All these years later I didn't make the connection that Desmond saw the system failures and thought the whole outside world was destroyed and over and that Locke saved him by banging on the quarantine door. Holy hell... how did I miss that after all these years and multiple times rewatching the series? o.O It really adds to that whole section of the finale. I officially feel dumb now.

+Shaggit While someone could definitely interpret the scene like that, I think it could still be seen as Desmond believing that the world hasn't ended, and that he pushed the button just in time, but that he also believes he could be stuck in the Hatch on his own for the rest of his life. When he hears John banging on the Hatch door, he has the relief of knowing that he won't be alone and that he might be able to share the burden of pushing the button with someone else. However, you could argue that Desmond wouldn't have considered killing himself if he believed the world hadn't ended and that he was still saving it by pushing the button. Also, when Desmond kept repeating: "It's all gone", I originally thought he was talking about his hopes and dreams of a happy life with Penny, but maybe he said that because he believed the outside world was gone. Either way, I don't believe that you need to feel dumb, and I still see it as one of my all time favourite scenes in a TV show.
