Being force sensitive doesn't mean you're a skywalker, it literally just means you've the ability to use the force

Man when I first saw the title rise of skywalker I was imagining they were going to get rid of the terms Jedi and Sith and instead classify all force sensitive individuals as “skywalkers” part of the new force order created and a homage to Luke and even Anakin. No longer used as a reminder of Vader but retooled to a better meaning. The total opposite of what palpatine did to the skywalker name. And the final gravestone of palpatines failure. Probably too fan servicy but that’s what I was thinking to line up with the last Jedi’s message lol.

You know: for all the flak TLJ gets, the one decision I will never knock is Rians wish that Rey be 'nobody'. Every Star Wars fan after TFA was going on about how Rey *must* be related to Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon or Luke or something: seemingly forgetting this exact point. So Rian full on stepping out and saying "No: you don't have to be related to any special bloodline to be special" is something that the community at large desperately needed. (Shame it was marred by a lot of other choices and then JJ...)

@@Zenapprentice 1) Blame TFA on that, not TLJ 2) I'm actually of the belief that the tipping point with Rey in TFA was flying the Falcon. Almost every other scene (Calling the Lightsabre, suggesting the guard, fighting Kylo) make sense if you view her as Force prodigy. Being able to fly the Falcon basically perfectly literal first go is where the suspension of disbelief just goes out the window since: it's piloting. There is an element of Force usage at work of course, but: you still need to know how to fly.

I mean besides Luke/Leia we loved all these other force users w/o ever having known and liked their parents AND I remember after TFA people going "oh they're just doing the same thing making Kylo the son of someone we know" yet at the same time cry and demand that Rey be related to someone known just so they can accept her being powerful. Here's my two cents. Rose and Canto Bight weren't meant to further the plot, they furthered Finn's character. What they accomplish is turning Finn from someone who just wanted to get his friend and bounce, to someone willing to fight and die for the resistance after they've seen the people they're fighting for. DJ serves as a look of who Finn could become if he continues to only look out only for himself. And the reason he didn't die ties into the lesson Poe learns. They don't need any more dead heroes, they need living leaders. Side note: did Leia and Han accomplish anything in Ep 5

@Mr Zampanov "Let the past die" was pretty much directed at the people though. Pretty much tell us the audience to let go of the old and accept the new. Hence why they made luke an old bitter hermit because he is freaking popular as heck and would have stolen the thunder from the new characters. They even go on to admit there was no way for them to add luke that wouldnt take all the screen time from rey or finn so they had to do him dirty. Which is why people complained about luke being this jake skywalker as thats not the luke people wanted to see. This is my opinion and you are welcome to disagree if you want.
@MrZampanov

@@levinabear5234 I disagree wholeheartedly (without malice). Luke is definitely there to hand things off to the new generation, but the bitter hermit part is giving him a character arc in the new series (one that I liked quite a bit). Basically the story of Luke in this movie is the story of the former hero becoming the wise teacher. I liked seeing him overcome the tremendous guilt he felt for a fleeting but important mistake. I feel like everyone can relate to that.

Lmao, these people misinterpreting the whole point of the movie and luke's arc. I constantly see people pulling the 'let the past die' as the message of the last jedi when it's being said by KYLO - the villain who clearly has issues he hasn't worked out - and by the end of the film Rey does the opposite of this. Yeah, Luke at the beginning of his arc says 'fuck the jedi, fuck the past, i'm going to stay on this island' but by the end he becomes the last HOPE for the resistance by standing up to the first order and facing his nephew. Luke mockingly tells Rey 'I'm gonna walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order?" and that is exactly what he ends up doing by the end. He was disillusioned and weighed down by the guilt and shame he felt at failing to teach Ben. Now we have Yoda telling Luke, 'the greatest teacher, failure is' and 'we are what they grow beyond' the latter should be what you take from this movie, and that's exactly what Rey does. She doesn't kill the past, nor does she forget it (she literally has the ancient jedi texts) she acknowledges the past and she has the ability to move on from it. The line essentially means that students will eventually outgrow their master, you should learn from your masters successes but ALSO their failures, and that is the true message of the last jedi.

