and dig deeper. There, you'll find the worth of it all. Thank you, The National for leaving your blood on the table once again.

Did Matt break up with Carin Besser? Or is this calling on emotions from a past part of his life? Peter Hamill (British musician/vocalist/songwriter) writes lots of sad, emotionally devastated songs - but he's happily married with three kids these days. He's explained that those are emotions he may not feel so much now, but definitely felt earlier in his life, and sometimes thinks back to when he writes.

You guys have been the sweet sadness that has made me feel not alone for over 10 years now. It's a much different perspective listening to your music now as opposed to then, all grown up. But this song is great, and I'm so excited to listen to the album and see you on tour this spring!

Tropic Morning News and New-Order T-Shirt were nice, but this song is just 💔... I love it to the levels of Slow Show and Light Years. It is the kind of songs I need from the National.

Another good track from this upcoming new album. This one feels like a nod back to the Alligator days with the gang vocals and a slightly rawer mix. In my relationship, there'd be no arguing as to who would be keeping the Cowboy Junkies and The Afghan Whigs, let me tell you.

I'm not usually the one to notice the drum lines, but these were beautiful. Love this song, can't believe it's been a year

I am from a very warm country, so firstly appreciate the creativity on snow times❤ Gosh, love all the members, but the twins exceptionally so, and see, for 'moi' one if them has a markedly softer facial look.

It wouldn't be fair - this one line alone captures the state of mind I was in when I got divorced. Knowing it's the right thing to do, yet full of guilt and self-doubt.
