Convert Your Car to Manual Steering in Under 2 Minutes | Two Step Tuesday
There are advantages and disadvantages to everything in life. Deleting your power steering is one of those things where you really have to weigh the pros and cons. The engine bay will be super clean and your road feel while driving will improve, but it will require substantially more effort to turn the wheel when stationary. If your car is your daily and you don't plan on using it as a show car, I DO NOT recommend this modification. If your car is your fun street car, show car, or race car, then you cannot go wrong with this mod.
The next logical question is, "why don't I just get a manual steering rack?" Well... they're expensive and hard to find. Also, swapping in a whole new steering rack is a lot more difficult than installing a single AN line. Lastly, the power steering rack has a quicker ratio which means that smaller steering inputs = more change in direction. This also means that a manual steering rack would be better when stationary, but worse when in motion. A looped power rack is the way to go.

Miata! But instead of looping the steering rack I disassembled the whole rack cleaned all the old fluid and grease out used new grease in the rack. then sealed all the ports and reassembled.

Don't you need to worry about all the air within that line? I would think that line should be full of fluid and have as minimal air in there as possible.

GrimDonalbain it doesn’t really matter if there is air in the line. It just matters that there is some fluid to lubricate the internals of the rack.

To anyone wondering the looped systems are a way to delete the power steering pump, belt and lines. It does not make steering better in any way. It's a bitch to turn at a stop and very heavy even while driving around. You will also have some slop in the steering from the non pressurized pinion. If you want you can swap in an oem manual rack or you can remove the rack/pinion, weld the pinion solid, cut the pressure seal inside, pack with grease and reinstall. This will give you decent steering from a stop and very nice steering once you start moving. I only loop racks when necessary for a specific build or time crunch. If you are not on a deadline of some sort remove and disassemble. You will be glad you did in the long run!

Thanks Buddy, was wondering whats a loop. I have a civic 4 door with hydraulic ps, its leaking and expensive to repair, i dont drive that much, should i just remove the reservoir, pump and lines? Do i need to put a loop or can skip it?

The big reason why people do it is because it adds horsepower. Less wear on the crank when you delete the belt and less weight when you delete the pump

Did a full manual rack swap in my ek. Feels better than a looped system. Looped is definitely still a good choice though!

Boosted John refine movement has a fantastic video on power to manual conversion in the “correct” way. Cause the main issue with looped lines is the pressure that can build in the power rack. If you want to keep the quicker ratio but want a more permanent solution I’d definitely reccomend checking their video out!

You may not be aware of it. But there’s also a torsion rod or bar in all power steering gears. That will leave a rubbery feeling when it is used without the pressurized oil feed. Good drivers will feel the difference between an actual manual steering system versus a bypassed power steering system

Mine has deleted PS. I love it and not once have I regretted it. I have a 1994 EJ2. completely gutted and cut so it should be around 2200 with me in it. At those weights the only time it’s close to being annoying is parallel parking. At 100+ MPH the car feels like a feather floating on the road so I can only image what it would be like if it still had PS.

Yes, just out of curiosity: what is the benefit of converting your power steering rack to manual steering? A heavier steering doesn't mean sportier steering, even GT3 race cars have power steering that can be turned with 2 fingers today. Without power steering driving your car legit turns into a workout, it's just no fun anymore. There is tons of bump steer and you can't steer with one hand anymore unless you're a chronic masturbator.

I want to make it so I can throw a valve (or have a computer throw a valve) and go manual. Save fuel over 20km/h. Or maybe I should replace the PS pump on my 07 Kia Cerato/Spectra with an idler pulley, and use an electric PS pump and (when adding AC, as my car does not have AC) an electric AC compressor too.

I'm really hoping the 17k people who watched this video didn't do this. Looped steering racks feel bloody horrible and are notch, especially without some way to release the pressure difference when the temperature inside the rack changes. If you really want to keep the standard rack, take it apart and cut the centre divider out. Greg Peters did a good video on it. But a manual rack has a slower ratio to increase leverage. Trying to park with a manualised power rack sucks balls! Just get a manual rack.

At last some one talks sense. This method is only for fools. Do the job right, take it to bits, remove the center plunger, retention the shim properly, use a torque wrench.. DON'T play around with your steering if you don't know what you're doing.....

Its not the same. You will still have all that extra liquid fighting against you when you try to steer the car; adding extra resistance. The best and more expense way, is to actually remove the power rack and install a manual rack. I've actually tested both methods on my car; the manual rack has better steering response and more control of your car than the deactivated power rack. But that is just my opinion.

The best option that no one does is keep the power rack ratio but instead disassemble it to cut off the seal in the center which creates drag and then weld the pinion to reduce any slack. Once reassembled without adding fluid it only takes a few more pounds of pressure to turn than a power rack. Check out the Miata rack depower for reference