I’m so relieved to finally see such a positive reaction to this film, and seeing fresh eyes enjoying the film as it unfolds, as opposed to being judgmental before it even starts. The one major negative brought up is the Canto Bight sequence with Finn and Rose, and how it goes nowhere. This has slowly become my favorite storyline of the whole film. On opening night seeing the movie, I loved everything about that storyline, and actually saw the film again a few days later upon hearing all of the hate, just to see if I was too lenient. The fact that their efforts are fruitless was too obvious to be a mistake. We’re used to seeing the heroes embark on an epic journey, but we rarely see the journey of how the ordinary person becomes worthy enough to embark on such a journey. Finn is a coward at the start of the film, and Rose lacks the confidence and conviction of a warrior. This pointless journey they take isn’t about miraculously accomplishing the impossible through convenience, it’s about these two people who weren’t even ready to take on this challenge, falling on their faces, picking themselves up, and cementing their convictions in the process. Finn and Rose arrive on Canto Bight a selfish coward and an awkward, self-conscious, mess respectively Finn and Rose then arrive at the battle of Crait a righteous warrior fighting for something he believes in, And a girl who is done being in the background unnoticed, now leading the charge from the frontlines.

The thing with this movie as compared to Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker to me is, if you gave me separate Rian Johnson trilogy and a separate J.J. Abrams trilogy, I would guarantee you people would gravitate towards Rian's more. Rian, for all the faults of the movie did try doing something new with Star Wars, which is what you should do when given the chance to be a writer/director for one of these movies. And to parrot a RLM point, if this movie ended right after Kylo asks Rey to join him, it'd be so much better both as its own thing and as a setup for the finale of the trilogy.

It's pointless, as others have said and C. (my main reason tbh) Finn is in it. And i don't mean that i hate Finn so he actively brings the story down, i mean the complete OPPOSITE, I really like(d) Finn. Finn should not have been relegated to some pointless B-plot story lmao. He should have been a main part of the trilogy and should have been much more heavily involved, during both this and EP9. It's an absolute joke how his character was treated, and i don't blame John Boyega for hating Disney for it at all.

It gives him a reason to fight for the Rebellion. In TFA, he's an accidental hero due to his loyalty to Rey, but Rose showing him the effects of war leads him to understanding what's at stake. His declaration of "Rebel Scum" is great, and it's the payoff for the whole Canto Bight subplot.

This movie is so freaking underrated. It has flaws, yes, like every SW movie, but the highs are the highest highs in all of the saga imo. TLJ gave Kylo complexity and independence. Abrams' Kylo was/is "just a child in a mask", like Snoke said, Johnson made him so much better as a character and actually used Adam Driver's amazing acting skills. It gave Luke the perfect ending for his arc (and his death was one of the best and most beautiful moments of SW). It has imo the best cinematography of all the movies (including the spin-offs), by far. And it gave the saga something that was missing: boldness. This movie has massive balls, because it was never afraid to take SW to new directions, to explore new themes and to subvert expectations. It was a shame that Abrams got rid of everything that was great about this movie (except, maybe Luke, because he couldn't, because he was already dead) and continued to play safe and abuse of unearned fanservice and nostalgia in the crime that is TRoS. That movie is so bad that it makes Episode II look good. Anyways, this was a very fun reaction, especially because of Rana xd She's the best. And I agree so much with Chris, this movie alone is better than all the prequels (don't @ me). And I agree with what Marketa said about the Jedi's philosophy. The Jedi Order was toxic and dumb af and they pretty much created Darth Vader, it was their fault. The only thing Anakin needed was to see his mom and show his emotions and the Jedi Council basically said "Noooo! Don't have emotions! Emotions are bad. Why do you miss your mother? You're so weird lol".

