Thanks, I needed this. Yesterday at church we had yet another "and now I'm free" testimony. My thoughts went immediately to "your mileage may vary". So grateful that you acknowledge what the Bible teaches that sinless perfection is a lie.

I believe this with all my heart, I always try to think in every circumstance who am I in CHRIST MY LORD. Then I remember who GOD is and what HE has done and what HE has promised to do and that HE will do what HE said HE would do. Then I remember what the Gospel is doing in my life because HIS WILL FOR ME IS MY SANCTIFICATION!! This helps me remember that because of the death, burial and resurrection of my LORD AND SAVIOR I do not have to live in the bondage of my sin any longer. This helps me in my confession and repentance of my sin. The HOLY SPIRIT doing HIS work in me constantly even when it hurts! This I am very thankful for! For me to live is CHRIST and to die is gain! The most encouraging part of the sanctifying process is that my salvation is teaching me to hate my sin because sin keeps me from resting in my savior! I am definitely looking for the sure hope of my LORDS return! Love you brother s! I can only love GOD because HE first loved me and gave HIMSELF for me because GOD IS LOVE!!!!!

Is that not what Paul prayed for three times? But God said, my grace is enough. That is how I feel.

I think the error for both sides is not putting Romans 7 in the context of the book. If we were not capable of putting off the old man, we would not be commanded it. The Holy Spirit *is* more powerful than the flesh. And in Romans 5, 6, and 8 we see that we can, by Him, mortify sin. But it's never complete. Never perfect. And I never have a moment where anything but Christ in me is enough to live as Christ calls me. So what then Romans 7? Daniel Wallace uses the term Gnomic Present. It is a universal truth. It was as true for Paul as it was for Saul. It is an eternal reminder that the best the flesh can do to reform itself is sink deeper in quicksand. Not by habit, force of will, our own desire, can we ever subdue the old man. And we will be reminded of this lesson every time we try. But the problem is me. Not God's provision. I can't make the Old Man holy. But I don't have to rely on it either. That's my bad. Not God's lack. So yes, we do it. We will do it all the time. We do it without realizing often. But it's our failure to rest and rely on Christ and His Spirit. Not the lack of God's ability to mortify Sin in us. Not sinless perfection. Not even close. Not pietism. Because there's nothing I can do. But it's important to put Romans 7 in its Biblical Theology context before we interpret our experience into it.

You are commanded to believe the gospel even though you can’t without God’s grace. Cripples in the gospels were commanded to get up and walk even thought it was impossible for them to do so without God’s grace. Man is responsible and God is all sovereign.

1 Jn 3 "sin is the transgression of the law"....the law doesnt exist today. You do the math. Paul said "sin apart from the law is dead"...the law does not exist today. You do the math. Paul said "I would not have known sin but by the law"...the law does not exist today You do the math. Paul said "there can be no transgression where there is no law "...the law does not exist today. You do the math. Paul said "sin is. Ot imputed when there is no law"....the law does not exist. You do the math. Paul said "the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law"...the law does not exist today You do the math. Paul said "Jesus was born under the law to redeem those who WERE under the law...the law does not exist today. You do the math. Paul said "its the law that brings about God's wrath"...the law does not exist today. You do the math.
