The one you listed while the most common actually has the most going against it as there was no such consistent functionality on the complicated clothing worn by women during the time this was common. The most prominent theory comes from military dress dictating what side men's clothes adopted and women's was just flipped to distinguish them. And that's only because of how influential military tradition has shown to be on cultures and documents outlining the practice in European militaries. However there still really isn't much to go on to say that conclusively.

They did have great chemistry, but “the office” is great because writers never went overboard with the chemistry between any two or three characters. They kept whole thing balanced. You can see chemistry between Michael and Pam, Michael and Toby hate, Angela and Phyllis hate..they never went overboard with Jim-Pam every episode, it was always there in every episode just adequate enough to allow room for development of other stories and characters.
