I mean, it's kind of weird that she would call you "senpai" knowing full well that both of you are 12 and are in the same grade. The actual term senpai means "elder" or someone in a senior position in a similar field as you, so in Japanese (I'm using an example from a video game) someone would say "Mitsuru-senpai" but if you were in the United States someone would say "Ms. Mitsuru" as a form of respect towards their elders. So it's just super weird to me that she kept calling James "senpai" knowing full well that they're both the same age and are in the same grade as each other.
