Lyrics: Losing my momentum, losing my mind Not enough to mention, not enough time I can't even say what it's about All I am is shreds of doubt And you don't know how to deal with me You don't know how that feels It all comes apart so easily And you're running out of idea Everything melted in less than a week Watching you felt like forever The lights started dimming and then they went out Heaven came down like a blanket I can't even say what it's about All I am is shreds of doubt So turn on the laugh track Everyone knows you're a wreck You're nevеr this quiet, your smile is cracking You just haven't found what you'rе looking for yet Turn on the laugh track We'll see if it changes the scene Maybe this is just the funniest version Of us that we've ever been I think our feet are gonna slip I think our hands are gonna shake I think our eyes are gonna cry I think our hearts are gonna break Maybe we'll never lighten up Maybe this isn't gonna quit I think it's never coming back Maybe we've always been like this [Verse 4: Matt Berninger & Phoebe Bridgers] So turn on the laugh track Everyone knows you're a wreck You're never this quiet, your smile is cracking You just haven't found what you're looking for yet [Verse 5: Matt Berninger & Phoebe Bridgers] Turn on the laugh track We'll see if it changes the scene Maybe this is just the funniest version Of us that we've ever been [Verse 6: Phoebe Bridgers] I think our feet are gonna slip I think our hands are gonna shake I think our eyes are gonna cry I think our hearts are gonna break Maybe we'll never lighten up Maybe this isn't gonna quit I think it's never coming back Maybe we've always been like this

For me, this video captures the duality of The National perfectly: deep and profound emotions covered with ridiculousness, awkwardness and self-awareness. I love you guys for your ability to capture this state of mind for everyone who feels the same way. In this case you managed to do it both with the song and with the video!

In the most painful way, this song (in my very subjective interpretation) really summarises how my last relationship ended months ago: suffering from depression and insecurity, overthinking ("all I am is shreds of doubt") while my partner realised they couldn't help me or pull from the abyss. When I was in the relationship, I definitely had the catastrophising perspective on it ("I think our feet are gonna slip/I think our hands are gonna shake/I think our eyes are gonna cry/I think our hearts are gonna break") from past hurts and it ultimately reached a point where "everything melted in less than a week." This song is difficult to listen to but as usual The National put so much heart and reality into these heartbreaking situations that it helps you understand and process things a bit easier. Thanks for helping me through a tough time.

I want to express my deepest sentiments for this creation. I lost my father two weeks ago and I feel like I'm losing touch with who I am. Everything is crumbling but the smile must go on. Sometimes I lose myself in the absurdity. If anything I am grateful for the opportunities to escape and make others happy for a bit. This song (the whole album, really) breathes life into my spirit - acceptance and yearning that some will understand where I'm coming from my intentions, and give me the opportunity to find what I'm looking for.

Lost my dad a few years ago. I relied on him a lot and him not being there felt like I no longer had a mirror to see myself with. Don't try to be something or someone. Be happy to be the person your dad loved. Whomever or whatever that is, it's unique to you because of who raised you. Things may not "get better," sorry to say so bluntly, but you'll be okay. It's OK to be broken until you're ready to piece yourself back together.
