Here we go guys! back again with more of The Expanse. My apologies for the late upload I explain the reason why in the beginning of the video. Today we watch Season 3 Episode 2 titled IFF. Man oh man was this an episode that started and ended with bang. Finally the crew meets Avasarala!?!? What are your thoughts?

Something I have always loved about The Expanse is that they make gravity/acceleration a character in the show. It can work with you, or against you, and it can change sides at the drop of a hat. They play with it so well while respecting better than any other show the reality of space and having to reverse thrust to slow down, and it not being like airplanes. Depicting it so realistically and using realistic military tactics just makes this show come alive.

That whole battle scene was insane. It's at least equal to CQB & the assault on Thoth station. I didn't see those crazy missile tactics coming at all. But it makes sense that missiles in the future are a lot smarter, like drones. ( I THINK they were nuclear warheads because the Razorback's screens kept getting knocked offline due to an EMP, which only comes from nukes AFAIK. Nuke blasts are much smaller in space ). I loved the depiction of extreme G-forces on everyone involved from Avasarala to Prax & Amos. Next time secure those damn lockers!

Yeah, they were plasma warheads. The EMP from nuclear missiles comes from the radiation ionizing the particles in the air. But in space, there's no atmosphere, so little to no EMP.

I mean, it's not necessarily EMP but rather interference caused by the explosions messing with sensor readings. Also, the reason why the missiles spread out is to avoid PDCs being able to lock on to the missiles and eventually the Roci (Contorta). And because Martian ships are superior to UNN ships, it's likely that the UNN ship was blinded by the interference and the Martian corvette was less affected by the interference when making the maneuver to disable the UNN escort ship. Either that or the Razorback's sensors aren't sophisticated enough to operate with that much interference and as a result the ship is completely blinded as opposed to military sensors.

nehorlavazapalka + When it comes to blast wave propagation, nukes are NOT as powerful in space. Without an atmosphere you don't get a wall of high pressure powerful enough to knock over skyscrapers out to distance. You DO still get the blast particles made up of the weapon ( which is the same in any environment ) but the overall blast effects are greatly reduced due to no atmosphere. EMP is also greatly reduced because of no EM field of a planet to propagate it. The ionizing radiation, however is much, much worse precisely because there's no atmosphere to absorb any of it. Ship crews could be lethally irradiated beyond treatment & would die in hours. I imagine one tactic to survive a nuclear detonation would be to turn the ship so the drive cone is facing it. That way the crew members near the top would have many decks below to absorb enough of the gamma rays that their exposure wouldn't be lethal. Passengers & perishables down below are fried, though. But to do MATERIAL damage to a target in space a nuke pretty much has to touch it with it's plasma fireball. They detonated the remaining missiles in front of the UNN ship which temporarily "blinded" them by taking out their sensors and cameras via the EMP blast (you saw the other missile explosions doing the same to the ship in which Bobbie and Chrisjen were, and their screens going blank every time). And then after the explosion, and as the blast wave was still expanding they used the "backwards" momentum of the Contorta, (turned off the engine so they looked like debris falling backwards) they fell back to the UNN ship and then quickly used the manoeuvring engines to turn towards and fire on the UNN ship before they could get their bearings again. It was a pretty dope manouver since the UNN ship couldn't slow down or manouver in time to avoid the or fire back. Initially they fired 6 missiles to act as "protectors" to the Razorback (Bobbie's ship) and every time UNN missiles got too close a couple of them would peel off and fall back, detonate and explode to take them out with the EMP/concussive blast. Apparently they used this tactic in the book but much much later on in a different situation, and not this early.

some other people have mentioned what they were doing with the missiles - setting off a screen to blind the enemy ship and the enemy missiles' seekers. the missiles pacing the Razorback were to peel off and intercept enemy missiles if needed. One other thing I thought was cool though was the flip at the end when they took out the U.N. ship's engines - that was in slow motion just so we could see it. As you saw when they sped the footage back up, the ships are literally hundreds of miles away from each other in seconds. That's why so much of the maneuvering and firing sequences are pre-programed in ships computers. There's nowhere to hide in space except by just powering down so you don't show up on sensors, so most combat begins with missiles, far beyond visual range. If you notice, Holden says they still have five minutes until depressurization even after the missiles start flying - they're a long way away. (If you remember from Thoth station battle, they depresssurize and store the air in compressed tanks both so they don't lose it all of the ship is breached and so jets of air leaking into space don't spin the ship around.)Much like modern "wet" navy tactics, it's all figuring out how your x interceptor missiles can deal with y incoming enemy missiles, when both have electronic countermeasures and trying to lock onto targets. Holden had to blind the U.N. ship before he ran out of missiles. Most battles in the Expanse are settled with missiles for a long way away, and sometimes rail guns at mid ranges. It's very rare for ships to survive long enough to get in range to use their Point Defense Cannons as offensive weapons like at Thoth - they're meant for missile defense. Just to add something to what you said. I love that after using the missiles to blind the view of the UNN ship we see the Roci going into the flash of light front first and when it comes out the other side it's midway through flipping the ship the other way to use the engine (drive?) to decelerate in order to not go pass the UNN ship and hit the target they want to fire on.