And I feel like that's _such_ a misguided read of Luke's character, which is why I'm really so jaded by this criticism and people who hate this film. Luke is a character entirely defined by his rashness; he literally almost _refused_ the call to action because he was rash and just wanted to go to Tosche Station to pick up power converters. But his rashness is also a strength. Against Yoda's warning, he rashly decides to go save Han and Leia, out of his love for them. Then in Return of the Jedi, when Vader threatens to turn Leia, his rashness is in full display, and Luke goes absolutely ape, because Vader _threatened someone he loves._ Luke isn't thinking rationally, and is swinging wildly with violent intent. I want you to keep that mental image in mind when comparing it to how he deals with Ben. Compare that to how he handles things with Ben. He doesn't even *swing* the saber, only ignites it and feels immediate regret, just as he mentions. And what he saw in the vision was Ben slaughtering his entire academy - children that were entrusted to him by parents like Han, Leia, and other trusted allies to raise an entire generation of Jedi. There was infinitely more at stake with Ben, and he doesn't even swing like he does at Vader. All the students and their parents - people he loves - were at stake because of Ben. And Luke doesn't strike him. Nor does he even use his saber offensively during his fight on Crait. People need to engage more with the text of the films. TLJ Luke is the most interesting he's ever been, and is completely consistent with the character of the original trilogy. And the send-off he gets in this film is *the* most Jedi act in the franchise.

My problems with this movie: - Rose saving finn. She literally chose to sacrifice everybody in the cave just to save finn, and did so by crashing into him in a way that would have been likely to kill both of them anyway. This is honestly my single most hated bit of this movie because it's treated like she was right to do that, rather than painting it as a dumb and selfish thing to do. About Rose as a character; I don't really care one way or the other. - Like chris says, the canto bight side story was silly and took way too much screen time away from more important things. - The fact that so much of the movies plot was just because Holdo (who, unlike Rose, is a character i do actively dislike) absolutely refused to share information to the point of looking grossly incompetent, and during the resulting mutiny still refused to even just state that she does in fact have a plan. She was a brand new character who none of these people even knew, but expected that she could just pull rank and give orders that by all accounts made her seem like a traitor working against the resistance. That storyline is literally "Pretend to be incompetent > People don't do what you tell them to > Shocked Pikachu face"

The argument that 'fans are never satisfied' falls pretty flat as far as I'm concerned. The fans didn't like it when an entire movie was rehashed (episode 7) and they don't like when a movie completely seperates itself from the main themes of Star Wars and removes any consistency of the characters (episode 8). That doesn't mean that fans are never satisfied, they just don't like either extreme: there is a middle ground, that none of the sequel movies found, in my opinion. JJ Abrams rehashed too much, Rian Johnson wanted too badly to 'subvert expectations'. Obviously the hate that the actress got is not right, no sane person will say that, but as always, how big was that backlash? A small group can appear very large on the Internet. Especially if the media gives it a lot of attention. Often times, the hate some person got will become the shield by 'defenders' to deflect all other criticisms and blame any criticism on something like sexism or racism. Like with the Ghostbuster reboot. Anyway, I liked seeing your honest opinions. Even though I disagree with some of them :)

But let’s think about it like this: If they had found the middle ground, would have people complained about them playing it too safe? Because most likely, yes. You will find that people complain about everything and very seldom does it hold any valid criticisms. The prequels were hated pretty much until the sequels came out and Rise of Skywalker made Attack of The Clones look like a masterpiece. I think it’s all about time and letting people just get over themselves until another set of movies comes along that everyone will hate for a decade or two.

