5kg is a lot of filament, and making it with PLA doesn't make much sense, since most people want an enclosure to print abrasive materials like ABS/ASA at high temperatures, which would melt the PLA pretty quickly. And printing with PETG at $30-$35 a kg, would mean $150-175, not cheap. With that said, it could be a lot more affordable though if one used PET from recycled plastic bottles and that would be an interesting recycling project. Also, there is a free modular enclosure on printables now.

Cool, but not mentioning that the models cost $48 alone and requiring 5 KG of filament up front is a big no no for me. I think those grow tent/pop up enclosures would be cheaper, even if you were to buy multiple down the line.

I was going to make the same comment. In NZ its way over the 200nzd and for that I can even buy the enclosure from Creality if I want to. I think it is worth though if you have multiple printers then you buy the project once and use it for different designs.

Yeah, better to just get some aluminum extrusion. I can get 6 meters of 20x20 for $65. Only thing is that it won't be as modular, but I don't care for rn. All up including fittings, brackets, panels etc, it's in the same ballpark figure. And much more rigid.
@erickraus1256

I don't know if it has been said yet (I'm not going to read through all of the comments), but when cutting acrylic, or anything that can splinter, for that matter, just put some painters tape over top of it and it will stop it from fraying or breaking free and shooting off at you. Even if you are drilling a hole in metal, such as a car, using painters tape will give you a nice clean hole/cut.

I haven’t cut acrylic on my table saw before. But I was going to suggest a very similar method with high tooth count, thin kerf blade. Also, what worked very well for me while cutting vinyl soffit material was to use an old worn blade of that type, but install it in reverse to avoid the shrapnel affect. Again, I haven’t tried this with acrylic, but it was beautiful with the vinyl soffit sheeting.

I just don't get products like this. It requires a printer, preferably one that already has an enclosure and can print the more difficult materials anyway for longevity and even at that, it takes five freaking kilos of filament to print the entire thing. I can buy three Lack tables for the price of ONE roll of PLA filament and those things come in different sizes now. And that's not even taking the price of puchasing the STL's into account. I think it's just way, WAY more convenient and economic to just buy a Lack (or multiple even), some basic hardware and a handful of printed parts than spend a hundred bucks and literally three months of non-stop printing to come up with something like this. I guess I'm not their target audience.

Great video, but I can't back a KS for functional 3d models that do not include step files, it's one thing to only have stls for decorative stuff, but for it to be a customizable system, there needs to be a backer level that includes cad you can do stuff with, otherwise it's a lot of printing for limited use case -- for the price I can buy some inexpensive 2020, some acrylic, spend 20 minutes in cad and have an enclosure, or go the ikea route, they do realize the time investment to print all the parts is significant, this feels like when you only have a hammer, everything is a nail...to shocking dismay to us 3d printing enthusiasts, not everything needs to be 3d printed.

so, thats really nice and all, but not factoring anything else. with the average 1kg of PLA going for $20, thats already $100 in filament alone.... the flexibility in the system was nice but this isent really an inexpensive way of making an enclosure.. the re-usability point is a great one, and in the long run may offset the initial capital cost.. but i dont see the average laymen hobbyist doing setup changes that frequently that this system would be worth it. non the less, GREAT video as always!!! thank you for sharing and providing a constant stream of creative content!

A neat idea, but not something I can imagine paying for. My enclosure used only 1kg of filament to hold together the corners of wood that I got for free from a big box hardware store (used to tie down their shipments of bulk lumber); I could have gotten away with far less engineering if I didn't want it to look as neat as it does. Using plastic only on the outside of the corners also means heat is no concern.

Well nice video with very good explanations. Buying the complete stl-files for the enclosure and the price for 5 kilogramms filament - we are speaking about more then 320 dollars!!!! Really? YES more then 300 dollars. Not include the time and the energy costs and (if u wnat) acrylic walls/doors (again near 100 Dollars more.....). So i am out - this system is near 95% worthless when i have to spend so much money for an enclosure. For those who are rich enough - ok super. But much too much money for an enclosure for one printer 😞 For my p1p enclosure i payed about 70 dollars for the acrylic parts and print the rest with 1 role of pla filament... but more then 400 dolalrs (with acrylic doors/walls)... NO!