Rana, I think the thinking behind the names of some of the characters is that given centuries have past from the present day, cultural mixing is far beyond what it is now, and so names have become more dissociated with particular ethnicities and are more readily spread about, which makes a lot of sense-hell, most names that English speakers use today aren't native to English but have come into the language from cultural mixing throughout the centuries (truly English names sound ridiculously archaic to modern ears, with few exceptions that linger on). Those trends will inevitably continue, to a greater or lesser extent. So I think the thinking behind the name is similar to the thinking behind how just casually they portray Anna's home-life-it's all about hinting at the societal trends that have progressed in their idea of the intervening few centuries between now and the show's setting.

A lot of 2nd generation Asian would have a first name in the native language they emigrate to and then follow by a middle name in their native language. Like the Actor for Prax, his first name is Terry but it's very likely he has a Chinese name. I kind of suspect that is what is going on with the name Praxideke is an amalgamation of western and chinese name.

I think the reason they were close enough together is that Rocinante never really left the Jupiter system (left from Ganymede, never got on its way to Tycho, was headed to Io), and Mao's ship was also taking him to Io. Id thought the large distances involved made this less plausible, but a steady 1 g burn can get you from Earth to Jupiter in about a week, as best as I can work out.

The missiles did not freeze, it just looks that way cause everyone is moving. They are guided plasma missiles that stay close to the razorback to protect it. Kind of like if motorcycles were around a big truck all moving at the same fast speeds on a highway and then smashing into any other incoming motorcycles to protect the truck .. if that any made sense to you guys lol...

those missiles .. seen what they were capable of doing in previous episodes (one is shown to be able to fly to the sun from the belt.. so they are long range and with complex navigation systems) are nearly like "kamikaze drones".. unless in atmosphere a space missile can acelerate as much as its engine allows ..or less ..and if they can cut the engine it can fly arround in space or coast for long range as long as it has reaction mass.. so its absolutelly posible if they allow such control to have them keep formation arround a moving target and when ordered change course and fly to another target ..they only needed to do 1G to keep up with the Razorback .. the books make clear they are capable of inmense aceleration as they are esentially a mini-ship with a miniaturized epstein drive , RCS, guiding systems and the warhead

So... the .... blech.... Contorta... fired a group of 8 missiles "at" the Razorback. 2 of them went ahead and detonated to blow up the 2 missiles that the UN originally fired at the Razorback. The other 6 surrounded the Razorback to create a defensive system; if the UN fired on the razorback again, one of them would peel off to intercept in the same way those first 2 did.

Worth noting, the six missile were "hugging" the Razorback so closely because at that distance they'd look like a single ship, preventing the UNN cruiser from realizing what was going on and just launching 4 sets of missiles at back-to-back. Holden timed the first missile intercept so the UNN ship wouldn't see the other missiles merge with the Razorback on sensors.

Honestly Holden made the right call. I want them to save the razorback. But honestly for all they knew on the ship it was just 2 random martians, and to help them they had to risk all their live to fight off a way bigger earth ship. Holden and Amos did not want to take that risk. Noami did because she thinks going to Io is even more dangerous. Alex want to help because "martian duty". And Prax was the tie-breaker because he felt guilty so many people were helping him and he couldn't help anybody else. Bobbie&Chrisjen got really damn lucky.

The battle with the un vessel wasn't an ability of the ship. Ir was just cinematic slow motion. You have to remember the high velocities of the ships moving in space. They were both burning towards each other at a high rate of speed.

Amos had air. If you properly disconnect the hose at the helmet, it seals the suit and the hose retracts back into the wall. Prax's hose was forcibly disconnected at the wall mount, which allowed all of the air in his suit to instantly decompress and escape into the vented compartment since there was no seal.

missiles in space are all heat-seeking, as the only thing that gives of heat in vacuum is the body or the engine of a ship, so torpedoes are set to detonate whenever they sense that they`re close enough to a ship`s drive to destroy or cripple them. so the roci`s torpedoes exploding into a cloud of superheated plasma will do the trick to trigger them. also as we saw on the razorback such an explosion blinds all your sensors if you`re too close, meaning you can`t react in time if your enemy has turned around and can come at you fast enough. put those together and you have holden`s strategy.

Couple of problems with that theory. One is that the missiles send by Rocci ignored the Razorback and went to detonate behind it to create a cloud of radiation. It didn't go for the heat of an engine because if it would done that, Razorback would been destroyed instead. Also there are other thing that generate heat in space except engines of a ship so a heat seeking missile is good but it maybe backfire and find your ship instead .Imagine having a space battle near a planet that like Earth emites quite a lot of heat or near the sun. The missiles would act very chaotic . Also there is a problem that it would be way to easy to trick a missile to detonate near a decoy that emites lots of heat. It would make them useless. I think they are more like laser guided . The explosion messed up the sensors of the missiles that is true and most certaintly made them lose lock of the target and either autodestruct or they exploded at the last known location of their target.