@@mateom1691 While I agree that there will always be somebody that will 'complain'/dislike the movie, that doesn't mean the majority, or a sizeable part of the fanbase, will dislike it. Look at the Mandalorian. I'm sure some people dislike it, but the overwhelming majority of the Star Wars fanbase seems to enjoy it. You misunderstand what I mean by middle ground. You assert that people would complain that they played it too safe, if they take the middle ground I mentioned. But that's referring to playing it too safe, which is what episode 7 did: that's not the middle ground I was talking about, that was indeed, playing it too safe, which is also wrong. That is, if you want to entertain your fanbase. I mean, it's a bit of a broad statement to say that people complain about everything and very seldom it holds any valid criticisms. So that's hard to argue against: who are the 'people'? What statistical analysis have you done to determine that the criticisms of those 'people' are often invalid? The criticisms against the prequels are still very valid, depending on what criticisms you look at: the CGI doesn't look believable most of the time, the dialogue is often very stilted and some characters are pointless or take up too much screentime with lackluster comic relief or poor acting (Jar Jar Binks, young Anakin). Sure, I've noticed that a lot of people nowadays don't look as poorly on the prequels, but I think that's mostly because of the memes: just like the movie 'The Room', it's become a fan-favority for it's weird or quirky elements, for unintended reasons. That's not to say they are now good movies. They are still pretty bad. But story-wise, as an arc, they hold a lot more consistency than the sequels. To name just one element. The sequels are simply also bad and the criticisms of the sequel saga that I've heard, hold water well enough.

@@mateom1691 no movie can be liked by literally _everyone_ , but that doesn't mean then you shouldn't care about literally anyone's opinion either. And in some cases I think it's also important to note that you can do things to make some people like the movie without any tradeoff. When it comes to consistency with previously established rules, it's very rare that you CAN'T make the story engaging while being consistent too. And that way, anyone who doesn't care about the rules still has fun, and anyone who DOES care gets a nice "a-ha!" moment seeing them used cleverly instead of being disappointed by random retcons. The problem is some writers literally have this as an ideological pet peeve, that world building/plot/caring for rules is for losers, character driven storytelling is all that matters and everything else is just stuff nerds care about. That sort of mindset is stupid, but it's especially the worst when you're put at the helm of a franchise like Star Wars, which does historically rely on creating that sense of an immersive world. What was special about A New Hope to begin with wasn't some mind-blowingly original plot, but just how REAL and yet alien it all felt by the standards of cinema and SFX at the time. You throw away that immersion, that sense of a cohesive and expansive world, you might as well not make it a Star Wars movie.

Despite the flaws of the movie, I enjoyed it very much. Now it's fair to say that many thought that it failed expectations, but it certainly didn't deserve the amount of vitriol thrown against it. But then I remember how the first two movies of the prequel trilogy was received in similar (and in some cases, unusual) ways. I believe the difference is the use of social media, which makes it more readily for opinions to be aired, whether good or bad. I'd imagine that if the prequel sequel was aired around the current time, on social media was more mainstream, it might get the same type of treatment. Ultimately, Star Wars is just unusual that way. It just takes a longer for some movies to be appreciated.

My honest opinion as a life long Star Wars fan? Overall this was a good movie and a great Star Wars movie. It made me hopeful that they would finally toss away the Skywalker crutch and go somewhere new. It was the same sort of thing with when Disney scorched earth the Expanded Universe. I was excited that we might get something new and more fleshed out than "suddenly he too was a master of the Force" that soooooo many of the stories were. There were a few characters and groups that I thought were worthy of keeping in some form (Mitth'raw'nuruodo, Mara Jade, Corran Horn, the True Mandolorians, the Null Arcs, and maybe the Zonama Sekot/Yuuzhan Vong). Unfortunately, the movie was horribly received by a very loud and toxic portion of the fandom (not saying that all of the people who didn't like it were apart of that group, just saying that that group was the loudest and helped guide the discourse). It also exposed a major problem with today's fandoms: many, if not most, fans refuse to have their expectations subverted.
@EalainEP
@EalainEP 4 жыл бұрын
You make a few assumptions here that I feel are just an attempt at dismissing valid criticism. Subverting your expectations doesn't automatically mean the decision is good. I'm pretty sure there's even a popular video that details the difference between last jedis subversion and avengers subversion and why one was liked and one was hated. Realistically I think you just gotta accept that alot of people think this movie isn't a good star wars movie
@thewhatness
@thewhatness 4 жыл бұрын
Moreover, the subversion talking point is done to death, and I think it doesn't quite get to the heart of the discrepancy between the critics who loved it and the fans who were enraged. I think the latter have come to expect to be coddled by the familiar, and don't react well to having their preconceived notions of characters/a series being challenged. Mostly, because I don't think many really *engage* with the text, so they frontload their own bias onto characters (especially Luke), when in reality, the texts of the films beforehand set him up to be consistent with what we see in this film.

