I salute their experience, wisdom, and their courage to conceptualize, communicate, persuade the political class, and then implement the vital and much needed economic changes that our country so much needed. Surely, our country has many other patriots whose intellect, skills, experience, and wisdom can be harnessed for the common good of Bharat. Thank you, Neon, for Ahluwalia vs. Ahluwalia. UPA inherited a booming economy from Vajpayee which continued for some time in their first term because of good work done by Vajpayee. By the end of their second term the growth had dropped to 5% and inflation had risen to 10%. Even 5% happened with huge debt to be paid for by Modi Govt. The banking system was in deep distress. Even oil that was imported from Iran on credit because of sanctions had to paid for by Modi Govt. There were mega scams under UPA. The average growth rate may have been 7 percent but you have to look at where it started and where it ended and what happened to inflation.

Manmohan Singh was involved with economic policy making since 1968 and those policies brought India's economy to its knees necessitating the IMF bailout, with the humiliation of being forced, for our benefit, to follow IMF orders on reforms. India had to send our Gold to England and Switzeland on Girvi. The gold was brought back recently.
@GURBANIKATHA67665 күн бұрын
Former Prime minister Manmohan Singh started off with $700 billions in 2004 and ended his first term with $1.3 trillion Indian economy by 2009. His second term ended with $2 Trillions dollars economy in 2014 which is almost 200% growth despite world financial crisis in 2007. UPA regime was a golden period for growth and development in the modern independent India. Since 2014 till 2023 in 9 & half years GDP has grown to 3.75 trillion a growth of 80%. That is the much hyped fact about growth that it has actually halved since 2014 to less than 3-% annualised compounded. If Manmohan Singh Govt continued then Indian Economy would have been 6 Trillion Dollars instead of 3.75 Trillion Dollars today

The fact that India’s economic policies are not currently determined by a Planning Commission need not be a defect. (India’s former finance minister - I think, he was the second - had resigned his post because of his disagreement on the heavy role of the Planning Commission in policy making). India’s future economic success depends on the extent to which it can achieve structural improvements ( such as eliminating public sector corruption, clean environment, rule of law, public sector rewards based on outcomes, reduction of government debt etc). It can be done.

This economist forgot or did not bring up the major issue of developing all four pillars of the economy and educating the public to prepare for entrepreneurship and privatisation. Without human capital development, the privatisation will end up in pakoda making,. One needs basic technical and analytical capability. Apart from this India had tp carry forward with 50% reservations to backward classes. India needed an educated population to handle imports and match local production. It is because of lack of funds India developed human capital which cannot increase revenue but benefits enormously in the years ahead. He is economist and without financial constraints, the narrative will be different. Actually the GDP during the congress period from 1947 to 2013 is 50 times, a world record. The current govt. with all four pillars of economy developed and major human capital prepared unable to double up the economy in 12 years.
