So here’s the thing. The reason Astrid “flips” is because she’s actually a rational, open minded person who once she was presented evidence of a different way of thinking she changes her mind. She has the energy of a kid who really tries and excels in something because that thing is their whole personality. So it makes sense she’s frustrated when all of a sudden someone who doesn’t take it seriously AT ALL shows up and completely outclasses her.

Period...I feel like most people think Astrid is just jealous of Hiccup's skills but that's not what it is. Imagine if someone out of nowhere, got the best mark in an exam they told you they don't care about at all, but you've studied an year for that thing and you've always worked to be the best and to make your family proud (in Astrid's case the village)...you'd find that not only unfair, but quite suspicious too. It's when Astrid gets to know Hiccup, his dreams and his love for the dragons that she switches sides. She admires his heart, honesty and now that she knows his intentions, she supports him because she believes in him and she loves him for who he really is.

@jakemaxgross 5 ай бұрын
My argument has no merit. That is an extremely great point and especially from a teenage perception at least modern day given the context of the film shows how well written it is. But the series matured with its audience until i5s sequel series? From what I have heard is flaming garbage.
@islaythejabberwokky
@islaythejabberwokky 4 ай бұрын
I had issues with Astrid at first when I first saw this movie as a teenager, but now that I'm looking back at it, she really was the most mature and level-headed character in the whole movie. Even after the flying sequence that "magically" changed her mind, she still had valid concerns about the dragons' motives and the danger they posed, and upen seeing the nest and understanding the hierarchy structure, she realized the vikings seriously needed to rethink their attack strategy. So she was already adaptable in that sense. I don't think it was the flying, or the pretty clouds that made her change her mind, I really think it was seeing the deadset determination on Hiccup's face when he insisted on protecting Toothless. She was hostile towards Hiccup before because he seemed/acted like he didn't care, but she saw how much he genuinely cared about saving this dragon and was like "damn, okay. I can respect that. I respect you now." And honestly I love her for being ride-or-die like that.

@one-eyedpete3302

Another reason is that Hiccup didn't know himself before he met Toothless, and he thought that he was meant to be like the rest of the Vikings. But once he met Toothless, his focus shifted, and he excelled thereinafter because that was who he was; still a Viking, just not the kind that he initially thought he had to be. When Astrid saw that he was sticking up for who he really was he got her attention because he learnt himself and stuck up for it, showing her his courage, and perhaps reminding her that he was just as brave as her; reminding, because he was perhaps the bravest in his Village by trying his hardest to fight dragons, despite being seen as clumsy and reckless.

I really like how they did Stoic as a misunderstanding Dad. He's awful at communication and has real trouble with change, but he only ever wanted to protect his son, prepare his son, and make a better future for him. The one time he said something malicious to his son, he instantly regretted it, and the door slam, cracking back open was pretty good symbolism of that.
@tehdipstick
@tehdipstick 8 ай бұрын
What I like is that it also goes both ways. Hiccup isn't good at communicating with Stoick either. He lies, disobeys his father and makes jokes concerning serious matters, like the village not having enough food to last through winter. It does a good job of showing that neither are great at listening, Stoick because he's set in his ways and Hiccup because he's kind of a rebellious teenager.

@novastarburst3939

He's not that misunderstanding than that, Hiccup already lied several times, keep messing around to do like the others when his father tried to accept he wasn't made for fighting and let him be Gobber's apprentice instead. Hiccup wanting to be someone he wasn't actually caused troubles and as a chief, and responsible for a whole clan he didn't have time for his son's ideas. Both actually were wrong and right at the same time. The scene where Hiccup said he should have talk first is the sum up of their problem: Hiccup wants to fight dragons, do everything to do it even if his father forbid him to, and when his father who was worried for his safety finally gave up and tells him he can do it, Hiccup, for no obvious reason refuses and want to do the opposite. His reasons were understandable but Stoick was right to be furious at him.

Honestly my favorite part of this series is that Hiccup loses his leg, and doesn't magically gain it back. No "we found a magical person who healed his leg!" They don't even try to give him some sort of a boot to make it look like he never lost his leg. He stays that way the entire time. Through the next two movies, the multiple television series, and everything.

I love how they portrayed Stoic, he isn't just the cliche stern parent stuck in his ways. They heavily hinted why he is this way in a very natural way. He is a single father who is trying his best, guided by what he knows, which is the traditional Viking way that he and the rest of his people had embraced. So he is totally at a loss for words with his son who does not fit that mould. In the end, he recognized the many ways that Hiccup is different but still very much so a Viking, and made a change.

He's a dragon so obviously he doesn't know english, but he understood when both Astrid and Stoic apologized to him because Hiccup is so apologetic and he learned over time what it means from Hiccup. So when Astrid said sorry he stopped terrorizing her and when Stoic said sorry he revealed that Hiccup was alive. Such good writing

The Vikings' apathy or mistrust of Hiccup's inventions is somewhat historically accurate. 41:59 Just a small clarification: Roger Deakins usually works with Denis Villeneuve. Christopher Nolan usually works with Hoyte van Hoytema. It's a common mistake I guess since both directors have similar looks with their films and they are mostly known and excelled in the scifi genre.

Little fun fact for some animation of the film, when Hiccup first finds Toothless and he (Toothless) opens his eye, that was actually an accident. There were (I believe) two teams working on the scene and after the 'camera' pans over the wing, the other animation group made the eye open. This wasn't intended but the producer liked it so much they left it in. Another bit of unintentional animation is when Hiccup holds his hand up to Toothless to show they were friends. When Toothless moves his head a bit towards Hiccups' hand, pauses, then continues, it was an animation bug. Again, they liked it so much they left it in. It's always fun to learn more about this kinda stuff, especially since it all seemed intentional. Just goes to show that sometimes accidents make things better Also, Dreamworks is working with Universal Studio to bring How To Train Your Dragon to their parks, it should be open in 2025 I believe.

Something I've noticed but I've never seen mentioned is how Stoic apologizes to Hiccup and tells him he's proud of him *before* the battle with the big dragon. It's just a tiny detail that I love that really solidifies Stoic's character and his love for his son; by telling Hiccup that before the fight, it implies that Stoic is proud no matter how the battle ends. Whether it ends in victory or defeat for Hiccup, Stoic is proud of him for even standing up to fight in the first place. That moment wouldn't have been as satisfying if Stoic had said that after victory was already achieved.

I really appreciate Stoick's redemption. Immediately after disowning Hiccup, you see him stagger in horror at the realization and regret. And after he saves Toothless, he apologizes to Hiccup, and insists he doesn't have to risk himself. He's not a villain. He's just a person.

One of the many things I love about this movie is its mastery of the great storytelling rule, Show, Don't Tell. The amount of information this movie gives us about the world and the dragons without anyone explicitly spelling it out is staggering. There were also so many fun fan theories about what we could infer from the info we got too.

HTTYD is my favorite animated trilogy of all time! The franchise in general is really important to me. The 3 movies are great on their own but the TV shows are also entertaining and do a good job of fleshing out the side characters. I'd go into more detail on why this movie is so good but honestly, what can I say that hasn't already been said by the fanbase!?