This was the most corporate star wars trilogy made strictly for money with no creative vision whatsoever. the fact they did this over a trilogy with darth maul as a super powerful crimelord is beyond comprehension. They couldn't even get the basic requirement of compelling characters with all of them being just boring and one dimensional except kylo because he always loses and has a connection to the characters people actually care about han, leia, luke. they could not have fucked this trilogy up more, and subversion with no plan like rian johnson's stupid ass just makes the movie cheap and moronic. it just shows how empty rian's directing really is that he needs to rely on such a tired trick just to move his retarded story along. easily the worst star wars movie sine it caused the next one as well

I pretty much felt the same way you guys felt. Its probably the most entertaining star wars film in my opinion and the humor landed with me. Some of the character decisions and story lines can feel frustrating but I feel overall that this is one of the best star wars movies. It also was heavily ambitious in trying to move the star wars mythos forward. Themes that I have always thought throughout the star wars canon was realized in this movie. 1) You don't need to be related to someone strong to be powerful or even competent in the force. 2) The Jedi in the prequels were very flawed. Their reliance on rejecting emotion leads to more of their number becoming sith, just like Anakin and Kylo. Their belief that they are the paragon of light side force is arrogant and led to their demise. 3) At this point in Star Wars, Kylo's ideals of leaving the past behind, jedi, sith, etc. is revolutionary and needed. If you know anything about Star Wars that doesn't take place in the prequel or original trilogy era, you would know that the majority of wars were started or influenced by those two forces. Both the sith and Jedi have fought for tens of thousands of years. For a peaceful galaxy to exist its logical to believe that both those religious groups need to be left in the annals of history. Believing in the power of flawed religious ideologies and not believing in the strength between people and acknowledging the life of all living things is a theme I feel needs to be explored more in Star Wars and this was the first movie that actively danced with that Idea. And lastly 4) It is very rare for any living human being to live up to their reputation and legend. Luke having fallen into despair was realistic. To expect people to not change and/or falter in 35 years is silly. When the expectation of Luke, both in universe and out, is to be this Jedi god it is near impossible to live up to those expectations. It also makes stakes non-existent when we can just rely on one singular person to save the galaxy. Even in the original Luke was aided by his friends and the rebel alliance. Having luke struggle to live up to his legend and in the end fulfill it as his final act was more impactful than a one man army like many fans were expecting. Sadly most of the other movies and the next one in this trilogy glorifies the Jedi and spites the Sith, seeing things in black and white and not grey as it should be seen. Most of these themes and ideas brought up in this movie were completely dropped in the episode 9 because the fans were sad that their exact expectations about this movie weren't met and cried like children. There are legitimate criticisms of this movie but the behavior of the SW community after this film especially involving the online abuse the actors experiences was atrocious.

