The New Fly Fisher

In this video, RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth explains what to look for in a good forward cast, and shows the three commonest casting mistakes people tend to make on their forward cast. The film is an excellent instructional tool for improving the forward cast and explains how to easily recognize what is going wrong by watching the loop on the forward cast.

I like the idea of an orange line to practice ...easier to see the loop.... Looked at RIO website cannot see one listed.... is this a special line for Simon for demostration purposes..

Skillfully described and executed. Right to the point. Thank you. I'm guilty of all those. I'm self-taught on the fly rod. Don't understand any of the subtleties or nuances needed with flies, rods, Rod weights, Etc. I'll be watching your videos and implementing them. Many fish I catch out of luck. I keep it simple dry fly fishing at dusk when they're feeding on flies I'm trying to present something they will grab. Sometimes it works. Usually I miss the strike or they are kind enough to hook themselves. I'm a marksman with an ultra-light spinning rod and my barbless lures of choice. I walk up a stream and know there's a fish behind a rock, under an overhang, or across the stream in a deep cut out, target shoot it, nail it, Let It Go. I like being able to drop a fly in there also with a fly rod and techniques. Many times that's all they want is the fly

Don't worry, you will get better. I was the same way with golf, could not stop slicing the ball into the trees! But practice and mentoring really help (and of course watching our videos!). Good luck learning and improving, have a great season!

Practice makes perfect. Took me awhile too get a hang of it. I found out consistency plays a big role on getting a smooth perfect cast. It's not how much power you apply to the rod. Thanks for the informative vedio.

It's a long learning curve. Now I have more good casts than bad ones . I'm not sure if I can mention name of a specific fly line but a good line will make it easier ,and make you look good. I found "my" line for smallstream casting and everything fell into place, trying the instructions last weekend It got even better 👍 Now I look like I know what I'm doing 😉😁

Why?
@cachi-7878
@cachi-7878 5 жыл бұрын
He might be referring to heavy flies...When you cast heavily weighted flies, you do want to slow down and open your loop, otherwise your timing will be all messed up and you’ll most likely hit your rod or create wind knots.

When your casting large or heavy flies it is best to open your loop in order to avoid hitting your rod with the fly which could cause damage. But for most casting, you want a tight loop like simon discusses. Hope this helps explain why

Many of us (especially men) are too aggressive with our casts, very common. Smooth and technically correct, that all the physics that are needed to get a great forward cast. Simon explains it so well. Thanks for the feedback!
