We need this when we find words inadequate to tell how we feel, of a sense of awe and yearning when at sea. I have nothing to do with the British or American Navies but the music does bring me closer to those who have anything to do with the sea and serving one's country. A pipe organ accompaniment and a four-part larger choir will have made it perfect.

@@henriettagoldsmith5056 according to your myth, called 'New Testament' in all 4 Gospels (there were many others, called "apocrythas", that tell somewhat different stories, but I digress) we were all saved, when Christ died on a cross, isn't it true? So why even bother now, when the entire business of fortiveness already happened 2 thousand 23 years ago? Nobody has given me an answer that made any sense LOL. He died to save us from our sins, thus we are all saved. Done. Everybody is cleansed and going to Heaven. So...the logical question is : who is currently in Hell then? Who populates the Purgatory? Better yet: What happens during the Last Judgement-- all those who are already in Heaven and in Hell will be recalled and re-judged then??? Can you answer this? Better yet, ask your priest, see what he says LOL. Watch him squirm trying to tackle these simple questions, because none of them knows the answers either!

This is favorite hymn of mine and I like this version. Especially I appreciate the Trinitarian vision.

I went to a naval training school for five years 1945-1949. we sung the first and last verses every morning at prayers and every evening and three times on a sunday. i also joined the Royal Navy and sung it a few times when their was a death. Still make the hairs on neck stand up and also have shed a few tears singing it edward jones

My favourite hymn, I had uncles in the Navies ( Royal & Merchant ) as well as the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. It has always had a special meaning for me.

Edgar Evans. What a man. What an explorer. What a tragic way to go. And to all of those who were with captain Robert Falcon Scott on the terra nova expedition.