1) The idea that the force can be hereditary but isn't always is incredibly banal. Do we really need another movie dedicated to how some people naturally excel where others have to struggle? It's a given. 2) The Jedi weren't forbidden from having emotion. They were forbidden from letting their emotions become a liability. The fact is that Anakin took the quick and easy path, ie repression, rather than genuinely mastering his emotions- hence the 'failure' of his teachers. To believe otherwise- that what they were trying to teach him was really at fault- is to pathologize reason itself. 3) Getting rid of Jedi and Sith doctrine wouldn't get rid of the force, force users, or conflict- but if it did it would be very weak storytelling. I would agree, though, that more ecological and philosophical depth would be welcome. 4) I would agree, IF we had actually seen that on screen. What we got was an exposition dump over a flashback. His 'failure' was as hollow as his victory where this movie is concerned.

Her pulling herself through space is just basic physics. If you think of the force as a rope (like pulling a lightsaber across the room), then think of a rope tied around her hand and attached to the ship. The smallest pull on a rope in space is enough to pull you any length because there's literally no resistance in space. Also when you pull on a "heavier" object than you, you will move toward it. So even if that kid with the broom was in space, he could pull himself toward a ship using even the tiniest force pull. How she survived in space without a suit is beyond me lol, no idea how that sht works.

Rose, Finn, and Poe could have been done better, that part I agree is what turned me off the most, but I've come to forgive and accept A LOT in the prequel trilogy, and the Canto Bight scene really doesn't take that much time in the film. If we can accept the prequels this isn't so much a stretch. The fact so many people don't like how Luke is portrayed and how certain characters act or react is very much intentional. When Luke throws that laser sword away, the movie wants us to act shocked, in disbelief "That's not my Luke Skywalker" because it's not, he's changed after 30 years or so (we are all Rey in that moment), but in the end his spark is renewed. Rian very much knows what he is doing, and he does it well. Also, the fact that Rose, Finn, and Poe mission to save the fleet is pointless IS the point. As Yoda says, "The greatest teacher, failure is." This whole movie the Resistance is on the run, outgunned, outmatched, everything they attempt is a failure, pointless, the only thing they manage to do is to escape with barely enough resistance members left to make the Falcon a little crowded, but the learned from their mistakes, especially Poe, along the way. Ultimately, in the end, they did not fail their primary objective… to keep the spark alive. I really want to chat to people about this movie! Whether you liked it or not (especially if you didn't) throw me some comments or questions to see if we can hash this out in the most civilized way, no blasters! :P

I'm totally up for some civilized conversation! I agree with a lot of what you said here. This is easily my favorite of the sequels and I overall enjoy most of it. Like most, I think the Canto Bight stuff is the weakest part of the movie and it does drag it down a bit, but as you said it doesn't last too long. One other thing that I feel could have been handled a bit better in this movie is Finn's arc. I disagree with people who claim they "ruined Finn" in this movie or that he had no arc at all. He had a clear arc: By the end of TFA, he's willing to go to Starkiller base to try and shut down the shields, but only so he could save Rey, and he even lies about having the knowledge to shut down the shields so he can go there. This is where his character starts in TLJ, and he's once again willing to abandon the Resistance and run to go and find Rey. By the end of movie, he's now accepted his role in the Resistance and is willing to sacrifice himself for the few Resistance members that are left. So there is a clear A to B character arc, but I do think that the journey between those points could have been handled a bit better and we could have been given a bit more reason as to why he changes. He sees a bit of people suffering on Canto Bight, but the people suffering on Canto Bight are suffering from war profiteers and similar shady business, not directly because of the First Order. I think a better decision would have been for them to travel to a planet that is currently occupied by the First Order, which we don't really see in the sequels, and this would have been a good chance for both the audience and for Finn to see directly how their rule affects the people of the galaxy. The more times I watch this film, the more I genuinely come to love Luke's arc. It may be my favorite part of the film. I think it's the perfect final challenge for his character and his send off is incredible. He begins the movie disenchanted with the Jedi, but by the end not only has his belief renewed, but is given the most Jedi death in the saga. "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack." Luke absolutely embodies this quote in his final moments, saving everyone in the Resistance without a drop of blood and without even actually being there. I love everything about that scene. I'd like to know what you thought of TROS. While I certainly don't hate it, I really do wish it had followed up more on the ideas and the general direction of TLJ. One of the biggest criticisms of the sequel trilogy is that it has no clear direction, but it takes three to create a pattern, and it was TROS that sent it ping-ponging back in the safe and simple direction of TFA. If the third movie in the trilogy had followed the path TLJ was on, I don't think it would have really been an issue. Instead, it felt like a lot of TROS was trying to be two movies in one, which is I think was really to its detriment. There are still some things that I like in that movie though.

