It helps to remember that you can't find inspiration, inspiration finds you. Inspiration is everywhere. You can write about anything. Everything has a story to be told, you just need to know how to see it. I have no problem with getting inspiration, but I do have a problem with having the ambition and motivation. I write in my journal sometimes and that helps, but making the effort to write isn't always easy. It'll come when it comes. I believe that everything that needs to be written will be when it's time for it to be. If you stress out about it, it will be that much harder. Just relax and let the ideas come to you.

Man you took me back to my highschool years with forced writing and word counts. There is hope for some though. Business degrees have a business writing course which literally retrains you to be concise, clear, and polite. So many people struggled to break the old habbits. It was so satifying to do a writing assignement where you were trying to write as little as possible.

These are actually all very good points. I know my pen doesn’t start moving on its own. I have to make it move. It really does help to just start, even if it’s garbage, and then tweak and edit until you have a masterpiece.

The whole moving the pen and putting ideas out onto something physical, is so true! I've been writing my own stories lately and every time I like an idea, I write it down somewhere so I know thats what I want to work on, plus just typing whatever comes to my brain is so helpful for getting gears turning and ideas flowing, it just works out so well Also that discipline thing?? If I could add something to the advice of “Just Do It”, I’d say start with something short and simple that you can finish quickly. Finishing the project is very important to keep you motivated to move on to the next thing. The longer you do it, the better you’ll get, and the longer and more complicated you can make it. The pandemic really made me feel like "meh" and fostered a creativity block. I miss the times when we didn't have restrictions. 2:45 I’ve related to a lot of things James has said but I don’t know if I’ve related to anything more than this. I actually remember a specific 1000-word-essay one of my teachers made us do in 8th grade. And I’m pretty sure the last 3/4 the essay was me just making the same point over and over to up the word count. What was even worse was our teacher made us write the essays by hand, so it took a lot longer than it would if we were to type, plus we had to count each word on our own whereas Microsoft Word would’ve done that for us. Even though the last 3/4 of the essay were basically me reiterating the same point in different words, the teacher never said anything about it. She did talk to a lot of my classmates though, mainly because they didn’t even attempt to REACH the word count on their essays.

He'll never see this, but the one issue with making a schedule is that only really works if you don't have anything that can constantly disrupt it. Basically he does this for a living so he has the time to set aside. I work a retail job so I can have food and power and stuff, and the commute and work while not stressful, does leave me a bit physically exhausted. I've found I can't simply come home and muster the energy for 'personal projects' though I try my best. Hell I barely game anymore as I just don't have the time or energy.

@opinion Yeah it's hard to find time when you have so much to do. Right now my work schedule is like 11am to 7pm, and I use a bicycle to get to work. Which takes an hour. My day consists of getting up, biking to work. Working on my feet all day, then biking home. I'll have a few hours after I get home to do anything, usually cooking dinner. I try to write some when I can, but I'm just so burned out from the day. I get two days off, but Saturday I have a stream I do in the morning, and another at night, with choirs/groceries in the day. Only real day I have off is Thursday which I also do a stream that night. Sadly a lot of times on that day I just can't muster up the energy to do a writing project, and would rather just unwind and relax. Sleep in and that stuff. There just isn't much time for me to "schedule" time for a project like he says to do in this video.

One of the biggest questions people always asked me when I became homeschooled was, "Do you have to write essays?" And I replied with, "No because my parents and I don't believe essays are necessary in learning how to write." Everyone would either reply with "lucky" or "you won't develope proper writing skills for life" and I never got why people would say the second reply. It literally makes no sense why writing something long and boring is better than learning how to use the correct words to write as much information as short as possible. When I graduated I passed with my highest scores being in language arts and wrote an actual essay lol.

I know, for myself at least, much of my ability to write is because of essays. Something that is long doesn't have to be boring. Longer forms of writing help to develop the ability to organize your thoughts and how to do edits and rewrites. Usually I start with an outline that I fill out with details that I want to mention, in the order that I want to mention them. This is a great time to add what you had found while researching the essay topic and also to decide what should be cut. Then, when writing, two or three full drafts might be completely rewritten before arriving at the final version. Often whole paragraphs might need to be moved around to get a better flow. If someone had never written anything long, then how can they develop the skills to really write well? Getting a good grade (especially in high school) is absolutely not an indicator of being able to write well because most people are terrible writers, so it doesn't take much to be better than average.

@@armchairarmada I never wrote essays but I still wrote paragraphs of story's I'd come up with and write on paper. I also studied paragraph organization and word placement but for someone like me who's not even the least bit interested in writing or journalism I never really needed anything more than what I studied. You're entitled to your opinion though and I kinda understand what you're saying but I think it's slightly misdirecting and or untrue.