Interesting but gimmicky, esp for the price point involved. For the cost of the files and the materials I can pick up a couple easy to assemble pre-made aluminum tube and ruberrized nylon fabric enclosures like the ones I already use for my printers and laser. One thing I would also add to the final product that I don't see in this preview is the option for leveling legs.

Very nice, great concept - but waaay too expensive: at the end of the day, this is an alternative to a lack enclosure, which is 12 Euro here in Europe. This is ~50 Euros for the files, 100 Euros for the Filament and the work and money to print the stuff - so easily 150 Euros PLUS the acrylic for the walls. This is almost twice the price of the printer I want to enclose and for the combined money I could buy a fully enclosed K1. So please lower the price for the files to Lack-levels and I would be in just for the fun of it...

I made one kind of out of scraps. I had some spare extrusion beams and my neighbor's small cheap greenhouse collapsed from a lot of wind, so he gave me the panals which are great in keeping heat in. I font have a bottom but for the top I cut out a piece of wood with a filament hole and 3d printed a spool holder

Interesting video, but way overkill on the technology. More "Rube Goldberg" than simple DIY. Instead of over $100 on filament, and days on a printer, I would simply use 12 pieces of 1 X 1 quality wood cut to length and joined with about 24 "ELL" brackets in the corners. 3D print the door brackets or just buy 4 or 6 cabinet hinges. Make it in a day, or 2 if you include lunch breaks. But for the sides, if there will be a laser involved, you need laser blocking acrylic panels, not clear acrylic. And I would put doors in front and on one (or both) sides for easy access, and cleaning after using a CNC mill. The idea that you can take it apart and make something a different size ignores the acrylic sides that won't fit and the good chance to break a piece on disassembly. Cheaper, faster, easier to just make a new one with a wood frame.

Really interested in getting this, but I have a question. I understand the enclosure's overall size can be customized, but what's the length/size of the smallest extension ? By the looks of it, one piece looks like it's about 5" in length, so the case's length in any axis can be increased/decreased in 5" intervals ?

Once you buy the file set you are 90 bucks in and if we assume we need 5 kilos of pla 25 to 30 per kilo 125 and the needed acrylic panels will take it well over 250 which is too much for me personally. The only problem is that it would have to sit in a damp environment and as such, filament being hygroscopic it would not be very productive. It needs an enclosure. This is where Google comes in. I mentioned this problem on another channel. And today I got this promoted video. I think I can use this construction design to incorporate the printer and AMS. If you saw this on the street in public, you would walk right past that guy to the person behind him that doesn’t look like he is “amazed by the world”.

Yeah unfortunately you’re mistaken, I A/B test these types thumbnails extensively and these expressions often result in much better click through rates. Which is why so many KZbinrs do them. But I’ll consider finding some new ones.

@@thenextlayerand in your opinion after printing lots of things, are all this parts necessary? Could they have some parts designed differently to save material? Is it a project worth backing or wait a bit longer? I understand its different industries but I watch SplatterCat gaming, he reviews up and coming indie games and he gives the positive, the negatives and he says when a project is early access, green, fully fledge, the goods, the bads and if its a bargain to grab now or rather wait to a new iteration.

Seen this on another vieo and while it looks good, it is kind of pricey for just some stl files that you have to print yourself.

Note when cutting Acrylic/Plexiglass with a saw, place Tape (painters tape works well) over where your going to cut, solves the particle issue. Also, cut SLOW, as in just push it through slowly. Another note: Why pay for Files? That is kind of the stupidest thing I have seen from the 3d printing world is selling a STL file. Reason to balk at this is because your still not done spending money after getting the files. There is still the material cost of said thing, also its impossible to stop files from being uploaded to free sites or shared. Ya the "cost" of designing the thing, but also the designer shouldn't be trying to make money off of that design if he isn't going to sell the product himself. I design lots of stuff myself too, but I do not upload or share these files as I actually make the thing and then sell the actual object. If I do ever upload a design, it will be free, because again, its impossible to stop it from getting re-uploaded to other sites.