I personally think that Canto Bight was in fact the most essential part of the movie. It showcases how contributive war-profiting is to this seemingly never ending war and it also both solidifies and radicalizes Finn’s perception of the said war. I mean his character arc was always about being Rey’s sidekick but now he knows that there’s more than just being next to her running away from the chase of the FO. It also showcases how complicity is in fact the most contributive part of both war-profiting and the war itself, and the epitome of that is DJ.

@@Captaincrab77 as an example of a jarring, superficial insertion? Because the problem isn't even in itself the idea of there being war profiteering in Star Wars - you would expect there should be, though Star Wars as a franchise has never been too good at building a solid, believable socio-economic background to its events because it's a bit too over-the-top a story for that. The problem is Canto Bight comes entirely out of nowhere, drops us into a random planet, tells us "here, these guys are the actually bad ones because they're selling weapons!", there's some chase that breaks shit (in a series of movies in which chases that break shit are pretty common), we're expected to see that as some sort of retribution for that evil, and then immediately we move on from there to the next plot point. It doesn't do any exploration of the concept or what it means to the Galaxy. Really, in a way this is a problem with the entire movie's thesis. The treatment of the Force is similar, Luke is disillusioned with the Jedi and all, but the reason why this seems so out of place is that there's never been ANY sign of the nuance you have in real world conflicts or political or religious differences, and even as all these things go on we have the space Nazis trying to kill every single last member of the Resistance, so it's a bit hard to buy into it. It has no impact on the judgement of anyone's actions, it doesn't even really change our view of the world, it's not well integrated in any meaningful way. People who liked it simply liked the idea of Star Wars including something that felt like a jab at real war issues rather than just random pew-pewing, but the problem is that if that jab is superficial and without any substance, all it does is break the tone without bringing anything useful.

I'm totally with you on how they portrayed Luke. In every movie, Luke pouts when he fails. Something happens and he goes off to sulk. He failed big time with Ben and went off into his little corner. And I get the same push back which is basically "He's my nostalgia hero and shouldn't be anything but." To me ( I'm never trying to change anyone's mind), Luke was never that good of a fighter. I think Luke's legend is what we see at the end of this movie. It's what people hear through stories. He wouldn't be the guy to take on the First Order with a laser sword. The most he could do is rally people to the Resistance's cause through hope.

You know - wouldn't it be hilarious if nobody in the First Order had ever seen Kylo Ren without his helmet before this movie? They were pretty serious about that in The Force Awakens, right? Now rewatch the scene from The Last Jedi, where Kylo Ren goes full Pete Wentz and destroys his helmet in the elevator. He immediately gets out and barks at the two random-ass Officers, "PREPARE MY SHIP!" And then he stalks off, huffing and puffing. The Officers share a quick glance, and then it cuts to the next scene. But if it had gone just a SECOND longer, you KNOW the Officer was about to say, "Who the fuck was that guy?"

Most people don't like the Rose and Finn storyline because they set out to do a task and fail; but as Yoda points out 'the greatest teacher failure is'. Finn was a survivor who didn't believe in his cause but when he saw the worst of Selfishness on Kantobite he changed. Also we see at the end of the film that their gesture inspired hope in those kids who will most likely go on to rebel and even be Jedi. Its subversive storytelling but its important to think outside the box

For all it's flaws, I found this the most enjoyable of the sequel trilogy. Episode 7 was a vacuous remake, Episode 9 was a complete mess - at least this one carved its own path and told an interesting story, rather than just regurgitating the usual beats. The middle film of a trilogy is also the one where you should throw a curve ball, and everything gets upended before being restored in the final film ('Empire Strikes Back' did something similar, pissing all over the continuity of the previous film). The problem is there was no forward planning, so the three instalments don't gell as they should and come together into one cohesive story.

