I had great results with mat grey PLA+ from eSun on two Bambu P1S and soon (probably next Monday) an A1 Mini with an AMS Lite to use up my spools (no AMSs on my P1Ss). Currently, I print terrain and even some vehicles/monsters for Necromunda (a tabletop game from Games Workshop that's taking place in the Warhammer 40k universe). Mainly at 0.12 und 0.08 with 0.4 nozzles. Sometimes also 0.2 for hidden parts or where layer lines are even adding to a wanted look. Since I paint the parts, I do not care for filament color too much but mat gray turned out to be a great starting point. For some parts it's actually enough to just use contrast paints without a primer to get a convincing decayed metal look. These kinds of paints are rather thin and almost seem to interact with the material as it seems like they are "staining" it.

My two favorite brands (available in the US) are Ziro and Amolen. They both make high quality filament, produce unique colors that no one else is offering, and their prices are decent. Amolen offers a lot of unique silks, tricolors, and dual colors as well as regular pla. They also sell sample sets for some of their unique lines like their wood line and marble/earth sets. And Ziro specializes in mattes. They have exceptional matte gradients, but they also sell tricolor mattes. Many of their colors are unique to them and no one else sells them.

Bambu ABS GF is one of my new filaments, stronger than ABS and less warping/micro cracking and the glass gives it a mat finish. Especially at 30 for 1KG. Below is from their site Bambu ABS-GF is a glass fiber-reinforced ABS filament, enhanced in both mechanical and aesthetic properties. Compared with regular ABS, ABS-GF outperforms in strength, stiffness, temperature resistance and dimensional stability, while being less prone to deformation and warping. Glass fiber imparts a smooth matte finish with micro-spot gloss, blurring layer lines. ABS-GF is ideal for both mechanical parts and decorations due to the inherited water resistance, wear resistance, durability and vibrant colors.

Silk PLA is not weaker than regular PLA, it is softer but has a higher impact resistance and higher layer adhesion. PLA-CF* < PLA Matt < PLA < Silk PLA. Extremely silky PLA is almost like PETG (including the poor overhang performance). And that dual tone Sovol/eSUN filament is probably the same as sold under Creality and other brand names, I printed a lot with this particular filament and only realised I swapped brands after printing tens of piece with both - there's absolutely no difference, I believe even the part number is the same if you look at the spool. * or other PLA with fillers that (usually) make it stiffer but weaker across layers
@thenextlayer6 ай бұрын
In my experience silk PLA has TERRRRIBLE layer adhesion, actually.
@zviratko6 ай бұрын
@@thenextlayer weird, I would question your print setting were it any other channel :) I usually print it really slow, though, like 30-60mm @220C (but with steel nozzle that's more like 210 on brass). I believe silks are even described as I did by the manufacturers. It's also possible there are completely different additives used for silks to achieve the high surface tension, for example some are close to impossible to remove from a textured pei plate (most of what I use) and I have to create a separation layer. Just finished scraping some of my plate 5 minutes ago :) I commonly use it in place of petg for gears and stuff (as long as it's not under load). Are you sure you mean layer adhesion? Because they are pretty weak for mechanical stuff, gears under load just melt and bend but the layers hold fine.
@thenextlayer6 ай бұрын
Nah, dude, layer adhesion of silk is considered to be the worst of all the PLA's.
@nwimpney27 күн бұрын
I've found that silk works pretty well for me, too, but only if it's fresh. When it gets old it's horrible. I actually wonder if what people often call bad "layer adhesion" is actually the fiilament itself peeling apart within a layer. I have some very old silk PLA which printed extremely well when I first got it. The parts seemed quite solid. I'd describe them similar to what zviratko described. They felt softer and a bit less brittle feeling, but certainly not weak. However, I decided to print something with the tail end of that roll which has been kicking around in the bottom of a bin for a couple years, and it pretty much shredded like tree bark while I was loading it into the extruder. If you kink it, it cracks, but some thin fibres still hold it together, and you can peel it into shreds with your bare hands. This, in combination with the crazy die swell/length contraction suggests to me that the silk "additives" are probably more of a co-extrusion than a conventional additive. (the elastic bits are pulling your stretched out .4mm extrusion shorter, trying to go back to their original 1.75mm shape) It seems to be a combination of strands of relatively elastic material and standard PLA, and I wonder if the weakness that people see as layer adhesion, is actually just the filament splitting between its constituent parts. When I have broken silk pla in the past, it looks almost like splintered/broken wood, and I have a feeling it might not be strictly between layers, but the layer itself splitting apart within the strands.
@zviratko27 күн бұрын
@@nwimpney well, in the meantime I discovered that some Silk PLAs are indeed incredibly weak, like Bambu Silk that just crumbled on slightest pull. I wonder if that's why it's in general considered weaker? Most silks I used are really more "elastic" (tough) than regular PLA in my experience, but maybe I've been lucky in choosing manufacturers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Galaxy black, you’re crazy :-) a little sponsor bias. I think the poly maker actually looks the worst. And the sparkles are too dominant. Really chunky and kind of tacky looking like quartz PLA. Part of the reason you’re seeing Prusa being a little lighter because it actually is a nice matte finish instead of that more cheap looking shiny black like the other two.
@thenextlayer5 ай бұрын
In person, it's actually opposite! The Polymaker is very matte (Kexcelled even more, but it has barely any sparkles)

Also you should have mentioned some exotic filled PLAs, like Francofil Coffee or Scallop, those make stuff look (and smell :)) not-printed and actually different, or compare wood-filled filaments to PLA-CF because PLA-CF is cheaper, stronger and doesn't clog nearly as much as wood, yet looks very similiar... if only it came in brown. But the green one is extremely similiar to colorFabb Vibers/stoneFill (it's same stuff with different colouring).

For texture, I usually use fuzzy skin at a 0.4 to 0.6 on both settings in Prusa slicer. The only part that isn't textured at that point is the top. Rather than paying the CF "tax". I've tried PLA+ CF, and PETG-CF recently, and I haven't found them lacking, but at their price tag compared to a regular filament for an additive that really doesn't do much, I have to say it's not all that impressive.

I don’t think they ship to Israel, do they…? I’ve looked before but ended up not ordering, I think that’s why

Long as your belts are really tight...your layer lines should be minimal as heck...if not try a different printer.

I'm pretty sure black HIPS would be your favourite filament, you might get addicted.

Fancy Pants but more in the wallet. Jayo. Super simple reason. It's descent, they give you 1.1KG, and they're cheap.

Glad you liked it. If I had to pick my favorites from within this list, Polymaker galaxy black, starlight comet, and fillamentum wizards voodoo.

Thanks for the nice video. But can you PLEASE get yourself a hot air gun to get rid of these tiny hairs/stringing on the prints? the macro shots especially look bad and the print quality can easily be improved with a one second swipe with hot air above the part :)

honestly I hate shiny filament, it looks really cheap. I prefer Matte.