Missiles in the future would probably have multi-spectrum targeting ( IR, RADAR, LIDAR, datalink all fused together via AI ) but running headlong into a hot plasma cloud at hypervelocity might've damaged the sensors & guidance enough that it triggered a self-destruct. The Roci didn't collide with the cloud so much as it slowed down & allowed the cloud ( cooled off by then ) to catch up & then they maneuvered through it.

addick land that's not exactly the case. These missiles are extremely smart, and can be programmed, or redirected during flight. They use IR (heat), LIDAR, radar, etc, so that one jamming option cant stop them (like flares or chaff). Their onboard computers are super smart, which is why they just have to rely on PDC's rather than jamming

There are others out there. Normies I think are the most fun to watch because their reactions and emotion are very similar to what other viewers go through - enthusiasm and humor is great. But there are some others with very detailed reviews. Not sure what the etiquette is for recommending other review and reaction channels so I won't specifically name any but they do exist if you spend a little time searching. Missed the Normies during the airing of seasons 1 and 2 - but glad they went back and reviewed. Has been fun and interesting - and glad they are here for Season 3.

You're right there are some nice reviews out there, I watched some of them. However it is slightly different from pure "live" reaction like the Normies do. And I think it lacks of these kind of "live reaction" of the Expanse which would make a better "advertisement" for the show, as you can actually see (I mean concretely) how is the show. Reviews are more relevant for those who watched the show while live reactions can attract new publics. I may have missed them, but I haven't seen real live reactions other than the Normies on KZbin so far.

You don't have to literally watch the show live to count as watching it. Leave it on in as many houses as you can, adding to the figures all the more-the system is dumb, it can't tell that there are no eyeballs there (so far :P). You can ignore them all and then just watch the Amazon version as soon as it goes up to get the best experience (uncensored and all that-I noticed you had the censored dialogue in your episode 1 reaction). That way you don't have to be frustrated by ad breaks in your reaction. I think it'd make for the most enjoyable experience.

The crew sent their missiles toward the UN ship and exploded them in a group before the UN ship fired its point defense system so the large grouped explosion would both blind their sensors and provide visual camouflage. The crew ew through the cloud engine first - I think - to protect their own sensors. Then before the UN ship could react, they fired missiles, shearing off two engines (and probably damaging the others.

To be fair, he had a few things stacked in his favor. 1. Martian ships are more technologically-advanced than UNN ships 2. Sean Mumford the UNN ship was a battleship that severely outclasses the Roci. Roci has aprox 12 torps and 6 pdcs and no railguns. The UNN ship has two massive railguns min 40 torps and good pdcs. Ofcourse a ship like the donnager would destroy the UNN battleship

To explain the missiles. In the beginning of the fight Rocinante was pretty far, the whole chase must have taken at least a day or more (reallistically definitely more...), and missiles are way faster than any ship. So if in the beginning of the chase the UN ship fired more missiles, it would reach Razorback sooner than missiles fired form Roci in the same time. Thus, in the first shot they they sent more missiles to protect Razorback in the meantime, before Roci would be in effective range. Whenever the UN ship fired missiles, one of the missiles around Rozorback went to intercept them (exploded very nearby to the UNN missiles, casing them to explode too). The explosions always turned off most of systems, especially radars, which Roci used in their final maneuvr to take out the UNN ship, as the UNN ship couldnt see them through the "cloud" As for Errinwright, after he pulled the things in the end of S02, he doesnt really now have any other choice than to act the way he does. Because if Avasarale manages to escape, and starts to spread the truth about him, he is likely going to be done...

based on a hugo nominated sf novel and they are following the books - i keep telling my friends on fb this is the best but ive only gotten one to watch it and read the novels so far. Syfy had horrible ads for it early on - they were so bad i didnt watch season 1 till it was on amazon prime and im a sci fi fan. Then i read the novels and was hooked.. They should have pushed the fact its the best selling novels being literally filmed. Its as good as the first season of the BSG reboot. Im also convinced its going to be cancelled because i like it so much lol

There's a lot that oftens get overlooked about Errinwright. Earth has the numbers, but Mars has the technology. Any war would be a stalemate and no one will win. So Errinwright raised to believe that Mars will attack Earth the moment they have an advantage. His work with Jules was a way to give Earth the advantage if Mars was to ever attack. He would have been looked at as a hero of everything went according to plan. Julie screwed everything up and set all this into motion.

afaik they used the remaining torpedoes to create a sort of smoke screen so the erinwright would not see them coming. the show has already shown that the ships have little pressure jets that are used to turn ships in different directions. so they probs used that to realign to shoot the torpedoes into the erinwright's thrusters. no thrusters? the eringwright can't chase the razerback.
