Description: "Long considered the first American impressionist, Theodore Robinson was born in Irasburg, Vermont, but spent most of his childhood in the rural Midwest, predominantly Wisconsin. Robinson’s formal art education began at the Art Institute of Chicago (1869-1870) and continued at the National Academy of Design in New York (1874-1876), where he was one of the founders of the Art Students League. In 1876 he journeyed to Paris and entered the atelier of the academician Carolus-Duran but later moved to the École des Beaux-Arts to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme. In the fall of 1879, Robinson moved to Venice; here he was befriended by American expatriate artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who had a great influence on him. Robinson returned to the United States in December of that year and began to work as a mural painter for public and private buildings in New York and Boston. By spring 1884 Robinson had earned enough money to return to France. With Paris as his home base, Robinson was able to travel to surrounding artistic sites including Barbizon and Dieppe, and to go to Holland. In 1887 he began his sojourns in Giverny, a village on the Seine where Claude Monet had established his home and studio, and he returned to that village every spring and summer for the next five years.
Although Monet generally avoided the many foreign artists who came to Giverny, he and Robinson became close friends. Like Monet, Robinson painted figure compositions and landscapes and also explored the concept of sequential images in a series of panoramic views of Giverny. During his Giverny period, Robinson continued to make trips back to New York, where he maintained friendships with Twachtman and Weir, and through them served as a conduit for the dissemination of Impressionist precepts in the United States. Duncan Phillips proclaimed that Robinson’s style “used the broken tones of Monet but refined the method and made it subtle and sensuous.”
To supplement his income, Robinson began teaching during the summers in Napanoch, New York, and later in a succession of teaching positions in New Jersey. In February 1895 Macbeth Gallery in New York gave him his first solo exhibition. Robinson died the next year during an acute asthma attack, an illness that had plagued him his entire life. Five of his paintings were lent posthumously to the 1913 Amory Show, in which he and Twachtman represented American impressionism."

I go into settings and slow these slide shows down a notch. At that speed I get a better feel of the paintings. I love these videos and I learn so much from viewing these old masters. This artist has wonderful color and his work is filled with feeling.

Theodore Robinson (3 juillet 1852 - 2 avril 1896) était un peintre américain célèbre pour ses paysages impressionnistes. Il fut l'un des premiers artistes américains à adopter l'impressionnisme à la fin des années 1880. Il fréquenta Claude Monet à Giverny. Plusieurs de ses toiles sont considérées comme des chefs d'œuvre de l'impressionnisme américain. Biographie Theodore Robinson est né à Irasburg dans le Vermont, au Nord-Est des États-Unis. Sa famille s'installa dans le Wisconsin et Robinson commença des études d'art à l'Institut d'art de Chicago en 18691. L'année suivante, il s'installa à Denver, près des montagnes Rocheuses, pour soulager ses crises d'asthme1. En 1874, il intégra l'Académie américaine de design et l'Art Students League à New York. En 1876, il partit pour Paris, où il fut l'élève de Carolus-Duran puis de Jean-Léon Gérôme à l'École des beaux-arts. Il peignit ses premières toiles à Paris en 1877, et passa l'été à Grez-sur-Loing. Après plusieurs voyages à Venise et Bologne, il retourna aux États-Unis en 1879, où il resta plusieurs années. Pendant cette période, il adopta le style réaliste et représenta des personnes exécutant des tâches agricoles ou domestiques. Capri, 1890, musée Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid En 1884, Theodore Robinson retourna en France, où il vécut huit années, tout en faisant des séjours en Amérique. Il fréquenta Giverny en Normandie, le centre de l'impressionnisme, autour de la figure de Claude Monet. De tous les artistes américains, il fut le plus proche du maître français, qui lui donnait des conseils. Ainsi, Capri, peint en 1890, s'inspire probablement des Falaises à Varengeville, Pourville, et Etretat. À Giverny, Robinson réalisa quelques-unes de ses meilleures toiles : des paysages ruraux, des femmes. La Débâcle (1892) est considérée comme une œuvre de maturité. Il quitta la France en 1892 et obtint une place d'enseignant à la Brooklyn Art School. Il fut en relation avec d'autres peintres impressionnistes américains comme John Henry Twachtman et Julian Alden Weir, et séjourna à la Cos Cob Art Colony dans le Connecticut. C'est là qu'il peignit une série de marines au Riverside Yacht Club. Il passa les classes d'été à Napanoch, près des montagnes Catskill, où il peignit quelques paysages1. Il enseigna également à l'Evelyn College de Princeton, puis à la Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts de Philadelphie. En 1895, il réalisa plusieurs toiles dans le Vermont et écrivit une lettre à Claude Monet en février 1896, annonçant son retour à Giverny. Mais il mourut en avril à New York à l'âge de 43 ans, d'une crise d'asthme aiguë. Aujourd'hui, les toiles de Theodore Robinson sont conservées au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York, à la Corcoran Gallery of Art de Washington et à l'Institut d'art de Chicago.

Is this his complete collection? I'm in possession of a Theodore Robinson not shown in this video. It's much in the same style as many shown- what appears to be a farm house with a long driveway with an elderly woman in a blue top and long black skirt- like many are wearing in the paintings shown. It is signed TH. Robinson then Paris below the signature. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

A wonderful painter,my 1 criticism of him is that there are no black people in his pictures or landscapes .He was in America and should have done so as America civil war and post civil war was in his life time.

If there were people of colour there to paint into the paintings they would be. Remember this was a different time when racism really was racism.
