Because Singapore has one of the world's highest rates of myopia, caused by "frequent near-work activities done with handheld gaming devices, personal computers, mobile phones and iPads" according to the Singapore Eye Research Institute. Very few jobs here now demand that no one wears specs because that won't mean you can't employ a huge % of the population.....including even SQ pilots who can accept applicants who went for lasik. Of course decades ago when we were as poor as Indonesia it was indeed true that most people in this line of work won't be wearing specs.

NS is a waste of time and tax payers money. The govt should give priority for them to finish their studies and pursue higher degree or master. After that the govt can engage them as professional soldier or security personnel etc
