I've built up a few competition cars and any time they have had power steering it has been the first thing to go. Not for power or anything, I just hate the vague feeling of power steering. Lucky for me though most of the cars have been so old there have been manual racks available for a straight swap. Haven't seen it done this way before so cool to see something new.

It sure can bud but as I've mentioned before manual racks have more turns lock to lock which for racing means you have to turn the wheel more to turn not quite as Racey. Check out my other vid on if power steering make you slower it explains a bit more :)

@jameslovett6751
@jameslovett6751 Жыл бұрын
Ahh thanks. Do the ribbs matter as well? What happened was that the rack ram rod snapped which somehow has made the pump pully snap off from inside the pump. I've disconnected the ram from the rack. The steering now turns, there I no belt connected through the other pulleys though now due to the pump pully movements, all I need is a shorter belt which will bypass the pump!

Does anyone daily drive without power steering? What’s it like? My whole power steering system needs to be replaced and it’s really expensive. Deleting it would be cheaper and make it easier for me to run inter cooler piping, I just don’t want to screw myself over.

Mate I can tell you now I wouldn't do this to a daily. This car is a dedicated race car that can never be registered and even with its small wheels in the pits you have to muscle the steering wheel, it would be shit with a heavier car with a bigger engine.

Rather than cutting off the plunger disc thing couldn't you have just taken off the oring and teflon ring and then it wouldn't have been air tight or rubbed against the walls of the housing?
@TheNuggetProject
@TheNuggetProject 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah mate probably could have but since i was converting it, it only took another couple of minutes to cut the plunger off as it's just another part that doesn't need to be in there, so it might as well come out. getting it apart is the hard part, so once you're in there it's easy enough to just get rid of it :)

I did this aswell from memory it's was a little light after but not much different compared to just looping over the hoses. Also allows a better corner weight distribution (slightly). But I guess it all adds up. Also keen to see Matts experience and thoughts.

Mega bummer! Sorry to hear that. I'm weighing the pros and cons of ditching PS. Unfortunately steering effort is really important because all of the races I participate in are Enduros. I'd like to get rid of it but I don't want to make the car too hard to drive for 2 hour stints. Hope you at least get to knock out more projects on the car while you wait.
@92billly
@92billly 4 жыл бұрын
@@Maxdamilli0n Fair enough. Personally I've done a few enduros and the first one yeah my arms felt a little sore by the end of the weekend. Second time I got used to it and don't feel sore any more. Personally I prefer no power steering because the steering feed back is much clearer and also on high speed corners e.g turn 1 at Phillip island the car feels much more stable/controllable without PS. If your really concerned with input effort, can also try a normal manual rack and or a larger steering wheel diameter.

@@TheNuggetProject yes that's what I was thinking. Anyways, my car is pretty heavy in the front and I don't think the current ratio is good for non power steering. Shouldn't really be that random, just not lazy and entitled where I feel I need power steering.
@Force1Com
@Force1Com 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheNuggetProject plus on my car, 93 camry, it uses the power steering pump to turn a hydraulic cooling fan for the engine, which is way past random, lol. I'd kind of like to get away from that, and this power steering rack has also been replaced before and is leaking again as well.

Is there any real benefit to fully stripping the rack rather than just looping a pipe?
@TheNuggetProject
@TheNuggetProject 3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, looping the pipe will work for sure, the benefit is, but removing the seal, cleaned it out and greasing it properly means you get a proper manual rack feel, if you still have the seal in there every time you turn the steering one way or the other you are pushing either remaining oil or air around the system and can get a non natural feel from it, by taking this all apart you're getting proper feedback from the tyres without any intervention of the parts left in the sytem. It's not much and most people just loop the pipe but i like to do things properly and it cost me absolutely nothing but some time in the garage :)

@TheNuggetProject 3 жыл бұрын
@@sausagebuttiesdw94 Yeah absolutely! whats the plan for the swap? also later on you can always run an astra electric power steering pump, really popular for swaps, can put it just about anywhere and make up custom lines, you can control the power to make the steering heavier or lighter and don't have to worry about trying to run accessory belts to a manual pump. My mate Benrys with his LS2 powered S14 runs one and it's awesome :) just an idea for later on once ti's all in and teething issues are sorted!

is there a difference in steering effort from a disconnected belt vs fully depowered steering?
@TheNuggetProject
@TheNuggetProject 3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, whether it can be felt or not i'm not sure, but technically yes, as when you just take the belt off the system is still full of power steering fluid, when you move the steering from side to side that plunger is pushing fluid around the system so you are fighting the fluid, when you fully remove that plunger and all the oil you are converting to a full manual rack and not fighting against any of those things :)