I really really dislike the Poe/Holdo and Finn/Rose subplots in this movie, but one thing that's never changed since the first time I watched this was my love for Luke, Rey, and Kylo's story. I know people hated how much of a miserable bastard Luke was, and I get it, but to me that was so much more interesting than him being a zen space jesus, and in the end he still proved to be the best of the Jedi, using his godly mastery of the force from lightyears away to non-violently defend those he cared about. People will disagree, and that's cool, but I personally love what Rian Johnson tried to do with Star Wars. Hopefully he still gets to make his trilogy from the ground up with an actual roadmap instead of whatever they tried to do with this trilogy.

The reason fans hated this movie was because subverting expectations isn't a good thing in and of itself. Star Wars was always supposed to be a spectacular looking but basic (and slightly predictable) heroes journey. Fans wanted a familiar inner framework with new outer shell. What they got was a poorly structured story, that fell into the fallacy of thinking that different equals better.
@alexanderthegreat5649

That's your opinion my guy you can't speak for what everyone wanted. I've heard fans wanting something much different than what we've gotten for 6 previous films, and basically plenty of them wanted video game SW. This is also no knock to your wants if that's what you wanted it's fine but people have different outlooks. What you explained as what star wars is "supposed to be" I've never heard anyone else make that claim it's different things for different people. Some people love the family aspect, some loved the religious allegories, I personally just like the force and lightsabers and care nothing about the nostalgia or wanting inclusion of EU materials and things like that. In fact this trilogy helped do something none of the old films did which was actually like the main characters I never was a fan of Han, Luke, Leia they were all annoying to me so I didn't have the same outlook with that. Nor did I want the same shit I've seen before I wanted subverted expectations, I was fine with the decisions made and I'm not saying to get over it or that it's better than any other film just that not everyone feels the same and wanted the same. Also lets admit that this film did a lot of things that were the same as the OT and no one hated than people care to admit.

@@alexanderthegreat5649 C'mon man, I obviously don't speak for every fan. But having been a Star Wars fan for 40+ years I remember what a lot of people liked about the original movies. They liked the spectacle, they liked the sense of fun, they like seeing heroes actually being heroic and overcome evil, they liked menacing villains and storylines that tied together. And I stand by my assessment of what it was supposed to be because George Lucas himself said that Star Wars was inspired by pulp serials he enjoyed in his youth. The three movies that George Lucas was intimately involved in (Ep 1-6) were very straight forward hero tales. There was no subversion, no "killing the past" no large blocks of superfluous story, no 180 character shifts (between films). I'm glad you liked Ep 8, but it wasn't what Star Wars was meant to be (in my opinion)

I absolutely love this movie. It’s wholly original while still feeling like Star Wars. There are five major and clear character arcs, the best cinematography of the entire series, and the most vulnerable and relatable the characters have ever been for me. I personally believe that the line _"Let the past die."_ is often misunderstood, by the films detractors and supporters. It's just Kylo spouting the philosophy he's latched onto in desperation to get out of whatever shadow he's perceives himself to be under. This film is a deconstruction/reconstruction. Showing how things can go wrong but it also highlights why things should work out. That perhaps the best answer to disillusionment is to reconcile and make peace with whatever it is you've lost faith in, even if it's inside yourself. Since those who don't might only make things worse. Especially if that stance rooted in bitterness. It's a far more hopeful message then some are willing to give it credit for. Which is why I also believe it to be superior to the game KOTOR 2 which had similar deconstructionist themes, but fell too often into author tract and bleakness to be considered a fair argument in my book.
